[0:00] Hey, I'm Seth Meyers. This is Late Night. [0:02] We hope you're doing well. [0:03] And now, if you don't mind, we're gonna get to the news. [0:05] The midterms are tomorrow, [0:06] which means tonight is election eve, [0:09] so don't forget to put out milk and cookies [0:12] for Steve Kornacki. [0:15] President Trump spoke today [0:16] at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool [0:18] and discussed his Washington, D.C. renovations. [0:21] Oh, my God, it's like he doesn't even know [0:23] there's an election tomorrow. [0:25] And just a reminder, Tuesday's a very big day. [0:28] The candelabras are getting delivered. [0:32] President Trump on Saturday hosted [0:34] a jungle-themed Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago. [0:38] And apparently, he came dressed as humidity. [0:44] During a rally yesterday in Iowa, [0:46] President Trump said that he's asked all of his black friends [0:50] if they'd rather be called African-Americans or black. [0:53] And the response he got was, I'm fine with Tim. [1:00] President Trump also discussed Republican Senate nominee [1:02] Ashley Hinson's body and said, quote, [1:05] I knew Ashley for a long time [1:07] and she was a little bit heavier. [1:09] Dude, you know we can hear you, right? [1:12] You're at a rally. [1:14] You're not scrolling through Facebook. [1:16] Oh, Ashley lost some weight. Good for her. [1:19] A recent New York Times analysis [1:23] of President Trump's public speeches [1:24] found that he's become more profane, longer-winded, [1:27] and less coherent than he was in 2016. [1:30] Well, thank you, New York Times. [1:32] What else have you noticed? [1:34] Mitch McConnell slowing down a bit? [1:38] President Trump on Friday met with Stephen Hubbard, [1:42] the U.S. teacher who was recently released [1:44] from a Russian prison, and told Hubbard, quote, [1:46] You look very healthy to me. [1:48] You have no weight problem. [1:50] Yeah, he was in a Russian prison. [1:53] What does he think it's like in there? [1:55] It's like you didn't even touch the waffle station. [1:58] A federal judge in Alaska yesterday [2:01] dismissed the Justice Department's lawsuit, [2:03] asking the court to block certification [2:05] of the state Senate election [2:07] if Republican Senator Dan Sullivan loses. [2:09] So if you thought the last insurrection was bad, [2:11] wait till they add polar bears. [2:15] TMZ reported last week UNC football coach Bill Belichick [2:19] and his girlfriend Jordan Hudson have broken up. [2:21] I guess she doesn't need him anymore [2:22] now that she's old enough to rent a car. [2:25] Finally, the sandwich chain Subway [2:30] is bringing back its Fritos chicken enchilada sub [2:33] for the first time in 12 years. [2:34] Apparently, the Statue of Limitations ran out. [2:37] And that was a monologue, everybody! [2:40] You got a great Harry Potter franchise. [2:45] As well as Merrily, we roll along [2:47] in every brilliant thing on Broadway. [2:49] He's currently starring in the second season [2:51] of The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, [2:53] which airs Mondays on NBC [2:55] and streams next day on Peacock. [2:56] Daniel Radcliffe is back on the show, everybody! [2:58] Writer, comedian, and friend you know from SNL, [3:05] as well as The Burbs, Girls 5eva, and AP Bio. [3:08] Her new movie, The Cat in the Hat, [3:09] is in theaters Friday, November 6th. [3:11] Our good friend Paul LaPelle [3:13] will also be joining us before. [3:16] We get to all of that. [3:18] The final weekend of campaigning [3:20] before the midterms was rocked by last-minute drama [3:23] from Alaska to Michigan to Kansas to Iowa. [3:25] For more on this, it's time for A Closer Look. [3:28] All presidents hit the campaign trail for midterms, [3:34] but Donald Trump isn't really hitting the campaign trail. [3:36] He's just kind of falling on it with a big old splat, [3:39] like a birthday cake hitting the pavement face down. [3:42] But execution isn't what he and his buddies are worried about. [3:45] Don't focus on the insane things he's saying. [3:48] Focus on how hard he's working and how little he's sleeping. [3:52] The one thing I can say is that no president [3:54] has ever worked so hard on a midterm. [3:58] Nobody's ever campaigned like I have for midterms. [4:02] I'm working like a dog. [4:03] I work almost as hard as this guy. [4:05] I try to keep up with him. He doesn't sleep at all. [4:07] You understand that? [4:08] The man calls me at, like, 1 o'clock in the morning [4:10] and also at 5 a.m. [4:11] Mike, are you sleeping? [4:12] No, sir, of course. Sleep is for sissies. [4:14] We know... [4:14] No, no. Sleep is for sane people. [4:18] It isn't healthy to sleep two hours a night. [4:20] Just ask your