"good Monday morning to you New Mexico I'm not on screen yet Adrian you're also not Adrian you're in we're off to a banging start here on the Fox 505 it's Monday just so you know I'm Chad Bromid it's 7:00 a.m. Monday right there I don't think I got a little excited it's Monday it's Monday we're..."

[00:00:00] Speaker 1: good Monday morning to you New Mexico I'm not on screen yet Adrian you're also not Adrian you're in we're off to a banging start here on the Fox 505 it's Monday just so you know I'm Chad Bromid it's 7:00 a.m. Monday right there I don't think I got a little excited it's Monday it's Monday we're [00:00:35] Speaker 2: getting things rolling good morning guys morning I'm Adrian Chavez I'm the producer and I am Aiden Garcia I am the director and we are your a team back here that's right Oliver so you grew up on [00:00:47] Speaker 1: the Westside Aiden Westside so you probably have driven by this so in the morning when I'm like messing around on this looking at our traffic maps I'm looking at Google Maps looking at our SIG alerts which is kind of the mainframe of how we look at our traffic looking into Mexico roads you know in them roads dot com or org or gov or whatever the the extension is but you know we're looking to try and make sure that we got all the accurate information if there's construction if there's crashes trying to verify it so looking around this morning and I never knew this you know that that red dinosaur that's right on Paseo and Coors is you're getting on to yeah there's an iron fence in [00:01:28] Speaker 2: front of it yeah on the other side you got target and whatnot exactly did you know that that dinosaur [00:01:33] Speaker 1: has a name I do not know he I didn't know it had a name until just now it is Clifford the big red [00:01:38] Speaker 3: dinosaur at least according to Google I feel like that's infringement well it could be yeah or maybe [00:01:44] Speaker 4: they go by Cliff you know I'm missing out I used to drive past that area oh you haven't seen [00:01:49] Speaker 1: no well maybe I have to focus on the road it's it's all there it is he's being a better driver than we are I'm over here like oh oh yeah no but as Aiden was saying yeah it's if you are um is as you're turning on from Paseo and Coors it's on the right hand side of the road and it is it's kind of busy because it's it's where you're merging onto Paseo from Coors so especially right where you yield that yeah it gets very busy so next time you're yielding and you're kind of waiting for the traffic look over to your east you'll see the big red it's like a bronze you find that out it's on Google it's you know so it'll have you know Google has like different things it'll show you what's in the area and it's got a you know and he's got a like a location as a traffic marker like traffic is backed up by Clifford so next time that there is an incident there I'm gonna be saying it is by Clifford that's right near Clifford the big red dinosaur I also just very quickly want to give a special thanks and shout out to everyone that came out yesterday for the screening of my documentary Silence in the Sand it's on YouTube now so you can watch it get it out there it is an advocacy documentary for missing and murdered indigenous women highlighting the case of Rennell Rose Bennett that is still going on people are still her family is still looking for her and her family came down from Farmington a huge family came down and was just so grateful to share space and time with them and I know you were there [00:03:16] Speaker 4: for it too I'm glad I was able to catch it you know it was a long day Sunday but I was like I had to go out and catch the film and I'm so glad that I did for those for fellow journalists out there or young people in New Mexico like who are wannabe journalists I think this is a great film and it has a great message of like the power we have as people in the media yeah and so and really just overall I mean [00:03:41] Speaker 1: that's the thing is with social media that that power is continuing to to sort of be democratized in so many different ways and yeah it's just we can be doing better to as much it is a great message to [00:03:54] Speaker 4: like journalists it's also such a sad story about the troubles and tribulations that one family has gone [00:04:01] Speaker 1: through that just tried to get some answers for the for their loved ones yeah yeah and it you know it continues again you know Ronnell's case is just one of of hundreds around the country and around North America because it's not just we talked about it and I think the 330 post show that it's not just a problem in New Mexico it's not a it's not a Southwest it's not even just a US problem it is in in many ways all over the world even some of the research that I've done Australia and the Aboriginal uh um missing persons cases that too is a problem so um anyway just a huge thank you to everyone that came out a huge thank you to Keith uh Henley at the guild uh for hosting it the guild is such a treasure for independent cinema uh in New Mexico and they've got some really cool stuff coming up they've got a documentary about cats and caught her oh god this woman who was rescuing cats and caught her that one was [00:04:54] Speaker 4: honestly breaking my heart yeah I don't know if I could watch it because I know that I I need a box of [00:05:00] Speaker 1: Kleenex yes my wife and her friend Danny I think are gonna go back to watch it because they they're both cat