[0:00] Donald Trump spent 75 minutes, that's right, one hour and 15 minutes in an interview with [0:08] Time Magazine this week. [0:11] And there's so much in this interview, but I want to highlight one quote that he gave [0:18] in this extremely long interview, which basically reads as a riff on why he hates the media [0:24] so much, that I think is revealing both about him, his worldview, and how boxed in and cornered [0:32] he feels right now. [0:34] So let me get, first of all, right to the quote. [0:37] And I will tell you, I, on my sub stack, I went through and picked out 37 quotes from [0:43] Trump, but I want to highlight this one. [0:46] So if you want to see all of them, you can. [0:48] But here's the one I want to highlight. [0:50] It comes very late in the interview, and the context is Trump is bragging on all the [0:56] amazing things he's done at the White House, that it was really not very nice, and now it's [1:00] much nicer, and he doesn't get credit for it. [1:02] And he says this, quote, you haven't asked me one effing positive question, all of this. [1:08] What about this? [1:09] What about that? [1:10] What about that? [1:10] What about this? [1:11] All negative, okay? [1:14] That's our president, okay? [1:15] The president of the United States. [1:16] I want to tell you why I think that is so, so revealing, why the context matters and what [1:24] it tells us about him. [1:25] Before I do that, I want to ask that you subscribe. [1:28] I'm independent. [1:29] I'm authentic. [1:30] I hear every single day breaking down the big political news you need to know. [1:33] Hit that subscribe button. [1:35] All right, so let's do context. [1:37] The context is this. [1:38] Donald Trump is 30-ish days away from a, what looks to be significant setback for his party [1:47] in the midterm elections. [1:49] The House majority that Republicans currently hold appears almost lost. [1:54] The Senate majority that Republicans currently hold is teetering. [1:57] The political environment is turning worse and worse against Republicans. [2:02] Donald Trump's poll numbers, even though they already were not good, are going down even further. [2:07] So, the war in Iran continues on. [2:11] Gas prices continue to be high. [2:12] Diesel prices continue to be high. [2:14] Grocery prices continue to be high. [2:17] Everything is developing into this kind of perfect storm for Donald Trump. [2:22] Republicans are abandoning him, right? [2:24] We've seen Republican Senate candidates in Michigan, Kansas, Iowa, all say, we need to end [2:31] this war in Iran and we need to do it soon. [2:33] We need to cut prices, right? [2:34] So, everything is kind of caving in on Donald Trump at the moment. [2:38] And that context does matter because it seems odd to me, candidly, that he would sit down [2:44] for a hour-plus interview with, of all places, Time Magazine at this moment in his political [2:52] life. [2:52] He would, candidly, probably be better served trying to raise money or make calls to MAGA [2:58] supporters in some of these key states and districts or even campaign in some of these [3:03] more red states. [3:03] He chose to do this. [3:07] Sidebar, why Time Magazine? [3:08] Well, remember, Donald Trump's cultural references are stuck in the 1980s. [3:13] And in the 1980s, Time was a gigantic deal. [3:16] Glossy Magazine had a huge circulation. [3:19] Being on the cover was a very big deal. [3:20] And we know Trump is obsessed with being named Time's Man of the Year. [3:24] So, in his mind, Time is still Time as opposed to, oh, Time still has a website kind of thing. [3:30] End of sidebar. [3:33] So, he sits for this interview. [3:34] And the interview, to the reporter's credit, the interview is not contentious, but it's [3:38] pointed. [3:39] They ask him about the war. [3:42] They ask him about Republicans and those folks running away from him. [3:46] They ask him about inflation, about the Fed, right? [3:50] I mean, all of these difficult issues that he has. [3:53] And his response, and let me just quote it again here. [3:56] He eventually gets to his favorite subject. [3:59] And his favorite subject is quite clearly the ballroom, the helipad that he built, the stuff [4:05] they did with the Rose Garden, the arch, all the things they're doing around the White House. [4:11] And he keeps, towards the end of the interview, he keeps trying to bring the subject. [4:15] But no matter what is asked, he keeps bringing it back. [4:17] At one point, he says, I'll quote him, you've seen the white marble floor, right? [4:21] You've seen it. [4:21] Yeah, nobody can do that. [4:23] Very few people can do that. [4:24] Well, I know how to do it. [4:25] I made my money with luxury. [4:26] And the White House, the White House is a symbol of this country. [4:29] He keeps saying things like that. [4:31] But of course, that's not really what voters are concerned about. [4:34] So, the Time Magazine guy asks him questions about