[0:02] So back with the latest in the Middle East, the United States conducting a fresh round of strikes against Iran in an attempt to counter Tehran's aggression in the Strait of Hormuz.
[0:11] Let's go live to Tel Aviv where Mike Tobin has the details. Good morning, Mike.
[0:16] Good morning, Lawrence. The latest in the back and forth with struggle for control over the Strait of Hormuz has Iran once again firing on its neighbors.
[0:23] Jordan, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait all took fire.
[0:27] The Kuwait is saying that border crossings, even an oil rig were hit out there.
[0:30] There's been a lot of social media traffic suggesting that U.S. service members were injured in Kuwait.
[0:35] Those reports are not true. But this follows another round of U.S. strikes inside of Iran.
[0:41] There may be some fresh reporting today about news strikes.
[0:45] The U.S. says everything from missile launching sites to maritime locations that Iran was using to meta shipping in the Straits were hit.
[0:51] Dozens of targets were hit by land-based and sea-based fighter jets. Guided missiles were fired from ships in the area.
[0:56] This latest round of airstrikes came after Iran fired on a Cyprus flag cargo ship crossing the Strait.
[1:02] It was traveling outside of the route designated by Iran and following the route encouraged by the U.S.
[1:07] One sailor is now missing and the ship was disabled.
[1:10] President Trump says Iran triggered this round of violence.
[1:13] They agreed to a deal yesterday, a perfect deal for us. No nuclear, no this, no that, no nothing.
[1:20] They gave up everything. And then after that, they left the room.
[1:24] And then within an hour, they launched a drone and a ship.
[1:30] As far as the plot to assassinate President Trump as relayed by Israeli intelligence, the U.S. Secret Service issued a statement.
[1:38] While we do not confirm or comment on intelligence matters, we consume information on a global level to effectively execute our protective operations.
[1:48] This is pretty serious. You know, you can't just make these kind of claims.
[1:54] I think it's important for Americans to understand that what the Iranians are saying and doing is nothing that they haven't been doing for 47 years.
[2:04] Meantime, some 20 vessels, upwards of 20 vessels, crossed the strait yesterday.
[2:09] That's about half the volume before this latest round of strikes.
[2:13] Oil is now up 3.5% a barrel to $79 a barrel.
[2:18] And that's about 8% higher than it was before this latest round in the conflict.
[2:23] Lawrence, back to you.
[2:24] Roger that. Thanks so much, Mike.
[2:27] United against nuclear, Iran's CEO and former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Mark Wallace joins us now.
[2:34] Mr. Ambassador, thanks so much for joining the program.
[2:36] I want to talk about the strait before we get to the strait, though.
[2:39] There is some reporting that when you look at Fordow, Natanz, or Esfjan, there has been no movement there.
[2:46] But it does look like some of the surveillance imaging is showing that they're trying to reconstitute Pixax Mountain.
[2:55] What do you make of that?
[2:57] Well, first of all, thank you for having me on.
[3:00] I appreciate it.
[3:01] And it was listening to Mike's great report.
[3:02] Obviously, he really covered it comprehensively.
[3:05] Look, we have really good eyes on these nuclear sites.
[3:09] And I'm confident, given the eyes that we have on it, and whenever you see commercial satellite reporting or news reporting or satellite data on these nuclear sites,
[3:19] I am quite confident that our military and our intelligence services have truly quite good eyes on these locations.
[3:27] And, look, moving surface debris around is one thing.
[3:30] Truly trying to dig out this material and reconstituting nuclear program, we will know it.
[3:35] But it is worrisome because clearly Iran is not ready to rejoin the community of nations as so many of our friends have hooked in the past.
[3:43] And I think it's quite suspect that they ever will want to do that.
[3:47] And this kind of conduct is designed to be provocative and get us talking about it.
[3:52] Yeah, the president makes the argument that they don't even have the tools to be able to dig out that nuclear dust.
[3:59] But they're still attempting to do it.
[4:02] I want to move on over to the straight because that seems to be their one tool.
[4:06] At what point should the president weigh the options?
[4:09] Because we have plans put in place to do that to secure the strait.
[4:14] Are we reaching that moment that the president may implement that plan?
[4:19] So we take that off the table, those cards?
[4:23] Look, for the last 47 years, Iran has been desperate to confront the West
[4:27] and use the leverage of terrorism, its proxies across the region,
[4:33] its nuclear program, which was its ultimate leverage.
[4:36] And now most of that leverage has been eviscerated, obliterated, it's gone.
[4:42] And the last gasp of this leverage that they hope to have,
[4:45] even as oil prices and China's oil consumption,
[4:48] as oil producers around the strait are redirecting,
[4:53] the control of the strait and Firmouz and the effort to try to control that
[4:57] is their desperate effort to regain or try to assert regional hegemony,
[5:02] control in the region.
[5:03] And I think that as long as this regime is in power,
[5:07] they're going to try to exert whatever leverage they can.
[5:10] And the straitful moves is really their last gasp
[5:13] because their other tools are gone.
[5:15] Such a good point.
[5:18] Before I let you go, it would be foolish of me
[5:22] if I didn't get you to respond to the tragic passion,
[5:26] passing of the late Senator Graham.
[5:29] I know you had a relationship with him.
[5:32] He was a foreign policy hawk, but one at the safety of America at its core.
[5:37] What's your reaction to his passing?
[5:40] Well, first of all, thanks for asking that question.
[5:42] Because Senator Graham was part of the three amigos.
[5:45] We were close to many government officials in our own country and others.
[5:49] And Senator Graham was a great friend of ours and our former colleague Joe Lieberman who passed
[5:54] some time ago now as well.
[5:56] I think really the point to remember Lindsay,
[5:59] a group of us were circulating a picture last night
[6:02] that our great friend Ileana Ross-Leighton,
[6:05] the former chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sent to me.
[6:08] And it was a picture of Lindsay in New Hampshire
[6:10] with Jeb Bush, John McCain, Ileana, and others.
[6:15] And Lindsay was just beaming with his smile.
[6:18] There was a joy to Lindsay's politics, his policy,
[6:22] the things that he cared about.
[6:24] He loved doing this stuff.
[6:26] He loved confronting the challenges of the United States
[6:28] and he loved working with other members, regardless of party.
[6:33] And I think Lindsay's, the thing that will be missed most about Lindsay
[6:37] was his knowledge, expertise, but also the joy that he had
[6:40] in working on these issues.
[6:42] And I think the sense of privilege that he had in working on them
[6:45] and just the joy that he had in working with everyone on Capitol Hill
[6:49] and across the aisle.
[6:51] We're seeing less and less of that in politics today.
[6:53] And with the last of the three amigos gone,
[6:56] it's a real sad day for America.
[6:59] It really is.
[7:00] The man loved being a senator.
[7:02] Thank you so much, sir.
[7:03] He did.
[7:03] I appreciate you, Ambassador.
[7:06] Thank you.
[7:06] Thank you.