lovers um they're both cat moms and um Abby was like yeah definitely going back to this uh anyway we got a lot to get to on this Monday morning guys uh thank you for joining us we're gonna start things off with a first look at your weather meteorologist Ryan Phillips is standing by in the weather center good [00:05:21] Speaker 5: morning Ryan and good morning we'll be watching out for some thunderstorm development in some areas today mostly dry and mostly very warm elsewhere looking right now at Albuquerque we do notice the high thin cloud deck out there so a beautiful start I'm just gonna step off real quick I just want to show you guys okay there we go we're good yeah I just wanted to check one the cameras we're about to show so Albuquerque some high thin clouds present and those wavy clouds symbolizing some upper level moisture and some strong winds aloft now looking at Farmington we're dealing with some high thin clouds as well your air temperature well oh Angel Fire is 50 degrees 48 percent humidity so we are dealing with some high thin clouds out there again this is not Angel Fire of course this is Farmington Angel Fire we're sitting at 50 degrees right now and I meant to show uh Farmington we're gonna be dealing with some high humidity gusty and southeast New Mexico spreading northwestward in the coming days with some storms and places like Hobbs all the way to southeast New Mexico dealing with a little bit of moisture at the surface and in the Rio Grande Valley to south and northern areas mostly dry out there later throughout the morning in the afternoon we're gonna be watching out for some gusty winds near Albuquerque 15 to 25 mile per hour wind gusts will be warming up eventually reaching the high 80s and low to mid 90s in the next couple of days up track of the timing impacts of the storms and where and when they're more likely to form back to you Chad [00:06:51] Speaker 1: all right thank you Ryan taking a look at our traffic maps we do have one incident it doesn't look like it's causing any issues right at the moment uh it is on southbound 25 frontage road as you are approaching mountain it is showing that there is a crash there but as I said right now does not like it's look like it's causing any problems the interstates are looking pretty good traffic moving relatively smoothly right now as we take a look at the big eye cam not a lot of cars on the road but the things that are there are moving along uh nice and smooth let's hope that it stays that way on this Monday morning good morning Stephanie good morning see okay what is that two for two two days for two maybe [00:07:31] Speaker 6: three three three three three I did forget the gold oh wow the miracle okay I was looking actually completely forgot that we had talked to gold stars thanks Adrian for throwing me under the bus this early on a Monday morning appreciate that [00:07:52] Speaker 1: well you know we started we started the show off with you know supers coming at us left and right me [00:07:58] Speaker 6: calling Aiden Adrian it's a whole thing their names are a little too close for comfort if you ask [00:08:05] Speaker 2: sometimes I call myself Aiden I look in the mirror and I see Adrian sometimes well that's I don't know that you know how mirrors work [00:08:16] Speaker 1: are you sure it's a window or a mirror maybe it's maybe he's outside my house maybe [00:08:20] Speaker 4: maybe I do know where he lives now I had to drop him off he did actually I really appreciate that's what it [00:08:25] Speaker 1: is actually did see exactly he'll come for me exactly all right let's get into uh the feed see what is buzzing uh and this one I know has gotten a lot of uh attention over the weekend drivers may be feeling pain at the pump we all know that from the rising gas prices across the U.S. but here in New Mexico we are [00:08:44] Speaker 6: cashing in the state is right oil and gas production prices are drawing in millions more for the state but what do they plan to do with that money news 13's Bianca Hoops has the story country and in New Mexico [00:08:56] Speaker 7: because of the war in Iran but since New Mexico is the second largest oil and gas producer in the country millions of dollars in revenue are projected to boost the economy so we're estimating about 850 [00:09:10] Speaker 8: million dollars more coming into the state of New Mexico this fiscal year as a result of the war [00:09:15] Speaker 7: chief economist Ismael Torres shared with lawmakers the financial outlook for gas and oil production revenues a major concern early in the year was that state spending was outpacing revenue growth but now [00:09:31] Speaker 8: there's a shift are we going to have enough cash in the checking account to keep paying our bills and cover executive order spending and appropriations made during the session so we were facing a tight constrained budget environment and then things have changed pretty dramatically now with an expected [00:09:48] Speaker 7: surplus Torres says the state was receiving 58 dollars per barrel of oil to now 73 dollars a barrel produced in the state as a result the state will gain 850 million dollars in revenue that would go to the Medicaid trust fund behavioral health trust fund and early childhood trust fund which pays for the new universal child care program but the financial impact on drivers is straining but we know this is a huge drag on consumers a huge impact in New Mexico households Torres says the average household pays 750 dollars