[0:13] President Trump once again attacking Pope Leo. [0:16] And now Vice President J.D. Vance is giving the Pope some advice. [0:20] The mystery surrounding the death of a social media influencer found dead on vacation after celebrating her engagement. [0:26] Plus, the chunk of ice that slammed through the roof of a home. [0:30] And we take you to the world's largest bug farm. [0:33] We have much more What You Need to Know Now. [0:36] I'm Elizabeth Schulze from ABC News. It's Wednesday, April 15th. This is What You Need to Know. [0:41] We'll show you the restaurant freebies for Tax Day and the NFL reporter now resigning after photos with the coach of the Patriots. [0:48] But first, the big story. Millions on alert as dangerous storms sweep across the plains and Midwest. [0:54] At least seven tornadoes were reported across multiple states. [0:57] Five of those were in southern Wisconsin where this church was destroyed. [1:01] The National Weather Service says two tornadoes touched down in Michigan. [1:05] Widespread damage is being reported here in Carson City. [1:08] And a powerful twister packing 125 mile per hour winds caused severe damage in Ottawa, Kansas. [1:15] The roof of this hotel ripped off and homes destroyed. [1:18] In Iowa, this funnel cloud was spotted moving slowly across open fields. [1:24] It's all part of a multi-day severe weather outbreak across the region. [1:30] The dangerous weather is stretching to far west Colorado. [1:32] A massive pileup involving nearly 70 vehicles shut down part of Interstate 70. [1:38] Official state eight people were taken to the hospital involving multiple semi-trucks. [1:42] The cause is under investigation. [1:44] Now to the war in Iran. [1:45] President Trump says he thinks the war will be ending soon. [1:49] The first round of talks did not achieve the goals of the White House, [1:52] which led to the president implementing a military blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. [1:57] Ian Pannell is in Tel Aviv. [1:59] President Trump again saying that he thinks the war with Iran could end soon, [2:02] signaling a new round of peace talks potentially. [2:06] In Teleco Fox News, he thinks it's close to being over. [2:08] Also speaking to our John Carl saying, [2:10] I think you're going to be watching an amazing two days ahead. [2:13] But there'll be many similar predictions throughout this war, [2:16] which is now in its seventh week. [2:18] And Vice President Vance, who led the last peace effort, [2:21] warning there's a lot of mistrust between the two sides. [2:23] This morning, the Washington Post reporting that thousands more U.S. troops [2:27] are being sent to the region to squeeze Iran further. [2:30] And Iran's armed forces calling the U.S. blockade a violation of the ceasefire. [2:35] Now warning that Iran's armed forces will stop any exports and imports [2:39] in the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the Red Sea. [2:43] Pope Leo has landed in Cameroon as part of his 10-day African tour. [2:48] It comes amid attacks from President Trump, [2:50] who's suggesting the Pope is unaware of Iran's actions against its citizens. [2:54] President posting last night, [2:56] will someone please tell Pope Leo that Iran has killed at least 42,000 [3:00] innocent, completely unarmed protesters in the last two months, [3:04] and that for Iran to have a nuclear bomb is absolutely unacceptable. [3:09] Pope Leo has been outspoken against the war, [3:11] calling Trump's threat to destroy a whole civilization truly unacceptable. [3:16] Now Vice President J.D. Vance says the Pope should be more careful [3:19] when talking about theology. [3:22] In the same way that it's important for the Vice President of the United States [3:25] to be careful when I talk about matters of public policy, [3:28] I think it's very, very important for the Pope to be careful [3:31] when he talks about matters of theology. [3:33] If you're going to opine on matters of theology, [3:36] you've got to be careful, [3:38] you've got to make sure it's anchored in the truth, [3:40] and that's one of the things that I try to do, [3:42] and it's certainly something I would expect from the clergy. [3:45] Vance is the nation's highest-ranking Catholic politician. [3:48] The Pope has vowed to keep up his appeal for peace. [3:52] Back in the U.S., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department [3:54] is investigating a new sexual assault allegation [3:57] against disgraced former Congressman Eric Swalwell. [4:00] Lana Drews accuses Swalwell of assaulting her in a hotel room in 2018, [4:05] claiming she believes he