"no drone can pierce it there's no bullet can pierce it no matter how big the glass when you see it you'll see it coming it's starting to come now it's just thick and yet it's perfect vision now it's hard to believe you can do that so it's heavy bulletproof glass it's also drone proof and small..."
[0:00] no drone can pierce it there's no bullet can pierce it no matter how big the glass when you
[0:05] see it you'll see it coming it's starting to come now it's just thick and yet it's perfect vision
[0:11] now it's hard to believe you can do that so it's heavy bulletproof glass it's also drone proof and
[0:17] small missile if you can believe it small missile and what happens is you can take a look at it put
[0:23] it in front of your face and you can see through it just like i'm seeing you right now it's pretty
[0:27] amazing amazing stuff the technology they have today so you have uh the ceilings are drone proof
[0:35] missile proof bulletproof before the floor is very thick and all from underneath is totally uh
[0:43] designed in such a way it's the safest this is the safest place in washington when when we're having
[0:49] a dinner this will be the safest place so you can have world leaders you can have your president
[0:53] sitting here they've been wanting a much bigger space a much better space than they've had
[0:59] for 150 years president you've heard me say it you know what they never intended was getting
[1:04] something like this this is going to be very safe you can just sit here and let let people do whatever
[1:10] they want here nothing's going to happen this is the most most powerful building structurally the most
[1:16] powerful building they say ever built and it was designed that way so the president can have safety
[1:22] if he's having the president of china or russia or any place else when they're having dinner when they
[1:29] have 2 000 guests 2 500 guests they're totally safe they uh it's impervious so i just uh want to tell you
[1:39] that what you've done is amazing what you what you're building you're almost we're going to be finished
[1:43] pretty soon but the hard part is done and uh the one thing that i'm most fascinated with is what they've
[1:50] done underneath because what you know this goes down five stories it's five stories underneath
[1:56] and the military came to me and they said uh sir we've never had this opportunity at the white house
[2:01] because it's fragile and going underneath the building would it be possible we did we did everything
[2:08] they wanted and it's uh something this they said that's been their dream for 50 years it's been the dream
[2:14] of presidents have a ballroom for 150 years so we have everything on top and you'll start to see it we're
[2:20] building a it's a drone port it holds as many drones as you want can hold over 100 drones at the
[2:29] maximum size to weight weight is no problem and you see that when you see the power of the structure
[2:34] when you look at steel normally that would just be light steel you see it a lot when they build a
[2:39] plant where it's very light steel you can barely walk on it it's dangerous it's just it's called a
[2:44] rain roof this is a roof that's a structural roof and rarely done because the span is so long that
[2:52] it's very hard to do structurally uh we ordered the marble for the floor the marble is a really
[2:58] magnificent marble it's a cut it's a vein that people have been after for 50 years and the owner of the
[3:08] quarry didn't want to sell it but he liked me and he also was so honored to be doing it for the
[3:17] country for the white house and the marble floor you'll see it is the most beautiful marble you'll
[3:22] ever see it's a special vein this is a vein that everybody wanted for a long time and i got it and
[3:29] i got it for the floor of the ballroom at the white house and it's going to be beautiful the walls are
[3:35] going to be very you'll see a lot of glass a lot of you'll be looking at the treasury building which
[3:40] is right there you'll be looking at the front of the white house and you see if you look back there
[3:47] you're looking at the other side of the white house you have north and south and the kitchen is
[3:53] underneath because i put the kitchen on top and we have large staircases coming from the kitchen
[3:59] if i put the kitchen on top you would lose three walls because the kitchen takes about 30 percent of
[4:06] the space so the kitchen is all the space that you have right underneath and it's going to be top of
[4:12] the line so there has never been anything built like this and it's for the country and it's free
[4:18] you got it free of charge thank you very much and uh some great patriots have devoted a lot of money
[4:25] given a lot of money to get it built and so we didn't use taxpayers money to build this ballroom and
[4:31] it's going to be uh when it's completed it'll be the best anywhere in the world you know when i was in
[4:37] china we went to the great hall it's called the great hall of china and it's a you know it's incredible
[4:44] but this is actually larger this is larger and it will be it'll be the most magnificent when you see
[4:51] what we're doing between the marbles and the bronzes and all the different things that we're doing top of
[4:55] the line great architects our top architects and we have another man that's worked with me for a long
[5:04] time together we were the ones that not only cleaned up washington in terms of graffiti and and open up