more low-income families for every month to cover the extra costs for groceries and gas with one lawmaker saying it's especially hurting low-income families I hope we hold the purpose of those funds very close to heart and [00:10:44] Speaker 9: make sure that when we raise money when when money comes to our coffers like that that that we spend it and spend it well [00:10:51] Speaker 7: Chief Economist Ismael Torres also warns that if prices continue to go up there's more of a likelihood of a recession he says the state's reserves could hold up for up to two years during an economic downturn back to you [00:11:06] Speaker 1: And that was Bianca Hoops reporting now the LFC says a 10 cent change in the annual average price of natural gas has a nearly 28 million dollar impact in New Mexico so a lot of people commenting on this this morning Adrian what are [00:11:21] Speaker 4: folks saying a lot of people want a piece of the pie Catherine Margaret says I think NM born residents should get a piece of the pie like they do in Alaska mm-hmm sorry Chanel no says can we fill some of the potholes with that that please Mike Mirabal says instead of spending it or giving it away to targeted groups why not use the burden on the taxpayers in New Mexico [00:11:50] Speaker 1: yeah I mean it you know it's it's a difficult situation because in in where we sit right now the four of us having to put gas in our car every day we're like we'd really like some relief we'd really like some help on this but it's not you know obviously as simple as like oh there's this windfall of 800 plus million dollars from it checks for everyone it would be wonderful if it's that easy but [00:12:14] Speaker 6: in reality it's just not right um and I as as it was mentioned at the beginning of that story there was a point when they were looking at a potential deficit and so they are trying to kind of [00:12:29] Speaker 1: bridge that gap yeah and and still trying to figure out you know how how funding works with universal health care obviously this is a big program that you know and even both sides of the aisle on the gubernatorial race um you know they they they both seem to support the the idea of universal health care and they want to see it done they may have different avenues with which to get there and things that sort of thresholds that they need to meet but knowing that there are a number of programs that that the state wants to get moving in that question of yeah how are we gonna you know pay the rent as uh as as you heard there in the package um that's a that's a legitimate question but I can understand from you know the taxpayer standpoints that you know can we get some help because we're we are spending [00:13:16] Speaker 6: so much on gas and groceries right now right and I mean that's that was what did I what was the first thing I said to you when that package rolled be nice if we all got a check do I know that that's logistically challenging sure do I know that it's probably unlikely going to happen yes but it would be nice [00:13:38] Speaker 4: I just know other states can do it like Alaska does do it for their residents so it's just like hey it [00:13:43] Speaker 1: can be done yeah and that's you know that's a legitimate question of okay well if other states you know Alaska obviously you know not part of the contiguous 48 but it is part of the united states so um if we can look at one state that's doing it well then maybe we should start taking some notes maybe take a trip up to uh Anchorage and have a conversation of of how things can work but it's it's understandable on both sides of the concern of how we're going to do it but also I think everyday new mexicans just really struggling with the the economy right now the cost of living and gas is gas is a part of it and it's a big part of it it's part of it yeah but you see the groceries yeah and all of that's possibly high too um and we're starting I mean things are also they're not easing up there you know reading just [00:14:33] Speaker 6: about this new scare of the the screw worm yes beef prices beef prices are already really high yeah I went to the grocery store a couple weeks ago and was looking at two pounds of ground beef for eighteen dollars and I was like holy moly wow not doing that yeah not today and I love spam so it's not a bad uh you know option but it is you see stuff like that and it [00:15:01] Speaker 1: is very disappointing yeah so all right well it is 7 15 guys we owe a commercial to our sponsors stay with us on the other side of these two minutes we are getting a sneak preview of one of the best treasures on the tracks here in new mexico returning for riders after its opening had to be pushed back we'll be right back welcome back folks after weeks of waiting one of new mexico's most iconic rides is finally back on [00:15:27] Speaker 6: track the cumbris and toltec scenic railroad reopens this weekend after severe drought and elevated fire risks pushed it back news 13's melissa torres takes us along for the ride the famous cumbris [00:15:39] Speaker 10: toltec train is back this season once again taking passengers through the spectacular scenery of the san juan mountains all the way to the conejos valley in colorado for a total of 64 picturesque miles you [00:15:56] Speaker 11: really get so many different kinds of of micro climates that we go through in terrain that you can be in high desert all the way up to the lush aspen trees and you're doing that within one day the train will [00:16:10] Speaker 10: resume operations this tuesday with a special grand opening ceremony after extreme weather conditions forced them to delay their official start in may i mean frankly we're always observing our conditions [00:16:23] Speaker 11: to make sure that we're running safely and we just felt that it was in our best interest and best issues of our our guests our team members in our communities that we postponed a bit to see how [00:16:31] Speaker 10: mother nature was going to align with us ceo eric mason says although it's a later start he emphasized the excitement building around welcoming new and returning passengers on this unmatched railroad adventure [00:16:44] Speaker 11: you're seeing really everything that that new mexico and colorado has to offer all while experiencing the authenticity authenticity of an 1880 locomotive on average they see more than [00:16:57] Speaker 10: 30 000 visitors but after being named usa today's best scenic train ride they're hoping to bring in a new [00:17:04] Speaker 11: crowd because there really isn't anything like it around the world so and that's what we want to make sure people know that this is something that's in your backyard uh you may not have experienced it but but we urge you to please come out and experience it it's sort of that ride of your life and writers can [00:17:22] Speaker 10: expect a special treat this week as the grand opening coincides with chama's western heritage days a community festival held featuring local music cuisine and traditional rodeo competitions melissa torres [00:17:36] Speaker 1: care qe news 13. all right so if you have ever needed an excuse to like throw on a duster throw on a cowboy hat you know get get into your wild west gear enjoy the trauma days up there this is the weekend coming up to do it to do the you know first of all trauma is absolutely gorgeous beautiful it is such a beautiful is it a village town i don't know what the official classification is community somewhere right yeah it is it's absolutely beautiful this was something my my dad was a huge fan of love durango love cumbris and toltec love northern new mexico um but being able to be on one of these old trains maybe it's because you know i back in in my movie days i worked on westerns and they were always the most fun because the wardrobe was the best you were on horses there's something about this that i'm like i gotta go on and get in a gonna go rob it costume no yeah so okay so here's here's something really this this is sort of an insight into um how my my wife and i interact um you know the little train that kind of looks like that that goes around coronado yeah they have the little ride that's i've never done the cumbris and toltec personally my my parents did a couple times i wasn't able to go um but i always think to myself it would be great to dress up in that gear go to coronado with like a horse you know like the stick horse and just ride up next to him and be like this here's a train [00:19:04] Speaker 4: robbery well you get you be on the lookout folks stick them up folks this here's a train [00:19:10] Speaker 6: give me your pretzel if you if you see anything like that going on at coronado mall you just know that it's chad brummett and your children are in fact safe they are in fact their pretzels might not [00:19:21] Speaker 1: be we may be coming for the pretzels and their their treats and stuff um preferably with cheese if you have it just just pretzels and mustard girl oh really that's a whole other conversation that adrian says we can't have right now because we got to go to break stay with us guys after this we'll have a full look at weather and traffic no pretzels and mustard though sorry very warm weather [00:19:44] Speaker 5: was the big story yesterday in farmington we reached the 80s with breezy conditions 23 mile per hour gusts 34 excuse me 23 mile per 16 went to 34 mile progress low humidity and what a beautiful sunset gotta love those golden colors 81 degrees around sunset overnight we saw those temperatures dropping with dark conditions around 60 or so to start earlier with a little bit of a breeze now we're at 62 27 humidity so while we have been around 62 in farmington i know i was showcasing uh the temperature in angel fire with the farmington webcam as an accident of course it started off earlier in angel fire 38 now we're already around 50 degrees 55 alamosa 51 we're warming up in places like duranga by the way elevated to critical fire threat conditions today in parts of the four corners because of very warm dry gusty conditions near 70 in albuquerque right now 70 in tucumcari 77 right now in clayton 74 in las cruces 55 santa bay 56 and grand 62 there in gallop and some reduction in visibility look at that hobs one mile visibility with a very humid air mass but to your west carlsbad and roswell 10 mile visibility some clouds moving on through from west to east in eastern new mexico the sangri de cristo mountains the four corners as well as the gila national forest elsewhere from albuquerque to the south very clear out there there are those red flag warnings from durango all the way through cortez chinley gap and grants from noon to nine o'clock and also from noon to around nine on tuesday and with the warmth also come the mostly clear skies now today i put a thunderstorm chance in albuquerque and for tomorrow as well but that's being generous it'll still be mostly sunny most of the day so very high to extreme amounts of uv radiation