health secretary. [4:22] I mean, he's a lunatic, [4:23] but I bet even he sleeps eight hours a night, [4:26] even though, from the looks of him, [4:27] it's probably on the top rack of an air fryer. [4:31] Also, if Trump slept a little more at night, [4:33] maybe he wouldn't be out cold during the day. [4:37] I mean, this is almost a daily occurrence at this point. [4:39] Every time I watch one of these clips, [4:42] I have the urge to drop a textbook on my desk. [4:46] Mr. Trump, thank you for joining us. [4:54] The point is Trump loves doing rallies [4:56] and bragging about how many rallies he does, [4:57] which is why it was shocking when, out of the blue, [5:00] he canceled, and then uncancelled, [5:02] a bunch of rallies in highly competitive states. [5:04] Since Labor Day, the president has headlined [5:07] more than 30 rallies. [5:08] Trump's campaign blitz, now set to end its run [5:11] in Iowa and Kansas. [5:12] But Trump had canceled those planned appearances, [5:14] even as both states have races for governor and senator [5:18] that ABC News rates as toss-ups, telling reporters. [5:21] You know what the reason is? [5:22] I don't feel I have to go to Kansas. [5:24] The dude's done 30 rallies in less than two months, [5:26] and suddenly he's canceling during the final climactic weekend? [5:29] That's like sprinting the first 26 miles [5:31] in the New York City Marathon and then calling an Uber [5:33] for the last 1,000 feet. [5:35] Of course, it's possible that GOP candidates [5:37] in competitive states like Kansas and Iowa [5:39] didn't want Trump around because he's wildly unpopular, [5:42] because he talks about insane like this. [5:44] So I'm studying him, and I made the mistake of saying [5:49] that I started off by studying his ass. [5:52] I just wanted to see. [5:53] I said his ass is like a pile of muscle. [5:58] Frankly, Norway sucks. [6:01] Norway has become a house country, actually. [6:04] They have solar, some solar, not those big monsters [6:08] that they put up all over that kill all the animals. [6:10] You know, the animals jump on them, and they fry. [6:14] You ever see him go to a barbecue [6:15] when he's trying to show, [6:16] I love the meat, ah, I love it, look. [6:20] I'd say 90% of the reason I took the governor. [6:24] What an inspiring closing message. [6:30] Can we fit all that on a lawn sign? [6:32] Maybe something like, in this house, [6:34] we believe animals fry on solar panels, [6:36] John Husted's got a great ass, Norway sucks, [6:38] I love the meat, and... [6:41] The reality is that Trump's a liability for Republicans, [6:44] even in deep red states like Alaska, [6:46] where GOP Senator Dan Sullivan is battling to keep his job. [6:49] And in the last week, that race has also been rocked [6:52] by last-minute surprise involving a second Dan Sullivan. [6:56] We begin with that bombshell new report [6:58] alleging that Democrats launched a scheme [7:00] to confuse voters in a race that could determine [7:02] the balance of power in Washington. [7:04] It's that Senate race in Alaska [7:06] where Democrat Mary Peltola [7:08] is running against a Republican incumbent, Dan Sullivan. [7:12] But there's a second Dan Sullivan on the ballot, [7:14] and now The New York Times is reporting [7:16] Peltola's campaign was behind an effort [7:19] to recruit that other Dan Sullivan as a spoiler. [7:22] According to The Times, top aides from Democrat [7:25] Mary Peltola's campaign instructed a staffer [7:28] to find as many Dan Sullivans in the state as they could, [7:32] until they eventually found this man, [7:34] this is Daniel J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from Petersburg, [7:39] who went on to launch his own Senate bid. [7:41] Wait a second. So the Democrats scour the state [7:43] looking for guys named Dan Sullivan [7:44] so they could recruit one of them to run as a spoiler candidate [7:47] and siphon votes away from the Republican, [7:50] who is also named Dan Sullivan. [7:52] Wow, I am shocked. [7:54] It pains me to say this, but I have to call balls and strikes. [7:56] This is very funny. [8:01] I mean, hey, they finally did it. [8:02] The Democrats finally did something as dirty as the Republicans. [8:05] I mean, it's not systematically lobbying state election officials [8:12] to send alternate slates of electors to Congress [8:14] as part of an illegal scheme to undermine a presidential election [8:17] and then storming the Capitol to in the rotunda [8:19] and threatening to kill Mike Pence dirty, [8:21] but it's still pretty dirty. [8:24] Both parties do stuff like this. [8:25] The difference is this time, the Democrats were actually good at it. [8:27] If anything, they were too good. [8:29] When Republicans tried to do something dirty, [8:31] their