[5:12] you know the statues and the fountains and we fixed everything up made it beautiful and everybody's
[5:17] talking about it but a man that helped us a lot with crime because crime is almost non-existent now in
[5:25] washington we went from one of the most unsafe cities in the country to one of the safest cities
[5:32] in the country and people all day long and white house i walk in and people that work there thank you
[5:38] thank you sir thank you thank you so we have a white house where people can walk to work when i first
[5:46] came in two years ago my first term was it was different it wasn't you didn't have the kind of
[5:50] crime it developed during the biden administration it may have had to do with covet and nobody
[5:55] knows exactly but it was a killing field washington dc and we worked together with experts and we brought
[6:02] in the national guard which who were fantastic and we worked with washington police and we have now one
[6:08] of the safest cities anywhere anywhere in the world but anywhere certainly in the country and uh again
[6:15] this was a place where a young man would leave iowa come to see the lincoln memorial the washington
[6:22] monument jefferson come to see whatever come to see the white house and they call up the parents i'm
[6:29] sorry but your son has been killed and they send the son home in a casket or the daughter in a casket
[6:40] three a week we're losing three people a week three murders a week by savages and we moved them out we
[6:47] moved over 5 000 people out of washington dc they came in through the open borders and they came in
[6:54] viciously and violently and we had a lot of problems with democrats because they wanted to protect
[6:59] killers i mean i don't understand it but who does who does makes no sense but we got them out of here
[7:06] we moved them back some were so violent some killed many people that we didn't want to send them even
[7:12] back to their country we hate to take the cost of having them in jail for the next 50 years but we didn't
[7:18] want to take a chance that they'd be able to come back and you know speaking about being able to come
[7:24] back for the last 17 months zero illegal migrants have been allowed into our country zero which is
[7:33] something that nobody thought was possible so we're very happy about that we're very happy about washington
[7:38] dc people are coming to washington uh all the restaurants were closing because of crime and
[7:44] now all the restaurants you can't if you're a restaurateur you can't get a space you can't get
[7:49] a space and people are dining and they're having a good time and they have a safe it's the capital
[7:55] it's the capital of our country we have to make it beautiful and we have to make it safe and this
[8:00] will be down this building when it's completed will be one of the great one of the great buildings
[8:05] in washington dc and they'll understand that most people understand it just this whole magnificent space
[8:11] will be a very important space in the future life of our country so with that i'd like to have the
[8:18] secretary of the interior a great man a great success fantastic governor for eight years in north
[8:26] dakota a very successful businessman and he's done a really great job running the interior and thank you
[8:33] very much doug bergam everybody thank you very much thank you mr president uh today of course is the day
[8:45] well from the ballot box to now talking about the ballroom it's a very mellow and different
[8:50] president donald trump today as we are hearing from him uh they're right within the construction of uh
[8:56] one of his passion projects but clearly a tough day for the president as that blue wave has completely
[9:04] changed uh the face of politics and the legacy of the president's future for the next two years the blue
[9:35] wave crashing into the shores of georgia and maine we did it working people did overrunning the beaches in
[9:42] the carolinas reaching the red flood walls in texas tonight and tonight we defeated goliath
[9:57] democrats flipping the house and taking back the senate with commanding majorities and making historic
[10:04] gains in state capitals from coast to coast a stunning review of president trump the historic
[10:22] midterm win the likes of which we haven't seen in more than 50 years tonight we celebrate this victory
[10:31] and tomorrow we get back to work the way that turned into a tsunami right here on abc news live
[10:42] a democratic dream and a gop disaster good afternoon everyone i'm kira phillips from our nation's
[10:48] capital democrats sweeping back into power in a historic landslide as voters deliver a stinging
[10:54] rebuke of president trump mike johnson was correct the polls were wrong it wasn't simply a blue wave
[11:07] it was an american tsunami against all odds democrats have won the senate and we have five words for
[11:16] the american people relief is on the way relief is on the way but votes still being counted in several
[11:25] races democrats already securing more than enough seats to take back the house and senate something
[11:30] that seemed unthinkable as recently as this summer leading the upsets adam hamilton in kansas and james
[11:37] talarico in texas they'll be the first democrats to represent their respective states in the senate in
[11:44] decades republicans also seeing major losses pile up in the house we're already seeing a shake up in
