"to be escorted out of the room? No, they acted very quickly. No, I was very impressed by Secret Service. I mean, I'm the one, and Mark Wayne, you would agree with that, I think. I'm the one that would complain. You don't have to complain for me. I would be complaining. I'd be up here right now..."
[0:00] to be escorted out of the room?
[0:01] No, they acted very quickly.
[0:03] No, I was very impressed by Secret Service.
[0:04] I mean, I'm the one, and Mark Wayne,
[0:07] you would agree with that, I think.
[0:08] I'm the one that would complain.
[0:11] You don't have to complain for me.
[0:12] I would be complaining.
[0:13] I'd be up here right now saying,
[0:15] they didn't do their job, believe me,
[0:17] because, you know, it's my life,
[0:19] and I want to live because I want to make this country great.
[0:22] That's why I want to live.
[0:23] But when you're impactful, they go after you.
[0:26] When you're not impactful, they leave you alone.
[0:28] Okay, a couple of more?
[0:30] A couple of more?
[0:31] Go ahead, please.
[0:32] Is there any indication that this shooting
[0:36] could have been linked to the war in Iran?
[0:39] I don't think so, but you never know.
[0:42] We're going to know a lot.
[0:44] We have the best people in the world working on it,
[0:46] and we're going to know a lot.
[0:48] Please.
[0:48] Mr. President, there's a lot.
[0:50] There's you, as well as some of us who have covered Butler,
[0:54] experienced another horrific day two years ago.
[0:58] Yeah.
[0:59] What felt similar?
[1:00] You know, you had the First Lady with you today.
[1:02] What felt different?
[1:03] And you have another two-plus years in office.
[1:07] Are you concerned about something like this happening again?
[1:09] The President, I can't be concerned.
[1:10] I can only get great people.
[1:12] They did the job.
[1:13] A much, in my opinion, a much better job than Butler.
[1:16] Butler had one weak spot that we all know about.
[1:19] Somebody should have been up there.
[1:20] But even Butler, we had an hour sniper, sniper on our side,
[1:25] within 4.2 seconds from a distance of about 400 yards.
[1:33] One shot, and he was gone.
[1:37] And if he didn't do it now, you know, he's David.
[1:40] His name was David.
[1:41] I say, hello, David, every time I see him.
[1:44] David, I like you very much, David.
[1:46] But think of that.
[1:47] Now, if he doesn't hit him, and he hit him right between the eyes from 400 yards without
[1:52] any notice, nobody knew.
[1:54] He heard a sound.
[1:56] He looked over, and there was actually a tree that was somewhat in his way.
[1:59] You know the story very well.
[2:01] He aimed, he fired, and if he didn't do that, beyond me, it would have had a lot more people
[2:07] killed.
[2:08] We lost one great person and two people very badly hurt.
[2:11] They're okay now.
[2:12] But no, that was so, in a sense, doors of the ballroom, the ballroom was sealed, and everybody
[2:19] in there.
[2:20] That's why, once those doors opened, they didn't want to do tonight.
[2:23] If the doors weren't opened, we could have probably done it tonight.
[2:26] But I think we're much better off rescheduling.
[2:28] Yeah, please.
[2:29] So, Mr. President, for you, and perhaps law enforcement as well, what is the level of
[2:33] confidence that this was a lone actor, and has the suspect made any statements to police
[2:39] while in custody?
[2:40] Yeah, I think it's just my, look, it's my profession.
[2:43] We have great professionals up here and outside that have been working with us.
[2:48] My impression is he was a lone wolf, a whack job.
[2:53] These are crazy people.
[2:54] These are crazy people, and they have to be dealt with.
[2:57] They had that in the second attempt, as you know, and he's spending life in prison.
[3:04] Because if you let him out, they'll probably, you know, if he serves 10 years or 15 years,
[3:08] you let him out, he'll probably try it again with somebody else.
[3:11] They're sick people.
[3:12] We have a lot of sick people.
[3:14] But you're going to know, I think very shortly, you're going to know, Todd, a lot about him.
[3:20] You're going to know a lot about him.
[3:21] Yeah, a couple of more.
[3:26] Yeah, please, go ahead.
[3:27] Are you concerned about political violence?
[3:29] This could be politically motivated.
[3:31] All violence.
[3:32] I'm concerned about everything.
[3:33] But I can't be so concerned that you can't function.
[3:37] No, I'm here.
[3:38] It's a dangerous profession.
[3:40] You know, I tell the story, race car drivers, I think it's very dangerous.
[3:45] So, if you take 1% and then take about 10% of 1%, just to break it down very easily, they
[3:55] die.
[3:56] So, much less than 1%, 10% of 1%.
[4:00] I think bull riding is very dangerous.
[4:02] If you take about the same 10% of 1%, much less than 1%.
[4:08] But if you take presidents, it's 5.8%.
[4:11] And about 8% are shot at.
[4:16] So, nobody told me this was such a dangerous profession.
[4:21] If Marco would have told me, maybe I wouldn't have run.
[4:24] Maybe I would have said, I'll take a pass.
[4:26] No, it's a dangerous profession.
[4:28] But I don't view it that way.
[4:30] Look, I'm here to do a job.
[4:31] It's part of the job.
[4:33] It is a dangerous.
[4:34] I can't imagine that there's any profession that's more dangerous.
[4:38] But I love the country, and I'm very proud.
[4:41] I'm very proud of the job we've done.
[4:42] You see what's happened.
[4:43] We have a great country.
[4:44] We've got, I think, the most successful, the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[4:48] This happened over a period of just a year.
[4:52] And we're going to do great things.
[4:53] But with that come risks.
[4:56] There's no question about it.
[4:57] Yeah.
[4:58] I mean, there's been so much political violence, not just aimed at yourself,
[5:02] but at other members of Congress, State House speakers, you name it.
[5:06] Is that just the cost of doing business to do politics in America anymore?
[5:10] Yeah.
[5:11] Well, he has very high spirits.
[5:15] And we told him we love him and respect him.
[5:19] And he's a very proud guy.
[5:22] He's very proud of what he does.
[5:24] Secret Service agent.
[5:26] And we looked at all of the conditions that took place tonight.
[5:32] And I will say, you know, it's not a particularly secure building.
[5:38] And I didn't want to say this, but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we're planning at the White House.
[5:48] It's actually a larger room and it's much more secure.
[5:52] It's got drone proof.
[5:54] It's bulletproof glass.
[5:55] We need the ballroom.
[5:56] That's why Secret Service.
[5:57] That's why the military are demanding it.
[5:59] They've wanted the ballroom for 150 years for lots of different reasons.
[6:05] But today's a little bit different because today we need levels of security that probably nobody's ever seen before.
[6:12] But everyone owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the courage of law enforcement.
[6:20] The law enforcement and working with the D.C. police and just spoke with the mayor.
[6:25] And when we're finished, the police chief is going to take over and discuss it also from their viewpoint.
[6:35] But they also performed exactly as they were supposed to.
[6:39] And you see the attacker in different positions, but you also see the attacker totally subdued and under control.
[6:48] So as you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill in Butler, Pennsylvania less than two years ago.
[7:00] You all know that story.
[7:01] And in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close.
[7:06] We really had, again, we had some great work done by law enforcement.
[7:11] But in light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our difference peacefully.
[7:20] We have to resolve our differences.
[7:23] I will say you had Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives.
[7:31] Those words are interchangeable, perhaps, but maybe they're not.
[7:35] But you had everybody in that room, big crowd, record-setting crowd.
[7:39] There was a record-setting group of people.
[7:42] And there was a tremendous amount of love in coming together.
[7:47] I watched, I watched, and I was very, very impressed by that.
[7:52] But we were, First Lady and I were taken very well care, very quickly, very quickly rushed off the stage.
[8:01] Vice President J.D. Vance, who's here, was likewise beautifully done.
[8:08] He was just saying how quickly everybody acted.
[8:11] Law enforcement, Secret Service in particular in this case, but law enforcement.
[8:15] Marco had the same thing.
[8:16] Pete was there.
[8:17] Pete didn't want any help.
[8:18] He didn't want anybody to help him.
[8:20] He doesn't want anybody to help him.
[8:22] But he did get some, didn't you?
[8:24] And I think you also said that it was very impressive.
[8:27] So with that, I'd like to ask Todd Blanche to come up, say a few words, and tell you it's already underway.
[8:37] The man has been captured.
[8:40] They've, they're going to his apartment.
[8:42] I guess he lives in California.
[8:44] And he's a sick person, a very sick person.
[8:48] And we don't want things like this to happen.
[8:50] I think it's very important that I say, though, and I told the representatives of the evening,
[8:55] they did such a beautiful job, it was such a beautiful evening.
[8:58] And again, they're talking about free speech in our Constitution.
[9:01] That's what it's all about.
[9:02] Not just White House correspondence.
[9:05] It was really based on free speech in our Constitution.
[9:08] But I said very importantly that we'll do it again within the next 30 days.
[9:14] And we'll make it bigger and better and even nicer.
[9:18] So I just want to thank everybody that was involved.
[9:21] I also want to thank the press, the media.
[9:23] You've been very responsible in your coverage.
[9:26] I will say I've been seeing what's been out.
[9:28] You've been very responsible.
[9:29] So, Todd Blanche, I'd like to say a few words.
[9:31] I know we're going to have cash.
[9:32] And then you're going to go on.
[9:35] We can ask — I guess we can take a couple of questions.
[9:38] I want to thank the First Lady for — that was a rather traumatic experience for her.
[9:44] There was a lot of action taking place up there very quickly.
[9:49] But again, the response time was really incredible.
[9:53] And we're going to reschedule.
[9:55] We're going to do it again.
[9:56] We're not going to let anybody take over our society.
[9:59] We're not going to cancel things out because we can't do that.
[10:02] We wanted to stay tonight.
[10:04] I will tell you, I fought like hell to stay.
[10:08] But they — it was protocol.
[10:11] They said, please, sir, because they didn't know a lot of —
[10:14] there was a lot of action going on.
[10:16] And they didn't know, could there be — probably a lone shooter.
[10:18] But we'll find out.
[10:19] We'll find out very quickly.
[10:20] They have it very well under control.
[10:22] So I want to thank everybody very much.
[10:24] And Todd Blanche, please.
[10:26] Thank you very much, Mr. President.
[10:31] Tonight you saw the very worst and the very best of this country.
[10:38] You saw the very worst by the actions of that coward that the president just talked about.
[10:42] But you also saw the very best because you saw law enforcement do exactly what they're supposed to do.
[10:47] And you'll see the videos come out, I expect, very shortly.
[10:50] And you'll see law enforcement do exactly what we want them to do.
[10:55] And so I echo what Mr. President — what President Trump just said, that we are extraordinarily grateful and appreciative of the men and women of law enforcement that — that did their jobs tonight, including one who was — who was injured.
[11:07] This investigation is ongoing.
[11:09] I expect you will see charges filed shortly.
[11:12] The charges should be self-evident, given the conduct.
[11:16] But as you'll hear, there will be multiple charges around the shooting, around the possession of firearms and anything else that we can get on this guy.
[11:26] The investigation is obviously ongoing and just started.
[11:30] There is federal law enforcement already working on search warrants and doing their job.
[11:36] And I don't want to get ahead of them and don't want to get ahead of the work that they're doing even as we speak.
[11:41] Director Patel and I were just on the crime scene a short while ago.
[11:45] And everybody in this room should rest assured that the Metropolitan Police Department, the FBI, Secret Service — everybody's on the scene doing their job.
[11:53] I know that the police chief is going to give an update from the scene as soon as we're finished here.
[11:59] And I obviously will lead the details of what they have learned to him.
[12:05] But in the meantime, I just want to thank everybody in this room for the courage.
[12:12] And I want to thank President Trump for his words.
[12:14] And I promise you, justice will be served.
[12:18] Thank you. Director Patel.
[12:21] Thank you, General.
[12:22] Thank you, Mr. President.
[12:23] The President's absolutely right.
[12:26] You saw the best resolve of American law enforcement because you, Mr. President, inspire them 24-7, 365.
[12:31] You give them the resources that they need, and you know they know that you have their back.
[12:36] And that is a changing dynamic in this country.
[12:38] And that's why you saw Brave Secret Service agents respond immediately, swiftly, subdue and take down the suspect,
[12:44] and safeguard the lives of thousands of individuals at that hotel.
[12:47] Thanks to our interagency partnership with the Department of Homeland Security and the Metropolitan Police Department,
[12:52] the FBI was rapidly deployed onto the scene, took over the Evidence Response Unit,
[12:57] is examining all the ballistics that were found on scene to include the long gun and the shell casings.
[13:02] We are conducting witness interviews as we speak.
[13:05] You will hear from our team on the scene there with the mayor and the head of the FBI field division there.
[13:10] But please know what the Attorney General has just said reigns no truer.
[13:13] You saw the very best of America tonight.
[13:16] The very best unite us at a time of uncertainty because we have leadership here with the President and the Vice President that backs law enforcement.
[13:23] And the men and women that I shook their hands on the scene today could not have been prouder to show up on scene.
[13:28] And as the Attorney General said, make no mistake, we are conducting witness interviews.
[13:32] If you have any information, any information whatsoever related to this event, 1-800-CALL-FBI, 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[13:39] No piece of information is too small. No piece of information is inadequate.
[13:43] We will evaluate it all. We will also be conducting interviews of those that were there.
[13:47] And if any of those individuals have information, please come forward to law enforcement,
[13:51] the FBI, or the Metropolitan Police Department.
[13:53] We will be examining this individual's background thoroughly.
[13:56] That process has already started.
[13:57] And we are going to ensure that he was either a lone wolf actor or anyone else that was responsible.
[14:02] We will analyze all evidence immediately to make sure that we safeguard this country.
[14:07] Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, thank you for your leadership.
[14:09] Attorney General and Homeland Secretary Mullen, thank you for your partnership in law enforcement.
[14:13] Thank you. Thank you.
[14:15] Okay, we'll do a couple and then we go to the Chief.
[14:17] Madam Chairman, I just want to say you did a fantastic job.
[14:23] What a beautiful evening. And we're going to reschedule.
[14:26] It's very tough for her to ask a killer question, right?
[14:33] But you have done a fantastic job. Please.
[14:35] Thank you, Mr. President. I appreciate it.
[14:37] As you mentioned, it all happened so quickly.
[14:40] I wonder, especially because, unfortunately, you have experience with these sorts of threats.
[14:48] In that moment when you realized there was a threat and service agents were telling us to get down,
[14:55] can you describe what was going through your mind, how you were feeling in that moment?
[15:00] That's a very good question, actually.
[15:03] It was — it's always shocking when something like this happens.
[15:06] It's happened to me a little bit. And that never changes.
[15:11] The fact — we were sitting right next to each other, the first lady on my right —
[15:17] and I heard a noise and sort of thought it was a tray.
[15:21] I thought it was a tray going down. You know, I've heard that many times.
[15:25] And it was a pretty loud noise. And it was from quite far away.
[15:28] He hadn't breached the area at all. They really got him.
[15:32] But — so it was quite far away. But it was a gun.
[15:35] And some people really understood that pretty quickly. Other people didn't.
[15:41] I was watching to see what was happening. Probably should have gone down even faster.
[15:46] Melania was very cognizant, I think, of what happened.
[15:51] I think she knew immediately what happened. We were whisked away along with other people.
[15:59] But we were really whisked away. And again, the performance of the Secret Service and the police,
[16:04] all of the law enforcement, I thought it was really good.
[16:06] So it was very quick. There wasn't a lot of time to be thinking,
[16:09] because it was a matter of seconds before we were out the door and gone into an area.
[16:15] We very much — and you wanted to, too — we very much wanted to continue it.
[16:19] Because I don't like to let these sick people — these thugs, these horrible, horrible people —
[16:25] change the fabric of our life, change the course of what we do.
[16:29] So we held out. You were there. We held out right till the end.
[16:32] But they didn't want to take a chance. And I understand. It was protocol.
[16:37] But we're going to be doing one, hopefully, within the next 30 days or sooner.
[16:41] I am ready, willing, and able. And I was all set to really rip it.
[16:46] And I said to my people, this would be the most inappropriate speech ever made if I said one.
[16:51] So I have to save it. I don't know if I could ever be as rough as I was going to be tonight.
[16:56] I think I'm going to be probably very nice. I'll be very boring the next time.
[17:00] But we're going to have a great event. And you did a fantastic job. Thank you very much.
[17:04] Peter, go ahead.
[17:05] Thank you, President Trump. There's a report in the New York Post that this assailant
[17:10] assembled his weapon somewhere on site at the hotel. What do you think about that?
[17:16] And I ask respectfully, why do you think this keeps happening to you?
[17:23] Well, you know, I've studied assassinations. And I must tell you, the most impactful people,
[17:33] the people that do the most, you take a look at the people, Abraham Lincoln.
[17:37] I mean, you go through the people that have gone through this where they got them.
[17:43] But the people that do the most, the people that make the biggest impact, they're the ones that they go after.
[17:50] They don't go after the ones that don't do much because they like it that way.
[17:54] And when you look at the people that have either, whether it was an attempt or a successful attempt,
[18:01] they're very impactful people. Just take a look at the names here, the big names.
[18:08] And I hate to say I'm honored by that, but I've done a lot. We've done a lot.
[18:13] We have we've taken this country and we were a laughingstock for years.
[18:18] And now we're the hottest country anywhere in the world. We've changed this country.
[18:21] And there are a lot of people that are not happy about that.
[18:25] So I think that's the answer, Peter.
[18:27] And after Butler, your team for a while rethought outdoor events.
[18:31] Yeah.
[18:32] Do you think that you now need to rethink indoor events?
[18:34] No. Well, then you just don't do events.
[18:36] No, I can't do that. I have to what it you know, it is what it is.
[18:39] We have to do it. The room was very, very secure.
[18:42] You know, he charged from 50 yards away. So he was very far away from the room.
[18:47] And what do you think when you saw the video of how fast he was running?
[18:50] He was moving. He was really moving. And the reaction time was great.
[18:54] Boy, those guys, they had their guns drawn literally by the time he was there.
[18:58] They were shooting.
[18:59] That's right.
[19:00] They were I thought they were very impressive.
[19:02] I thought they were very impressive.
[19:04] And if I didn't, I'd let you know, you know, I'm not going to be I would not stand for that.
[19:09] No, I thought they were very impressive.
[19:10] Thank you, President Trump.
[19:12] And thank you for updating us on the suspect earlier.
[19:15] Were you aware of any threats?
[19:17] Was your team aware of any threats beforehand?
[19:19] And do you believe you were the target of this tonight?
[19:21] I guess. I mean, these people, they're crazy. They're crazy.
[19:25] And, you know, you never know. He was very far away from me.
[19:28] He had to go through a lot.
[19:29] You know, we had we had resources all over.
[19:33] We had resources sitting at tables literally in disguise sitting maybe at your table.
[19:39] Who knows? But we had we had people all over the room.
[19:41] So he had a long way to go. That was really first line of defense.
[19:45] And they got him. And they really, you know, they acted incredibly.
[19:48] No, we have we've had no there was no notification.
[19:53] We had no idea. Go ahead.
[19:54] Do you have any political motivations from this?
[19:56] Well, you never know.
[19:57] No, we'll be able to tell you that maybe by tomorrow or the next day.
[20:01] You know, he's in custody and they asking him a lot of questions.
