[0:00] bringing you breaking images from ankara and turkey this is the scene live ahead of the ongoing [0:10] nato summit that is taking place in turkey you can see there the turkish flag and the stars and [0:16] stripes of the american flag in the foreground stood with his back to the camera is the turkish [0:21] president rejip type erdogan you can hear there the shout of the honor guard alongside that carpet [0:26] that has been rolled out for the man who is about to emerge from the beast the armored limousine at [0:32] the heart of the u.s presidency because that man is the u.s president donald trump a little bit of [0:51] the hubbub there in turkey just approaching half past three local time a handshake between the two [0:59] rejip type erdogan in charge of nato's second largest standing military donald trump in charge of [1:06] the world's largest military in terms of expenditure 1.5 trillion u.s dollars and about to play the [1:13] national anthems of course of the united states and i should imagine of turkey too the salute there from [1:20] the president stood to the left-hand side of the screen he is arriving in this summit amid a tense [1:26] atmosphere between 32 member states of the nato alliance there is a transatlantic split between [1:33] the united states and europe europe and canada grouped together in its pressure pot that it now [1:40] faces following the u.s president saying that the alliance partners need to must do spend more [1:47] on their collective defense and they will say that they have done so since 2014 canada and the european [1:54] nations have spent an additional 504 billion pounds a year every year on their defense and amidst the [2:01] conversations today will of course be the situation in iran in the strait of hormuz across the middle east [2:06] and in ukraine speaking earlier the ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky reiterated his call [2:12] for his country to become a member state of ukraine he said it makes sense for ukraine's abilities to be [2:18] part of the nato alliance it was only natural for it to be part of that common security community and it would [2:24] bring extraordinary defensive capabilities if it did so volodymyr zelensky is saying that no other [2:30] country has the capability to defend against drones in the same scale that his country does he also [2:37] thanked partner nations across europe and also the united states for their efforts and their support [2:43] encountering the ballistic and cruise missile threat that has wrought widespread devastation on his [2:48] country in recent weeks russia increasingly using missiles to target civilian infrastructure across [2:55] the ukrainian nation we saw in kiev last week one nine-story building completely destroyed as [3:01] result of their strikes scores of civilians have been killed in those attacks so there will be pressure [3:08] for air defenses to be on the agenda throughout the course of the next couple of days we can also tell you [3:14] that sakir starmer has landed in the past few moments in ankara he is attending the native summit his [3:21] final summit as uk prime minister and he arrives with that defense investment plan military chiefs [3:27] and analysts have called for an additional 28 million pounds worth of investment into the uk defenses and [3:33] armed forces ultimately 15 billion pounds was found although the devil is in the detail and the criticism [3:40] of sakir is that five billion pounds of that defense investment plan is unfunded how will he sell [3:47] that to his nato allies how will he sell that to president trump president trump has often said that he respects [3:52] and likes and admires sakir as a man but disagrees with his policies and politics notably his stance on [4:00] offshore wind and oil and gas and also on migration but will he also take issue with the uk's commitment to defense [4:07] spending time will tell worth noting of course that when it comes to defense spending the united states [4:13] in nato leads the charge it then follows on with germany the next biggest cash spender and the united [4:21] kingdom the next biggest cash spender as well but there is a real push spearheaded by the nato secretary [4:27] general mark rutter and by donald trump for countries to commit 3.5 percent of their gdp onto defense [4:35] as swiftly as possible watching these developments is our defense security editor deborah haynes deborah [4:41] what should we look out for in the coming hours oh hi there hi sorry i'm just getting getting ready for [4:48] various arrivals we're at the um this defense industry forum which is taking place as leaders arrive [4:54] in ankara it's just down the road from the main summit venue and there have been announcements all [5:00] through the day from nato and other allies about billions tens of billions of dollars or pounds worth [5:07] of contracts on new military equipment it's all part of this push by mark rutter the nato secretary [5:13] general to give this strong message of unity and of strength and of the fact that allies are stepping up [5:21] and putting their money where their mouth is and investing more in defense all as donald trump is [5:28] obviously as you've just been saying about to be meeting with other heads of state and heads of [5:34] government it was last year at the nato summit in the hague where all allies agreed to spend up to [5:41] five percent on defense and wider security issues by 2035 since then there have been lots of [5:48] announcements by different allies about what they're exactly doing and how quickly they're going [5:52] towards that target but the nato secretary general has said that he really wants to have clear [5:57] concrete credible plans for how allies are going to be boosting their expenditure and one ally that [6:04] is going to be in particular focus is the uk given that it presents itself and has always been a leading [6:11] member of the nato alliance it's a nuclear power um and yet sorry i'm waiting for someone to arrive [6:19] and if they do arrive i'll let you know oh yes i think it's our our defense secretary is arriving uh he is [6:25] obviously going to be preparing i imagine for a maybe frosty reception from allies so they are [6:30] obviously very um very respectful i'm going to try and uh i'll shout a question to him i imagine i'll [6:36] be stiffly ignored but you never know i'll give it a go uh dan jarvis sky news we're doing a live as [6:44] you're arriving are you preparing for a uh a frosty reception from allies because you haven't spent enough [6:50] on defense they uh they probably won't thank me for doing that but there you