[11:50] leadership and sources saying that speaker mike johnson will not run for minority leader white house
[11:56] correspondent karen travers joins me now wow a lot to unpack karen so much to unpack kira and remember
[12:03] the president's message when he was out on the campaign trail at those 28 rallies over the last
[12:08] month was pretend i'm on the ballot to try to get his supporters out and make sure they voted well it
[12:14] was a very different message from the president last night as the results were coming in he said he was
[12:20] not on the ballot but if he was the results would have been different that republicans would have won
[12:26] in a landslide last night he spoke to fox news and weighed in on what last night meant here's what the
[12:31] president had to say i don't view it as a hit on me i think what we've done uh we've had the greatest
[12:39] two years in the history of the presidency in terms of the economy in terms of all the things that we've
[12:45] done and i think the democrats did a good job i really do i think they did a good job they fought
[12:51] hard they were um you know they've been fighting for a long time they've been fighting me for a long
[12:56] time this fight's been going on for ages kira we have heard presidents in the past talk about their
[13:05] midterm election losses in some pretty stark terms george w bush talked about a thumping barack obama
[13:11] talked about a shellacking we haven't heard that type of take from this president yet but he has
[13:16] also been talking about what it might mean for his agenda and working with democrats mixed messages on
[13:21] the one hand he has said sure i could work with democrats he has also indicated though kira he will be
[13:27] vetoing anything democrats send his way that was his message in the lead up to yesterday saying he would
[13:33] block their agenda and veto whatever democrats try to push through kira yeah it's pretty remarkable to
[13:39] hear the president united states say democrats did a good job well vice president jd vance says the iran
[13:46] war is the reason that republicans lost what does the data show this is an interesting post from the
[13:51] vice president today trying to separate himself from a signature policy of course of this administration
[13:57] the war with iran vice president jd vance says the reason we lost republicans is the war he said the
[14:04] president said so himself last night and in this lengthy post here he goes on to say if you'd like
[14:09] to argue it was worth it that losing the senate for the next six years was worth it then do so
[14:14] argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay agree or disagree that's at least honest but when you look
[14:20] at the numbers from the voter poll last night the war with iran was not the top issue that was driving
[14:26] voters decisions last night we really saw that it was about the cost of living even corruption was
[14:31] crucial to voters decisions now of course when you look at cost of living the war with iran is driving
[14:37] a lot of that because gas prices going up and diesel prices also seeing record highs right now but i
[14:43] think when you look at this post from vice president vance kira it is certainly an indication of trying
[14:47] to separate himself from the policy of the president right now on a very unpopular war with iran
[14:53] all right karen travers from the white house thank you with those twin victories in the house and
[14:58] senate return the democratic party to full control of congress now for the first time since 2023 now
[15:03] creating a new era of divided government our alex roche has been working all through the night for us
[15:08] uh alex uh let's just take a look at the current balance of power now i mean we're also still waiting
[15:15] for some results yeah so still waiting for some results and i want to start on the house right now
[15:20] here we've been talking a lot about the senate but listen you remember the magic number for the house
[15:24] democrats needed to net three seats a total of three seats they've got 25 so far and still they
[15:32] could continue to pick up some ground here and if we really kind of focus in on some of their targets
[15:38] right this was the list of of potential democratic flips and you look at how many of these have turned
[15:46] blue the only the only one that republicans were able to hold thus far is here in kansas kansas too
[15:52] that was in a trump plus 15 area if we're looking at republican targets areas where they look to gain
[15:59] ground uh democrats really held and so that's part of the reason why you're seeing them uh going back to
[16:06] congress with the biggest majority in the house basically since 2008 that was barack obama's first term
[16:13] we're also we're talking about this house redistricting specifically in texas right you heard
[16:18] republicans talk about the president talk about wanting to carve out ground so they could gain
[16:22] five additional seats well this shows where they were hoping to gain ground with those redistricted
[16:29] districts if you will so many in texas democrats held across the board some uh they even managed to uh
[16:37] managed to stave off republican challenges from seats that had been vacant so really really kind of
[16:42] painting the picture uh for uh this historic night for democrats yeah it was all right alex appreciate
[16:48] how hard you've been working through the night for us thank you all right well we have been discussing