[20:05] I guess they're going over Todd and they're they're already at his apartment.
[20:08] He lives in California.
[20:10] Yes, sir.
[20:11] And they'll be there over there. So they'll be able to tell you.
[20:14] Thank you.
[20:15] President Trump, did the suspect say anything or was he wearing anything that would allege some type of motive here?
[20:23] Nothing. No, I mean, he was a guy who looked pretty evil when he was down.
[20:29] You know, they had him down. He was fighting hard.
[20:31] He was a obvious, in my opinion, a sick person who would do that but a sick person.
[20:36] But I think you're going to find everything about him. No reason to talk about it now.
[20:40] But tomorrow at this time, long before this time, you're going to know a lot of things about him.
[20:44] He was a they seem to think he was a lone wolf. And I feel that too.
[20:48] Are you concerned about U.S. Secret Service protection ability?
[20:52] We saw several of the detailies take minutes to be escorted out the room.
[20:56] No, they acted very quickly. No, I was very impressed by Secret Service.
[20:59] I mean, I'm the one and Mark when you would agree with that, I think I'm the one that would complain.
[21:07] You don't have to complain for me. I would be complaining.
[21:09] I'd be up here right now saying they didn't do their job.
[21:11] Oh, believe me, because, you know, it's my life and I want to live because I want to make this country great.
[21:17] That's why I want to live. But when you're impactful, they go after you.
[21:21] When you're not impactful, they leave you alone.
[21:23] Okay, a couple of a couple of more. A couple of more. Go ahead, please.
[21:28] Is there any indication that this this shooting was could have been linked to the war in Iran?
[21:35] I don't think so, but you never know. We're going to know a lot.
[21:39] Well, we have the best people in the world working on it and we're going to know a lot, please.
[21:44] Mr. President, there's a lot. There's you as well as some of us who have covered Butler experienced another horrific day.
[21:52] Two years ago. Yeah. What's what felt similar?
[21:55] You know, you had the first lady with you today. What felt different?
[21:58] And you have another two plus years in office. Are you concerned about something like this happening again?
[22:04] Well, I can't be concerned. I can only get great people.
[22:07] They did the job. A much in my opinion, a much better job than Butler.
[22:11] Butler had one weak spot that we all know about. Somebody should have been up there.
[22:15] But even Butler, we had a our sniper sniper on our side within 4.2 seconds from a distance of about 400 yards, one shot and he was gone.
[22:32] And if he didn't do now, you know, he's David. His name was David. I say, hello, David, every time I see him. David, I like you very much, David.
[22:40] But think of that. Now, if he doesn't hit him and he hit him right between the eyes from 400 yards without any notice, nobody knew.
[22:50] He heard a sound. He looked over and there was actually a tree that was somewhat in his way.
[22:54] You know the story very well. And he aimed fired. And if he didn't do that, beyond me, you would have had a lot more people killed who lost one great person and two people very badly hurt.
[23:06] They're OK now. But now that was so in a sense, you know, they that was pretty amazing. The job they did. But but but they did have that one weak spot.
[23:16] As you know, they should have had that covered tonight. They had everything covered very quickly. And he was fast. He was running full blast.
[23:23] And they got him before they got any further. I was very far away. You know, he was he hadn't anywhere close to breach the doors of the ballroom.
[23:32] The ballroom was sealed and everybody in there. That's why once those doors opened, they didn't want to do tonight.
[23:39] If the doors weren't opened, we could have probably done it tonight.
[23:42] But I think we're much better off rescheduling. Yeah, please.
[23:45] Mr. President, for you and perhaps law enforcement as well, what is the level of confidence that this was a lone actor?
[23:52] And has the suspect made any statements to police while in custody?
[23:56] I think I just might look at some of my profession.
[23:59] We have great professionals up here and outside that have been working with us.
[24:03] My impression is he was a lone wolf.
[24:07] Whack job. These are crazy people. These are crazy people.
[24:11] And they have to be dealt with. We had that in the second attempt.
[24:15] As you know, he's he's spending life in prison.
[24:19] Because if you let him out, they'll probably, you know, if he serves 10 years or 15 years, you let him out,
[24:24] he'll probably try it again with somebody else. They're sick people.
[24:27] They're sick people. We have a lot of sick people.
[24:30] But you're going to know, I think very shortly, you're going to know, Todd, a lot about him.
[24:36] You're going to know a lot about him. Yeah, a couple of more.
[24:38] Yeah, please. Go ahead.
[24:43] Are you concerned about political violence? This could be politically motivated.
[24:47] All violence. I'm concerned about everything. Look, I can't be so concerned that you can't function.
[24:53] No, I'm here. It's a dangerous profession. You know, I tell the story race car drivers.
[24:59] I think it's very dangerous. So you take 1% and then take about 10% of 1% just to break it down very easily.
[25:10] They die so much less than 1%, 10% of 1%. I think bull riding is very dangerous.
[25:17] If you take about the same 10% of 1%, much less than 1%. But if you take presidents, it's 5.8% and about 8% are shot at.
[25:30] So nobody told me this was such a dangerous profession. If Marco would have told me, maybe I wouldn't have run.
[25:39] Maybe I would have said I'll take a pass. No, it's a dangerous profession, but I don't view it that way.
[25:45] Look, I'm here to do a job as part of the job. It is a dangerous.
[25:50] I can't imagine that there's any profession that's more dangerous.
[25:54] But I love the country and I'm very proud. I'm very proud of the job we've done.
[25:58] You see what's happened. We have a great country. We've got, I think, the most successful, the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[26:04] This happened over a period of just a year, and we're going to do great things.
[26:09] But with that come risks. There's no question about it. Yeah.
[26:14] To that end, I mean, there's been so much political violence, not just aimed at yourself, but at other members of Congress,
[26:20] State House speakers, you name it. Is that just the cost of doing business to do politics in America anymore?
[26:26] Yeah, well, he has very high spirits. And we told him we love him and respect him.
[26:35] And he's a very proud guy. He's very proud of what he does. Secret Service agent.
[26:42] And we looked at all of the conditions that took place tonight.
[26:48] And I will say, you know, it's not a particularly secure building.
[26:54] And I didn't want to say this, but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we're planning at the White House.
[27:05] It's actually a larger room and it's much more secure. It's got drone proof. It's bulletproof glass.
[27:11] We need the ballroom. That's why Secret Service. That's why the military are demanding it.
[27:15] They've wanted the ballroom for 150 years for lots of different reasons.
[27:21] But today's a little bit different because today we need levels of security that probably nobody's ever seen before.
[27:29] But everyone owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the courage of law enforcement.
[27:36] The law enforcement and working with the D.C. police and just spoke with the mayor.
[27:41] And when we're finished, the police chief is going to take over and discuss it also from their viewpoint.
[27:51] But they also performed exactly as they were supposed to.
[27:56] And you see the attacker in different positions, but you also see the attacker totally subdued and under control.
[28:03] So, as you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill in Butler, Pennsylvania less than two years ago.
[28:17] You all know that story. And in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close.
[28:23] We really had, again, we had some great work done by law enforcement.
[28:28] But in light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our difference peacefully.
[28:37] We have to resolve our differences.
[28:40] I will say, you had Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives.
[28:48] Those words are interchangeable, perhaps, but maybe they're not.
[28:51] But you had everybody in that room, big crowd, record-setting crowd.
[28:55] There was a record-setting group of people.
[28:59] And there was a tremendous amount of love in coming together.
[29:03] I watched, I watched, and I was very, very impressed by that.
[29:07] But we were, First Lady and I were taken very well care, very quickly, very quickly rushed off the stage.
[29:17] Vice President J.D. Vance, who's here, was likewise beautifully done.
[29:24] He was just saying how quickly everybody acted.
[29:27] Law enforcement, Secret Service in particular in this case, but law enforcement.
[29:31] Marco had the same thing.
[29:32] Pete was there.
[29:33] Pete didn't want any help.
[29:34] He didn't want anybody to help him.
[29:36] He doesn't want anybody to help him.
[29:38] But he did get some, didn't you?
[29:39] And I think you also said that it was very impressive.
[29:44] So with that, I'd like to ask Todd Blanche to come up, say a few words, and tell you it's already underway.
[29:52] The man has been captured.
[29:55] They're going to his apartment.
[29:59] I guess he lives in California.
[30:01] And he's a sick person, a very sick person.
[30:04] And we don't want things like this to happen.
[30:06] I think it's very important that I say, though, and I told the representatives of the evening,
[30:10] they did such a beautiful job with such a beautiful evening.
[30:13] And again, they're talking about free speech in our Constitution.
[30:16] That's what it's all about, not just White House correspondence.
[30:20] It's really, it was really based on free speech in our Constitution.
[30:24] But I said very importantly that we'll do it again within the next 30 days.
[30:29] And we'll make it bigger and better and even nicer.
[30:34] So I just want to thank everybody that was involved.
[30:37] I also want to thank the press, the media.
[30:39] You've been very responsible in your coverage, I will say.
[30:42] I've been seeing what's been out.
[30:43] You've been very responsible.
[30:45] So, Todd Blanche, I'd like to say a few words.
[30:47] I know we're going to have cash, and then you're going to go on.
[30:51] We can ask, I guess we can take a couple of questions.
[30:54] I want to thank the First Lady for, that was a rather traumatic experience for her.
[31:01] There was a lot of action taking place up there very quickly.
[31:05] But again, the response time was really incredible.
[31:09] And we're going to reschedule.
[31:11] We're going to do it again.
[31:12] We're not going to let anybody take over our society.
[31:15] We're not going to cancel things out, because we can't do that.
[31:18] We wanted to stay tonight.
[31:20] I will tell you, I fought like hell to stay.
[31:25] But they, it was protocol.
[31:27] They said, please, sir, because they didn't know a lot of,
[31:30] there was a lot of action going on.
[31:32] And they didn't know, could there be probably a lone shooter, but we'll find out.
[31:35] We'll find out very quickly.
[31:37] They have it very well under control.
[31:38] So I want to thank everybody very much.
[31:40] And Todd Blanche, please.
[31:42] Thank you very much, Mr. President.
[31:47] Tonight you saw the very worst and the very best of this country.
[31:54] You saw the very worst by the actions of that coward that the President just talked about.
[31:58] But you also saw the very best, because you saw law enforcement do exactly what they're supposed to do.
[32:04] And you'll see the videos come out, I expect, very shortly.
[32:08] And you'll see law enforcement do exactly what we want them to do.
[32:12] And so I echo what Mr. President, what President Trump just said,
[32:15] that we are extraordinarily grateful and appreciative of the men and women of law enforcement that did their jobs tonight,
[32:21] including one who was injured.
[32:24] This investigation is ongoing.
[32:26] I expect you will see charges filed shortly.
[32:29] The charges should be self-evident, given the conduct.
[32:32] But as you'll hear, there will be multiple charges around the shooting, around the possession of firearms,
[32:38] and anything else that we can get on this guy.
[32:42] The investigation is obviously ongoing and just started.
[32:46] There is federal law enforcement already working on search warrants and doing their job,
[32:52] and I don't want to get ahead of them and don't want to get ahead of the work that they're doing even as we speak.
[32:57] Director Patel and I were just on the crime scene a short while ago,
[33:01] and everybody in this room should rest assured that the Metropolitan Police Department, the FBI, Secret Service,
[33:07] everybody's on the scene doing their job.
[33:10] I know that the police chief is going to give an update from the scene as soon as we're finished here,
[33:15] and I obviously will lead the details of what they have learned to him.
[33:21] But in the meantime, I just want to thank everybody in this room for the courage,
[33:27] and I want to thank President Trump for his words, and I promise you justice will be served.
[33:34] Thank you.
[33:35] Director Patel.
[33:38] Thank you, General.
[33:39] Thank you, Mr. President.
[33:41] The President's absolutely right.
[33:42] You saw the best resolve of American law enforcement because you, Mr. President, inspire them 24-7, 365.
[33:48] You give them the resources that they need, and you know, they know that you have their back.
[33:52] And that is a changing dynamic in this country, and that's down the suspect and safeguard the lives of thousands of individuals at that hotel.
[33:59] Thanks to our interagency partnership with the Department of Homeland Security and the Metropolitan Police Department,
[34:04] the FBI was rapidly deployed onto the scene, took over the Evidence Response Unit,
[34:09] is examining all the ballistics that were found on scene to include the long gun and the shell casings.
[34:14] We are conducting witness interviews as we speak.
[34:16] You will hear from our team on the scene there with the mayor and the head of the FBI field division there.
[34:21] But please know what the Attorney General has just said.
[34:24] Reigns no truer.
[34:25] You saw the very best of America tonight.
[34:27] The very best unite us at a time of uncertainty because we have leadership here with the President, the Vice President,
[34:33] that backs law enforcement, and the men and women that I shook their hands on the scene today could not have been prouder to show up on scene.
[34:39] And as the Attorney General said, make no mistake, we are conducting witness interviews.
[34:43] If you have any information, any information whatsoever related to this event, 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[34:49] 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[34:51] No piece of information is too small.
[34:53] No piece of information is inadequate.
[34:54] We will evaluate it all.
[34:55] We will also be conducting interviews of those that were there.
[34:58] And if any of those individuals have information, please come forward to law enforcement.
[35:02] The FBI or the Metropolitan Police Department.
[35:04] We will be examining this individual's background thoroughly.
[35:07] That process has already started.
[35:09] And we are going to ensure that he was either a lone wolf actor or anyone else that was responsible.
[35:13] We will analyze all evidence immediately to make sure that we safeguard this country.
[35:18] Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, thank you for your leadership, Attorney General and Homeland Secretary Mullen.
[35:22] Thank you for your partnership in law enforcement.
[35:24] Thank you.
[35:25] Thank you.
[35:26] Okay, we'll do a couple and then we go to the Chief.
[35:28] Madam Chairman.
[35:30] Madam Chairman.
[35:31] I just want to say you did a fantastic job.
[35:34] What a beautiful evening.
[35:35] And we're going to reschedule.
[35:36] It's very tough for her to ask a killer question, right?
[35:44] But you have done a fantastic job.
[35:45] Please.
[35:46] Thank you, Mr. President.
[35:47] I appreciate it.
[35:48] As you mentioned, it all happened so quickly.
[35:51] And I wonder, especially because, unfortunately, you have experience with these sorts of threats.
[35:59] In that moment, when you realized there was a threat and service agents were telling us to get down.
[36:06] Can you describe what was going through your mind, how you were feeling in that moment?
[36:12] That's a very good question, actually.
[36:14] It's always shocking when something like this happens.
[36:18] Happened to me a little bit.
[36:20] And that never changes.
[36:23] The fact, we were sitting right next to each other.
[36:26] The first lady on my right.
[36:28] And I heard a noise and sort of thought it was a tray.
[36:32] I thought it was a tray going down.
[36:35] I've heard that many times and it was pretty loud noise.
[36:38] And it was from quite far away.
[36:40] He hadn't breached the area at all.
[36:42] They really got him.
[36:43] But so it was quite far away.
[36:45] But it was a gun.
[36:46] And some people really understood that pretty quickly.
[36:51] Other people didn't.
[36:52] I was watching to see what was happening.
[36:55] Probably should have gone down even faster.
[36:57] Melania was very cognizant, I think, of what happened.
[37:02] I think she knew immediately what happened.
[37:05] She was saying, that's a bad noise.
[37:07] And we were whisked away along with other people.
[37:14] But we were really whisked away.
[37:16] And again, the performance of the Secret Service and the police.
[37:19] All of the law enforcement.
[37:21] I thought it was really good.
[37:22] So it was very quick.
[37:24] There wasn't a lot of time to be thinking.
[37:26] Because it was a matter of seconds before we were out the door and gone into an area.
[37:31] We very much, and you wanted to too, we very much wanted to continue it.
[37:35] Because I don't like to let these sick people, these thugs, these horrible, horrible people,
[37:41] change the fabric of our life, change the course of what we do.
[37:45] So we held out.
[37:46] You were there.
[37:47] We held out right until the end.
[37:48] But they didn't want to take a chance.
[37:50] And I understand it was protocol.
[37:52] But we're going to be doing one hopefully within the next 30 days or sooner.
[37:56] And I am ready, willing, and able.
[37:58] And I was all set to really rip it.
[38:01] And I said to my people, this would be the most inappropriate speech ever made if I said one.
[38:07] So I have to save it.
[38:09] I don't know if I could ever be as rough as I was going to be tonight.
[38:12] I think I'm going to be probably very nice.
[38:14] I'll be very boring the next time.
[38:16] But we're going to have a great event.
[38:17] And you did a fantastic job.
[38:19] Thank you very much.
[38:20] Peter, go ahead.
[38:21] Thank you, President Trump.
[38:22] There's a report in the New York Post that this assailant assembled his weapon somewhere on site at the hotel.
[38:30] What do you think about that?
[38:32] And I ask respectfully, why do you think this keeps happening to you?
[38:39] Well, you know, I've studied assassinations.
[38:44] And I must tell you, the most impactful people, the people that do the most.
[38:51] You take a look at the people, Abraham Lincoln.
[38:54] I mean, you go through the people that have gone through this where they got them.
[38:58] But the people that do the most, the people that make the biggest impact, they're the ones that they go after.
[39:06] They don't go after the ones that don't do much because they like it that way.
[39:11] And when you look at the people that have either, whether it was an attempt or a successful attempt,
[39:18] they're very impactful people.
[39:20] Just take a look at the names here.
[39:22] They're big names.
[39:23] And I hate to say I'm honored by that, but I've done a lot.
[39:29] We've done a lot.
[39:30] We have we've taken this country and we were a laughingstock for years.
[39:34] And now we're the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[39:36] We've changed this country.
[39:38] And there are a lot of people that are not happy about that.
[39:41] So I think that's the answer, Peter.
[39:43] And after Butler, your team for a while rethought outdoor events.
[39:47] Yeah.
[39:48] Do you think that you now need to rethink indoor events?
[39:50] Well, but then you just don't do events.
[39:52] No, I can't do that.
[39:53] I have to what it you know, it is what it is.
[39:55] We have to do it.
[39:56] The room was very, very secure.
[39:58] You know, he charged from 50 yards away.
[40:00] So he was very far away from the room.
[40:02] And what do you think when you saw the video of how fast he was running?
[40:05] He was moving.
[40:06] He was really moving.
[40:08] And the reaction time was great.
[40:10] Boy, those guys, they had their guns drawn literally by the time he was there.
[40:14] They were shooting.
[40:15] That's right.
[40:16] They were I thought they were very impressive.
[40:17] I thought they were very impressive.
[40:19] And if I didn't, I'd let you know.
[40:21] You know, I'm not going to be.
[40:23] I would not stand for that.
[40:25] No, I thought they were very impressive.
[40:27] Thank you, President Trump.
[40:28] And thank you for updating us on the suspect earlier.
[40:31] Were you aware of any threats?
[40:33] Was your team aware of any threats beforehand?
[40:35] And do you believe you were the target of this tonight?
[40:38] I guess.
[40:39] I mean, these people, they're crazy.
[40:41] They're crazy.
[40:42] And, you know, you never know.
[40:43] It was very far away from me.
[40:45] I had to go through a lot.
[40:46] You know, we had resources all over.
[40:49] We had resources sitting at tables, literally in disguise, sitting maybe at your table.
[40:55] Who knows?