no-neck lawyer accidentally holds a press conference [8:35] at a landscaping company and then leaks hair dye [8:38] like Bic just exploded on his head. [8:40] If they'd sent Rudy out to find a second Dan Sullivan, [8:43] he'd come back with a Sully Danielson or a Sully Sullenberger. [8:48] Good news, boss. People will vote for him [8:49] because he's a hero. [8:50] You know he killed all those birds. [8:53] Now, here's the good news. [8:54] First, Alaska has ranked choice voting, [8:56] which means you can vote for more than one candidate, [8:58] and your vote will get counted. [8:59] So you can vote for both Dan Sullivan. [9:02] Second, the Alaska courts already dealt with this problem, [9:04] and the state came up with a solution. [9:06] They just decided to identify the Republican, [9:08] Dan S. Sullivan, on the ballot [9:10] by adding the word incumbent next to his name [9:12] and voters in Alaska seem very clear on the difference. [9:15] Can you tell who's who here? [9:17] Oh, absolutely. Yeah. [9:19] You've got Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., [9:22] and then you have Sullivan Dan, [9:25] who's a registered Republican and incumbent. [9:28] It's pretty clear. It's in black and white. [9:30] It's very clear. [9:31] When I heard about it, I decided to look up a sample ballot, [9:34] and when I saw that it showed incumbent and Republican [9:37] for the current incumbent, I wasn't worried about it at all. [9:40] I was like, people are smart enough to see it's labeled clearly. [9:44] It's already been determined by our Supreme Court in Alaska. [9:47] I wasn't worried about it. [9:48] That's a very intelligent answer, or at least I think it was. [9:52] I wasn't really listening because I couldn't stop looking [9:54] at how her antenna kept moving the whole time. [9:57] But you heard it right there. [9:58] Alaska voters are smart enough to understand [10:00] if the ballot says incumbent on it. [10:02] So that's that, right? [10:03] People are totally confused. [10:05] They shouldn't be confused when voting. [10:07] At least let him use the name Senator Dan Sullivan, [10:10] as opposed to incumbent, [10:12] because a lot of people don't know what incumbent means. [10:16] Here we go, the ironclad rule of Trump. [10:19] When he says a lot of people don't know, [10:21] that means he doesn't. [10:24] I'm guessing the only thing Trump knows about incumbent [10:29] is that it has the letter B in it, [10:31] or at least he should know that based on this. [10:34] Most people don't know that dumb has a B. [10:36] Yeah. [10:39] He deaf doesn't know what incumbent means. [10:42] So Trump's DOJ went to court to stop certification [10:44] of the results if the Republican loses, [10:46] and it won't surprise you to learn the argument [10:48] that nobody knows what incumbent means [10:50] did not sway a judge. [10:51] We begin this hour with breaking of elements [10:53] in Alaska's fight for a U.S. Senate seat. [10:57] A federal judge has thrown out the Justice Department's lawsuit [11:01] that sought to set aside some ballots [11:03] and delay certification of that race. [11:06] I didn't hear that. [11:18] What is meritless? [11:20] You mean about Dan Sullivan, meritless? [11:26] That Dan Sullivan? [11:28] I think it's one of the most meritful things. [11:32] Meritful. Well, at least he knows the difference [11:36] between less and full. [11:38] It's not meritless, it's meritful. [11:40] They're not incumbent, they're outcumbent. [11:42] It's not Alaska, it's I'll tell you, and I'll tell you this. [11:47] I forgot what your question was. [11:50] Yeah, somehow, the two Dan Sullivans [11:52] is still not even the biggest shock [11:54] to hit the midterms in the homestretch, [11:55] because in Michigan, all hell broke loose. [11:58] Madness in Michigan. [11:59] Tonight, Democrats are furious [12:01] at Representative Haley Stevens [12:03] after she endorsed the state's Republican Senate nominee [12:06] over Democrat Dr. Abdul El-Sayed. [12:09] Today, a stunning announcement [12:10] from El-Sayed's former primary rival, [12:12] Congresswoman Haley Stevens, [12:14] saying she's breaking from her party [12:16] and endorsing the Republican. [12:17] Just days ago, Stevens was backing El-Sayed. [12:20] Of course, I'm voting, you know, [12:22] for our Democratic nominee for Senate. [12:25] Tonight, the Congresswoman's move [12:27] being called a despicable betrayal [12:29] by top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer. [12:31] Stevens' top aide and communications director, [12:33] both resigning. [12:34] I am endorsing Mike Rogers [12:37] for the United States Senate today. [12:39] I'm still a very proud Democrat. [12:42] I still very much believe in everything [12:44] I voted for and