[16:53] as you know all afternoon the blue tsunami crashing into the lone star state as democrats uh flipped for
[16:59] the first time in decades james talarico now projected to be the state's next senator coming out on top
[17:06] over trump endorsed ken paxton gina hinojosa also slated to become the first latina governor of texas
[17:13] after beating incumbent greg abbott by a seven point margin that race all about the economy affordability
[17:19] and the cost of living democrats in the state now celebrating a victory no longer out of reach
[17:26] i was not expecting this because i spent my whole life not seeing this the fact that we can do this
[17:33] means that we can do anything it means that we can we can be better and we can do better things this
[17:41] is feels what texas voters are to me that i've seen on the doorstep this this is exactly right
[17:50] so yeah i feel like texas is finally seeing proper for who we are now 10-4 all right straight back to
[18:01] president trump he's apparently taking uh questions from reporters let's see uh how this conversation
[18:06] goes the speaker was fantastic the uh the people under him were fantastic all good people i guess
[18:15] right now you have two candidates right did you ask the speaker to soak down no no no no mr president vice
[18:21] president vance says the reason republicans lost the war lost last night was the war in iran well i think
[18:28] it's uh largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short term and probably that's uh
[18:36] probably it's true but at the same time if i had it to do again i'd have to do it again because long
[18:40] term uh it's the only answer you can't let iran have a nuclear weapon i do yeah i mean well you have
[18:46] no choice i mean i thought the oil would go up a lot more and i did it on that basis you have no choice
[18:52] you have to do it you can't let iran have a nuclear weapon or everything that you see here
[18:56] some day might not exist and uh maybe this but this building might be the only one that does
[19:03] so yeah i i think that uh look i mean i'll get along probably with the democrats unless they want
[19:10] to be destructive but they have the power of the veto so if we don't like what they're doing or they'll
[19:15] they've already called and they want to talk about things and that's fine but yeah people
[19:20] pay the iran thing we had to do and we continue to do it uh we have tremendous oil flowing out of
[19:26] the hormone straight now at the beginning there was none and uh probably that's the primary reason
[19:33] the the price not the war the price no look i mean if i were on the ballot we would have won
[19:48] you saw the people that were packed thousands and thousands of people at every rally and if i was on
[19:53] the ballot we would have won but they just you couldn't transfer that love there was such love
[19:58] at those rallies it was incredible uh we weren't able to transfer the love to candidates did you
[20:04] think they need to try to talk about and just bring that that speech on monday which one are we talking
[20:10] about the one at the reflecting board did any marie advise you to do something i heard it was a very
[20:15] good speech got great reviews that was only a speech on the reflecting board that had nothing to do with
[20:20] anything else that was a speech very much like this is today on this incredible place that we're
[20:26] building at the white house it's going to be here for many many years and serving our country well
[20:31] that that was only a sort of a ribbon cutting because the reflecting pool hasn't worked since
[20:36] 1922. it's uh you know over 100 years it's never worked so it's leaked and was always a mess and we
[20:44] fixed it we made it great that that was not a speech that was just talking about the reflecting
[20:49] pool and then a couple of other comments i mean our speeches were really the speeches made at the
[20:55] 30 rallies and those speeches were that was tremendous love it was it was pretty amazing
[21:05] i can't tell you that they may tell you but i can't tell you
[21:10] no no no are you concerned about it not even a little bit it would i think it would destroy i think
[21:16] it would destroy the democrat party if they did that because impeachment for no reason what for
[21:21] having a successful country our country is more successful now than at any time in its history
[21:26] watch the beam go up
[21:34] okay so here's what's interesting as we're listening to the president uh there um calm not chaotic right
[21:44] now it actually appears that the president is accepting the results of the midterm elections even
[21:50] saying democrats did a good job and it's a bluer political map for sure and also a potentially
[21:56] narrow path to contest it even if the president wanted to i mean he will more than likely find
[22:03] himself little room now to fight back because the blue wave results have washed out trump's wave of
[22:09] legal challenges now simply because fewer races came close enough to trigger post-election litigation and
[22:15] it appears the president is seeing that right now this week the supreme court even denied the doj's
[22:22] efforts to temporarily block california from counting mail-in ballots it tried to argue you know were cast
[22:28] by non-citizen voters and then in alaska it's expected to certify its election results despite the
[22:34] legal challenge there over allegations of partisan tricks to recruit the other dan sullivan candidate with