[40:56] But we had people all over the room.
[40:58] So he had a long way to go.
[40:59] That was really a first line of defense.
[41:01] And they got him.
[41:02] And they really, you know, they acted incredibly.
[41:05] No, we have no — we've had no — there was no notification.
[41:08] We had no idea.
[41:09] Go ahead, Kevin.
[41:10] Do you not have any political motivations from this suspect?
[41:12] Well, you never know.
[41:13] Now, we'll be able to tell you that maybe by tomorrow or the next day.
[41:17] You know, he's in custody.
[41:18] And they're asking him a lot of questions.
[41:21] I guess they're going over, Todd, and they're — they're already at his apartment.
[41:24] He lives in California.
[41:26] Yes, sir.
[41:27] And they'll be — they're over there.
[41:29] So they'll be able to tell you.
[41:30] Thank you, Caitlin.
[41:31] President Trump, did the suspect say anything, or was he wearing anything that would allege some type of motive here?
[41:39] No.
[41:41] I mean, he was a guy who looked pretty evil when he was down.
[41:46] You know, they had him down.
[41:47] He was fighting hard.
[41:48] He was a — in my opinion, a sick person.
[41:51] Who would do that but a sick person?
[41:53] But I think you're going to find everything about him.
[41:55] No reason to talk about it now.
[41:56] But tomorrow, at this time, long before this time, you're going to know a lot of things about him.
[42:01] He was a — they seemed to think he was a lone wolf.
[42:04] And I feel that, too.
[42:05] Are you concerned about U.S. Secret Service protection ability?
[42:09] We saw several of the detailees take minutes to be escorted out of the room.
[42:13] No, they acted very quickly.
[42:14] No, I was very impressed by Secret Service.
[42:16] I mean, I'm the one — and, Mark, when you would agree with that, I think —
[42:20] I'm the one that would complain.
[42:22] You don't have to complain for me.
[42:24] I would be complaining.
[42:25] I'd be up here right now saying they didn't do their job.
[42:27] Oh, believe me, because, you know, it's my life.
[42:30] And I want to live because I want to make this country great.
[42:34] That's why I want to live.
[42:35] But when you're impactful, they go after you.
[42:37] When you're not impactful, they leave you alone.
[42:39] Okay, a couple of — a couple of more.
[42:41] A couple of more.
[42:42] Go ahead, please.
[42:43] Is there any indication that this — this shooting was — could have been linked to the war in Iran?
[42:51] I don't think so, but you never know.
[42:54] We're going to know a lot.
[42:55] We'll — we have the best people in the world working on it, and we're going to know a lot.
[42:59] Please.
[43:00] Mr. President, there's a lot — there's — you, as well as some of us who have covered Butler,
[43:06] experienced another horrific day two years ago.
[43:09] Yeah.
[43:10] What's — what felt similar?
[43:12] You know, you had the First Lady with you today.
[43:15] What felt different?
[43:16] And you have another two-plus years in office.
[43:19] Are you concerned about something like this happening again?
[43:21] Well, I can't be concerned.
[43:22] I — I can only get great people.
[43:24] They did the job.
[43:25] A much — in my opinion, a much better job than Butler.
[43:28] Butler had one weak spot that we all know about.
[43:31] Somebody should have been up there.
[43:32] But even Butler — we had a — our — sniper — sniper on our side.
[43:38] Within 4.2 seconds, from a distance of about 400 yards, one shot, and he was gone.
[43:48] And if he didn't do — now, you know, he's David.
[43:51] His name was David.
[43:53] I say, hello, David, every time I see him.
[43:56] David, I like you very much, David.
[43:58] But think of that.
[43:59] Now, if he doesn't hit him, and he hit him right between the eyes from 400 yards without any notice,
[44:05] nobody knew.
[44:06] He heard a sound.
[44:07] He looked over, and there was actually a tree that was somewhat in his way.
[44:10] You know the story very well.
[44:11] And he aimed — he fired.
[44:14] And if he didn't do that, beyond me, you would have had a lot more people killed.
[44:19] We lost one great person and two people very badly hurt.
[44:23] They were okay now.
[44:24] But, no, that was — so, in a sense, you know, they — it was pretty amazing, the job they did.
[44:29] But — but — but they did have that one weak spot.
[44:33] As you know, they should have had that covered.
[44:35] Tonight, they had everything covered very quickly.
[44:38] And he was fast.
[44:39] He was running full blast.
[44:40] And they got him before they got any further.
[44:42] I was very far away.
[44:43] You know, he was — he hadn't anywhere close to breached the doors of the ballroom.
[44:48] The ballroom was sealed, and everybody in there.
[44:52] That's why, once those doors opened, they didn't want to do tonight.
[44:55] If the doors weren't opened, we could have probably done it tonight.
[44:58] But I think we're much better off rescheduling.
[45:00] Yeah, please.
[45:01] Mr. President, for you and perhaps law enforcement as well,
[45:05] what is the level of confidence that this was a lone actor?
[45:08] And has the suspect made any statements to police while in custody?
[45:12] Mr. Yeah, I think — it's just my — look at my profession.
[45:15] We have great professionals up here and outside that have been working with us.
[45:19] My impression is he was a lone wolf.
[45:23] Whack job.
[45:24] These are crazy people.
[45:26] These are crazy people.
[45:27] And they have to be dealt with.
[45:29] We had that in the second attempt, as you know.
[45:32] And he's — he's spending life in prison.
[45:35] Because if you let him out, they'll probably, you know,
[45:37] if he serves 10 years or 15 years, you let him out,
[45:40] he'll probably try it again with somebody else.
[45:42] They're sick people.
[45:43] We have a lot of sick people.
[45:46] But you're going to know — I think very shortly you're going to know,
[45:49] Todd, a lot about him.
[45:52] You're going to know a lot about him.
[45:53] Yeah, a couple of more.
[45:54] Yeah, please.
[45:55] Go ahead.
[46:00] Are you concerned about political violence?
[46:02] This could be politically motivated.
[46:04] All violence.
[46:05] I'm concerned about everything.
[46:06] Look, I can't be so concerned that you can't function.
[46:10] No, I'm here.
[46:11] It's a dangerous profession.
[46:13] You know, I tell the story — race car drivers.
[46:16] I think it's very dangerous.
[46:18] So, if you take 1 percent and then take about 10 percent of 1 percent,
[46:25] just to break it down very easily, they die.
[46:28] So, much less than 1 percent.
[46:30] 10 percent of 1 percent.
[46:33] I think bull riding is very dangerous.
[46:35] If you take about the same — 10 percent of 1 percent,
[46:38] much less than 1 percent.
[46:40] But if you take presidents, it's 5.8 percent.
[46:44] And about 8 percent are shot at.
[46:47] So, nobody told me this was such a dangerous profession.
[46:54] If Marco would have told me, maybe I wouldn't have run.
[46:57] Maybe I would have said, I'll take a pass.
[46:59] No, it's a dangerous profession, but I don't view it that way.
[47:02] Look, I'm here to do a job.
[47:04] It's part of the job.
[47:06] It is a dangerous — I can't imagine that there's any profession
[47:10] that's more dangerous.
[47:11] But I love the country, and I'm very proud.
[47:13] I'm very proud of the job we've done.
[47:15] You see what's happened.
[47:16] We have a great country.
[47:17] We've got, I think, the most successful,
[47:19] the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[47:21] This happened over a period of just a year,
[47:23] and we're going to do great things.
[47:25] But with that come risks.
[47:27] There's no question about it.
[47:28] Yeah.
[47:29] I mean, there's been so much political violence,
[47:32] not just aimed at yourself, but at other members of Congress,
[47:36] State House speakers, you name it.
[47:38] Is that just the cost of doing business to do politics in America anymore?
[47:43] Yeah.
[47:44] Well, he has very high spirits.
[47:48] And we told him we love him and respect him.
[47:52] And he's a very proud guy.
[47:54] He's very proud of what he does, secret service agent.
[47:58] And we looked at all of the conditions that took place tonight.
[48:04] And I will say, you know, it's not a particularly secure building.
[48:10] And I didn't want to say this, but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we're planning at the White House.
[48:21] It's actually a larger room, and it's much more secure.
[48:24] It's got — it's drone proof.
[48:26] It's bulletproof glass.
[48:27] We need the ballroom.
[48:28] That's why Secret Service.
[48:29] That's why the military are demanding it.
[48:31] They've wanted the ballroom for 150 years for lots of different reasons.
[48:37] But today's a little bit different, because today we need levels of security that probably nobody's ever seen before.
[48:45] But everyone owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the courage of law enforcement — the law enforcement and working with the D.C. police.
[48:56] And we just spoke with the mayor.
[48:58] And when we're finished, the police chief is going to take over and discuss it also from their viewpoint.
[49:08] But they also performed exactly as they were supposed to.
[49:12] And you see the attacker in different positions, but you also see the attacker totally subdued and under control.
[49:19] So, as you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill in Butler, Pennsylvania less than two years ago.
[49:33] You all know that story.
[49:34] And in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close.
[49:39] We really had — again, we had some great work done by law enforcement.
[49:44] But in light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our difference peacefully.
[49:53] We have to — we have to resolve our differences.
[49:56] I will say, you had Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives.
[50:04] Those words are interchangeable, perhaps, but maybe they're not.
[50:07] But yet everybody in that room, big crowd, record-setting crowd.
[50:11] There was a record-setting group of people.
[50:15] And there was a tremendous amount of love in coming together.
[50:19] I watched — I watched, and I was very, very impressed by that.
[50:23] But we were — First Lady and I were taken very well care of, very quickly, very quickly rushed off the stage.
[50:33] Vice President J.D. Vance, who's here, was likewise beautifully done.
[50:40] He was just saying how quickly everybody acted.
[50:43] Law enforcement, Secret Service in particular in this case, but law enforcement.
[50:47] Marco had the same thing.
[50:48] Pete was there.
[50:49] Pete didn't want any help.
[50:50] He didn't want anybody to help him.
[50:52] He doesn't want anybody to help him.
[50:55] But he did get some, didn't you?
[50:57] And I think you also said that it was very impressive.
[51:00] So, with that, I'd like to ask Todd Blanche to come up, say a few words, and tell you it's already underway.
[51:07] The man has been captured.
[51:12] They're going to his apartment.
[51:14] I guess he lives in California.
[51:16] And he's a sick person, a very sick person.
[51:19] And we don't want things like this to happen.
[51:23] I think it's very important that I say, though — and I told the representatives of the evening.
[51:27] They did such a beautiful job.
[51:29] It was such a beautiful evening.
[51:30] And again, they're talking about free speech in our Constitution.
[51:33] That's what it's all about.
[51:34] Not just White House correspondents.
[51:37] It's really — it was really based on free speech in our Constitution.
[51:41] But I said, very importantly, that we'll do it again within the next 30 days.
[51:46] It will make it bigger and better and even nicer.
[51:50] So I just want to thank everybody that was involved.
[51:53] I also want to thank the press, the media.
[51:56] You've been very responsible in your coverage.
[51:58] I will say I've been seeing what's been out.
[52:00] You've been very responsible.
[52:02] So, Todd Blanche, I'd like to say a few words.
[52:04] I know we're going to have cash.
[52:05] And then you're going to go on.
[52:07] We can ask — I guess we can take a couple of questions.
[52:10] I want to thank the First Lady for — that was a rather traumatic experience for her.
[52:17] There was a lot of action taking place up there very quickly.
[52:21] But again, the response time was really incredible.
[52:26] And we're going to reschedule.
[52:28] We're going to do it again.
[52:29] We're not going to let anybody take over our society.
[52:32] We're not going to cancel things out because we can't do that.
[52:35] We wanted to stay tonight.
[52:36] I will tell you, I fought like hell to stay.
[52:40] But they — it was protocol.
[52:43] They said, please, sir, because they didn't know a lot of —
[52:47] there was a lot of action going on.
[52:48] And they didn't know, could there be — probably a lone shooter.
[52:51] But we'll find out.
[52:52] We'll find out very quickly.
[52:53] They have it very well under control.
[52:55] So I want to thank everybody very much.
[52:57] And Todd Blanche, please.
[52:59] Thank you very much, Mr. President.
[53:04] Tonight, you saw the very worst and the very best of this country.
[53:09] You saw the very worst by the actions of that coward that the president just talked about.
[53:15] But you also saw the very best because you saw law enforcement do exactly what they're supposed to do.
[53:20] And you'll see the videos come out, I expect, very shortly.
[53:23] And you'll see law enforcement do exactly what we want them to do.
[53:27] And so I echo what Mr. President — what President Trump just said,
[53:31] that we are extraordinarily grateful and appreciative of the men and women of law enforcement that did their jobs tonight,
[53:37] including one who was — who was injured.
[53:40] This investigation is ongoing.
[53:41] I expect you will see charges filed shortly.
[53:46] The charges should be self-evident, given the conduct.
[53:49] But — but as you'll hear, there will be multiple charges around the shooting,
[53:53] around the possession of firearms and — and anything else that we can get — get on this guy.
[53:58] The investigation is — is obviously ongoing and just started.
[54:02] There is federal law enforcement already working on search warrants and doing their job.
[54:08] And I don't want to get ahead of them and don't want to get ahead of the work that they're doing even as we speak.
[54:14] Director Patel and I were — were just on the crime scene a short while ago.
[54:18] And everybody in this room should rest assured that the Metropolitan Police Department, the FBI, Secret Service —
[54:24] everybody's on the scene doing their job.
[54:26] I know that the — the police chief is going to give an update from the scene as soon as we're finished here.
[54:32] And — and I obviously will lead — lead the details of what — of what they have learned to him.
[54:38] But in the meantime, I just want to thank — thank everybody in this room for the courage.
[54:43] And I want to thank President Trump for his — for his words.
[54:47] And — and I promise you, justice will be served.
[54:51] Thank you.
[54:52] Director Patel.
[54:54] Thank you, General.
[54:55] Thank you, Mr. President.
[54:56] The President's absolutely right.
[54:59] You saw the best resolve of American law enforcement because you, Mr. President, inspire them 24-7, 365.
[55:04] You give them the resources that they need and you know — they know — that you have their back.
[55:08] And that is a changing dynamic in this country.
[55:10] And that's why you saw brave Secret Service agents respond immediately, swiftly, subdue and take down the suspect,
[55:16] and safeguard the lives of thousands of individuals at that hotel.
[55:20] Thanks to our interagency partnership with the Department of Homeland Security and the Metropolitan Police Department,
[55:25] the FBI was rapidly deployed onto the scene, took over the Evidence Response Unit, is examining all the ballistics that were found on scene,
[55:32] to include the long gun and the shell casings.
[55:35] We are conducting witness interviews as we speak.
[55:37] You will hear from our team on the scene there with the mayor and the head of the FBI Field Division there.
[55:42] But please know what the Attorney General has just said reigns no truer.
[55:46] You saw the very best of America tonight.
[55:48] The very best unite us at a time of uncertainty because we have leadership here with the President and the Vice President that backs law enforcement.
[55:55] And the men and women that I shook their hands on the scene today could not have been prouder to show up on scene.
[56:00] And as the Attorney General said, make no mistake, we are conducting witness interviews.
[56:04] If you have any information, any information whatsoever related to this event, 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[56:10] 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[56:11] No piece of information is too small.
[56:13] No piece of information is inadequate.
[56:15] We will evaluate it all.
[56:16] We will also be conducting interviews of those that were there.
[56:19] And if any of those individuals have information, please come forward to law enforcement or the FBI or the Metropolitan Police Department.
[56:25] We will be examining this individual's background thoroughly.
[56:28] That process has already started.
[56:30] And we are going to ensure that he was either a lone wolf actor or anyone else that was responsible.
[56:34] We will analyze all evidence immediately to make sure that we safeguard this country.
[56:39] Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, thank you for your leadership.
[56:41] Attorney General and Homeland Secretary Mullen, thank you for your partnership in law enforcement.
[56:45] Thank you.
[56:46] Thank you.
[56:48] Okay, we'll do a couple and then we go to the Chief.
[56:51] Madam Chairman, I just want to say you did a fantastic job.
[56:55] What a beautiful evening.
[56:56] And we're going to reschedule.
[56:57] That is very tough for her to ask a killer question, right?
[57:05] But you have done a fantastic job.
[57:07] Please.
[57:08] Thank you, Mr. President.
[57:09] I appreciate it.
[57:10] As you mentioned, it all happened so quickly.
[57:12] And I wonder, especially because, unfortunately, you have experience with these sorts of threats.
[57:20] In that moment when you realized there was a threat and service agents were telling us to get down,
[57:27] can you describe what was going through your mind, how you were feeling in that moment?
[57:33] That's a very good question, actually.
[57:35] It was, it's always shocking when something like this happens.
[57:38] Happened to me a little bit.
[57:40] And that never changes.
[57:43] The fact, we were sitting right next to each other, the first lady on my right.
[57:49] And I heard a noise and sort of thought it was a tray.
[57:53] I thought it was a tray going down.
[57:56] You know, I've heard that many times and it was pretty loud noise.
[57:59] And it was from quite far away.
[58:01] He hadn't breached the area at all.
[58:03] They really got him.
[58:04] But, so it was quite far away, but it was a gun.
[58:07] And some people really understood that pretty quickly.
[58:13] Other people didn't.
[58:14] I was watching to see what was happening.
[58:17] Probably should have gone down even faster.
[58:19] Melania was very cognizant, I think, of what happened.
[58:24] I think she knew immediately what happened.
[58:27] She was saying, that's a bad noise.
[58:29] And we were whisked away along with other people.
[58:36] But we were really whisked away.
[58:37] And again, the performance of the Secret Service and the police,
[58:41] all of the law enforcement, I thought it was really good.
[58:44] So, it was very quick.
[58:45] There wasn't a lot of time to be thinking.
[58:47] Because it was a matter of seconds before we were out the door
[58:50] and gone into an area.
[58:53] We very much, and you wanted to, too,
[58:55] we very much wanted to continue it.
[58:57] Because I don't like to let these sick people, these thugs,
[59:00] these horrible, horrible people,
[59:03] changed the fabric of our life,
[59:05] changed the course of what we do.
[59:07] So, we held out.
[59:08] You were there.
[59:09] We held out right until the end.
[59:10] But they didn't want to take a chance.
[59:12] And I understand.
[59:13] It was protocol.
[59:14] But we're going to be doing one, hopefully,
[59:16] within the next 30 days or sooner.
[59:18] And I am ready, willing, and able.
[59:20] And I was all set to really rip it.
[59:23] And I said to my people,
[59:25] this would be the most inappropriate speech ever made if I said one.
[59:29] So, I'll have to save it.
[59:30] I don't know if I could ever be as rough as I was going to be tonight.
[59:33] I think I'm going to be probably very nice.
[59:35] I'll be very boring the next time.
[59:37] But we're going to have a great event.
[59:38] And you did a fantastic job.
[59:40] Thank you very much.
[59:41] Peter, go ahead.
[59:42] Thank you, President Trump.
[59:43] There's a report in the New York Post that this assailant
[59:47] assembled his weapon somewhere on site at the hotel.
[59:52] What do you think about that?
[59:53] And I ask respectfully, why do you think this keeps happening to you?
[1:00:00] Well, you know, I've studied assassinations.
[1:00:06] And I must tell you, the most impactful people, the people that do the most.
[1:00:12] You take a look at the people, Abraham Lincoln.