but wednesday with the sunshine you're gonna want to put on the sunscreen for sure if you're gonna be outside for a while that uv index will be around 12. that's an extreme amount of uv radiation in the forecast reaching the 90s in albuquerque today 80s alamosa durango and raton near triple digit territory in tucumcari deming at least above 1304 in carlsbad 80s in rudosso near 90 in santa fe but that upper level moisture plume will move from southwest to northeast overnight tonight into tomorrow yielding better thunderstorm chances even in parts of the rio grande valley southwest new mexico the northern areas in east new mexico along the central mountains when thunder roars go indoors tomorrow though still very warm because of low humidity at the surface reaching the mid 90s in albuquerque 80s in alamosa and rudosso instead of 100 for today in tucumcari will be upper 90s for tomorrow near 100 in carlsbad 103 the forecast high and dimming tracking those storms popping up in the sacramento capitan mountains today around lunchtime the gila national forest clipping the west side of albuquerque potentially the san mateo mountains the magdalena mountains and also the parts of the eastern highlands moving through northern areas and eventually even some wet snow activity in the san juan mountain peaks overnight tonight now anything in yellow i think will most likely reach the ground we're watching out for lightning induced wildfires today because a lot of those storms may not reach the ground tomorrow though it'll be cooler more humid of course compared to this afternoon and look at those storms migrating eastward you see this linear line as well as in the rio grande valley we're tracking the potential for severe weather in union county june 14th this 18th leaning cooler than average to the northeast warmer than average to the west and leaning wetter than average we're going to be watching out for more storms later this week but mostly dry very warm in the 90s ahead in albuquerque back to you chad [00:23:31] Speaker 1: all right thank you ryan taking a look at our traffic maps we are seeing a new incident this is eastbound i-40 between unser and coors not causing a lot of traffic jam as of yet but it is reporting an incident we are still looking at this crash also southbound i-25 frontage road this is at mountain again not causing too much of an issue it is causing on the frontage road as you get closer to lomas and mountain you will see a bit of a slowdown the interstates however looking pretty good we are starting to see accumulation at the big eyes we take a look at our big eye cam cars still moving pretty smoothly we're just seeing more of them on the road all right now time now is 7 28 guys after the break we are headed out to the park to see what the topes hosted over the weekend for some very special athletes stay with us and welcome back to the fox 505 feed this weekend the isotopes hosted their fifth annual adaptive baseball clinic over at the roadrunner little league giving people of all ages with physical or intellectual disabilities a chance to try their hands at baseball news 13's melissa torres was there [00:24:36] Speaker 12: and has more they are hidden balls right over here just like the isotopes do they get to be a part of the action just like everybody else and that's what it's all about for us today everyone got to try their [00:24:47] Speaker 10: hand at baseball getting hits stealing bases and even hearing the crowd roar with excitement this is our [00:24:55] Speaker 12: play ball adaptive clinic and major league baseball minor league baseball teams all over the country [00:25:01] Speaker 10: are doing an event this weekend for the last five years teams across the league including the isotopes have brought their own adaptive baseball clinics to the community creating a space for people who don't [00:25:13] Speaker 12: always get a chance to play during the season there's some clinics that include people in the disabled community but it's a very limited amount of space this this particular clinic is for all that entire [00:25:26] Speaker 10: community everyone is able to hone in on those baseball fundamentals with a variety of stations like base running throwing and wiffle batting yeah it's just one of my favorite events of the year to see [00:25:37] Speaker 13: all the smiles on the kids faces and see their enthusiasm uh for getting the chance to come out here interact with each other and play the game of baseball and where they're playing is not your average [00:25:48] Speaker 10: baseball field it's almost entirely made up of turf allowing everyone to play comfortably so uh the kids [00:25:56] Speaker 14: with the wheelchairs they can run it's all level and it's a great place to play on so we've been looking [00:26:02] Speaker 15: for activities like this for a while now um he just started to learn how to throw a ball and it's exciting for us because those are big accomplishments for him andrea tafoya's five-year-old son isaiah who's on the [00:26:18] Speaker 10: autism spectrum is taking home more than a baseball bat she says her son is building self-confidence and [00:26:25] Speaker 15: independence so coming out here and seeing him engage and throwing the ball is really exciting for us [00:26:32] Speaker 10: and after today she says she plans on coming back next year and encourages other parents to bring their [00:26:38] Speaker 1: kids too elisa torres care qe news 13. now each kid was able to go home with