[22:40] the hopes of confusing voters and impacting the vote i thought this would be a great time to
[22:45] bring in our legal contributor uh james sample um as we were listening to the president there um you
[22:51] know we've been talking all about the ballot box he's in the ballroom focusing on that i i think if you
[22:59] look at what we just witnessed it's a very different different president this morning um and i don't
[23:06] think there's a scenario where we could actually see his doj um you know take on these legal challenges
[23:14] in alaska uh especially if senator sullivan wins kira i think you're absolutely right and that is
[23:20] a remarkable split screen to be thinking about the results of last night's election and then to have
[23:25] him at the ballroom uh and then taking questions talking about uh the idea of for example the speech
[23:31] at the reflecting pool getting in his words great reviews i think that speaks to a certain level of the
[23:37] bubble and the sort of feedback loop that he's been in and that some voters at least uh reacted to last
[23:43] night but with respect to the litigation you are absolutely on the mark which is to say that the the
[23:48] these the election margins were too big to contest and so voters voices rather than litigation in
[23:56] courtrooms ends up being uh the basis of the way this election was decided we don't have
[24:01] 60 seriatum one after another lawsuits to go through uh for a stop the steal kind of scenario
[24:07] because the margins were simply too great now there could very well be some litigation that
[24:12] grows out of alaska i think that that's going to take a couple of weeks because the margin right now is
[24:18] so small that it will take time but even get to determine whether or not uh that we go to rank
[24:23] trace voting for example so then does the scale of republican losses here across the country
[24:31] indicate that we could see you know fewer challenges to the results than if more races were close i think
[24:40] that's absolutely right karen i think that that's a credit to the voters it's also a credit to some
[24:45] of the work that was put in before the election by lawyers by non-profit groups by legislators and
[24:52] by judges around the country who stopped the efforts before they started you know rejecting the save
[24:57] act you referenced the california litigation that case involving those 20 000 ballots was rejected by
[25:02] four courts over the span of less than 10 days james sample uh appreciate you thank you so much
[25:10] yeah it's it's a it's a new era that is uh for sure different time a new era and speaking of that
[25:17] um let's take it to tom abrams from our abc station and ktrk you are in the center of one of the biggest
[25:23] headlines uh without a doubt uh tom and that is in the state of texas i mean the last time texas had
[25:30] a female governor it was the tough no nonsense democrat uh ann richards so what do you think
[25:36] ann would say about uh gina hina hosts win here it's probably fair to say she would say something very
[25:44] clever uh she'd have a quip i'm sure and would make people uh feel at ease and laugh at the same time
[25:50] uh you're right this is a historic first for the state of texas uh having the first hispanic
[25:55] governor first hispanic woman as governor also the first woman lieutenant governor in vicky goodwin
[26:02] i've spoken with a lot of republicans and democrats throughout the night last night and again this
[26:06] morning all of them seem very surprised not that a democrat broke through and won statewide but that
[26:13] it happened up and down the ballot and by the margins that we've seen so let's talk about
[26:20] the races down the ballot and and how did let's just talk about how everything turned out and what
[26:26] this means now for the lone star state it's pretty remarkable uh no democrat has won statewide here in
[26:34] texas as i know you've reported uh many times since 1994 some 32 years uh there were a lot of people who
[26:42] thought okay maybe james tallarico could win or maybe john rosenthal was running for uh the state
[26:47] railroad commissioner which regulates oil and gas here maybe he could win nobody thought it would be
[26:53] up and down the ballot of all the constitutional offices from governor lieutenant governor u.s senate
[26:59] attorney general agriculture commissioner comptroller who basically handles the state's purse book uh along
[27:07] with the railroad commissioner i mean it was a complete and total sweep and none of those races were even
[27:13] close tom abrams appreciate you thank you tom and it's still a bare knuckle brawl to the finish in
[27:22] alaska democrat mary peltola taking on incumbent republican dan sullivan in a fight to control the
[27:28] senate as those accusations of dirty tricks continue to swirl around patola's campaign raising questions of
[27:34] just how far a candidate is willing to go to win our trevor all remains there in anchorage for us on this
[27:41] race that is still too close to call all right trevor bring us up to date where do things stand right now
[27:48] well kira as expected it is it is extremely close and we've already seen the lead ping pong back and
[27:52] forth with the results coming in last night and then just through the past couple hours so where it
[27:57] stands right now is mary peltola has again taken the lead but it is extremely narrow less than half of