[1:00:15] I mean, you go through the people that have gone through this where they got them.
[1:00:21] But the people that do the most, the people that make the biggest impact,
[1:00:26] they're the ones that they go after.
[1:00:28] They don't go after the ones that don't do much because they like it that way.
[1:00:32] And when you look at the people that have either, whether it was an attempt or a successful attempt,
[1:00:40] they're very impactful people.
[1:00:42] Just take a look at the names here, the big names.
[1:00:45] And I hate to say I'm honored by that, but I've done a lot.
[1:00:50] We've done a lot.
[1:00:51] We have, we've taken this country and we were a laughing stock for years.
[1:00:56] And now we're the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[1:00:58] We've changed this country.
[1:00:59] And there are a lot of people that are not happy about that.
[1:01:02] So I think that's the answer, Peter.
[1:01:04] And after Butler, your team for a while rethought outdoor events.
[1:01:08] Yeah.
[1:01:09] Do you think that you now need to rethink indoor events?
[1:01:11] No.
[1:01:12] Well, then you just don't do events.
[1:01:13] No, I can't do that.
[1:01:14] I have to, what it, you know, it is what it is.
[1:01:16] We have to do it.
[1:01:17] The room was very, very secure.
[1:01:19] You know, he charged from 50 yards away.
[1:01:22] So he was very far away from the room.
[1:01:24] And what did you think when you saw the video of how fast he was running?
[1:01:27] He was moving.
[1:01:28] He was really moving.
[1:01:29] And the reaction time was great.
[1:01:31] Boy, those guys, they had their guns drawn literally by the time he was there.
[1:01:35] They were shooting.
[1:01:36] That's right.
[1:01:37] They were, I thought they were very impressive.
[1:01:39] I thought they were very impressive.
[1:01:41] And if I didn't, I'd let you know, you know.
[1:01:43] I'm not going to be, I would not stand for that.
[1:01:47] No, I thought they were very impressive.
[1:01:49] Thank you, President Trump.
[1:01:50] And thank you for updating us on the suspect earlier.
[1:01:53] Were you aware of any threats?
[1:01:55] Was your team aware of any threats beforehand?
[1:01:57] And do you believe you were the target of this tonight?
[1:01:59] I guess.
[1:02:00] I mean, these people are, they're crazy.
[1:02:02] They're crazy.
[1:02:03] And, you know, you never know.
[1:02:04] It was very far away from me.
[1:02:06] I had to go through a lot.
[1:02:07] You know, we had, we had resources all over.
[1:02:11] We had resources sitting at tables, literally in disguise, sitting maybe at your table.
[1:02:16] Maybe at your table.
[1:02:17] Who knows?
[1:02:18] But we had, we had people all over the room.
[1:02:19] So he had a long way to go.
[1:02:21] That was really a first line of defense.
[1:02:23] And they got him.
[1:02:24] And they really, you know, they acted incredibly.
[1:02:26] No, we have, we've had no, there was no notification.
[1:02:30] We had no idea.
[1:02:31] Go ahead, Kevin.
[1:02:32] Do you not have any political motivations from this?
[1:02:33] Well, you never know.
[1:02:34] Now, we'll be able to tell you that maybe by tomorrow or the next day.
[1:02:38] You know, he's in custody and they're asking him a lot of questions.
[1:02:42] I guess they're going over, Todd, and they're, they're already at his apartment.
[1:02:45] He lives in California.
[1:02:48] Yes, sir.
[1:02:49] And they'll be, they're over there.
[1:02:51] So they'll be able to tell you.
[1:02:52] Thank you, Caitlin.
[1:02:53] President Trump, did the suspect say anything or was he wearing anything that would allege
[1:03:00] some type of motive here?
[1:03:01] Nothing, no.
[1:03:02] I mean, he was a guy who looked pretty evil when he was down.
[1:03:07] You know, they had him down.
[1:03:08] He was fighting hard.
[1:03:09] He was a obvious, in my opinion, a sick person.
[1:03:12] Who would do that but a sick person?
[1:03:14] But I think you're going to find everything about him.
[1:03:16] No reason to talk about it now.
[1:03:17] But tomorrow at this time, long before this time, you're going to know a lot of things
[1:03:21] about him.
[1:03:22] He was a, they seemed to think he was a lone wolf and I feel that too.
[1:03:26] Are you concerned about U.S. Secret Service protection ability?
[1:03:29] We saw several of the detailees take minutes to be escorted out of the room.
[1:03:34] No, they acted very quickly.
[1:03:35] No, I was very impressed by Secret Service.
[1:03:37] I mean, I'm the one, and Mark Wayne, you would agree with that, I think.
[1:03:40] Yes, certainly.
[1:03:41] I'm the one that would complain.
[1:03:43] You don't have to complain for me.
[1:03:45] I would be complaining.
[1:03:46] I'd be up here right now saying they didn't do their job.
[1:03:49] Well, believe me, because, you know, it's my life.
[1:03:51] And I want to live because I want to make this country great.
[1:03:55] That's why I want to live.
[1:03:56] But when you're impactful, they go after you.
[1:03:59] When you're not impactful, they leave you alone.
[1:04:01] Okay, a couple of, a couple of more.
[1:04:03] A couple of more.
[1:04:04] Go ahead, please.
[1:04:05] Is there any indication that this, this shooting was, could have been linked to the war in Iran?
[1:04:13] I don't think so, but you never know.
[1:04:16] We're going to know a lot.
[1:04:17] We'll, we have the best people in the world working on it.
[1:04:20] We're going to know a lot.
[1:04:21] Please.
[1:04:22] Mr. President, there's a lot.
[1:04:23] There's, you, as well as some of us who have covered Butler, experienced another horrific day two years ago.
[1:04:31] Yeah.
[1:04:32] What's, what felt similar?
[1:04:33] You know, you had the First Lady with you today.
[1:04:35] What felt different?
[1:04:36] And you have another two plus years in office.
[1:04:39] Are you concerned about something like this happening again?
[1:04:42] Well, I can't be concerned.
[1:04:43] I can only get great people.
[1:04:44] They did the job.
[1:04:45] A much, in my opinion, a much better job than Butler.
[1:04:48] Butler had one weak spot that we all know about.
[1:04:51] Somebody should have been up there.
[1:04:52] But even Butler, we had a, our sniper, sniper on our side, within 4.2 seconds from a distance of about 400 yards, one shot and he was gone.
[1:05:09] And if he didn't do it now, you know, he's David.
[1:05:12] His name was David.
[1:05:13] I say, hello, David, every time I see him.
[1:05:16] David, I like you very much, David.
[1:05:18] But think of that.
[1:05:19] Now, if he doesn't hit him and he hit him right between the eyes from 400 yards without any notice, nobody knew.
[1:05:27] He heard a sound.
[1:05:28] He looked over and there was actually a tree that was somewhat in his way.
[1:05:32] You know the story very well.
[1:05:33] And he aimed, he fired.
[1:05:35] And if he didn't do that, beyond me, you would have had a lot more people killed who lost one great person and two people very badly hurt.
[1:05:43] They're okay now.
[1:05:44] But, no, that was, so in a sense, you know, they, that was pretty amazing, the job they did.
[1:05:50] But, but, but they did have that one weak spot.
[1:05:53] As you know, they should have had that covered.
[1:05:56] Tonight, they had everything covered very quickly.
[1:05:58] And he was fast.
[1:05:59] He was running full blast.
[1:06:00] And they got him before they got any further.
[1:06:04] I was very far away.
[1:06:05] You know, he was, he hadn't anywhere close to breach the doors of the ballroom.
[1:06:09] The ballroom was sealed and everybody in there.
[1:06:13] That's why once those doors opened, they didn't want to do tonight.
[1:06:16] If the doors weren't opened, we could have probably done it tonight.
[1:06:19] But I think we're much better off rescheduling.
[1:06:21] Yeah, please.
[1:06:22] Mr. President, for you and perhaps law enforcement as well.
[1:06:26] What is the level of confidence that this was a lone actor?
[1:06:30] And has the suspect made any statements to police while in custody?
[1:06:34] I think it, I just might look at some, my profession.
[1:06:37] We have great professionals up here and outside that have been working with us.
[1:06:41] My impression is he was a lone wolf, a whack job.
[1:06:46] These are crazy people.
[1:06:47] These are crazy people.
[1:06:48] And they have to be dealt with.
[1:06:50] We had that in the second attempt, as you know, and he's spending life in prison.
[1:06:56] Because if you let him out, they'll probably, you know, if he serves 10 years or 15 years,
[1:07:01] you let him out, he'll probably try it again with somebody else.
[1:07:04] They're sick people.
[1:07:05] We have a lot of sick people.
[1:07:06] But you're going to know, I think very shortly, you're going to know, Todd, a lot about him.
[1:07:14] You're going to know a lot about him.
[1:07:15] Yeah, a couple of more.
[1:07:16] Yeah, please.
[1:07:17] Go ahead.
[1:07:21] Are you concerned about political violence?
[1:07:23] This could be politically motivated.
[1:07:25] All violence.
[1:07:26] I'm concerned about everything.
[1:07:27] But I can't be so concerned that you can't function.
[1:07:31] No, I'm here.
[1:07:32] It's a dangerous profession.
[1:07:34] You know, I tell the story, race car drivers.
[1:07:37] I think it's very dangerous.
[1:07:38] So if you take 1% and then take about 10% of 1%, just to break it down very easily, they die.
[1:07:49] So much less than 1%, 10% of 1%.
[1:07:53] I think bull riding is very dangerous.
[1:07:55] If you take about the same 10% of 1%, much less than 1%.
[1:08:00] But if you take presidents, it's 5.8%.
[1:08:03] And about 8% are shot at.
[1:08:08] So nobody told me this was such a dangerous profession.
[1:08:15] If Marco would have told me, maybe I wouldn't have run.
[1:08:18] Maybe I would have said, I'll take a pass.
[1:08:20] No, it's a dangerous profession.
[1:08:22] But I don't view it that way.
[1:08:23] Look, I'm here to do a job as part of the job.
[1:08:27] It is a dangerous.
[1:08:28] I can't imagine that there's any profession that's more dangerous.
[1:08:32] But I love the country.
[1:08:33] And I'm very proud.
[1:08:34] I'm very proud of the job we've done.
[1:08:36] You see what's happened.
[1:08:37] We have a great country.
[1:08:38] We've got, I think, the most successful, the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[1:08:42] This happened over a period of just a year.
[1:08:44] And we're going to do great things.
[1:08:46] But with that come risks.
[1:08:48] There's no question about it.
[1:08:49] Yeah.
[1:08:50] I mean, there's been so much political violence, not just aimed at yourself, but at other members
[1:08:55] of Congress, State House speakers, you name it.
[1:09:00] Is that just the cost of doing business to do politics in America anymore?
[1:09:04] Yeah.
[1:09:05] Well, he has very high spirits.
[1:09:09] And we told him we love him and respect him.
[1:09:13] And he's a very proud guy.
[1:09:16] He's very proud of what he does, Secret Service agent.
[1:09:20] And we looked at all of the conditions that took place tonight.
[1:09:26] And I will say, you know, it's not a particularly secure building.
[1:09:31] And I didn't want to say this, but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of
[1:09:40] what we're planning at the White House.
[1:09:42] It's actually a larger room and it's much more secure.
[1:09:45] It's got drone proof.
[1:09:48] It's bulletproof glass.
[1:09:49] We need the ballroom.
[1:09:50] That's why Secret Service.
[1:09:51] That's why the military are demanding it.
[1:09:53] They've wanted the ballroom for 150 years for lots of different reasons.
[1:09:58] But today's a little bit different because today we need levels of security that probably
[1:10:04] nobody's ever seen before.
[1:10:06] But everyone owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the courage of law enforcement.
[1:10:14] The law enforcement and working with the D.C. police and just spoke with the mayor.
[1:10:19] And when we're finished, the police chief is going to take over and discuss it also from their viewpoint.
[1:10:29] But they also performed exactly as they were supposed to.
[1:10:33] And you see the attacker in different positions, but you also see the attacker totally subdued and under control.
[1:10:41] So, as you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill in Butler, Pennsylvania, less than two years ago.
[1:10:54] You all know that story.
[1:10:55] And in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close.
[1:11:00] We really had, again, we had some great work done by law enforcement.
[1:11:05] But in light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our difference peacefully.
[1:11:14] We have to resolve our differences.
[1:11:18] I will say, you had Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives.
[1:11:25] Those words are interchangeable, perhaps, but maybe they're not.
[1:11:29] But you had everybody in that room.
[1:11:31] Big crowd.
[1:11:32] Record-setting crowd.
[1:11:33] There was a record-setting group of people.
[1:11:36] And there was a tremendous amount of love and coming together.
[1:11:41] I watched, I watched, and I was very, very impressed by that.
[1:11:45] But we were, First Lady and I were taken very well care of, very quickly, very quickly rushed off the stage.
[1:11:55] Vice President J.D. Vance, who's here, was likewise beautifully done.
[1:12:02] He was just saying how quickly everybody acted.
[1:12:05] Law enforcement, Secret Service in particular in this case, but law enforcement.
[1:12:09] Marco had the same thing.
[1:12:10] Pete was there.
[1:12:11] Pete didn't want any help.
[1:12:12] He didn't want anybody to help him.
[1:12:14] He doesn't want anybody to help him.
[1:12:16] But he did get some, didn't you?
[1:12:18] And I think you also said that it was very impressive.
[1:12:21] So with that, I'd like to ask Todd Blanche to come up, say a few words, and tell you it's already underway.
[1:12:28] The man has been captured.
[1:12:33] They've, they're going to his apartment.
[1:12:36] I guess he lives in California.
[1:12:38] And he's a sick person, a very sick person.
[1:12:41] And we don't want things like this to happen.
[1:12:43] I think it's very important that I say, though, and I told the representatives of the evening,
[1:12:48] they did such a beautiful job, it was such a beautiful evening.
[1:12:51] And again, they're talking about free speech in our Constitution.
[1:12:54] That's what it's all about.
[1:12:55] Not just White House correspondence.
[1:12:58] It's really, it was really based on free speech in our Constitution.
[1:13:02] But I said very importantly that we'll do it again within the next 30 days.
[1:13:07] And we'll make it bigger and better and even nicer.
[1:13:11] So I just want to thank everybody that was involved.
[1:13:14] I also want to thank the press, the media.
[1:13:17] You've been very responsible in your coverage.
[1:13:19] I will say I've been seeing what's been out.
[1:13:21] You've been very responsible.
[1:13:23] So Todd Blanche, I'd like to say a few words.
[1:13:25] I know we're going to have cash.
[1:13:26] And then you're going to go on.
[1:13:28] We can ask, I guess we can take a couple of questions.
[1:13:31] I want to thank the First Lady for, that was a rather traumatic experience for her.
[1:13:38] There was a lot of action taking place up there very quickly.
[1:13:43] But again, the response time was really incredible.
[1:13:47] And we're going to reschedule, we're going to do it again.
[1:13:50] We're not going to let anybody take over our society.
[1:13:53] We're not going to cancel things out because we can't do that.
[1:13:56] We wanted to say tonight, I will tell you, I fought like hell this day.
[1:14:01] But they, it was protocol.
[1:14:05] They said, please, sir, because they didn't know a lot of,
[1:14:08] there was a lot of action going on and they didn't know,
[1:14:10] could there be probably a lone shooter, but we'll find out.
[1:14:13] We'll find out very quickly.
[1:14:14] They have it very well under control.
[1:14:16] So I want to thank everybody very much.
[1:14:18] And Todd Blanche, please.
[1:14:20] Thank you very much, Mr. President.
[1:14:25] Tonight you saw the very worst and the very best of this country.
[1:14:31] You saw the very worst by the actions of that coward that the president just talked about.
[1:14:35] But you also saw the very best because you saw law enforcement do exactly what they're supposed to do.
[1:14:42] And you'll see the videos come out, I expect very shortly,
[1:14:45] and you'll see law enforcement do exactly what we want them to do.
[1:14:49] And so I echo what Mr. President, what President Trump just said,
[1:14:52] that we are extraordinarily grateful and appreciative of the men and women of law enforcement that,
[1:14:57] that did their jobs tonight, including one who was, who was injured.
[1:15:01] This investigation is ongoing.
[1:15:03] I expect you will see charges filed shortly.
[1:15:06] The charges should be self-evident given the conduct.
[1:15:09] But, but as you'll hear, there will be multiple charges around the shooting,
[1:15:14] around the possession of firearms and, and anything else that we can get, get on this guy.
[1:15:19] The investigation is, is obviously ongoing and just started.
[1:15:23] There's federal law enforcement already working on search warrants and doing their job.
[1:15:29] And I don't want to get ahead of them.
[1:15:30] And, and don't want to get ahead of the work that they're doing even as we speak.
[1:15:34] Director Patel and I were, were just on the crime scene a short while ago.
[1:15:38] And everybody in this room should rest assured that the Metropolitan Police Department,
[1:15:43] the FBI, Secret Service, everybody's on the scene doing their job.
[1:15:48] I know that the, the police chief is going to give an update from the scene as soon as we're finished here.
[1:15:53] And, and I obviously will lead the, the, lead the details of what, of what they have learned to him.
[1:15:59] But in the meantime, I just want to thank, thank everybody in this room for the courage.
[1:16:04] And I want to thank President Trump for his, for his words.
[1:16:09] And, and I promise you justice will be served.
[1:16:12] Thank you.
[1:16:13] Director Patel.
[1:16:15] Thank you, General.
[1:16:16] Thank you, Mr. President.
[1:16:17] The president's absolutely right.
[1:16:19] You saw the best resolve of American law enforcement because you, Mr. President, inspire them 24, 7, 365.
[1:16:25] You give them the resources that they need and you know, they know that you have their back.
[1:16:29] And that is a changing dynamic in this country.
[1:16:31] And that's why you saw brave Secret Service agents respond immediately, swiftly, subdue and take down the suspect
[1:16:37] and safeguard the lives of thousands of individuals at that hotel.
[1:16:41] Thanks to our interagency partnership with the Department of Homeland Security and the Metropolitan Police Department.
[1:16:46] The FBI was rapidly deployed onto the scene, took over the evidence response unit, is examining all the ballistics that were found on scene to include the long gun and the shell casings.
[1:16:56] We are conducting witness interviews as we speak.
[1:16:59] You will hear from our team on the scene there with the mayor and the head of the FBI field division there.
[1:17:04] But please know what the attorney general has just said, reigns no truer.
[1:17:07] You saw the very best of America tonight.
[1:17:09] The very best unite us at a time of uncertainty because we have leadership here with the president, the vice president that backs law enforcement.
[1:17:17] And the men and women that I shook their hands on the scene today could not have been prouder to show up on scene.
[1:17:22] And as the attorney general said, make no mistake, we are conducting witness interviews.
[1:17:26] If you have any information, any information whatsoever related to this event, 1-800-CALL-FBI, 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[1:17:33] No piece of information is too small.
[1:17:35] No piece of information is inadequate.
[1:17:37] We will evaluate it all.
[1:17:38] We will also be conducting interviews of those that were there.
[1:17:41] And if any of those individuals have information, please come forward to law enforcement or the FBI or the Metropolitan Police Department.
[1:17:46] We will be examining this individual's background thoroughly.
[1:17:49] That process has already started.