drugged her drink. [4:08] Swalwell's attorney says he categorically and unequivocally denies the claims, [4:12] calling them false and fabricated. [4:14] Swalwell resigned this week amid growing accusations [4:17] with at least six women coming forward. [4:20] Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego, [4:21] one of Swalwell's closest friends on Capitol Hill, [4:24] was asked what he knew. [4:25] Swalwell had called you his best friend. [4:28] You have never asked him about any of the rumors [4:31] that have been swirling around Democratic politics [4:32] of his inappropriate behavior? [4:34] I did. I did ask him, and he liked me. [4:39] New York Congressman Mike Lawler is demanding Gallego [4:42] release all communications with Swalwell. [4:44] Gallego says his friendship with Swalwell is over, [4:47] adding he's willing to provide text messages between the two. [4:50] We're learning more about the upcoming royal visit [4:52] taking place during the last week of this month. [4:54] Britain's King Charles and Queen Camilla [4:56] will travel to Washington, D.C., New York, and Virginia. [5:00] In Washington, the king will address Congress [5:02] before a White House state dinner. [5:04] In 1991, his mother, Queen Elizabeth, [5:06] became the first British monarch [5:07] to address the United States Congress. [5:11] In California, a chunk of ice crashed through the roof [5:13] of this home near Los Angeles, landing in the living room. [5:17] Radar data shows a plane that flew over the area at the time. [5:20] No one was hurt. [5:22] We have much more What You Need to Know. [5:23] Here's your Daily Briefing. [5:35] Other big stories that we're following on ABC News. [5:38] A deepening mystery involving the death [5:40] of a popular lifestyle influencer in East Africa. [5:43] 31-year-old Ashley Robinson, [5:45] known to her Instagram followers as Ashley Janae, [5:48] was found dead in her hotel in Tanzania, [5:50] where she and her fiancé were celebrating her birthday. [5:54] Authorities say she died by suicide, [5:56] but her fiancé is being questioned by police, [5:58] and an investigation into her death is ongoing. [6:01] NFL reporter Diana Russini has resigned from The Athletic [6:05] after she and Patriots head coach Mike Rabel [6:08] were photographed hugging and holding hands [6:10] at a hotel in Arizona. [6:12] Both are married and have claimed [6:13] the interactions were platonic, [6:15] but The Athletic, which is owned by The New York Times, [6:18] opened an investigation, [6:19] which raised questions about Russini's conduct. [6:22] In her resignation letter, [6:23] Russini's saying, [6:24] this media frenzy is hurtling forward [6:26] without regard for the review process. [6:29] I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry [6:32] that has already caused far more damage [6:34] than I am willing to accept. [6:36] And today is April 15th, tax day, [6:38] for anyone who has yet to file [6:40] their 2025 federal income taxes. [6:42] And there's no reason to go hungry. [6:44] At Krispy Kreme, [6:45] tax filers can buy a dozen donuts [6:47] and get another dozen free. [6:49] Wendy's has six free chicken nuggets [6:51] with any $5 purchase. [6:53] Plenty of other chains are also offering tax day deals, [6:56] many involving the use of their apps. [6:59] And new today, [7:00] voters in South Hadley, Massachusetts, [7:02] have rejected that massive property tax hike. [7:05] One of the plans voted down [7:06] would have raised taxes by 50%. [7:09] Finally, before you go, [7:11] look inside the world's largest bug farm, [7:13] changing the way that we feed livestock. [7:15] The key here is protein-rich insects [7:17] known as the Black Soldier Fly. [7:20] A company in France is using the flies [7:22] to create more sustainable animal feed, [7:24] including for pets. [7:25] Feeding animals insects instead of meat and fish, [7:28] slashes energy, emissions, and costs. [7:31] Peggy Rooley visited the farm, [7:32] which houses billions of flies. [7:35] We are standing in a room full of flies. [7:37] The flies are on our camera lens right now. [7:40] It might seem bizarre, [7:41] but really what's in this room right now [7:43] could be life-changing. [7:45] So much, in fact, [7:46] that there is so much top-secret IP [7:48] in this industry, [7:50] we can't show half of what's in this room on camera. [7:54] Even the waste from the flies [7:55] is used for fertilizer. [7:58] That is what you need to know. [7:59] For breaking news and live updates throughout the day, [8:01] check out ABC News streaming on Disney+. [8:03] We'll see you in the next room.