[28:02] percentage point we're talking about 626 votes or so give or take and we expect a trickling of votes to
[28:10] come in it could very easily take weeks before we know who officially wins here and of course we know
[28:16] alaska there's a few different complications here so you have ranked choice voting which means in order
[28:20] for any of these candidates to win in the first round they're going to need to secure 50 of the
[28:25] vote that looks increasingly unlikely which means whoever is last of the four candidates will probably
[28:30] be eliminated it will go to a later round all of that semantics just to say it's probably going to
[28:36] be a couple weeks before we have a winner declared but as you know we've had a spotlight on alaska
[28:41] for the past week or so because of that new york times report alleging the peltola campaign recruited
[28:46] this second dan sullivan into the race to potentially siphon some votes away from the incumbent dan sullivan
[28:53] it's not clear that that swayed any voters and it's also not clear that that is going to have an impact on
[28:58] the race we know that the department of justice tried to litigate it a federal judge over the weekend
[29:02] tossed out that lawsuit but we still have some ongoing criminal investigations federal officials
[29:07] alaska officials that's all hanging over this as well and so even though the the democrats have
[29:12] already established firm control of the senate alaska could be in for a battle for quite some time still
[29:18] well the trump administration is vowing to appeal after a judge throughout the doj's lawsuit over the
[29:23] race if senator dan sullivan were to lose then trevor what happens next so we do expect that appeal to
[29:31] play out although i'm not sure if it would have any legs kira because historically this process of
[29:36] ballot stacking has been found pretty much over and over to be legal there is one hurdle that i think
[29:41] dan sullivan's campaign and republicans are going to be paying attention to and that is their lawsuit
[29:48] was not just trying to withhold the results if dan sullivan lost it specified that they want to block
[29:54] that certification if dan sullivan loses and peltola's margin of victory was smaller than the total
[30:00] number of votes that the second dan sullivan was going to get now right now if the race ended right
[30:05] now that would hit mary peltola's margin of victory is smaller than the second dan sullivan's total vote
[30:12] he's getting about 1.6 percent of the vote three or four thousand votes it's possible though as we get
[30:19] more and more votes and it seems the peltola campaign is confident that they think their lead is
[30:23] going to grow it's possible her margin of victory is going to be even larger than the two dan
[30:27] sullivan's combined which would really leave the republicans with no leg to stand on kira
[30:32] all right trevorall trevorall we will stay in close contact with you we'll be right back with more

[37:56] theaters friday democrats winning big in the midterms clawing back power after two years in
[38:20] the political wilderness good afternoon everyone i'm kira phillips votes still being counted but
[38:25] democrats already won enough seats to take back both the house and senate the only question now is how
[38:31] big their majorities will be the results reflect a collapse of the historic coalition that trump put
[38:37] together to win the white house just two years ago one of the biggest wins of the night coming in the
[38:42] michigan senate race abc news projecting democrat abdul al-sayed will win after a bitter battle with
[38:49] gop congressman mike rogers and in his victory speech el-sayed calling out his opponent as well as the
[38:55] president and vice president take a listen enjoy your retirement i know you got a house in florida and
[39:03] two yachts see you chose hate and michigan chose hope may we never have to see the likes of you in
[39:11] the state again jd habibi there is this delicious irony in the fact that you're constitutionally obligated to
[39:26] swear me in january donald look i know you you struggled with my name so after jd swears me in
[39:35] in january you can just go on and call me senator deputy political director ben siegel joining me now
[39:41] for more ben it is a new dawn for dems yeah it's certainly uh almost exceeding the expectations of
[39:49] the democrats i was talking to before election day uh we are approaching 240 seats in the house there are
[39:55] still uh you know more than a dozen races that have yet to be counted so this has already exceeded
[40:00] the majority democrats had in the first trump term and then when you add the senate on top of that
[40:05] really this remarkable high watermark seven senate seats so far two more that are still very close
[40:10] have not yet been projected uh this is really an incredible repudiation uh of the first two years
[40:16] of president trump's term uh and in some ways uh a mandate given to democrats here for the next two
[40:21] years so let's talk about one of the races that's still too close to call could mississippi really
[40:27] send a democrat to the senate it's still possible for sure i mean it's coming down really to provisional
[40:34] ballots ballots where there are some irregularities with someone's name and how they sign their name
[40:40] someone's address there's about 9 000 of them that will be reviewed there was also an independent
