'The Five' on a potential 2028 SHOWDOWN

[0:00] Kamala and Gavin are currently battling over who has worse political instincts [0:04] with Mamala stopping by Don Lemon's podcast for some deep thoughts on the word hope. [0:10] Let that light kind of carry us in particular through moments of darkness [0:14] that we not only act on that hope but we inspire that hope in each other and in particular at this [0:24] moment it is so important that we not only have hope but that we understand that that should be a verb. [0:35] And knee pads is getting down on his knees for the big guy. [0:38] Gavin Newsom getting called out by Axios for embracing Joe Biden in the run-up to the 28th [0:43] primary. Watch this. Our former president who I think was one of the most successful presidents [0:50] in the last century and that is Joe Biden and I will defend that to my grave. I'll never turn [0:55] my back on Joe Biden. I see my father in so many ways the way I see President Biden. That's one [1:03] of the reasons I was so loyal to the end. Dana, did you catch Carl's reaction? [1:07] Yes, I thought I think Carl's great. He's like, wait, you just said what? [1:13] I like Lemon's reaction too, as Kamala Harris was, he just was saying like, lady, I gave you a light, [1:19] you basically are hanging yourself here. I tried to help you. I'm going to do something [1:24] I don't always do. And I'm going to say, I think, even though I think on the merits and in reality, [1:30] and in fact, Gavin Newsom is wrong and that this is likely a bad strategy. However, [1:37] he knows that Kamala is distancing herself from Biden. She's throwing Biden under the bus. [1:45] Biden still has a lot of goodwill with the Black community. Gavin Newsom's numbers with the Black [1:51] community are very low. Kamala Harris's are still fairly high, relatively high. So he is trying to [1:58] figure out a way to position himself in a way to say that says, let me be your champion because she [2:06] won't be. That is, I hadn't thought about it that way, Jessica. That makes a lot of sense. Or [2:13] is like blind loyalty to an idiot, does that override that? Well, you do blind loyalty to an [2:21] idiot every day. Two in a row. I'm just going to leave. I think I'm done for the day and it's only [2:29] Monday. That idiot's running circles around you guys. Whatever. Let's talk about that reflecting pool. [2:36] We will. It's like Dana and I were sharing notes today. Probably also doesn't want to alienate [2:44] older Black voters who feel warmly about Biden from 2020. Also, I think that what Newsom understands, [2:51] and it's interesting for someone who is so hyper online, but also gets that Twitter isn't real life, [2:57] right? And there are all of these people out in the country who show up to vote every single time, [3:02] right? Midterms, primaries, general elections. And they're not following every single plot line. [3:08] They're annoyed at Joe Biden, right? They say like, I really wish he had gotten out earlier. Some of them [3:13] might be in the crazy camp and even say, if Joe Biden had stayed on the top of the ticket, [3:18] maybe we would have done better. I think that that's totally absurd. But I think that Newsom is [3:23] aware of that. I think it will also be distinguishing in a primary, not just with Kamala, [3:27] who's running away from him. But Josh Shapiro, Pete Buttigieg, you know, people are going to have [3:33] to make smart criticism of aspects of the Biden administration. But I think that there is also [3:39] this genuine affection that they have for one another. They've known each other a long time. [3:43] And I think that Newsom also just respects public service at that level, that the guy spent five [3:47] decades serving the country and that that's meaningful. Does that work maybe in a primary? [3:54] Yeah. But maybe when you get to the general, you look kind of foolish. [3:57] Yeah, I don't think it's going to work. It might work in a primary, I guess. And Dana's analysis is [4:02] the smartest thing of any of it. But I still don't actually think it's going to actually make a [4:08] difference. Right. I think that it's not going to work because, look, Gavin Newsom will say [4:13] absolutely whatever he needs to say to try to win the nomination. And it's particularly funny, [4:20] given the fact that Kamala Harris just 10 minutes ago couldn't find a single thing to criticize [4:25] about Joe Biden when she went during the last election. I think that it's all a calculation by [4:32] Newsom that he recognizes that that the upcoming primary for Democrats is going to be all the [4:38] enthusiasm is on the commie side of the party with the Plattner, AOC, Bernie Sanders. He recognizes [4:47] that the party has twice rigged their own primaries in order to keep Bernie from getting the nomination. [4:54] And he figures, OK, well, I'll be the guy over here in the, you know, claiming to be in the sane [5:01] wing of the party, which is hysterical. He's from California. But it's no more hysterical than when [5:06] Nancy Pelosi was supposedly from the sane wing of the party after the lunatics took over the asylum. [5:13] But how funny is it going to be if we wind up with a situation where you have, after all of [5:19] the race baiting of the Democrat party, they hand the nomination to Joe Biden, an old white guy, [5:25] and then the old white guy taps a younger old white guy to be the next nominee. Exactly. [5:31] All right. Speaking of old white guys, do you need a tissue, Greg? [5:35] You know, I've been doing this show for 15 years and I have hay fever. And this is the first time [5:39] it's ever happened on a show. It's so bad right now. It's unbelievable. [5:45] I'm not going to even try to comment on this topic, except to say that why does Kamala's [5:52] thing no longer work on people? I find that interesting. She's like that guy at the Port [5:57] Authority bus station who makes like, who used to make a lot of money telling everybody that he just [6:03] got mugged and he has to get to a job interview and he just needs $35 for a bus ticket. And it worked. [6:08] It worked like every day. But then after a while, people just stopped, started like, [6:14] I see this guy, he gets mugged a lot. So it all wears off. It all wears off. People, [6:19] other people are using the same story. So it's kind of like this Obama babble. [6:24] And it was pretty rich for a while. People could get away with it. But it's like, [6:28] it's like a magic trick that only works on infants and people with head injuries. Everybody else is [6:33] like, oh, what the hell's going on? Again, she reminds me of the drunk lady at the hotel bar. [6:37] Doesn't matter who's in front of her. She'll just say the same old crap. The bartender's already [6:42] moved to the other side of the bar, polishing a clean glass. Lemon, however, loves this because for [6:48] once he's the smart guy in the room. He's like, I can't believe this. I'm actually a scholar compared [6:55] to her. And she's like, it's also kind of like, imagine having, this is like office hours with a [7:01] drunk professor. Come after class, she just forces you to sit there and she just gets loaded and [7:07] tells you garbage. Yeah, they're running a guy who can't read and a woman who can't talk.
