US–Iran talks under review as Strait of Hormuz proposal emerges

[0:00] the trump administration says the u.s president has discussed a new proposal from iran with his [0:05] top national security advisors i would just say that there was a discussion this morning that i [0:11] don't want to get ahead of and you'll hear directly from the president i'm sure on this topic very [0:15] soon the white house says the plan could see the strait of hormuz reopened with talks on iran's [0:20] nuclear program delayed until later but officials say washington's core demands have not changed [0:25] they include keeping the vital shipping route open and iran handing over its enriched uranium [0:31] meanwhile iran's foreign minister says tehran is considering a request from the united states to [0:36] restart talks abbas raqji made the comments on social media after meeting russian president [0:41] vladimir putin in st petersburg he says negotiations have stalled because of what he called washington's [0:47] destructive habits and changing demands putin also used the meeting to signal russia's [0:52] support for efforts to restore stability in the middle east [0:54] the white house mike trump did meet with his national security team you know what was on the [1:15] agenda there what's really been revealed well not very much has been revealed at all we heard that [1:22] statement from the press secretary a number of hours ago she said at the end of that statement that she [1:27] doesn't want to get ahead of the national security team or indeed the president and he will want to [1:33] perhaps have something to say about it later but there has been nothing there's been a complete lid [1:39] about what was discussed during that meeting between president trump and his national security team [1:45] it was so tight that we do not know exactly who in his national security team was present at that [1:51] meeting normally there is some form of readout or some form of more information giving fleshing out the [1:57] details of a meeting like this but there has been nothing there has been a lid about uh who was there [2:04] and in fact in particular what was discussed now we do know because we heard that from the press secretary [2:10] uh that under discussion was a new iranian proposal what that proposal is we have also not been told by [2:16] anybody from the white house so that discussion happened we haven't had any result out of it any decision [2:23] made uh but what we do know and that's the one thing that we do know after somewhat frustrating day [2:28] is that what the press secretary says is that it's up to the president to decide the next step [2:34] and in effect announce what the next step is going to be arising out of the latest discussions with his [2:41] national security team so until we hear from the president uh the ceasefire though will continue [2:47] but even that is at the whim or at the decision of president trump no one else within this administration [2:54] mike thanks uh mike hannah there joining us request from donald trump for negotiations have you been able to [3:12] get any idea of what uh he wants to negotiate over more precisely well indeed first of all this [3:20] is an important shift in tone from the united states president donald trump that right now is [3:25] requesting uh a negotiation with the with iran's and now abbas iraqji the top diplomat in the in iran [3:35] saying that they are reviewing this request rather than responding directly so uh what have been [3:42] circling here in iranian media that uh what uh described as a new offer or new proposal by [3:50] the united states known here in different way framed differently actually they uh known as red lines [3:58] for iran's uh first of all iran's doesn't want to uh negotiate about the nuclear file the main uh [4:07] the main reason for for this war right now they are focusing on on what what happened after this war [4:14] especially in the strait of hormuz especially in the uh about the blockade naval blockade over the [4:20] iranian ports so right now uh iranians saying that they are uh uh trying to end the war in in uh [4:28] permanently not a fragile ceasefire and also need a guarantees from the united states and from the [4:34] regional partners to have a guarantees that this this war not happen again not resume again because we know [4:41] that uh iranians have been attacked two times from these island americans uh in less than a year in [4:48] the middle of negotiation i mean that you know a lot may be actually learned from where abbas iraqji [4:55] goes next do we know where he is going he's supposed to come back to tehran to conveying all uh uh what we [5:06] could describe the gathered message from it's from the regional mediators and from the uh key partners here [5:13] especially russia and also that tell us that iran is open to open all channels for diplomacy and [5:22] we can describe this as a shuttle diplomacy starting from pakistan then to umman and also to russia so [5:31] they are mediating they are sending their message and also at the same time they are searching about [5:37] the uh key partners here uh whether it's in defense whether it's in intelligence and also whether as [5:44] a strategic partners here in the region when it comes to russia i'm mingdad al-rohey joining us there [5:52] live from tehran thank you now german chancellor frederick mertz has criticized the trump administration [5:59] for going into the war without any strategy speaking at a school event he said the u.s is being humiliated [6:05] by iran's leadership adding that tehran is gaining the upper hand in stalled talks the americans clearly [6:12] have no strategy and the problem with conflicts like this is always that it's not enough just to get [6:18] in you also have to get out we saw that all too painfully in afghanistan for 20 years we saw it in iraq