go that's dan jarvis he's [6:59] about to speak at a panel session here um but we've been speaking to i've been speaking to officials uh [7:06] from other european countries and they do tell me that there is a sense of disappointment about uh the [7:12] uk and its spending plans so far kist arm is going to be here later he'll be speaking and having dinner [7:19] with allies as well and i'm sure everyone will be very polite to him um he has made defense one of [7:27] the areas that he has pointed to as successful during his premiership but those of us who cover [7:33] defense don't really understand how he can say that um properly given that there's been a lot of [7:39] strong rhetoric but so far not much in the way of meaningful credible action when it comes to um [7:45] genuinely ramping up defense spending even that defense investment plan that was finally belatedly [7:51] released last week these are the latest images from ankara to the right of the screen there [7:56] reggie type erdogan the turkish president to the left the american president donald trump shaking hands [8:01] as they meet for this two-day nato summit a key meeting of the alliance set against the backdrop of [8:07] the situation in iran and the middle east and the strait of homos and also against the continued war [8:13] in ukraine and the further conversations around defense spending let's take a listen to what's being [8:19] said and they're really uh somebody to be reckoned with and the nice part is that because of the [8:34] relationship that we have uh it's all gone very well i just want to say that i have a lot of respect for [8:41] the president and uh i think it's really to the benefit of both countries we're going to be [8:48] talking today about trade we're going to be talking about other things having to do with the military [8:53] lots of different things probably we'll mention iran where we have essentially decimated their [9:00] military they cannot have a nuclear weapon and uh we have some very good discussions but we do a lot [9:07] of trade with turkey we make great things and they make great things and we we've had a very very [9:14] it's had a very big impact on both of our countries so i just want to tell you that it's an honor to be [9:20] with you and we're going to have a lot of good meetings we're going to have good dinners good food [9:28] we're going to have a good time but mostly we're going to have a lot of work [9:31] and we're going to do good things for our countries thank you very much mr president thank you [9:36] questions being asked let's just see what the next answer is let's just bear with this live feed from [9:48] turkey for a few further minutes uh reaction from president trump thanking his host obviously [9:55] erdogan the leader of a country that sits so strategically between the european and asian [9:59] continents straddling the bosphorus as well keeping the control of the route into the black sea let's see [10:07] what is said a little pan there to pete hexath marco rubio amongst the dignitaries that have joined [10:13] uh president trump uh president trump often speaks off cuff let's take a listen make uh we have a very [10:20] good relationship i would think that many people i can tell you many people including the people sitting [10:28] right here thinks you know why wouldn't we do that we have a better relationship with [10:32] turkey and turkey's been in many ways much more loyal than other countries that we think would be loyal [10:37] so yeah something certainly we would consider it's a great plane it's the best currently the best plane [10:45] by far and uh it's certainly something we will consider yeah yes daniel please [11:06] you never know why a relationship is special uh some people you get along with and some people you don't [11:15] sometimes you get along with the toughest people like him and sometimes you don't get along with the [11:21] weakest most pathetic people you just don't get along maybe you don't respect them but uh i uh you know [11:29] from from the day we met we got along we had a pastor as i remember his name was pastor brunson [11:37] and it was a very big thing and it was a very traumatic he was sentenced to a long-term prison sentence and [11:45] uh i felt he was innocent and i called other people called they got nowhere i called the president and [11:53] he released him immediately it was something that the evangelical community will never forget and [12:00] because he was a good man pastor brunson so you know just things like that we just have always it's [12:05] always worked out and i think it's been from the very beginning from the first moment this just i said [12:11] it before it's it's a it's a chemistry that works between us there are those that i don't have a good [12:17] chemistry with i will tell you that and we work that out too say it uh our further troop drawdowns in [12:32] europe likely and are you satisfied with the progress that nato ellis well we're going to see i was very [12:36] disappointed with nato and frankly if it weren't held in turkey where my friend happens to be a very [12:44] strong leader a very strong uh person i it's possible that i wouldn't have attended i felt i had to [12:53] attend because of the fact that you know i know he's gone all out it was a big thing to have nato come [12:59] to turkey or any place else it's a big thing but we weren't treated well because we did something in [13:05] iran we don't need anybody's help i didn't even want their help but before i asked they said they [13:12] wouldn't be there and we've invested trillions of dollars in nato why to protect european countries [13:21] and others canada et cetera but to protect people countries from generally speaking it used to be [13:29] the soviet union now it's russia and i say that's fine but you would think that they'd be very willing to [13:39] do something to help us and they really weren't in the case of the united kingdom the prime minister i [13:46] guess he's no longer there maybe because of this it was a very unpopular thing he did he said [13:52] no we'll help after the war is over i said i don't need that kind of help we didn't need any help at [13:58] all and in a way i was testing people i was testing to see whether or not they'd be there because i've [14:02] long said that we helped them but i'm not sure that they'd be there for us and italy turned us down [14:08] and germany turned us down and france turned us down and it's okay but you know why are we spending [14:17] hundreds of billions of dollars hundreds of billions of dollars and they're not there for us [14:21] we've always been there for them