[1:17:51] And we are going to ensure that he was either a lone wolf actor or anyone else that was responsible.
[1:17:56] We will analyze all evidence immediately to make sure that we safeguard this country.
[1:18:00] Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, thank you for your leadership, attorney general and Homeland Secretary Mullen.
[1:18:05] Thank you for your partnership in law enforcement.
[1:18:06] Thank you.
[1:18:07] Thank you.
[1:18:09] Okay.
[1:18:10] We'll do a couple and then we go to the chief.
[1:18:12] Madam Chairman, I just want to say you did a fantastic job.
[1:18:16] What a beautiful evening.
[1:18:17] And we're going to reschedule.
[1:18:18] That is very tough for her to ask a killer question, right?
[1:18:26] But you have done a fantastic job.
[1:18:28] Please.
[1:18:29] Thank you, Mr. President.
[1:18:30] I appreciate it.
[1:18:31] As you mentioned, it all happened so quickly.
[1:18:33] Yeah.
[1:18:34] And I wonder, especially because, unfortunately, you have experience with these sorts of threats.
[1:18:41] In that moment, when you realized there was a threat and service agents were telling us to get down,
[1:18:48] can you describe what was going through your mind, how you were feeling in that moment?
[1:18:54] That's a very good question, actually.
[1:18:56] It was, it's always shocking when something like this happens.
[1:19:00] Happened to me a little bit.
[1:19:02] And that never changes.
[1:19:04] The fact, we were sitting right next to each other, the first lady on my right.
[1:19:10] And I heard a noise and sort of thought it was a tray.
[1:19:15] I thought it was a tray going down.
[1:19:17] You know, I've heard that many times and it was pretty loud noise.
[1:19:20] And it was from quite far away.
[1:19:22] He hadn't breached the area at all.
[1:19:25] They really got him.
[1:19:26] But, so it was quite far away.
[1:19:28] But it was a gun.
[1:19:29] And some people really understood that pretty quickly.
[1:19:35] Other people didn't.
[1:19:36] I was watching to see what was happening.
[1:19:39] Probably should have gone down even faster.
[1:19:41] Melania was very cognizant, I think, of what happened.
[1:19:45] I think she knew immediately what happened.
[1:19:48] She was saying, that's a bad noise.
[1:19:50] And we were whisked away along with other people.
[1:19:58] But we were really whisked away.
[1:19:59] And again, the performance of the Secret Service and the police,
[1:20:03] all of the law enforcement, I thought it was really good.
[1:20:05] So, it was very quick.
[1:20:06] There wasn't a lot of time to be thinking.
[1:20:08] Because it was a matter of seconds before we were out the door
[1:20:11] and gone into an area.
[1:20:13] We very much, and you wanted to too, we very much wanted to continue it.
[1:20:17] Because I don't like to let these sick people, these thugs,
[1:20:21] these horrible, horrible people, change the fabric of our life,
[1:20:26] change the course of what we do.
[1:20:27] So, we held out.
[1:20:29] You were there.
[1:20:30] We held out right until the end.
[1:20:31] But they didn't want to take a chance.
[1:20:33] And I understand.
[1:20:34] It was protocol.
[1:20:35] But we're going to be doing one, hopefully,
[1:20:37] within the next 30 days or sooner.
[1:20:39] And I am ready, willing, and able.
[1:20:42] And I was all set to really rip it.
[1:20:45] And I said to my people, this would be the most inappropriate speech
[1:20:49] ever made if I said one.
[1:20:51] So, I'll have to save it.
[1:20:52] I don't know if I could ever be as rough as I was going to be tonight.
[1:20:55] I think I'm going to be probably very nice.
[1:20:57] I'll be very boring the next time.
[1:20:59] But we're going to have a great event.
[1:21:00] And you did a fantastic job.
[1:21:02] Thank you very much.
[1:21:03] Peter, go ahead.
[1:21:04] Thank you, President Trump.
[1:21:05] There's a report in the New York Post that this assailant
[1:21:09] assembled his weapon somewhere on site at the hotel.
[1:21:14] What do you think about that?
[1:21:15] And I ask respectfully, why do you think this keeps happening to you?
[1:21:21] Well, you know, I've studied assassinations.
[1:21:27] And I must tell you, the most impactful people, the people that do the most,
[1:21:34] you take a look at the people, Abraham Lincoln.
[1:21:37] I mean, you go through the people that have gone through this where they got them.
[1:21:41] But the people that do the most, the people that make the biggest impact,
[1:21:47] they're the ones that they go after.
[1:21:50] They don't go after the ones that don't do much because they like it that way.
[1:21:54] And when you look at the people that have either,
[1:21:58] whether it was an attempt or a successful attempt,
[1:22:01] they're very impactful people.
[1:22:03] Just take a look at the names here, the big names.
[1:22:06] And I hate to say I'm honored by that, but I've done a lot.
[1:22:11] We've done a lot.
[1:22:12] We have taken this country and we were a laughing stock for years.
[1:22:17] And now we're the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[1:22:19] We've changed this country.
[1:22:21] And there are a lot of people that are not happy about that.
[1:22:24] So I think that's the answer, Peter.
[1:22:26] After Butler, your team for a while rethought outdoor events.
[1:22:30] Yeah.
[1:22:31] Do you think that you now need to rethink indoor events?
[1:22:32] No.
[1:22:33] Well, then you just don't do events.
[1:22:34] No, I can't do that.
[1:22:35] I have to.
[1:22:36] You know, it is what it is.
[1:22:38] We have to do it.
[1:22:39] The room was very, very secure.
[1:22:41] You know, he charged from 50 yards away.
[1:22:43] So he was very far away from the room.
[1:22:45] And what did you think when you saw the video of how fast he was running?
[1:22:48] He was moving.
[1:22:49] He was really moving.
[1:22:51] And the reaction time was great.
[1:22:53] Boy, those guys, they had their guns drawn literally by the time he was there.
[1:22:57] They were shooting.
[1:22:58] That's right.
[1:22:59] They were, I thought they were very impressive.
[1:23:01] I thought they were very impressive.
[1:23:02] And if I didn't, I'd let you know.
[1:23:04] You know, I'm not going to be, I would not stand for that.
[1:23:07] No, I thought they were very impressive.
[1:23:09] Thank you, President Trump.
[1:23:10] And thank you for updating us on the suspect earlier.
[1:23:13] Were you aware of any threats?
[1:23:15] Was your team aware of any threats beforehand?
[1:23:17] And do you believe you were the target of this tonight?
[1:23:19] I guess.
[1:23:20] I mean, these people, they're crazy.
[1:23:22] They're crazy.
[1:23:23] And, you know, you never know.
[1:23:25] It was very far away from me.
[1:23:26] I had to go through a lot.
[1:23:28] You know, we had resources all over.
[1:23:31] We had resources sitting at tables, literally in disguise, sitting maybe at your table.
[1:23:37] Who knows?
[1:23:38] But we had people all over the room.
[1:23:40] So he had a long way to go.
[1:23:41] That was really a first line of defense.
[1:23:43] And they got him.
[1:23:44] And they really, you know, they acted incredibly.
[1:23:47] No, we have no, we've had no, there was no notification.
[1:23:51] We had no idea.
[1:23:52] Go ahead, Kevin.
[1:23:53] Do you not have any political motivations from this assessment?
[1:23:55] Well, you never know.
[1:23:56] No, we'll be able to tell you that maybe by tomorrow or the next day.
[1:23:59] You know, he's in custody and they're asking him a lot of questions.
[1:24:03] I guess they're going over, Todd, and they're already at his apartment.
[1:24:06] He lives in California.
[1:24:08] Yes, sir.
[1:24:09] And they'll be, they're over there.
[1:24:11] So they'll be able to tell you.
[1:24:12] Thank you, Caitlin.
[1:24:13] President Trump, did the suspect say anything or was he wearing anything that would allege
[1:24:20] some type of motive here?
[1:24:21] Nothing.
[1:24:23] No.
[1:24:24] I mean, he was a guy who looked pretty evil when he was down.
[1:24:28] You know, they had him down.
[1:24:29] He was fighting hard.
[1:24:30] He was an obvious, in my opinion, a sick person.
[1:24:33] Who would do that but a sick person?
[1:24:35] But I think you're going to find everything about him.
[1:24:37] No reason to talk about it now.
[1:24:39] But tomorrow at this time, long before this time, you're going to know a lot of things about
[1:24:43] him.
[1:24:44] He was a, they seemed to think he was a lone wolf.
[1:24:46] And I feel that too.
[1:24:47] Are you concerned about U.S. Secret Service protection ability?
[1:24:49] We saw several of the detailees take minutes to be escorted out of the room.
[1:24:55] No, they acted very quickly.
[1:24:57] No, I was very impressed by Secret Service.
[1:24:58] I mean, I'm the one, and Mark Wayne, you would agree with that, I think.
[1:25:02] Yes, certainly.
[1:25:03] I'm the one that would complain.
[1:25:05] You don't have to complain for me.
[1:25:06] I would be complaining.
[1:25:07] I'd be up here right now saying they didn't do their job.
[1:25:09] Oh, believe me, because, you know, it's my life.
[1:25:12] And I want to live because I want to make this country great.
[1:25:16] That's why I want to live.
[1:25:17] But when you're impactful, they go after you.
[1:25:19] When you're not impactful, they leave you alone.
[1:25:21] Okay, a couple of, a couple of more.
[1:25:23] A couple of more.
[1:25:24] Go ahead, please.
[1:25:25] Is there any indication that this, this shooting was, could have been linked to the war in Iran?
[1:25:33] I don't think so.
[1:25:35] But you never know.
[1:25:36] We're going to know a lot.
[1:25:37] We'll, we have the best people in the world working on it.
[1:25:40] And we're going to know a lot.
[1:25:41] Please.
[1:25:42] Mr. President, there's a lot, there's, you, as well as some of us who have covered Butler,
[1:25:48] experienced another horrific day two years ago.
[1:25:51] Yeah.
[1:25:52] What's, what felt similar?
[1:25:54] You know, you had the first lady with you today.
[1:25:56] What felt different?
[1:25:57] And you have another two plus years in office.
[1:26:00] Are you concerned about something like this happening again?
[1:26:03] Well, I can't be concerned.
[1:26:04] I can only get great people.
[1:26:06] They did the job.
[1:26:07] A much, in my opinion, a much better job than Butler.
[1:26:10] Butler had one weak spot that we all know about.
[1:26:13] Somebody should have been up there.
[1:26:14] But even Butler, we had a, our sniper, sniper on our side, within 4.2 seconds from a distance of about 400 yards, one shot and he was gone.
[1:26:30] And if he didn't do, now, you know, he's David.
[1:26:34] His name was David.
[1:26:35] I say, hello, David, every time I see him.
[1:26:38] David, I like you very much, David.
[1:26:40] But think of that.
[1:26:41] Now, if he doesn't hit him and he hit him right between the eyes from 400 yards without any notice, nobody knew.
[1:26:48] He heard a sound.
[1:26:49] He looked over and there was actually a tree that was somewhat in his way.
[1:26:54] You know the story very well.
[1:26:55] And he aimed, he fired.
[1:26:57] And if he didn't do that, beyond me, you would have had a lot more people killed who lost one great person and two people very badly hurt.
[1:27:05] They're okay now.
[1:27:06] But, no, that was so, in a sense, you know, they, it was pretty amazing, the job they did.
[1:27:12] But, but, but they did have that one weak spot.
[1:27:15] As you know, they should have had that covered.
[1:27:18] Tonight, they had everything covered very quickly.
[1:27:20] And he was fast.
[1:27:21] He was running full blast.
[1:27:22] And they got him before they got any further.
[1:27:25] I was very far away.
[1:27:26] You know, he was, he hadn't anywhere close to breach the doors of the ballroom.
[1:27:31] The ballroom was sealed and everybody in there.
[1:27:34] That's why once those doors opened, they didn't want to do tonight.
[1:27:37] If the doors weren't opened, we could have probably done it tonight.
[1:27:40] But I think we're much better off rescheduling.
[1:27:42] Yeah, please.
[1:27:43] Mr. President, for you and perhaps law enforcement as well,
[1:27:47] what is the level of confidence that this was a lone actor?
[1:27:51] And has the suspect made any statements to police while in custody?
[1:27:55] I think it's just my, look, it's not my profession.
[1:27:58] We have great professionals up here and outside that have been working with us.
[1:28:02] My impression is he was a lone wolf, whack job.
[1:28:07] These are crazy people.
[1:28:08] These are crazy people.
[1:28:09] And they have to be dealt with.
[1:28:11] We had that in the second attempt, as you know, and he's spending life in prison.
[1:28:17] Because if you let him out, they'll probably, you know, if he serves 10 years or 15 years,
[1:28:22] you let him out, he'll probably try it again with somebody else.
[1:28:25] They're sick people.
[1:28:26] We have a lot of sick people.
[1:28:28] But you're going to know, I think very shortly, you're going to know, Todd, a lot about him.
[1:28:33] You're going to know a lot about him.
[1:28:34] You're going to know a lot about him.
[1:28:35] Yeah, a couple of more.
[1:28:36] Yeah, please.
[1:28:37] Go ahead.
[1:28:42] Are you concerned about political violence?
[1:28:44] This could be politically motivated.
[1:28:46] All violence.
[1:28:47] I'm concerned about everything.
[1:28:48] Look, but I can't be so concerned that you can't function.
[1:28:52] No, I'm here.
[1:28:53] It's a dangerous profession.
[1:28:54] You know, I tell the story, race car drivers, I think it's very dangerous.
[1:29:00] So if you take 1% and then take about 10% of 1%, just to break it down very easily, they
[1:29:10] die.
[1:29:11] So much less than 1%, 10% of 1%.
[1:29:14] I think bull riding is very dangerous.
[1:29:17] If you take about the same 10% of 1%, much less than 1%.
[1:29:22] But if you take presidents, it's 5.8%.
[1:29:25] And about 8% are shot at.
[1:29:30] So nobody told me this was such a dangerous profession.
[1:29:35] If Marco would have told me, maybe I wouldn't have run.
[1:29:38] Maybe I would have said, I'll take a pass.
[1:29:40] No, it's a dangerous profession, but I don't view it that way.
[1:29:44] I don't view it that way.
[1:29:45] Look, I'm here to do a job.
[1:29:46] It's part of the job.
[1:29:48] It is a dangerous.
[1:29:49] I can't imagine that there's any profession that's more dangerous.
[1:29:53] But I love the country and I'm very proud.
[1:29:55] I'm very proud of the job we've done.
[1:29:57] You see what's happened.
[1:29:58] We have a great country.
[1:29:59] We've got, I think, the most successful, the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[1:30:04] This happened over a period of just a year.
[1:30:06] And we're going to do great things.
[1:30:08] But with that come risks.
[1:30:10] There's no question about it.
[1:30:11] Yeah.
[1:30:12] I mean, there's been so much political violence, not just aimed at yourself,
[1:30:16] but at other members of Congress, State House speakers, you name it.
[1:30:21] Is that just the cost of doing business to do politics in America anymore?
[1:30:26] Yeah.
[1:30:27] Well, he has very high spirits.
[1:30:31] And we told him we love him and respect him.
[1:30:35] And he's a very proud guy.
[1:30:37] He's very proud of what he does.
[1:30:39] Secret Service agent.
[1:30:41] And we looked at all of the conditions that took place tonight.
[1:30:48] And I will say, you know, it's not a particularly secure building.
[1:30:53] And I didn't want to say this, but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we're planning at the White House.
[1:31:04] It's actually a larger room and it's much more secure.
[1:31:07] It's got drone proof.
[1:31:10] It's bulletproof glass.
[1:31:11] We need the ballroom.
[1:31:12] That's why Secret Service.
[1:31:13] That's why the military are demanding it.
[1:31:15] They've wanted the ballroom for 150 years for lots of different reasons.
[1:31:21] Today's a little bit different because today we need levels of security that probably nobody's ever seen before.
[1:31:28] But everyone owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the courage of law enforcement.
[1:31:36] The law enforcement and working with the D.C. police.
[1:31:39] And we just spoke with the mayor.
[1:31:41] And when we're finished, the police chief is going to take over and discuss it also from their viewpoint.
[1:31:51] But they also performed exactly as they were supposed to.
[1:31:55] And you see the attacker in different positions.
[1:31:57] But you also see the attacker totally subdued and under control.
[1:32:03] So, as you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill in Butler, Pennsylvania less than two years ago.
[1:32:16] You all know that story.
[1:32:17] And in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close.
[1:32:22] We really had, again, we had some great work done by law enforcement.
[1:32:27] But in light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our difference peacefully.
[1:32:36] We have to resolve our differences.
[1:32:39] I will say you had Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives.
[1:32:47] Those words are interchangeable, perhaps, but maybe they're not.
[1:32:50] But you had everybody in that room.
[1:32:52] Big crowd.
[1:32:53] Record-setting crowd.
[1:32:54] There was a record-setting group of people.
[1:32:58] And there was a tremendous amount of love in coming together.
[1:33:02] I watched.
[1:33:03] I watched.
[1:33:04] And I was very, very impressed by that.
[1:33:06] But we were, First Lady and I were taken very well care, very quickly, very quickly rushed off the stage.
[1:33:16] Vice President J.D. Vance, who's here, was likewise beautifully done.
[1:33:24] He was just saying how quickly everybody acted.
[1:33:27] Law enforcement, Secret Service in particular in this case, but law enforcement.
[1:33:31] Marco had the same thing.
[1:33:32] Pete was there.
[1:33:33] Pete didn't want any help.
[1:33:34] He didn't want anybody to help.
[1:33:36] He doesn't want anybody to help him.
[1:33:38] But he did get some, didn't you?
[1:33:40] And I think you also said that it was very impressive.
[1:33:44] So, with that, I'd like to ask Todd Blanche to come up, say a few words, and tell you it's already underway.
[1:33:51] The man has been captured.
[1:33:56] They're going to his apartment.
[1:33:58] I guess he lives in California.
[1:34:00] And he's a sick person, a very sick person.
[1:34:03] And we don't want things like this to happen.
[1:34:05] I think it's very important that I say, though, and I told the representatives of the evening,
[1:34:10] they did such a beautiful job.
[1:34:11] It was such a beautiful evening.
[1:34:13] And, again, they're talking about free speech in our Constitution.
[1:34:17] That's what it's all about.
[1:34:18] Not just White House correspondence.
[1:34:21] It's really, it was really based on free speech in our Constitution.
[1:34:24] But I said, very importantly, that we'll do it again within the next 30 days.
[1:34:29] And we'll make it bigger and better and even nicer.
[1:34:33] So, I just want to thank everybody that was involved.
[1:34:37] I also want to thank the press, the media.
[1:34:39] You've been very responsible in your coverage, I will say.
[1:34:42] I've been seeing what's been out.
[1:34:43] You've been very responsible.
[1:34:45] So, Todd Blintz, I'd like to say a few words.
[1:34:47] I know we're going to have cash.
[1:34:48] And then you're going to go on.
[1:34:51] We can ask, I guess we can take a couple of questions.
[1:34:54] I want to thank the First Lady for, that was a rather traumatic experience for her.
[1:35:00] There was a lot of action taking place up there very quickly.
[1:35:04] But, again, the response time was really incredible.
[1:35:09] And we're going to reschedule.
[1:35:11] We're going to do it again.