said. [12:46] I have so much to say about this, but first, [12:48] what the with this camera angle? [12:51] Normally when you take a video in a car like this, [12:53] it's proof you're driving drunk. [12:54] This is how the Joker holds the camera [12:56] when he's threatening Batman. [12:59] So, Democrats were shocked by Stevens' about-face [13:02] after she reportedly bashed Rogers, [13:03] calling him a corrupt Trump crony [13:06] and a rubber stamp for Trump's agenda. [13:08] Stevens' former campaign manager wrote this . [13:10] Her fellow Democrat, Mallory McMorrow, said cut the . [13:15] And even before Sunday, the questions for El Sayed [13:17] were getting colorful. [13:18] Hi. Is Haley Stevens trying to rat the campaign? [13:21] That is not a question from you. [13:24] The language! [13:26] I'm not sure when Michigan became so profane, [13:29] but today when I checked MapQuest, [13:30] the mitten was a glove with a middle finger up. [13:34] Yeah, we're using MapQuest now because they had a little [13:37] backbone and still call it Lake Ontario. [13:40] But Democrats are especially aghast because after seeking [13:44] the Democratic nomination promising to stop Trump, [13:47] Stevens is now joining him in endorsing [13:49] one of the most nakedly racist campaigns [13:52] in modern American history. [13:53] His name is actually Abdullah something-a-la-la-la. [13:56] It's Abdullah-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba. [13:59] Mohammed El Sayed. [14:00] His family, they don't just flirt with terrorism. [14:03] They actually helped fund Osama bin Laden. [14:07] AIPAC wouldn't be, they wouldn't come here [14:11] if Dr. El Sayed didn't sleep in a bin Laden church. [14:16] If Abdul El Sayed becomes the senator for Michigan, [14:19] there is a very real risk that Americans will die as a result. [14:24] If Abdul and the Democrats win, they will open the floodgates [14:27] and invite hordes of jihadists to our shores, [14:30] creating a nightmare of violence and terror [14:33] until you cannot even have a Christmas. [14:36] We don't want to have a jihadist. [14:39] He would be the only senator that will have to go [14:41] through a metal detector before he's allowed [14:43] to go into the Senate. [14:44] I want him to have a metal detector. [14:46] That's both incredibly racist and also impossible. [14:49] You can't put metal detectors in the Senate. [14:50] Half of Mitch McConnell's organs are titanium. [14:55] Oh, I'm sorry, that's my new spleen. [14:59] So that's the campaign Stevens chose to endorse. [15:01] And if you thought she'd have a hard time defending that decision, [15:04] you're right, because she went on CNN last night [15:07] and it did not go great. [15:09] I'm just casting my vote this one way. [15:11] Michigan, there's a lot of people out there voting. [15:14] But with all due respect, you're casting your vote that way [15:17] and you're on television right now talking about it [15:19] and you had a press conference earlier. [15:22] So you're not just casting your vote. [15:24] You are very publicly casting your vote, which is fine. [15:30] But that's what you're doing, right? [15:35] Look, Anderson, I am happy to be speaking with you. [15:41] There's reports that more than half of your staff has quit. [15:43] Is that accurate? [15:46] Look, I have an incredible team in Washington. [15:51] Obviously, they cast their votes. [15:53] It's just an interesting change. [15:55] And I think a lot of people are curious to try to understand it. [16:07] Was that a question, Anderson? [16:09] No, I wanted to see if you wanted to fill in the silence, [16:11] but you don't. [16:13] Yeah, look. [16:19] Damn, that was a Game of Thrones-style burn. [16:23] I merely hoped you would fill the silence, [16:25] but you did not, so I will. [16:27] Take him away! [16:30] That interview is so brutal, I watched it through my fingers [16:32] like a horror movie. [16:33] I think I heard her audibly gulp [16:36] more than I heard her say actual words. [16:38] It would have been better for her [16:40] if the interview had gone like this. [16:42] I wanted to see if you wanted to fill in the silence. [16:44] The only thing that would have made it worse [16:50] is if she'd had a pair of antenna [16:52] that never quite stopped moving. [16:53] Can we see that? [16:54] As many as most people, [17:00] most people don't care about any of this. [17:02] Life is too expensive, [17:03] while billionaires are getting richer. [17:05] Trump's never been more unpopular. [17:06] Voters have never been more furious. [17:08] And that's why the GOP is resorting to gutter racism. [17:11] They're throwing out red meat [17:12] and hoping their base will say, [17:14] -"I love the meat. Ah!" [17:16] This has been A Closer Look.