[40:45] candidate candidate in this race who got 20 000 votes so this is really coming down to the wire
[40:50] there's no recount in mississippi but we know it will take several days to kind of comb through those
[40:54] ballots and we expect these to be certified by counties uh later on in november so uh in the next
[41:00] couple days we should get some clarity in mississippi at least well let's talk about what this means now
[41:05] for president trump's final two years in office um he's a lot of questions about his legacy yeah it's the
[41:13] you heard from uh you know the presumptive uh next speaker hakeem jeffries and his leadership team
[41:18] today he said the democrats will be focusing on sort of building out the planks of their agenda
[41:23] focusing on lowering uh the cost of living and issues of affordability uh for the american people
[41:29] you heard the president as well say that you know there are some areas where he might be interested
[41:33] in working with democrats but he also wields the veto pen and at the same time he still seems
[41:38] incredibly fixated on on some of the dc uh construction projects that have occupied so much time
[41:44] uh in his in his second term here so where will there be common ground we'll have to see but uh
[41:50] definitely going to be a lot of pressure on this administration on the in the form of oversight not
[41:55] just from the house but the senate as well and also with uh questions around uh some of the other
[42:00] companies and and and alleged um profiting that people around the administration have made off the
[42:05] first two years of this term ben siegel thank you thanks well it's a state trump carried and democrats didn't
[42:14] just compete they conquered delivering a stunning one-two punch for their party we're talking about
[42:19] that democratic sweep of the two big statewide races in the buckeye state ohio electing a historic
[42:25] candidate for governor and a familiar face to the senate matt rivers was there hey there well it was a
[42:31] clean sweep for the two democrats at the top of the ticket here in ohio sherrod brown winning his
[42:36] senate race and amy acton set to be the new governor acton will become the first female governor of the
[42:42] buckeye state the first democrat to take this office in 20 years after what became a really
[42:47] personal campaign that race really turning in october after her opponent the big ramaswamy
[42:53] released an ad with acton's estranged mother saying that acton shouldn't be governor that despite the
[42:58] fact that her mother chose to stay with her then husband acton's stepfather despite him being charged with
[43:04] raping acton when she was 12 years old now abc news polling also showing that acton had high favorable
[43:11] ratings among the seven in ten ohio voters who said they were dissatisfied with the economy and
[43:16] that economic malaise surely a huge reason that former senator sherrod brown is headed back to
[43:21] washington just two years after losing his senate seat to republican bernie moreno this time around
[43:26] though he was facing incumbent john houston brown leaned into a populist affordability message and this
[43:33] time it really landed winning handily in a state that president trump won by 11 points just two years ago in
[43:40] 2024 so much like the rest of the country a lot of very happy democrats today in ohio back to you
[43:47] matt rivers thank you well the hawkeyes turning from yellow to blue was a historic night in iowa as
[43:53] well for the first time in nearly two decades a democrat will represent in the senate iowa democratic
[43:59] state rep josh turk defeating republican rep ashley hinson also becoming the first paralympic gold
[44:04] medalist elected to the u.s senate our elizabeth schulze was there hey elizabeth hey kira this was
[44:12] a resounding win for democrats here in iowa flipping a governor's race a senate seat and three house
[44:17] seats from red to blue a clear rebuke of president trump in a state that perhaps has been hit hardest
[44:23] by his economic policies like the spike in gas and diesel from the iran war and tariffs democrat josh
[44:29] turk a paralympian and state representative becoming the first democrat elected to the senate from
[44:34] iowa since 2008. he told me that his platform was all about common sense policies to improve the cost
[44:40] of living and that clearly resonated here voter polls showed six in ten voters are very concerned
[44:46] about the cost of gas diesel health care and food and across the country three quarters of voters say
[44:52] the economy is in not so good or poor shape overwhelmingly voters are saying that inflation has caused
[44:59] hardship for their families many democrats also ran on attacks against president trump's signature tax law
[45:05] that slashed snap food benefits access to health care and the message of economic inequality also
[45:12] resonating very strongly with voters too here in iowa josh turk talked about prairie populism this pledge
[45:18] to root out corruption in washington and work for everyday americans instead of just a handful of
[45:25] billionaires kira lisbeth schulze thank you and in georgia democrats celebrating their success turning
[45:31] the peach state from purple to blue after sweeping races statewide they are projected to win both the
[45:37] senate seat and the governor's race democrat keisha lance bottoms flipping the governor's mansion and is now
[45:43] the country's first ever black