[1:35:12] We're not going to let anybody take over our society.
[1:35:15] We're not going to cancel things out, because we can't do that.
[1:35:18] We wanted to stay tonight.
[1:35:19] I will tell you, I fought like hell to stay.
[1:35:23] But they, it was protocol.
[1:35:26] They said, please, sir, because they didn't know a lot of, there was a lot of action going
[1:35:31] on.
[1:35:32] And they didn't know, could there be, probably a lone shooter.
[1:35:34] But we'll find out.
[1:35:35] We'll find out very quickly.
[1:35:36] They have it very well under control.
[1:35:38] So I want to thank everybody very much.
[1:35:40] And Todd Blintz, please.
[1:35:42] Thank you very much, Mr. President.
[1:35:47] Tonight you saw the very worst and the very best of this country.
[1:35:53] You saw the very worst by the actions of that coward that the president just talked about.
[1:35:58] But you also saw the very best, because you saw law enforcement do exactly what they're
[1:36:02] supposed to do.
[1:36:03] And you'll see the videos come out, I expect very shortly.
[1:36:06] And you'll see law enforcement do exactly what we want them to do.
[1:36:10] And so I echo what Mr. President, what President Trump just said, that we are extraordinarily
[1:36:15] grateful and appreciative of the men and women of law enforcement that did their jobs
[1:36:20] tonight, including one who was injured.
[1:36:23] This investigation is ongoing.
[1:36:25] I expect you will see charges filed shortly.
[1:36:29] The charges should be self-evident, given the conduct.
[1:36:32] But as you'll hear, there will be multiple charges around the shooting, around the possession
[1:36:37] of firearms, and anything else that we can get on this guy.
[1:36:42] The investigation is obviously ongoing and just started.
[1:36:46] There is federal law enforcement already working on search warrants.
[1:36:50] And doing their job.
[1:36:51] And I don't want to get ahead of them.
[1:36:53] And don't want to get ahead of the work that they're doing, even as we speak.
[1:36:57] Director Patel and I were just on the crime scene a short while ago.
[1:37:01] And everybody in this room should rest assured that the Metropolitan Police Department, the
[1:37:06] FBI, Secret Service, everybody's on the scene doing their job.
[1:37:10] I know that the police chief is going to give an update from the scene as soon as we're
[1:37:14] finished here.
[1:37:15] And I obviously will lead the details of what they have learned to him.
[1:37:21] But in the meantime, I just want to thank everybody in this room for the courage.
[1:37:26] And I want to thank President Trump for his words.
[1:37:30] And I promise you, justice will be served.
[1:37:34] Thank you.
[1:37:35] Director Patel.
[1:37:38] Thank you, General.
[1:37:39] Thank you, Mr. President.
[1:37:41] The President's absolutely right.
[1:37:42] You saw the best resolve of American law enforcement because you, Mr. President, inspire them 24-7-365.
[1:37:48] You give them the resources that they need.
[1:37:49] And you know, they know that you have their back.
[1:37:52] And that is a changing dynamic in this country.
[1:37:54] And that's why you saw brave Secret Service agents respond immediately, swiftly, subdue and
[1:37:59] take down the suspect and safeguard the lives of thousands of individuals at that hotel.
[1:38:03] Thanks to our interagency partnership with the Department of Homeland Security and the Metropolitan
[1:38:08] Police Department, the FBI was rapidly deployed onto the scene, took over the evidence response
[1:38:12] unit, is examining all the ballistics that were found on scene to include the long gun
[1:38:17] and the shell casings.
[1:38:18] We are conducting witness interviews as we speak.
[1:38:20] You will hear from our team on the scene there with the mayor and the head of the FBI field
[1:38:25] division there.
[1:38:26] But please know what the Attorney General has just said reigns no truer.
[1:38:29] You saw the very best of America tonight.
[1:38:32] The very best unite us at a time of uncertainty because we have leadership here with the President
[1:38:37] and the Vice President that backs law enforcement and the men and women that I shook their hands
[1:38:41] on the scene today could not have been prouder to show up on scene.
[1:38:44] And as the Attorney General said, make no mistake, we are conducting witness interviews.
[1:38:48] If you have any information, any information whatsoever related to this event, 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[1:38:54] 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[1:38:55] No piece of information is too small.
[1:38:57] No piece of information is inadequate.
[1:38:59] We will evaluate it all.
[1:39:00] We will also be conducting interviews of those that were there.
[1:39:03] And if any of those individuals have information, please come forward to the law enforcement
[1:39:07] or the FBI or the Metropolitan Police Department.
[1:39:09] We will be examining this individual's background thoroughly.
[1:39:12] That process has already started.
[1:39:13] And we are going to ensure that he was either a lone wolf actor or anyone else that was responsible.
[1:39:18] We will analyze all evidence immediately to make sure that we safeguard this country.
[1:39:23] Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, thank you for your leadership.
[1:39:25] Attorney General and Homeland Secretary Merlin, thank you for your partnership in law enforcement.
[1:39:29] Thank you.
[1:39:30] Okay, we'll do a couple and then we go to the Chief.
[1:39:32] Madam Chairman, I just want to say you did a fantastic job.
[1:39:38] What a beautiful evening.
[1:39:39] And we're going to reschedule.
[1:39:41] It's very tough for her to ask a killer question.
[1:39:48] Right.
[1:39:49] But you have done a fantastic job.
[1:39:50] Please.
[1:39:51] Thank you, Mr. President.
[1:39:52] I appreciate it.
[1:39:53] As you mentioned, it all happened so quickly.
[1:39:55] Yeah.
[1:39:56] And I wonder, especially because, unfortunately, you have experience with these sorts of threats.
[1:40:04] In that moment, when you realized there was a threat and service agents were telling us to get down,
[1:40:11] can you describe what was going through your mind, how you were feeling in that moment?
[1:40:16] That's a very good question, actually.
[1:40:18] It's always shocking when something like this happens.
[1:40:22] Happened to me a little bit.
[1:40:24] And that never changes.
[1:40:27] The fact, we were sitting right next to each other, the first lady on my right,
[1:40:33] and I heard a noise and sort of thought it was a tray.
[1:40:37] I thought it was a tray going down.
[1:40:40] I've heard that many times and it was pretty loud noise.
[1:40:43] And it was from quite far away.
[1:40:45] He hadn't breached the area at all.
[1:40:47] They really got him.
[1:40:48] So it was quite far away.
[1:40:50] But it was a gun.
[1:40:51] And some people really understood that pretty quickly.
[1:40:57] Other people didn't.
[1:40:58] I was watching to see what was happening.
[1:41:01] Probably should have gone down even faster.
[1:41:03] Melania was very cognizant, I think, of what happened.
[1:41:07] I think she knew immediately what happened.
[1:41:10] She was saying, that's a bad noise.
[1:41:12] And we were whisked away along with other people.
[1:41:20] We were really whisked away.
[1:41:21] And again, the performance of the Secret Service and the police.
[1:41:25] All of the law enforcement, I thought it was really good.
[1:41:27] So, it was very quick.
[1:41:28] There wasn't a lot of time to be thinking.
[1:41:30] Because it was a matter of seconds before we were out the door and gone into an area.
[1:41:35] We very much, and you wanted to too, we very much wanted to continue it.
[1:41:39] Because I don't like to let these sick people, these thugs, these horrible, horrible people, change the fabric of our life, change the course of what we do.
[1:41:49] So, we held out.
[1:41:51] You were there.
[1:41:52] We held out right until the end.
[1:41:53] But they didn't want to take a chance.
[1:41:55] And I understand.
[1:41:56] It was protocol.
[1:41:57] But we're going to be doing one hopefully within the next 30 days or sooner.
[1:42:01] And I am ready, willing, and able.
[1:42:03] And I was all set to really rip it.
[1:42:06] And I said to my people, this would be the most inappropriate speech ever made if I said one.
[1:42:12] So, I'll have to save it.
[1:42:13] I don't know if I could ever be as rough as I was going to be tonight.
[1:42:17] I think I'm going to be probably very nice.
[1:42:19] I'll be very boring the next time.
[1:42:20] But we're going to have a great event.
[1:42:22] And you did a fantastic job.
[1:42:24] Thank you very much.
[1:42:25] Peter, go ahead.
[1:42:26] Thank you, President Trump.
[1:42:27] There's a report in the New York Post that this assailant assembled his weapon somewhere on site at the hotel.
[1:42:35] What do you think about that?
[1:42:38] And I ask respectfully, why do you think this keeps happening to you?
[1:42:45] Well, you know, I've studied assassinations.
[1:42:49] And I must tell you, the most impactful people, the people that do the most, you take a look at the people, Abraham Lincoln.
[1:42:58] I mean, you go through the people that have gone through this where they got them.
[1:43:04] But the people that do the most, the people that make the biggest impact, they're the ones that they go after.
[1:43:11] They don't go after the ones that don't do much because they like it that way.
[1:43:15] And when you look at the people that have either, whether it was an attempt or a successful attempt, they're very impactful people.
[1:43:25] Just take a look at the names here, the big names.
[1:43:28] And I hate to say I'm honored by that, but I've done a lot.
[1:43:33] We've done a lot.
[1:43:34] We have we've taken this country and we were a laughingstock for years.
[1:43:39] And now we're the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[1:43:41] We've changed this country.
[1:43:42] And there are a lot of people that are not happy about that.
[1:43:45] So I think that's the answer, Peter.
[1:43:47] And after Butler, your team for a while rethought outdoor events.
[1:43:51] Yeah.
[1:43:52] Do you think that you now need to rethink indoor events?
[1:43:54] No.
[1:43:55] Well, then you just don't do events.
[1:43:56] No, I can't do that.
[1:43:57] I have to what it you know, it is what it is.
[1:43:59] We have to do it.
[1:44:00] The room was very, very secure.
[1:44:02] You know, he charged from 50 yards away.
[1:44:05] So he was very far away from the room.
[1:44:07] And what do you think when you saw the video of how fast he was running?
[1:44:10] He was moving.
[1:44:11] He was really moving.
[1:44:12] And the reaction time was great.
[1:44:14] Boy, those guys, they had their guns drawn literally by the time he was there.
[1:44:18] They were shooting.
[1:44:19] That's right.
[1:44:20] They were I thought they were very impressive.
[1:44:22] I thought they were very impressive.
[1:44:24] And if I didn't, I'd let you know.
[1:44:25] You know, I'm not going to be I would not stand for that.
[1:44:30] No, I thought they were very impressive.
[1:44:31] Thank you, President Trump.
[1:44:33] And thank you for updating us on the suspect earlier.
[1:44:36] Were you aware of any threats?
[1:44:38] Was your team aware of any threats beforehand?
[1:44:40] And do you believe you were the target of this tonight?
[1:44:42] I guess.
[1:44:43] I mean, these people, they're crazy.
[1:44:45] They're crazy.
[1:44:46] And, you know, you never know.
[1:44:48] He was very far away from me.
[1:44:49] He had to go through a lot.
[1:44:51] You know, we had resources all over.
[1:44:54] We had resources sitting at tables, literally in disguise, sitting maybe at your table.
[1:45:00] Who knows?
[1:45:01] But we had people all over the room.
[1:45:02] So he had a long way to go.
[1:45:04] That was really a first line of defense.
[1:45:06] And they got him.
[1:45:07] And they really, you know, they acted incredibly.
[1:45:09] No, we have no — we've had no — there was no notification.
[1:45:13] We had no idea.
[1:45:14] Go ahead, Caitlin.
[1:45:15] Do you not have any political motivations from this —
[1:45:17] Well, you never know.
[1:45:18] No.
[1:45:19] We'll be able to tell you that maybe by tomorrow or the next day.
[1:45:22] You know, he's in custody.
[1:45:23] And they're asking him a lot of questions.
[1:45:26] I guess they're going over, Todd, and they're — they're already at his apartment.
[1:45:29] He lives in California.
[1:45:30] Yes, sir.
[1:45:31] And they'll be — they're over there.
[1:45:32] So they'll be able to tell you.
[1:45:33] Thank you, Caitlin.
[1:45:34] President Trump, did the suspect say anything or was he wearing anything that would allege
[1:45:43] some type of motive here?
[1:45:44] Nothing — no.
[1:45:45] I mean, he was a guy who looked pretty evil when he was down.
[1:45:50] You know, they had him down.
[1:45:51] He was fighting hard.
[1:45:52] He was a — in my opinion, a sick person.
[1:45:55] Who would do that but a sick person?
[1:45:57] But I think you're going to find everything about him.
[1:45:59] No reason to talk about it now.
[1:46:00] But tomorrow at this time, long before this time, you're going to know him.
[1:46:03] A lot of things about him.
[1:46:05] He was a — they seemed to think he was a lone wolf.
[1:46:08] And I feel that, too.
[1:46:09] Are you concerned about U.S. Secret Service protection ability?
[1:46:13] We saw several of the detailees take minutes to be escorted out of the room.
[1:46:17] No, they acted very quickly.
[1:46:19] No, I was very impressed by Secret Service.
[1:46:20] I mean, I'm the one — and, Mark, Wayne, you would agree with that, I think —
[1:46:24] I'm the one that would complain.
[1:46:28] You don't have to complain for me.
[1:46:29] I would be complaining.
[1:46:30] I'd be up here right now saying they didn't do their job.
[1:46:32] Well, believe me, because, you know, it's my life.
[1:46:35] And I want to live because I want to make this country great.
[1:46:38] That's why I want to live.
[1:46:39] But when you're impactful, they go after you.
[1:46:41] When you're not impactful, they leave you alone.
[1:46:43] Okay, a couple of — a couple of more.
[1:46:45] A couple of more.
[1:46:46] Go ahead, please.
[1:46:47] Is there any indication that this — this shooting was — could have been linked to the war in Iran?
[1:46:55] I don't think so, but you never know.
[1:46:58] We're going to know a lot.
[1:46:59] We'll — we have the best people in the world working on it, and we're going to know a lot.
[1:47:03] Please.
[1:47:04] Mr. President, there's a lot — there's — you, as well as some of us who have covered Butler, experienced another horrific day two years ago.
[1:47:13] Yeah.
[1:47:14] What's — what felt similar?
[1:47:16] You know, you had the First Lady with you today.
[1:47:18] What felt different?
[1:47:19] And you have another two-plus years in office.
[1:47:22] Are you concerned about something like this happening again?
[1:47:24] Well, I can't be concerned.
[1:47:25] I — I can only get great people.
[1:47:27] They did the job.
[1:47:28] A much — in my opinion, a much better job than Butler.
[1:47:31] Butler had one weak spot that we all know about.
[1:47:34] Somebody should have been up there.
[1:47:35] But even Butler, we had a — our sniper — sniper on our side — within 4.2 seconds from a distance of about 400 yards, one shot, and he was gone.
[1:47:53] And if he didn't do — now, you know, he's David.
[1:47:55] His name was David.
[1:47:56] I say, hello, David, every time I see him.
[1:47:59] David, I like you very much, David.
[1:48:01] But think of that.
[1:48:02] Now, if he doesn't hit him, and he hit him right between the eyes from 400 yards without any notice, nobody knew.
[1:48:10] He heard a sound.
[1:48:11] He looked over, and there was actually a tree that was somewhat in his way.
[1:48:15] You know the story very well.
[1:48:16] And he aimed — he fired.
[1:48:19] And if he didn't do that, beyond me, you would have had a lot more people killed who lost one great person and two people very badly hurt.
[1:48:27] They're okay now.
[1:48:28] But, no, that was — so, in a sense, you know, they — that was pretty amazing, the job they did.
[1:48:34] But — but — but they did have that one weak spot, as you know.
[1:48:38] They should have had that covered.
[1:48:40] Tonight, they had everything covered very quickly.
[1:48:42] And he was fast.
[1:48:43] He was running full blast.
[1:48:44] And they got him before they got any further.
[1:48:47] I was very far away.
[1:48:48] You know, he was — he hadn't anywhere close to breach the doors of the ballroom.
[1:48:52] The ballroom was sealed, and everybody in there.
[1:48:56] That's why, once those doors opened, they didn't want to do tonight.
[1:48:59] If the doors weren't opened, we could have probably done it tonight.
[1:49:02] But I think we're much better off rescheduling.
[1:49:05] Yeah, please.
[1:49:06] Mr. President, for you, and perhaps law enforcement as well,
[1:49:09] what is the level of confidence that this was a lone actor?
[1:49:13] And has the suspect made any statements to police while in custody?
[1:49:17] Yeah, I think it — it's just my — look, it's my profession.
[1:49:20] We have great professionals up here and outside that have been working with us.
[1:49:24] My impression is he was a lone wolf.
[1:49:28] Whack job.
[1:49:29] These are crazy people.
[1:49:30] These are crazy people.
[1:49:32] And they have to be dealt with.
[1:49:33] We had that in the second attempt, as you know.
[1:49:36] And he's — he's spending life in prison.
[1:49:39] Because if you let him out, they'll probably — you know,
[1:49:42] if he serves 10 years or 15 years, you let him out,
[1:49:45] he'll probably try it again with somebody else.
[1:49:47] They're sick people.
[1:49:48] We have a lot of sick people.
[1:49:50] But you're going to know — I think very shortly you're going to know, Todd,
[1:49:55] a lot about him.
[1:49:56] You're going to know a lot about him.
[1:49:58] Yeah, a couple of more.
[1:49:59] Yeah, please.
[1:50:03] Go ahead.
[1:50:04] Are you concerned about political violence?
[1:50:06] This could be politically motivated.
[1:50:08] All violence.
[1:50:09] I'm concerned about everything.
[1:50:10] But I can't be so concerned that you can't function.
[1:50:14] No, I'm here.
[1:50:15] It's a dangerous profession.
[1:50:17] You know, I tell the story — race car drivers.
[1:50:21] I think it's very dangerous.
[1:50:23] So if you take 1 percent and then take about 10 percent of 1 percent —
[1:50:30] just to break it down very easily — they die.
[1:50:33] So much less than 1 percent.
[1:50:35] 10 percent of 1 percent.
[1:50:37] I think bull riding is very dangerous.
[1:50:39] If you take about the same — 10 percent of 1 percent,
[1:50:42] much less than 1 percent.
[1:50:45] But if you take presidents, it's 5.8 percent.
[1:50:48] And about 8 percent are shot at.
[1:50:51] So nobody told me this was such a dangerous profession.
[1:50:58] If Marco would have told me, maybe I wouldn't have run.
[1:51:01] Maybe I would have said, I'll take a pass.
[1:51:03] No, it's a dangerous profession.
[1:51:05] But I don't view it that way.
[1:51:06] Look, I'm here to do a job.
[1:51:08] It's part of the job.
[1:51:10] It is a dangerous — it's — I can't imagine that there's any profession that's more dangerous.
[1:51:15] But I love the country, and I'm very proud.
[1:51:17] I'm very proud of the job we've done.
[1:51:19] You see what's happened.
[1:51:20] We have a great country.
[1:51:21] We've got, I think, the most successful, the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[1:51:24] This happened over a period of just a year.
[1:51:28] And we're going to do great things.
[1:51:30] But with that come risks.
[1:51:32] There's no question about it.
[1:51:33] Yeah.
[1:51:34] I mean, there's been so much political violence, not just aimed at yourself,
[1:51:39] but at other members of Congress, State House speakers, you name it.
[1:51:43] Is that just the cost of doing business to do politics in America anymore?
