[0:02] Good early morning to you. I'm Joe Fryer and I'm Savannah Sellers. We are following breaking news
[0:07] in China where President Trump is about to wrap up day one of his official state visit. Soon,
[0:12] Mr. Trump is expected to address the U.S. and Chinese delegations at the state banquet in
[0:17] Beijing. Earlier today, that two-day summit kicked off with the usual pomp and circumstance,
[0:22] a welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People. And U.S. and Chinese officials went
[0:27] behind closed doors for their high-stakes meeting. They discussed a number of big topics,
[0:32] including a potential trade truce and the war with Iran. President Trump and Chinese President Xi
[0:38] Jinping met for just over two hours today. Xi said the two countries, quote, should be partners,
[0:44] not rivals. The U.S. brought along more than a dozen CEOs of major tech and financial companies,
[0:50] some you can see in this room right now, signaling this two-day summit will focus on business,
[0:54] Taiwan, and the war with Iran are also expected to be big topics of discussion.
[1:00] Well, President Trump is about to speak at the official state banquet. They've just
[1:04] arrived in the room there. Again, some of those executives are there in the room,
[1:09] and we're going to listen in in just a moment. But we're going to now bring in NBC News
[1:12] international correspondent Janice Mackey-Frayer from Beijing.
[1:15] Janice, walk us through what we can expect to see here during what has been dubbed the welcoming
[1:19] banquet. Well, this is the punctuation on the first day of this historic
[1:27] summit for these two leaders. Both sides saying that the talks went well, that they addressed
[1:32] a number of issues, including trade, but also touched on Taiwan. That seemed to be the one
[1:39] topic that was a bit touchy, according to both sides, with China issuing a veiled warning
[1:46] about the need to have stability around Taiwan, saying, quote, clashes and even conflicts could put the
[1:55] entire relationship in jeopardy. But beyond that, there has been a lot of friendship today, signs that
[2:04] the two men are furthering their personal relationship, and the expectation that there could be some
[2:12] agreements that come out of this visit, primarily in trying to boost what China buys from the United
[2:21] States. President Trump wants to sell more beef, more aircraft. There's China's President Xi Jinping
[2:28] stepping up to the lectern. He, in this, wants to prioritize stability in relations with the United
[2:37] States. For him, the one objective, the one goal, is to try to manage tensions over the longer term with
[2:47] the United States so that China's economy can get some traction. The tariffs that the U.S. announced last
[2:54] year made China nervous. At one point, those tariffs up in the triple digits. So what we've seen is both
[3:02] sides try to step back from that edge to try to come to a more stable place. Let's listen in to what
[3:11] they're saying at the banquet.
[3:13] I'd like to extend a warm welcome to President Trump and the U.S. delegation.
[4:00] And out here, we are listening to President Xi give his remarks ahead of President Trump right now. We are hearing him speak in Chinese. He'll say several sentences, and then we will get the English translation of that. Let's listen in.
[4:12] 美国再伟大,完全可以并行不备,相互成就,造福世界。
[4:21] This is a historic visit. This year marks the start of China's 15th five-year plan for economic and social development.
[4:32] The over 1.4 billion people of China, drawing on the rich heritage of our over 5,000-year civilization, are advancing Chinese modernization on all fronts through high-quality development.
[4:47] This year is also the 250th anniversary of American independence. The over 300 million American people are reinvigorating the spirit of patriotism, innovation and enterprise, and ushering in a new journey for the development of the United States.
[5:08] The people of China and the United States are both great peoples. Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand. We can help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world.
[6:21] Fifty-five years ago,
[6:24] President Richard Nixon sent Dr. Henry Kissinger to visit China,
[6:30] and ping-pong diplomacy was carried out between our two countries.
[6:34] Through efforts of the two governments and peoples,
[6:37] the door that had remained frozen for over twenty years was opened,
[6:43] marking a milestone in contemporary international relations.
[6:47] From then on,
[6:49] China and the United States have written many chapters of friendship
[6:53] through mutual openness and cooperation.
[6:57] Under the new situation,
[6:59] President Trump and I,
[7:00] fully aware of the expectations of our two nations
[7:04] and the international community,
[7:06] have had multiple meetings and phone calls,
[7:09] and kept China-U.S. relations generally stable.