a bit a wiffle bat and ball [00:26:49] Speaker 4: i absolutely love that the topes do this no me too this is such a great way to get everyone involved and out and active and like being a part of you know like i just i think it's so great that they have this time to [00:27:04] Speaker 1: give these kids like one-on-one time and it also you know i mean again it helps develop uh a lot of the the athletic skills gives them the opportunity to potentially develop those skills that they wouldn't have in other in other areas um we did a story a few years ago on new mexico frontiers uh about an adaptive uh workout program that a company here uh in new mexico i believe it was called true fit i'm trying to remember off the top of my head it was like the first season of the show um but it was two brothers one based in new mexico one based in san diego and um the brother in san diego he will get his his clients out surfing gets them on boards and it is just amazing to see because it's you know the will is there the will is there you know there may be some physical challenges but man when when they get cooking they're they're just it's it's just wonderful and i love the fact that the topes do [00:27:56] Speaker 3: this outreach i love the socialization aspect of it too that's a great unity i love that because they're making friends they're making memories it's i just i love that aspect of that yes forrest was saying [00:28:08] Speaker 1: you know it's it's something that he looks forward to every year with very good reason all right guys it is 7 34 we got to get to break stay with us uh more local news weather and traffic on the other side of these two minutes good morning and welcome back to the fox 505 feed we have got a lot to get to in this next half hour of the show we're going to start things off with a first look at your weather meteorologist ryan de phillips is standing by in the krqe weather center good morning ryan and good [00:28:41] Speaker 5: morning out there we are dealing with some beautiful weather conditions here in the land of enchantment high thin clouds out there blue skies above as well so yeah we are dealing with some evergreen and deciduous trees kind of really light in the winds out there this morning and that what we saw last friday did create almost a little bit of a dusty scene before thunderstorms did form around the area and also was a little bit gusty saturday evening but it's mostly clear right now in a low temperature earlier right around 66 right now we're just below 70 at 69 at the sunport meanwhile look at these uniform temperatures rio rancho bernalillo corralis 68 66 in belen and los lunas out there so temperatures in the mid to upper 60s out there throughout the morning and the afternoon we'll be warming up into the high 80s and low 90s in albuquerque 80s in northern areas look at that tucumcari to carlsbad at least around if not above 100 degrees today deming will be close to 100. watch out for spotty thunderstorms though from gap and grants into the gila national forest as well as well as southeast new mexico we'll be tracking those storms those gusty winds in santa fe reaching near 90 degrees and i'll be tracking those storms and how they'll impact our viewing area in the next [00:30:03] Speaker 1: couple of days back to you chad all right thank you ryan taking a look at our traffic map southbound 25 starting to build up some accumulation as we see they're still dealing with this uh crash on eastbound i-40 this is between answer and cores fortunately it does not look like it's drawing too much of a of a slow down there but that is still working so just be advised on that as we take a look at the big i cam vehicles moving along pretty smoothly it has been a pretty decent clip all morning hopefully it stays that way as you are headed out to work or summer school the summer school even started yet are people [00:30:38] Speaker 6: doing summer school yet um i'm not sure to be honest summer school hopefully not summer camps [00:30:43] Speaker 1: hopefully hopefully you're going to the ground yeah there you go that's what we want to do all right let's get into our local headlines guys starting off with this state police issuing an amber alert for an abducted eight-year-old girl according to albuquerque police calliope godwin was taken from the casa sierra apartments near central and san pedro just after either of them you're asked to call apd's missing persons unit at 242 cops [00:31:29] Speaker 1: state officials are now discussing a possible increase in penalties for anyone trafficking fentanyl this comes after a spike in exposures impacting first responders detention officers and others now just weeks ago three people inside of a mountain air home died while more than 21st responders were exposed to what officials believe was a mixture of meth and several types of fentanyl new mexico's [00:31:52] Speaker 6: department of public safety says they've seen an uptick in cases involving powdered fentanyl it's a trend dps says has become more noticeable over the last six months they say the increase in exposure to cases exposure cases excuse me raises important policy considerations to determine if current penalties [00:32:08] Speaker 16: under state law are strong enough i mean it's it's sad enough when we have people that are dying from these overdoses but now when you're affecting our first responders that's a whole nother level [00:32:20] Speaker 1: dps is now emphasizing the importance of safety protocols