[1:51:47] Yeah.
[1:51:48] Well, he has very high spirits.
[1:51:52] And we told him we love him and respect him.
[1:51:56] And he's a very proud guy.
[1:51:59] He's very proud of what he does, Secret Service agent.
[1:52:03] And we looked at all of the conditions that took place tonight.
[1:52:09] And I will say, you know, it's not a particularly secure building.
[1:52:15] And I didn't want to say this, but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we're planning at the White House.
[1:52:26] It's actually a larger room, and it's much more secure.
[1:52:29] It's got — it's drone-proof.
[1:52:31] It's bulletproof glass.
[1:52:32] We need the ballroom.
[1:52:33] That's why Secret Service.
[1:52:34] That's why the military are demanding it.
[1:52:37] They've wanted the ballroom for 150 years for lots of different reasons.
[1:52:41] But today is a little bit different, because today we need levels of security that probably nobody's ever seen before.
[1:52:50] But everyone owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the courage of law enforcement — the law enforcement and working with the D.C. police.
[1:53:00] And just spoke with the mayor.
[1:53:02] And when we're finished, the police chief is going to take over and discuss it also from their viewpoint.
[1:53:11] But they also performed exactly as they were supposed to.
[1:53:16] And you see the attacker in different positions, but you also see the attacker totally subdued and under control.
[1:53:24] So, as you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill in Butler, Pennsylvania less than two years ago.
[1:53:38] You all know that story.
[1:53:39] And in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close.
[1:53:43] We really had — again, we had some great work done by law enforcement.
[1:53:49] But in light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our difference peacefully.
[1:53:57] We have to — we have to resolve our differences.
[1:54:00] I will say, you had Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Conservatives, Liberals, and Progressives.
[1:54:09] Those words are interchangeable, perhaps, but maybe they're not.
[1:54:12] But you had everybody in that room.
[1:54:13] Big crowd.
[1:54:14] Record-setting crowd.
[1:54:15] There was a record-setting group of people.
[1:54:20] And there was a tremendous amount of love in coming together.
[1:54:23] I watched — I watched, and I was very, very impressed by that.
[1:54:28] But we were — First Lady and I were taken very well care of, very quickly, very quickly rushed off the stage.
[1:54:38] Vice President J.D. Vance, who's here, was likewise beautifully done.
[1:54:45] He was just saying how quickly everybody acted — law enforcement, Secret Service in particular in this case, but law enforcement.
[1:54:51] Marco had the same thing.
[1:54:53] Pete was there.
[1:54:54] Pete didn't want any help.
[1:54:55] He didn't want anybody to help.
[1:54:56] He doesn't want anybody to help him.
[1:54:59] But he did get some, didn't you?
[1:55:01] And I think you also said that it was very impressive.
[1:55:05] So, with that, I'd like to ask Todd Blanche to come up, say a few words, and tell you it's already underway.
[1:55:12] The man has been captured.
[1:55:16] They're going to his apartment.
[1:55:20] I guess he lives in California.
[1:55:22] And he's a sick person, a very sick person.
[1:55:25] And we don't want things like this to happen.
[1:55:27] I think it's very important that I say, though — and I told the representatives of the evening, they did such a beautiful job.
[1:55:33] It was such a beautiful evening.
[1:55:35] And again, they're talking about free speech in our Constitution.
[1:55:38] That's what it's all about.
[1:55:39] Not just White House correspondence.
[1:55:42] It was really based on free speech in our Constitution.
[1:55:45] But I said, very importantly, that we'll do it again within the next 30 days.
[1:55:50] And we'll make it bigger and better and even nicer.
[1:55:55] So, I just want to thank everybody that was involved.
[1:55:58] I also want to thank the press, the media.
[1:56:00] You've been very responsible in your coverage, I will say.
[1:56:03] I've been seeing what's been out.
[1:56:04] You've been very responsible.
[1:56:06] So, Todd Blanche, I'd like to say a few words.
[1:56:08] Then we're going to have cash.
[1:56:10] And then you're going to go on.
[1:56:12] We can ask — I guess we can take a couple of questions.
[1:56:15] I want to thank the First Lady for — that was a rather traumatic experience for her.
[1:56:21] There was a lot of action taking place up there very quickly.
[1:56:26] But again, the response time was really incredible.
[1:56:30] And we're going to reschedule.
[1:56:32] We're going to do it again.
[1:56:33] We're not going to let anybody take over our society.
[1:56:36] We're not going to cancel things out, because we can't do that.
[1:56:39] We wanted to stay tonight.
[1:56:40] I will tell you, I fought like hell to stay.
[1:56:44] But they — it was protocol.
[1:56:48] They said, please, sir, because they didn't know a lot of — there was a lot of action going on.
[1:56:52] And they didn't know, could there be — probably a lone shooter.
[1:56:55] But we'll find out.
[1:56:56] We'll find out very quickly.
[1:56:57] They have it very well under control.
[1:56:59] So I want to thank everybody very much.
[1:57:01] And Todd Blanche, please.
[1:57:03] Thank you very much, Mr. President.
[1:57:08] Tonight you saw the very worst and the very best of this country.
[1:57:14] You saw the very worst by the actions of that coward that the President just talked about.
[1:57:18] But you also saw the very best, because you saw law enforcement do exactly what they're supposed to do.
[1:57:24] And you'll see the videos come out, I expect, very shortly.
[1:57:28] And you'll see law enforcement do exactly what we want them to do.
[1:57:32] And so I echo what Mr. President — what President Trump just said, that we are extraordinarily grateful and appreciative of the men and women of law enforcement that — that did their jobs tonight, including one who was — who was injured.
[1:57:44] This investigation is ongoing.
[1:57:46] I expect you will see charges filed shortly.
[1:57:49] The charges should be self-evident, given the conduct.
[1:57:53] But as you'll hear, there will be multiple charges around the shooting, around the possession of firearms and — and anything else that we can get — get on this guy.
[1:58:02] The investigation is obviously ongoing and just started.
[1:58:07] There is federal law enforcement already working on search warrants and doing their job.
[1:58:12] And I don't want to get ahead of them and don't want to get ahead of the work that they're doing even as we speak.
[1:58:17] Director Patel and I were just on the crime scene a short while ago.
[1:58:21] And everybody in this room should rest assured that the Metropolitan Police Department, the FBI, Secret Service — everybody's on the scene doing their job.
[1:58:31] I know that the police chief is going to give an update from the scene as soon as we're finished here.
[1:58:36] And I obviously will lead — lead the details of what — of what they have learned to him.
[1:58:43] But in the meantime, I just want to thank — thank everybody in this room for the courage.
[1:58:48] And I want to thank President Trump for his — for his words.
[1:58:52] And — and I promise you, justice will be served.
[1:58:55] Thank you.
[1:58:56] Director Patel.
[1:58:58] Thank you, General.
[1:58:59] Thank you, Mr. President.
[1:59:00] The President's absolutely right.
[1:59:03] You saw the best resolve of American law enforcement because you, Mr. President, inspire them 24-7, 365.
[1:59:08] You give them the resources that they need, and you know — they know that you have their back.
[1:59:12] And that is a changing dynamic in this country, and that's why you saw Brave Secret Service agents respond immediately, swiftly,
[1:59:19] subdue and take down the suspect, and safeguard the lives of thousands of individuals at that hotel.
[1:59:24] Thanks to our interagency partnership with the Department of Homeland Security and the Metropolitan Police Department,
[1:59:29] the FBI was rapidly deployed onto the scene, took over the Evidence Response Unit,
[1:59:34] is examining all the ballistics that were found on scene to include the long gun and the shell casings.
[1:59:39] We are conducting witness interviews as we speak.
[1:59:42] You will hear from our team on the scene there with the mayor and the head of the FBI field division there.
[1:59:47] But please know what the Attorney General has just said reigns no truer.
[1:59:50] You saw the very best of America tonight, the very best unite us at a time of uncertainty,
[1:59:55] because we have leadership here with the President and the Vice President that backs law enforcement,
[2:00:00] and the men and women that I shook their hands on the scene today could not have been prouder to show up on scene.
[2:00:05] And as the Attorney General said, make no mistake, we are conducting witness interviews.
[2:00:08] If you have any information, any information whatsoever related to this event, 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[2:00:14] 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[2:00:16] No piece of information is too small. No piece of information is inadequate.
[2:00:19] We will evaluate it all. We will also be conducting interviews of those that were there.
[2:00:23] And if any of those individuals have information, please come forward to law enforcement or the FBI or the Metropolitan Police Department.
[2:00:29] We will be examining this individual's background thoroughly.
[2:00:32] That process has already started.
[2:00:34] And we are going to ensure that he was either a lone wolf actor or anyone else that was responsible.
[2:00:39] We will analyze all evidence immediately to make sure that we safeguard this country.
[2:00:43] Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, thank you for your leadership, Attorney General and Homeland Secretary Mullen.
[2:00:48] Thank you for your partnership in law enforcement.
[2:00:50] Thank you. Thank you.
[2:00:52] Okay, we'll do a couple and then we go to the Chief.
[2:00:55] Madam Chairman, I just want to say you did a fantastic job.
[2:01:00] What a beautiful evening. And we're going to reschedule.
[2:01:02] It's very tough for her to ask a killer question, right?
[2:01:10] But you have done a fantastic job. Please.
[2:01:12] Thank you, Mr. President. I appreciate it.
[2:01:14] As you mentioned, it all happened so quickly.
[2:01:17] And I wonder, especially because, unfortunately, you have experience with
[2:01:23] these sorts of threats. In that moment, when you realized there was a threat
[2:01:29] and service agents were telling us to get down,
[2:01:32] can you describe what was going through your mind, how you were feeling in that moment?
[2:01:38] That's a very good question, actually.
[2:01:40] It was — it's always shocking when something like this happens.
[2:01:43] Happened to me a little bit. And that never changes.
[2:01:47] The fact — we were sitting right next to each other — the First Lady on my right —
[2:01:54] and I heard a noise and sort of thought it was a tray.
[2:01:58] I thought it was a tray going down. You know, I've heard that many times.
[2:02:02] And it was a pretty loud noise. And it was from quite far away.
[2:02:05] He hadn't breached the area at all. They really got him.
[2:02:09] But — so it was quite far away. But it was a gun.
[2:02:12] And some people really understood that pretty quickly. Other people didn't.
[2:02:19] I was watching to see what was happening. Probably should have gone down even faster.
[2:02:24] Melania was very cognizant, I think, of what happened.
[2:02:28] I think she knew immediately what happened. She was saying,
[2:02:31] that's a bad noise. And we were whisked away along with other people.
[2:02:40] But we were really whisked away. And again, the performance of the Secret Service and the police.
[2:02:46] All of the law enforcement. I thought it was really good.
[2:02:48] So it was very quick. There wasn't a lot of time to be thinking.
[2:02:51] Because it was a matter of seconds before we were out the door and gone into an area.
[2:02:56] We very much — and you wanted to, too — we very much wanted to continue it.
[2:03:00] Because I don't like to let these sick people — these thugs, these horrible, horrible people —
[2:03:06] change the fabric of our life, change the course of what we do.
[2:03:10] So we held out. You were there. We held out right till the end.
[2:03:14] But they didn't want to take a chance. And I understand. It was protocol.
[2:03:17] But we're going to be doing one, hopefully, within the next 30 days or sooner.
[2:03:21] And I am ready, willing, and able. And I was all set to really rip it.
[2:03:28] And I said to my people, this would be the most inappropriate speech ever made if I said one.
[2:03:33] So I'll have to save it. I don't know if I could ever be as —
[2:03:36] I could ever be as rough as I was going to be tonight.
[2:03:39] I think I'm going to be probably very nice. I'll be very boring the next time.
[2:03:42] But we're going to have a great event. And you did a fantastic job.
[2:03:45] Thank you very much. Peter, go ahead.
[2:03:47] Thank you, President Trump. There's a report in the New York Post
[2:03:50] that this assailant assembled his weapon somewhere on site at the hotel.
[2:03:57] What do you think about that? And I ask respectfully, why do you think this keeps happening to you?
[2:04:05] Well, you know, I've studied assassinations. And I must tell you, the most impactful people — the people that do the most.
[2:04:16] You take a look at the people — Abraham Lincoln. I mean, you go through the people that have gone through this, where they got them.
[2:04:24] But the people that do the most, the people that make the biggest impact, they're the ones that they go after.
[2:04:32] They don't go after the ones that don't do much, because they like it that way.
[2:04:36] And when you look at the people that have either — whether it was an attempt or a successful attempt — they're very impactful people.
[2:04:45] Just take a look at the names here. The big names. And I hate to say I'm honored by that, but I've done a lot. We've done a lot.
[2:04:55] We have — we've taken this country, and we were a laughingstock for years, and now we're the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[2:05:02] We've changed this country. And there are a lot of people that are not happy about that. So I think that's the answer, Peter.
[2:05:09] And after Butler, your team for a while rethought outdoor events.
[2:05:13] Yeah.
[2:05:14] Do you think that you now need to rethink outdoor events?
[2:05:16] No. Well, then you just don't do events. No, I can't do that. I have to — you know, it is what it is. We have to do it.
[2:05:22] The room was very, very secure. You know, he charged from 50 yards away, so he was very far away from the room.
[2:05:29] And what did you think when you saw the video of how fast he was running?
[2:05:32] He was moving. He was really moving. And the reaction time was great.
[2:05:36] Boy, those guys, they had their guns drawn literally by the time he was there. They were shooting.
[2:05:41] That's right.
[2:05:42] They were — I thought they were very impressive. I thought they were very impressive.
[2:05:45] And if I didn't, I'd let you know, you know. I'm not going to be — I would not stand for that.
[2:05:50] No, I thought they were very impressive.
[2:05:52] President Trump, and thank you for updating us on the suspect earlier.
[2:05:56] Were you aware of any threats? Was your team aware of any threats beforehand?
[2:06:00] And do you believe you were the target of this tonight?
[2:06:03] I guess. I mean, these people are — they're crazy.
[2:06:05] They're crazy. They're crazy. And, you know, you never know.
[2:06:08] He was very far away from me. He had to go through a lot.
[2:06:11] You know, we had — we had resources all over.
[2:06:15] We had resources sitting at tables, literally, in disguise, sitting maybe at your table.
[2:06:20] Who knows? But we had — we had people all over the room.
[2:06:23] So he had a long way to go. That was really a first line of defense.
[2:06:27] And they got him. And they really, you know, they acted incredibly.
[2:06:31] No, we have — we've had no — there was no notification. We had no idea.
[2:06:35] Go ahead, Caitlin.
[2:06:36] Do you not have any political motivations from this —
[2:06:38] Well, you never know. No.
[2:06:39] We'll be able to tell you that maybe by tomorrow or the next day.
[2:06:42] You know, he's in custody. And they're asking him a lot of questions.
[2:06:46] I guess they're going over, Todd. And they're — they're already at his apartment.
[2:06:50] He lives in California.
[2:06:51] Yes, sir.
[2:06:52] And they'll be — they're over there. So they'll be able to tell you. Thank you, Caitlin.
[2:06:57] President Trump, did the suspect say anything or was he wearing anything that would allege some type of motive here?
[2:07:05] Nothing. No. I mean, he was a guy who looked pretty evil when he was down.
[2:07:11] You know, they had him down. He was fighting hard. He was a — in my opinion, a sick person.
[2:07:16] Who would do that but a sick person? But I think you're going to find everything about him.
[2:07:20] No reason to talk about it now. But tomorrow at this time, long before this time, you're going to know a lot of things about him.
[2:07:26] He was a — they seemed to think he was a lone wolf. And I feel that, too.
[2:07:31] Are you concerned about U.S. Secret Service protection ability?
[2:07:34] We saw several of the detailees take minutes to be escorted out of the room.
[2:07:39] No, they acted very quickly. No, I was very impressed by Secret Service.
[2:07:42] I mean, I'm the one — and, Mark Wayne, you would agree with that, I think —
[2:07:46] I'm the one that would complain. You don't have to complain for me.
[2:07:50] I would be complaining. I'd be up here right now saying they didn't do their job.
[2:07:53] Oh, believe me. Because, you know, it's my life.
[2:07:56] And I want to live because I want to make this country great. That's why I want to live.
[2:08:00] But when you're impactful, they go after you. When you're not impactful, they leave you alone.
[2:08:04] Okay, a couple of — a couple of more. A couple of more. Go ahead, please.
[2:08:08] Is there any indication that this — this shooting was — could have been linked to the war in Iran?
[2:08:16] I don't think so, but you never know. We're going to know a lot.
[2:08:21] We'll — we have the best people in the world working on it, and we're going to know a lot. Please.
[2:08:25] Mr. President, there's a lot — there's — you, as well as some of us who have covered Butler, experienced another horrific day two years ago.
[2:08:35] Mr. Yeah. What's — what felt similar? You know, you had the First Lady with you today. What felt different?
[2:08:41] And you have another two-plus years in office. Are you concerned about something like this happening again?
[2:08:46] Mr. Well, I can't be concerned. I can only get great people. They did the job. A much — in my opinion, a much better job than Butler.
[2:08:53] Butler had one weak spot that we all know about. Somebody should have been up there.
[2:08:57] But even Butler, we had a — our sniper — sniper on our side — within 4.2 seconds from a distance of about 400 yards.
[2:09:10] One shot, and he was gone. And if he didn't do — now, you know, he's David. His name was David.
[2:09:18] I say, hello, David, every time I see him. David. I like you very much, David. But think of that.
[2:09:23] Now, if he doesn't hit him, and he hit him right between the eyes from 400 yards without any notice, nobody knew.
[2:09:32] He heard a sound. He looked over, and there was actually a tree that was somewhat in his way.
[2:09:36] You know the story very well. And he aimed — he fired. And if he didn't do that, beyond me,
[2:09:43] you would have had a lot more people killed who lost one great person and two people very badly hurt.
[2:09:48] They're okay now. But no, that was — so, in a sense, you know, they — that was pretty amazing, the job they did.
[2:09:55] But — but — but they did have that one weak spot, as you know. They should have had that covered.
[2:10:00] Tonight, they had everything covered very quickly. And he was fast. He was running full blast.
[2:10:05] And they got him before they got any further. I was very far away. You know, he was — he hadn't anywhere close to breach the doors of the ballroom.
[2:10:13] The ballroom was sealed, and everybody in there. And that's why, once those doors opened, they didn't want to do tonight.
[2:10:21] If the doors weren't opened, we could have probably done it tonight. But I think we're much better off rescheduling.
[2:10:26] Yeah, please.
[2:10:27] The Press, Mr. President, for you and perhaps law enforcement as well, what is the level of confidence that this was a lone actor?
[2:10:34] And has the suspect made any statements to police while in custody?
[2:10:38] The President, I think — just my — look, it's not my profession. We have great professionals up here and outside that have been working with us.
[2:10:45] My impression is he was a lone wolf. Whack job. These are crazy people. These are crazy people.
[2:10:53] And they have to be dealt with. We had that in the second attempt, as you know.
[2:10:58] And he's spending life in prison. Because if you let him out, they'll probably — you know, if he serves 10 years or 15 years, you let him out,
[2:11:06] he'll probably try it again with somebody else. They're sick people. We have a lot of sick people.
[2:11:11] But you're going to know, I think very shortly, you're going to know, Todd, a lot about him.