[7:13] Mr. Huijstream.
[7:20] Mr. Huij pumped north,
[7:21] Mr. Huijallo in the United States.
[7:23] Mr. Huij architect,
[7:24] Mr. Huij architect,
[7:25] Mr. Huijdec,
[7:26] Mr. Huij architect,
[7:27] Mr. Huij architect,
[7:31] Mr. Huij architect,
[7:32] Today, President Trump and I had in-depth exchanges on China-US relations
[8:08] and international and regional dynamics.
[8:11] We both believe that the China-US relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world.
[8:18] We must make it work and never mess it up.
[8:23] Both China and the United States stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation.
[8:30] Our two countries should be partners rather than rivals.
[8:35] President Trump and I also agreed to build a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability
[8:42] to promote the steady, sound and sustainable development of China-US relations
[8:49] and bring more peace, prosperity and progress to the world.
[8:54] Thank you, President Trump.
[9:28] Honorable President Donald J. Trump, ladies and gentlemen, friends, looking back at the
[9:55] cause of China-US relations, whether or not we could have mutual respect, peaceful coexistence,
[10:02] and win-win cooperation is the key to whether the relationship can advance steadily.
[10:09] The world today is changing and turbulent.
[10:13] China-US relations concern the well-being of the over 1.7 billion people of both countries
[10:20] and affect the interests of the over 8 billion people of the world.
[10:26] Both sides should rise up to this historic responsibility and steer the giant ship of
[10:32] China-US relations forward, steadily, and in the right direction.
[10:40] Now please join me in a toast to the development and prosperity of China and the United States,
[10:48] and the well-being of our people, to the bright future of China-US relations and the friendship
[10:58] between the two peoples, and to the health of President Trump and all the friends present.
[11:06] Cheers.
[11:08] Canbei.
[11:09] Cheers.
[11:10] Canbei.
[11:11] I'm listening to Chinese President Xi Jinping make remarks in front of this group of dignitaries
[11:17] and business leaders in Beijing following this bilateral meeting between the Chinese President
[11:29] and President Trump.
[11:30] We're now expecting to hear from President Trump any moment.
[11:32] The Chinese President, though, here saying that the two of them have kept U.S.-China relations
[11:36] generally stable, and then continue to push for more stability going forward that he said would
[11:38] cause peace, prosperity, and progress, and be the most important relationship in the world.
[11:44] Let's bring back Janice McEyferry, who's been listening with us.
[12:00] Janice, what stuck out to you from those remarks quickly before we hear from President Trump
[12:04] in a moment?
[12:07] What struck me about President Xi's speech is that a lot of the language that he uses
[12:12] to describe Chinese aspirations, he's now ascribing to American aspirations as well.
[12:20] This idea of Chinese rejuvenation and making America great again in order to appeal to his
[12:27] guest.
[12:28] Let's listen in to President Trump.
[12:30] I want to thank President Xi, my friend, for this magnificent welcome.
[12:35] And it really was a magnificent welcome like none other.
[12:39] And for so graciously hosting us on this very historic state visit.
[12:45] We had extremely positive and productive conversations and meetings today with the Chinese delegation
[12:53] earlier.
[12:54] And this evening is another cherished opportunity to discuss, among friends, some of the things
[13:00] that we discussed today, all good for the United States and for China.
[13:06] And it was a great honor to be with you.
[13:08] Please.
[13:09] Please.
[13:15] Thank you, Mr. President.
[13:17] Today, we have had a beautiful day.
[13:21] First, I want to thank Mr. President's great welcome.
[13:25] And I also want to thank the history of the international conversation.
[13:29] I am very proud to be here with my members.
[13:32] Today, it is a time to talk with the Chinese.
[13:37] And we have a conversation with the Chinese.
[13:39] This evening will be another chance to talk with the Chinese.
[13:45] Today, we have discussed some issues.
[13:48] And we have discussed some issues.
[13:49] And we have discussed some issues.
[13:50] And how we can create a better future future.
[13:57] The relationship between the American and Chinese people goes all the way back to America's founding.