the economy and Iran. [4:38] And that's when he says, and again, quote, you haven't asked me one effing positive question. [4:45] All of this. [4:46] What about this? [4:46] What about that? [4:47] What about that? [4:48] What about this? [4:48] All negative. [4:50] And what Trump doesn't understand is that the job of the media is not to make him happy [4:57] and ask him questions that he wants the answer to. [5:00] The job of the media is to hold him accountable, right? [5:03] Afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted. [5:05] That's the old journalism mantra. [5:08] He doesn't get that. [5:10] He thinks we should have a state-run media that effectively reports what he wants to report [5:14] and anything else is fake, whether it's fake or not. [5:17] So, he doesn't seem to grasp that or he doesn't want to acknowledge that reality. [5:22] The fact that he loses his temper in such a way, and he quite clearly loses his temper [5:28] in that quote, I think is very revealing, not just about how he views the media, but about [5:32] how cornered he does feel. [5:34] It's why I think it's the most revealing quote in the entire interview. [5:38] On the one hand, Trump could have cut this interview off at any point. [5:41] I guarantee you his people did not block 75 minutes for an interview with Time Magazine. [5:46] Maybe they blocked 30 minutes, okay? [5:49] But he kept going. [5:51] And there's several times in the interview where his aides kind of try to interrupt that [5:55] Time published a full transcript, and I'll post that in this video. [5:57] But they try to say, hey, we're getting towards the end of our time, whatever, and he just [6:01] keeps going. [6:02] So, on the one hand, he loves talking to the media, and he kind of thinks that he can [6:07] bend them to his will. [6:08] On the other hand, he wants to make something happen that just isn't real. [6:14] He wants them to say, you're doing a great job, Mr. President, in this country. [6:20] The public loves you. [6:21] Everywhere you go, everyone cheers. [6:22] And these polls, they're all fake, and these are just people who hate you, and they have [6:26] Trump derangement syndrome. [6:28] But anyone who's a real American loves you, and we know that, and that's what we're going [6:31] to report on. [6:32] That's what he wants. [6:33] Now, I don't think he, there's no way that would ever happen, but remember where he is. [6:40] He is in the worst political spot of his entire political career, right? [6:46] We are now almost 12 years into Donald Trump as president or as a candidate. [6:51] He has never been in a worse spot. [6:55] 26% approval on the economy in an AP poll released on Thursday. [6:59] 31% overall job approval, though, you know, he's hitting lows virtually every time these [7:06] polls go into the field to ask voters what they think of him. [7:10] He knows that the train is coming toward his party, and they are laying across the tracks [7:16] at this point. [7:16] That every Republican I talk to, and they all say, we are in trouble. [7:21] This is, the political environment is bad. [7:24] And September has been worse than August, not better. [7:27] Trump, the bottom is falling out of Trump's numbers. [7:30] We are seeing, you know, all of a sudden, South Carolina is a race. [7:32] People are talking about Mississippi, Nebraska, Kansas, Florida, that all these Republican [7:38] races are coming on board. [7:39] And at some level, he is aware of that fact. [7:42] So what does he do? [7:43] He lashes out. [7:44] And what does he lash out at? [7:46] His favorite subject to lash out at the media, that he does it by cursing, that he does it by [7:52] losing his temper, again, so revealing. [7:56] He is a trapped animal. [7:58] He has been backed into a corner, and he is going back to his, he's reverting back to his [8:04] most animal instincts, which is attack, attack, attack, and attack the media because it's [8:10] worked for him in the past. [8:11] So I think that quote is telling. [8:13] I think it's telling of his frustration, his anger, his annoyance, the fact that he's having [8:20] trouble containing those things, even in a sit-down interview setting. [8:26] And, you know, I think that that is what his mind state is 30-ish days out from the election, [8:33] which makes me think, pay attention to what the guy says when he is on the campaign trail, [8:37] because I think you're going to see him get more and more extreme because he feels like [8:42] he's running out of options, and he does not like being out of control of a situation that [8:48] is looking worse and worse for him and his party. [8:50] All right, that's it for me. [8:52] You can go to my sub stack and check out my full breakdown of his speech. [8:56] Again, I cited one Trump quote. [8:58] There are 36 more in there that are probably worth seeing. [9:00] I do also hope, as I said before in the video, that you subscribe to my channel. [9:03] It is free.