[2:11:18] You're going to know a lot about him. Yeah, a couple of more. Yeah, please, go ahead.
[2:11:25] Are you concerned about political violence? This could be politically motivated.
[2:11:29] All violence. I'm concerned about everything. Look, but I can't be so concerned that you can't function.
[2:11:35] No, I'm here. It's a dangerous profession. You know, I tell the story — race car drivers.
[2:11:42] I think it's very dangerous. So if you take 1 percent and then take about 10 percent of 1 percent,
[2:11:51] just to break it down very easily, they die. So much less than 1 percent. 10 percent of 1 percent.
[2:11:57] I think bull riding is very dangerous. If you take about the same 10 percent of 1 percent, much less than 1 percent.
[2:12:04] But if you take presidents, it's 5.8 percent. And about 8 percent are shot at.
[2:12:13] So nobody told me this was such a dangerous profession. If Marco would have told me,
[2:12:20] maybe I wouldn't have run. Maybe I would have said, I'll take a pass.
[2:12:23] No, it's a dangerous profession. But I don't view it that way. Look, I'm here to do a job.
[2:12:28] It's part of the job. It is a dangerous — I can't imagine that there's any profession that's more dangerous.
[2:12:36] But I love the country, and I'm very proud. I'm very proud of the job we've done. You see what's happened.
[2:12:41] We have a great country. We've got, I think, the most successful, the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[2:12:46] This happened over a period of just a year. And we're going to do great things.
[2:12:51] But with that come risks. There's no question about it. Yeah.
[2:12:56] I mean, there's been so much political violence, not just aimed at yourself, but at other members of Congress,
[2:13:02] State House speakers, you name it. Is that just the cost of doing business to do politics in America anymore?
[2:13:08] Yeah, well, he has very high spirits. And we told him we love him and respect him. And he's a very proud guy.
[2:13:20] He's very proud of what he does, Secret Service agent. And we looked at all of the conditions that took place tonight.
[2:13:30] And I will say, you know, it's not a particularly secure building. And I didn't want to say this,
[2:13:39] but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we're planning at the White House.
[2:13:46] It's actually a larger room and it's much more secure. It's got drone proof. It's bulletproof glass.
[2:13:52] We need the ballroom. That's why Secret Service. That's why the military are demanding it.
[2:13:56] They've wanted the ballroom for 150 years for lots of different reasons.
[2:14:02] But today's a little bit different because today we need levels of security that probably nobody's ever seen before.
[2:14:10] But everyone owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the courage of law enforcement.
[2:14:18] The law enforcement and working with the D.C. police and just spoke with the mayor.
[2:14:23] And when we're finished, the police chief is going to take over and discuss it also from their viewpoint.
[2:14:33] But they also performed exactly as they were supposed to. And you see the attacker in different positions.
[2:14:40] But you also see the attacker totally subdued and under control.
[2:14:45] So, as you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill.
[2:14:55] In Butler, Pennsylvania, less than two years ago. You all know that story.
[2:15:00] And in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close.
[2:15:04] We really had, again, we had some great work done by law enforcement.
[2:15:10] But in light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our difference peacefully.
[2:15:18] We have to resolve our differences.
[2:15:22] I will say, you had Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives.
[2:15:29] Those words are interchangeable, perhaps, but maybe they're not.
[2:15:33] But you had everybody in that room, big crowd, record-setting crowd.
[2:15:37] There was a record-setting group of people.
[2:15:41] And there was a tremendous amount of love and coming together.
[2:15:45] I watched, I watched, and I was very, very impressed by that.
[2:15:49] But we were, First Lady and I were taken very well care, very quickly, very quickly rushed off the stage.
[2:15:59] Vice President J.D. Vance, who's here, was likewise beautifully done.
[2:16:06] He was just saying how quickly everybody acted.
[2:16:09] Law enforcement, Secret Service in particular in this case, but law enforcement.
[2:16:12] Marco had the same thing.
[2:16:14] Pete was there. Pete didn't want any help.
[2:16:16] He didn't want anybody to help him.
[2:16:18] But he did get some, didn't you?
[2:16:22] And I think you also said that it was very impressive.
[2:16:26] So with that, I'd like to ask Todd Blanche to come up, say a few words, and tell you it's already underway.
[2:16:33] The man has been captured.
[2:16:38] They're going to his apartment. I guess he lives in California.
[2:16:42] And he's a sick person, a very sick person.
[2:16:45] And we don't want things like this to happen.
[2:16:48] I think it's very important that I say, though, and I told the representatives of the evening.
[2:16:53] They did such a beautiful job. It was such a beautiful evening.
[2:16:56] And again, they're talking about free speech in our Constitution.
[2:16:59] That's what it's all about. Not just White House correspondence.
[2:17:03] It's really, it was really based on free speech in our Constitution.
[2:17:06] But I said very importantly that we'll do it again within the next 30 days.
[2:17:11] It will make it bigger and better and even nicer.
[2:17:15] So I just want to thank everybody that was involved.
[2:17:19] I also want to thank the press, the media.
[2:17:21] You've been very responsible in your coverage.
[2:17:24] I will say I've been seeing what's been out. You've been very responsible.
[2:17:27] So, Todd Blanche, I'd like to say a few words.
[2:17:29] I know we're going to have cash. And then you're going to go on.
[2:17:33] We can ask, I guess we can take a couple of questions.
[2:17:36] I want to thank the First Lady for, that was a rather traumatic experience for her.
[2:17:42] There was a lot of action taking place up there very quickly.
[2:17:46] But again, the response time was really incredible.
[2:17:51] And we're going to reschedule. We're going to do it again.
[2:17:54] We're not going to let anybody take over our society.
[2:17:57] We're not going to cancel things out because we can't do that.
[2:18:00] We wanted to stay tonight. I will tell you, I fought like hell to stay.
[2:18:06] But they, it was protocol. They said, please, sir,
[2:18:10] because they didn't know a lot of, there was a lot of action going on
[2:18:14] and they didn't know could there be probably a lone shooter.
[2:18:17] But we'll find out. We'll find out very quickly.
[2:18:19] They have it very well under control.
[2:18:21] So I want to thank everybody very much. And Todd Blanche, please.
[2:18:25] Thank you very much, Mr. President.
[2:18:30] Tonight you saw the very worst and the very best of this country.
[2:18:35] You saw the very worst by the actions of that coward that the president just talked about.
[2:18:40] But you also saw the very best because you saw law enforcement do exactly what they're supposed to do.
[2:18:45] And you'll see the videos come out. I expect very shortly.
[2:18:49] And you'll see law enforcement do exactly what we want them to do.
[2:18:53] And so I echo what Mr. President, what President Trump just said,
[2:18:56] that we are extraordinarily grateful and appreciative of the men and women of law enforcement that,
[2:19:01] that did their jobs tonight, including one who was, who was injured.
[2:19:05] This investigation is ongoing. I expect you will see charges filed shortly.
[2:19:10] The charges should be self-evident given the conduct.
[2:19:13] But as you'll hear, there will be multiple charges around the shooting,
[2:19:18] around the possession of firearms and anything else that we can get on this guy.
[2:19:23] The investigation is obviously ongoing and just started.
[2:19:27] There is federal law enforcement already working on search warrants and doing their job.
[2:19:34] And I don't want to get ahead of them and don't want to get ahead of the work that they're doing even as we speak.
[2:19:39] Director Patel and I were just on the crime scene a short while ago.
[2:19:44] And everybody in this room should rest assured that the Metropolitan Police Department,
[2:19:48] the FBI, Secret Service, everybody's on the scene doing their job.
[2:19:52] I know that the police chief is going to give an update from the scene as soon as we're finished here.
[2:19:57] And I obviously will leave the details of what they have learned to him.
[2:20:03] But in the meantime, I just want to thank everybody in this room for the courage,
[2:20:08] and I want to thank President Trump for his words.
[2:20:12] And I promise you, justice will be served.
[2:20:16] Thank you.
[2:20:17] Director Patel.
[2:20:18] Thank you, General.
[2:20:20] Thank you, Mr. President.
[2:20:21] The President's absolutely right.
[2:20:23] You saw the best resolve of American law enforcement because you, Mr. President,
[2:20:27] inspired them 24-7, 365.
[2:20:29] You give them the resources that they need and you know, they know that you have their back.
[2:20:33] And that is a changing dynamic in this country.
[2:20:35] And that's why you saw brave Secret Service agents respond immediately, swiftly,
[2:20:39] subdue and take down the suspect and safeguard the lives of thousands of individuals at that hotel.
[2:20:45] Thanks to our interagency partnership with the Department of Homeland Security and the Metropolitan Police Department,
[2:20:50] the FBI was rapidly deployed onto the scene, took over the evidence response unit,
[2:20:54] is examining all the ballistics that were found on scene to include the long gun and the shell casings.
[2:21:00] We are conducting witness interviews as we speak.
[2:21:03] You will hear from our team on the scene there with the mayor and the head of the FBI field division there.
[2:21:08] But please know what the Attorney General has just said, reigns no truer.
[2:21:11] You saw the very best of America tonight.
[2:21:14] The very best unite us at a time of uncertainty because we have leadership here with the President,
[2:21:19] the Vice President that backs law enforcement.
[2:21:21] And the men and women that I shook their hands on the scene today could not have been prouder to show up on scene.
[2:21:26] And as the Attorney General said, make no mistake, we are conducting witness interviews.
[2:21:30] If you have any information, any information whatsoever related to this event, 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[2:21:36] 1-800-CALL-FBI.
[2:21:37] No piece of information is too small.
[2:21:39] No piece of information is inadequate.
[2:21:41] We will evaluate it all.
[2:21:42] We will also be conducting interviews of those that were there.
[2:21:45] And if any of those individuals have information, please come forward to the law enforcement
[2:21:49] or the FBI or the Metropolitan Police Department.
[2:21:51] We will be examining this individual's background thoroughly.
[2:21:53] That process has already started.
[2:21:55] And we are going to ensure that he was either a lone wolf actor or anyone else that was responsible.
[2:22:00] We will analyze all evidence immediately to make sure that we safeguard this country.
[2:22:04] Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, thank you for your leadership.
[2:22:06] Attorney General and Homeland Secretary Mullen, thank you for your partnership in law enforcement.
[2:22:10] Thank you.
[2:22:11] Thank you.
[2:22:13] Okay, we'll do a couple and then we go to the Chief.
[2:22:15] Madam Chairman, I just want to say you did a fantastic job.
[2:22:20] What a beautiful evening and we're going to reschedule.
[2:22:23] It's very tough for her to ask a killer question, right?
[2:22:30] But you have done a fantastic job.
[2:22:32] Please.
[2:22:33] Thank you, Mr. President.
[2:22:34] I appreciate it.
[2:22:35] As you mentioned, it all happened so quickly.
[2:22:37] And I wonder, especially because, unfortunately, you have experience with these sorts of threats.
[2:22:46] In that moment, when you realized there was a threat and service agents were telling us to get down,
[2:22:53] can you describe what was going through your mind, how you were feeling in that moment?
[2:22:59] That's a very good question, actually.
[2:23:01] It was, it's always shocking when something like this happens.
[2:23:05] Happened to me a little bit.
[2:23:07] And that never changes.
[2:23:09] The fact, we were sitting right next to each other.
[2:23:13] The first lady on my right.
[2:23:15] And I heard a noise and sort of thought it was a tray.
[2:23:19] I thought it was a tray going down.
[2:23:21] I've heard that many times and it was pretty loud noise.
[2:23:24] And it was from quite far away.
[2:23:26] He hadn't breached the area at all.
[2:23:30] They really got him.
[2:23:31] But, so it was quite far away.
[2:23:33] But it was a gun.
[2:23:34] And some people really understood that pretty quickly.
[2:23:39] Other people didn't.
[2:23:40] I was watching to see what was happening.
[2:23:43] Probably should have gone down even faster.
[2:23:45] Melania was very cognizant, I think, of what happened.
[2:23:49] I think she knew immediately what happened.
[2:23:52] She was saying, that's a bad noise.
[2:23:55] And we were whisked away along with other people.
[2:24:01] But we were really whisked away.
[2:24:03] And again, the performance of the Secret Service and the police,
[2:24:06] all of the law enforcement, I thought it was really good.
[2:24:10] So, it was very quick.
[2:24:11] There wasn't a lot of time to be thinking.
[2:24:13] Because it was a matter of seconds before we were out the door
[2:24:16] and gone into an area.
[2:24:18] We very much, and you wanted to too, we very much wanted to continue it.
[2:24:22] Because I don't like to let these sick people, these thugs,
[2:24:26] these horrible, horrible people, change the fabric of our life,
[2:24:30] change the course of what we do.
[2:24:32] So, we held out.
[2:24:34] You were there.
[2:24:35] We held out right until the end.
[2:24:36] But they didn't want to take a chance.
[2:24:37] And I understand.
[2:24:38] There was protocol.
[2:24:39] But we're going to be doing one, hopefully, within the next 30 days or sooner.
[2:24:43] And I am ready, willing, and able.
[2:24:45] And I was all set to really rip it.
[2:24:49] And I said to my people, this would be the most inappropriate speech ever made if I said one.
[2:24:54] So, I'll have to save it.
[2:24:56] I don't know if I could ever be as rough as I was going to be tonight.
[2:24:59] I think I'm going to be probably very nice.
[2:25:01] I'll be very boring the next time.
[2:25:03] But we're going to have a great event.
[2:25:04] And you did a fantastic job.
[2:25:06] Thank you very much.
[2:25:07] Peter, go ahead.
[2:25:08] Thank you, President Trump.
[2:25:09] There's a report in the New York Post that this assailant assembled his weapon somewhere on site at the hotel.
[2:25:18] What do you think about that?
[2:25:19] And I ask respectfully, why do you think this keeps happening to you?
[2:25:26] Well, you know, I've studied assassinations.
[2:25:31] And I must tell you, the most impactful people, the people that do the most, you take a look at the people, Abraham Lincoln.
[2:25:41] I mean, you go through the people that have gone through this where they got them.
[2:25:45] But the people that do the most, the people that make the biggest impact, they're the ones that they go after.
[2:25:52] They don't go after the ones that don't do much because they like it that way.
[2:25:58] And when you look at the people that have either, whether it was an attempt or a successful attempt, they're very impactful people.
[2:26:07] Just take a look at the names here, the big names.
[2:26:10] And I hate to say I'm honored by that, but I've done a lot.
[2:26:16] We've done a lot.
[2:26:17] We have, we've taken this country and we were a laughing stock for years.
[2:26:21] And now we're the hottest country anywhere in the world.
[2:26:23] We've changed this country.
[2:26:25] And there are a lot of people that are not happy about that.
[2:26:28] So I think that's the answer, Peter.
[2:26:30] And after Butler, your team for a while rethought outdoor events.
[2:26:34] Yeah.
[2:26:35] Do you think that you now need to rethink indoor events?
[2:26:37] No.
[2:26:38] Well, then you just don't do events.
[2:26:39] Now I can't do that.
[2:26:40] We have to, what it, you know, it is what it is.
[2:26:42] We have to do it.
[2:26:43] The room was very, very secure.
[2:26:45] You know, he charged from 50 yards away.
[2:26:47] So he was very far away from the room.
[2:26:49] And what did you think when you saw the video of how fast he was running?
[2:26:52] He was moving.
[2:26:53] He was really moving.
[2:26:55] And the reaction time was great.
[2:26:57] Boy, those guys, they had their guns drawn literally by the time he was there.
[2:27:01] They were shooting.
[2:27:02] That's right.
[2:27:03] They were, I thought they were very impressive.
[2:27:05] I thought they were very impressive.
[2:27:06] And if I didn't, I'd let you know, you know.
[2:27:08] I'm not going to be, I would not stand for that.
[2:27:12] No, I thought they were very impressive.
[2:27:14] Thank you, President Trump.
[2:27:15] And thank you for updating us on the suspect earlier.
[2:27:18] Were you aware of any threats?
[2:27:20] Was your team aware of any threats beforehand?
[2:27:22] And do you believe you were the target of this tonight?
[2:27:24] I guess.
[2:27:25] I mean, these people are, they're crazy.
[2:27:27] They're crazy.
[2:27:28] And, you know, you never know.
[2:27:29] It was very far away from me.
[2:27:30] You had to go through a lot.
[2:27:31] You know, we had, we had resources all over.
[2:27:36] We had resources sitting at tables, literally in disguise, sitting maybe at your table.
[2:27:42] Who knows?
[2:27:43] But we had, we had people all over the room.
[2:27:45] So he had a long way to go.
[2:27:46] That was really a first line of defense.
[2:27:48] And they got him.
[2:27:49] And they really, you know, they acted incredibly.
[2:27:51] No, we have no, we've had no, there was no notification.
[2:27:55] We had no idea.
[2:27:56] Go ahead, Kevin.
[2:27:57] Do you know any political motivations from this?
[2:27:59] Well, you never know.
[2:28:00] No, we'll be able to tell you that maybe by tomorrow or the next day.
[2:28:03] You know, he's in custody and they're asking him a lot of questions.
[2:28:07] I guess they're going over, Todd, and they're, they're already at his apartment.
[2:28:11] He lives in California.
[2:28:12] Yes, sir.
[2:28:14] And they'll be, they're over there.
[2:28:16] So they'll be able to tell you.
[2:28:17] Thank you, Caitlin.
[2:28:18] President Trump, did the suspect say anything or was he wearing anything that would allege some type of motive here?
[2:28:27] Nothing.
[2:28:28] No.
[2:28:29] I mean, he was a guy who looked pretty evil when he was down.
[2:28:33] You know, they had him down.
[2:28:34] He was fighting hard.
[2:28:35] He was a obvious, in my opinion, a sick person.
[2:28:38] Who would do that?
[2:28:39] But a couple of, a couple of more.
[2:28:40] A couple of more.
[2:28:41] Go ahead, please.
[2:28:42] Is there any indication that this, this shooting was, could have been linked to the war in Iran?
[2:28:50] I don't think so, but you never know.
[2:28:53] We're going to know a lot.
[2:28:54] Well, we have the best people in the world working on it and we're going to know a lot.
[2:28:58] Please.
[2:28:59] Mr. President, there's a lot.
[2:29:00] There's, um, you as well as some of us who have covered Butler experienced another horrific day two years ago.
[2:29:08] Yeah.
[2:29:09] What's, what felt similar?
[2:29:10] You know, you had the first lady with you today.
[2:29:12] What felt different?
[2:29:13] And you have another two plus years in office.
[2:29:17] Are you concerned about something like this happening again?
[2:29:19] Well, I can't be concerned.
[2:29:20] I can only get great people.
[2:29:22] They did the job.
[2:29:23] A much, in my opinion, a much better job than Butler.
[2:29:26] Butler had one weak spot that we all know about.
[2:29:29] Somebody should have been up there.
[2:29:30] But even Butler, uh, we had a, uh, our sniper, sniper on our side within 4.2 seconds from a distance of about 400 yards.
[2:29:42] One shot and he was gone.
[2:29:46] And if he didn't do it now, you know, he's David.
[2:29:50] His name was David.
[2:29:51] I say, hello, David, every time I see him.
[2:29:53] David, I like you very much, David.
[2:29:56] But think of that.
[2:29:57] Now, if he doesn't hit him and he hit him right between the eyes from 400 yards without any notice, nobody knew.
[2:30:05] He heard a sound.