[14:03] The first American Council to China, Samuel Shaw, arrived on the first American trading ship to reach these shores.
[14:13] In 1784, the Chinese merchants had a name for the Americans.
[14:19] They called their visions the new people.
[14:22] Two and a half centuries later, that first connection has grown into one of the most consequential relationships in world history.
[14:31] The order of the U.S.
[14:33] The American and Chinese people, the U.S.
[14:34] The U.S.
[14:35] The U.S.
[14:36] The U.S.
[14:37] The U.S.
[14:39] In 1784 when the U.S.
[14:40] The U.S.
[14:42] That is, Samuel E.肖先生, in 1784,
[17:32] Provided the funds to establish President Xi's alma mater, Jinghua University.
[18:03] As allies in World War II, President Frankenstein,
[18:35] Franklin Roosevelt's mentions of the brave people of China,
[18:40] that's what they were, grew loud cheers in his speeches in the United States,
[18:44] and everybody loved what he had to say,
[18:47] just as many Chinese now love basketball and blue jeans,
[18:51] Chinese restaurants in America today,
[18:54] outnumber the five largest fast food chains in the United States,
[18:58] all combined, that's a pretty big statement.
[19:01] So, as a war in the second war,
[19:04] the President of the United States of the United States,
[19:06] in the many talks of Chinese people in the United States,
[19:09] mentioned the brave people of China.
[19:12] As a while, a lot of Chinese people love basketball and wearing blue jeans.
[19:19] The number of the number of Chinese restaurants in the United States
[19:22] weight loss of their product base
[19:26] This bond of commerce and respect that stretches back to 250 years is the foundation
[19:35] for a future that benefits both of our nations. the American and Chinese people share much
[19:43] in common, we value hard work, we value courage and achievement. we love our families,
[19:48] and we love our countries. together we have the chance to draw on these values to
[19:53] to create a future of greater prosperity cooperation and happiness and peace for our children.
[20:01] We love our children.
[20:03] This region and the world is a special world with the two of us, united and together.
[20:09] So, in terms of the trade-in-law and our mutual respect to 250 years,
[20:16] we are going to build the future of the future.
[20:19] So, in terms of the future, it will be gathered to our two countries.
[20:23] The American people and the Chinese people have many共同 points.
[20:26] We all adore the labor, we all adore the courage and achievement.
[20:31] We all love our families, we also love our country.
[20:36] We will have the opportunity to create a more prosperous,
[20:43] a future of cooperation, happiness and peace for our children,
[20:49] for our children, for this region and the world.
[20:54] Thank you again, President Xi, for this beautiful welcome, and tonight it is my honor to extend
[21:00] an invitation to you and Madam Peng to visit us at the White House this September 24th.
[21:09] And we look forward to it.
[21:11] And I'd now like to raise a glass and propose a toast to the rich and enduring ties between
[21:17] the American and Chinese people.
[21:20] It's a very special relationship.
[21:22] And I want to thank you again.
[21:23] This has been an amazing period of time.
[21:25] Thank you, President Xi.
[21:30] Right, as America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, President Trump referencing the past
[21:36] in America's history, talking about U.S.-China relations over the years, also talking about the present,
[21:42] saying that today's talks between the two countries extremely positive and productive,
[21:47] and referencing the future with an invitation to China's president to visit the White House in September.
[21:53] Let's bring in NBC's Janice Mackey-Frayer to talk more about these comments we heard during the welcoming banquet.
[21:58] The president's speaking for just under 10 minutes here, including the translation, largely staying on script.
[22:03] We don't expect controversial comments at a banquet like this.
[22:07] Janice, walk us through what we've heard over the last several minutes.
[22:10] Anything stand out?
[22:11] What seems to stand out is that both men are being very gracious to each other.
[22:19] Um, President Trump has talked often about his friendship with Xi Jinping.
[22:24] He considers him a gentleman and a good host and a great leader, as he said today.
[22:30] And there is the sense that the feeling is mutual, that there is something in the way that Xi Jinping
[22:36] conducts himself with Donald Trump that seems different from other leaders.
[22:42] But he's not looking primarily for friendship out of this summit and out of this visit.
