[2:00] A day after shots rang out just outside the ballroom [2:05] of the White House Correspondents' Dinner, [2:07] forcing guests, including President Trump and members of his cabinet, [2:10] to take cover, authorities are investigating why the gunman opened fire. [2:15] Law enforcement officials tell CBS News the suspect, [2:18] 31-year-old Cole Allen from California, [2:21] wrote a manifesto in which he stated he wanted to target administration officials, [2:26] quote, prioritized from highest ranking to lowest. [2:28] Sources tell CBS News that his brother called police in New London, Connecticut, [2:34] flagging an alarming email he received from Allen. [2:37] In an interview on Fox News on Sunday, [2:40] the President said he wished law enforcement had been alerted sooner. [2:43] Well, I heard of the London situation, [2:46] and I wish they would have told us about it a little bit. [2:48] The President also praised the quick action of Secret Service [2:52] in keeping the thousands of guests at the Washington Hilton safe Saturday night. [2:56] Agents stopped the suspect as he tried to break through the security checkpoint. [3:00] It's a tough thing, though, when you have a hotel in the middle of a city [3:03] with buildings all around and hotel rooms on top of you, [3:06] and, you know, it's a tough situation. [3:09] But I thought Secret Service and law enforcement, [3:14] including, that includes D.C. police, law enforcement was great. [3:18] One Secret Service officer was shot but is said to be doing well [3:22] and was released from the hospital on Sunday. [3:25] Security experts say the shooting raises questions [3:28] about whether enough was done to secure the hotel ahead of the dinner. [3:32] You know, it's difficult because you have, obviously, [3:34] a hotel that's open to the public. [3:35] They have other guests that are unassociated with the event last night, [3:40] and they are going to have to take a hard look [3:42] at how you maybe screen those guests coming in.