and training for any first responders handling cases involving possible drug exposures like powdered fentanyl a moped driver has died after [00:32:32] Speaker 6: colliding with a car saturday evening police say the moped was traveling south on san pavlo street and entered the intersection of zuni road while the light was red a honda sedan traveling west on zuni then crashed into that moped police say the driver hit the brakes but couldn't avoid the crash now according to apd the moped driver was not wearing a helmet and had life-threatening injuries he later died at the [00:32:54] Speaker 1: hospital meanwhile an albuquerque man is accused of hitting and killing a motorcyclist on i-25 near comanche over the weekend mexico state police arrested and charged 58 year old danny sanchez with homicide by vehicle dwi and careless driving police say that when they arrived on scene around midnight on sunday they found an injured motorcyclist on the side of the highway who's now been identified as 24 year old keegan thomas now he was taken to the hospital where he later died police say sanchez was [00:33:24] Speaker 6: driving behind thomas when the crash happened and that he didn't pull over until he realized the car was inoperable police say alcohol is believed to be a factor 7 41 is the time that is going to do it for [00:33:34] Speaker 1: your headlines folks stay with us when we return we are hearing from the son of an iconic puppeteer who passed away in albuquerque last month and odds are you have seen his work for decades without even knowing it we'll be right back and welcome back to the fox 505 feed a legend and icon in puppeteering michael mccormick known for working on hit films like labyrinth and return of the jedi passed away in his albuquerque studio in late may news 13's natasha lynn sat down with his son to talk about his legacy [00:34:05] Speaker 17: not only in this community but worldwide michael mccormick a legendary puppeteer recently passed away at the age of 85. his son sean saying he knows his father is leaving a mark in the world of performance [00:34:20] Speaker 18: we knew we were working on something pretty special you know had no idea absolutely no idea until we started doing the comic cons that we had affected that he personally had affected so many people you know people are coming up to us with tears in their eyes you know there was one man that was standing there in front of the table he said did you ever think that the work you were doing would become so important to [00:34:48] Speaker 17: so many people that was like mccormick was best known for his puppeteer work in the labyrinth and return of the jedi but the punch and judy show is what kicked everything off starting at old town plaza continuing on to perform in london and ireland we'd always do the punch and judy show on the weekends [00:35:09] Speaker 18: even no matter how trashed we were from the week it was like energizing that never changes ever the same story same you know just it's punches destiny is that he has to repeat his mistakes for eternity sean [00:35:29] Speaker 17: says it was the process of the work his father enjoyed most seeing it through whether it was drawing a design on paper or sculpting it with clay this is where all the magic happened in his albuquerque studio michael mccormick created the puppets that would become the heart of the punch and judy show his son says his work made him proud not because of the recognition but because of the memories and smiles he created for others mccormick moved to new mexico when he was just five years old and worked out of his albuquerque studio since the 1980s sean joining him later from a young age himself he grew up going to movie theaters studying the films with his dad so moving from puppeteering at the plaza to film sets in london was a natural transition for them i owe my dad to to carry it on i just have to find a [00:36:21] Speaker 18: story to me that i can abuse the way he did me he's my best friend he taught me uh definitely the line between what's real and what's not you know natasha lynn krqe news 13. [00:36:38] Speaker 1: now michael's family is planning an open house in september at his studio welcome to those who knew him and to those who were inspired by his work i never knew that that the puppeteer that controlled jabba's [00:36:50] Speaker 4: little minion lived here in albuquerque right that it's always cool to see like a local connection to [00:36:56] Speaker 1: things that are so big yeah and man i i have lost count how many times i've watched jedi you know i absolutely have lost count and to know that that puppeteer was right here in the dude i actually feel [00:37:08] Speaker 4: bad because that puppet has like a name and like it is very well known amongst the fans the only thing [00:37:15] Speaker 1: that i can because he he's got like that that's pretty good that's you know yeah it i mean that's the fun thing about star wars is you can just make gibberish and they're like oh that must be a star wars character all right time now is 747 guys stay with us we will have a full look at weather and traffic on the other side of these two minutes on the fox 505 feed [00:37:38] Speaker 5: and we're dealing with some high dew point temperatures in southeast new mexico look at dew point at 70 degrees in hobs this morning that's the temperature we need for us to receive dew meanwhile the dew point is at 26 in grants at 28 in alamosa the air temperature is 70 in hobs right now 