[22:48] China is seeing this as an opportunity to try to manage this important relationship for the longer term,
[22:55] uh, to try to shore up the economy here, uh, to dial down the temperature, especially when it comes to, uh, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods.
[23:05] Uh, so it's not that we're going to see any grand bargain or, or reset come out of this.
[23:12] But what this does signal is that, uh, on this first day of the summit, they have been able to start conversations.
[23:19] And these are conversations that are going to continue, uh, President Trump saying that, uh, September 24th is the date
[23:27] that he would like to host presidency at the White House.
[23:31] So there is the sense that these two men are taking a breath together, if, if we can say that,
[23:37] and, and really wanting to move the relationship forward because they see the benefit on both sides.
[23:44] Notable to me, Janice, that, um, we had President Xi calling this the most important bilateral relationship in the world,
[23:51] and President Trump calling it one of the most consequential relationships in world history.
[23:55] Um, to your point, really sort of just in agreement and, and both showing this graciousness to each other.
[24:00] Janice, walk us through, though, what came out of these readouts,
[24:03] because there was a little bit of disparity between, um, the focus that China put on their readout from this meeting on Taiwan.
[24:09] It was entirely missing from the U.S.'s readout of that meeting between the two.
[24:13] And then what we did here on the war with Iran and trade, sort of the three big topics heading into this.
[24:19] Well, the U.S. side felt that the talks went well today.
[24:24] They described them as good, uh, they touched on trade issues, uh, uh, fentanyl and, and technology,
[24:31] some of the other issues, uh, that they've been wanting to address.
[24:34] There are still some very big elephants in the room, so to speak, with, uh, critical minerals and rare earths.
[24:41] China has, uh, slapped export controls on certain things that America needs for its supply chains.
[24:48] Uh, and there is also this issue of Taiwan. Uh, there was the expectation that Taiwan was going to factor
[24:55] into the discussion in ways that it hasn't before. Um, the Chinese side has certainly been telegraphing it
[25:02] over the past few weeks. China is, uh, was wanting to urge or discuss U.S. arms deals, uh, with Taiwan,
[25:11] with President Trump. Um, they want to perhaps pressure him, urge him to, uh, delay these arms sales,
[25:20] or even scale them back. We have to understand, though, that to even have this discussion between a U.S.
[25:27] president and a Chinese leader is unprecedented. And, and that's what was making some people nervous, uh,
[25:33] going into this meeting, that perhaps President Trump, when he was face to face with Xi Jinping,
[25:39] uh, was maybe going to agree to things that he necessarily, um, should not. That could change policy,
[25:46] longstanding U.S. policy. There's been no indication, uh, that it went that far today,
[25:51] but there is the sense that, uh, Xi Jinping wanted to have his say on Taiwan. And he issued
[25:58] what many consider to be a warning, uh, the sense that I want to get the language correct here. Uh,
[26:04] the sense that he was saying that clashes and even conflicts, uh, could put the entire relationship
[26:10] in great jeopardy. Um, and as you mentioned, Savannah, that was something that was missing
[26:17] from the American readout. The Iran war also was expected to be, um, discussed today with China
[26:25] seen as having leverage with Iran as, uh, an oil client and, of course, with vast economic interests
[26:32] in the Middle East. Um, there, there was the sense, though, that President Xi didn't want Iran to
[26:38] dominate the agenda. Um, he wanted this to be an opportunity to talk to, uh, the U.S. President
[26:44] about China, um, not Iran. And as well, that there might be some hesitation on President Trump's part
[26:52] to appear as though he was coming to his chief competitor and asking for help to end a conflict.
[26:59] As well, Xi Jinping wouldn't want to be seen as aligning himself, uh, too much with Washington
[27:05] when it comes to Iran. So it seems these talks didn't get off to a good start today. They do
[27:11] continue into tomorrow. And there are also the, the CEOs who are here who are having their own
[27:17] meetings, uh, trying to not only drum up some deals, but importantly to get access and influence
[27:26] here in the Chinese market. Right. NBC's Janice Mackey-Frayer for now. They will eat. Day two kicks off
[27:31] tomorrow. Thanks for joining us in our breaking news coverage of one of President Trump's,