55 alamosa in it's dry out there 62 in farmington 72 at trc 77 clayton 53 right now in the reserve looking at santa fe out there mostly clear skies light winds 33 relative humidity and some high thin clouds occasionally rolling on through out there look at those rippling clouds along the east slopes of the sangra de christopher mountains in the cimarron range in the truscus range to the gila national forest into the san juan basin we're dealing with some high thin clouds moving on through as well and some high thin clouds as well as in southern new mexico but generally mostly clear here in albuquerque today reaching right around 93 degrees an isolated rain chance very warm and a bit gusty so despite the slight chance of rain at the surface very warm dry and gusty and those uh fire threat conditions will be more prevalent in the san juan basin today cortez durango and galp and farmington in the high 80s and 90s raton 80s center those at 90s carlsbad look at that 104 the forecast high mid 90s in places like albuquerque near 100 and tucumcari and deming near 90s santa fe 80s at least in grants that upper level moisture plume will then move on through though tonight into tomorrow that will yield more better rain chances and parts of the gila national forest even parts of the rio grande valley this is for tomorrow in the northern eastern highlands and eastern new mexico this is just the general outlook i'll be just showcasing the updated weather model that showcases the thunderstorm threat temperatures will be similar though tomorrow maybe a little bit cooler in albuquerque in east new mexico so instead of about 104 today about 101 tomorrow in carlsbad 103 though hotter in deming mid 90s in farmington near 90 in gallup for tomorrow so with the warmth a low humidity the gusty winds out west there is again that elevated fire threat so around noon so they're you know they're actually this model those model trends are backing down on the storms initially but they're still holding on strong that some rain may be aloft nearby albuquerque around four o'clock into the eastern highlands and again those yellow signifying rain may reach the ground so i would not be surprised if we maybe get at least some sprinkles in albuquerque and the leftover showers may move through santa fe maybe a few lightning strikes around nashiti san juan mckinley counties haldago county and a few sprinkles out east new mexico overnight a lot of that activity will just kind of meander and kind of be left over in the the mountains for tomorrow morning but another batch of storms will form tomorrow look at those yellows and look at those darker blues san juan mountain peak snow showers tomorrow morning some of those storms may approach santa fe taos silver city tomorrow morning before migraine eastward tomorrow afternoon watching out for more storms nearby albuquerque tucumcari look at rudoso and roswell raton and taos watching out for brief bouts of rain and some strong winds lightning from storms may spark up wildfires though something that will keep an eye on and as those wildfires spread because of rain cooled outflow wind gusts we do have to watch out for dry thunderstorms out west and wet thunderstorms out east now there is that elevator critical fire threat in southwest colorado northeast arizona southeast utah in western new mexico from from not from noon today to nine o'clock tomorrow and also tip for today as well we're gonna be watching out for at least a quarter to half an inch of rain from las vegas to roswell potentially but more likely near hobs and parts of the heel of national forest ahead but hotter and drier wednesday and thursday back to you chad all right thank you ryan taking a [00:41:45] Speaker 1: look at our traffic we are still working this crash this is eastbound i-40 between unser and coors it is causing some slowdown and as you are seeing uh eastbound 40 overall getting much busier as is southbound as you head toward the construction zone as well as the big guys we take a look at our big eye cam cars moving much slower than they were about 20 minutes ago guys uh no accidents it looks like uh that is causing this just accumulation of traffic all right 7 54 a.m when we return a look at the four-legged cosplay over the weekend that made some new mexico residents real life heroes well some albuquerque residents waking up with a new furry friend this morning thanks to a unique event this weekend animal humane new mexico held their first ever doggy con themed adoption event there were several it's so hard to read the script and look at the video i just want to watch the video several attractions including 15 local vendors two food trucks a mario kart tournament and of course [00:42:43] Speaker 19: the canine cosplayers one of our sweet little pets is in the process of getting adopted right now we've had several meet and greets today as well so um we're really hopeful that we see record numbers of adoptions and we certainly see the community coming out and very interested in uh bringing home that [00:43:00] Speaker 1: forever friend or a new sidekick now the event was free and some guests even took home as madison was saying a new four-legged friend it looked like there was a there was a villain there joker [00:43:10] Speaker 3: it was bane and joker right just two sweet little puppies yes yes i mean it's it's gotta be there right [00:43:17] Speaker 1: anyway uh big shout out to animal humane for hosting yeah i gotta love what they do i got my dog
