[0:08] For the first time, the woman at the center of the scandal [0:10] with fire at Michigan head football coach Jerome Moore [0:13] exclusively telling her story. [0:15] He would control me. [0:18] After a years-long affair, [0:19] then accusing him of trespassing into her home. [0:22] Did you fear for your life? [0:23] Oh my gosh, yes. [0:24] I mean, he's 6'4". [0:26] Claiming colleagues, including people in leadership, [0:29] knew and even encouraged their relationship. [0:31] They cared more about winning football games. [0:34] The terrifying thing she says he did right before his arrest. [0:38] Plus, Titanic, the Broadway send-up of Titanic with a twist. [0:43] Celine Dion believes that she was on the Titanic [0:45] and she uses her eyes and her songs to narrate the story. [1:31] Good evening, thank you for joining us tonight. [1:34] The ABC exclusive interview. [1:36] We're hearing for the first time from Paige Shiver, [1:39] the woman at the center of the story [1:41] that sent shockwaves to the sports world, [1:44] carrying on a years-long affair with Sharon Moore, [1:47] one of college football's most prominent coaches, [1:50] who she says went from sweet and loving [1:51] to controlling and manipulative, [1:54] until the terrifying end that led to his downfall. [1:57] Here's ABC's Lindsay Davis. [2:00] He grabs the knives, so I start backing the knives. [2:02] Butter knives. [2:03] Mm-hmm. [2:04] And he comes at me, and he said, [2:06] you ruined my life, as he's pointing the knives at me. [2:10] Paige Shiver describes that terrifying moment [2:13] that she says changed everything. [2:16] I'm sure I'm in my life right now. [2:18] I did not touch her. [2:20] I did not assault her. [2:21] He barged into my apartment unannounced. [2:25] He got fired, and what he wanted to do [2:27] is come over and terrorize me and control me, [2:31] and that's exactly what he did. [2:33] The incident led to the arrest [2:35] and stunning fall from grace [2:36] for the fast-rising University of Michigan [2:38] football head coach, Sharon Moore. [2:40] You alleged that you faced years of harassment, [2:44] manipulation, and exploitation [2:46] at the hands of Sharon Moore. [2:47] How so? [2:48] Here's a man that had complete control over me, [2:53] over my emotions, over my career, [3:00] and he knew that, and he used it against me. [3:05] Moore and his now 32-year-old executive assistant, [3:08] Paige Shiver, engaged in a years-long affair [3:11] that began when she was just an intern. [3:13] At the time, he was an offensive coordinator. [3:16] Did you feel pressured to have the relationship [3:18] in order to have job security? [3:21] Yes. Yes, I did. [3:23] The 40-year-old married father of three [3:25] was a star on the rise, [3:27] a national figure leading one of the top [3:29] college football programs in the country. [3:31] Did you love him? [3:32] Back then, I did, [3:33] but obviously looking back at things [3:35] and really reflecting on what was happening, [3:39] that's, yeah, that's not love at all. [3:41] Did you all tell each other that you love each other? [3:44] Yes. Mm-hmm. [3:45] Shiver is now speaking out for the first time [3:47] about the scandal that's rattled the college sports world, [3:51] an affair that spiraled with the top coaches firing [3:53] and the legal saga that followed. [3:56] And so at what point would you say [3:58] that it went beyond being a professional relationship [4:01] to romantic? [4:02] This January of 2022, [4:05] he originally would direct message me on Instagram. [4:08] He started, like, just reacting to my stories [4:13] with, like, a fire emoji. [4:16] And then, what's your drink of choice? [4:19] What alcohol do you like? [4:21] Again, he was always coming down to my desk, [4:23] always talking to me. [4:25] But you knew he was married? [4:27] At the beginning, I did not, [4:28] like, in the first month. [4:30] But yes, later on, yes, I did. [4:32] And at the time, [4:33] I didn't know that his wife was pregnant. [4:35] And when I found out, I confronted him. [4:39] And he said, yes, you know, it is what it is, [4:43] but, like, we're still getting a divorce. [4:45] As you know, people online have been harsh [4:48] and suggested that you're a homewrecker. [4:52] How can you be a victim and complicit at the same time? [4:57] How do you respond to those critics? [4:59] Yeah, I mean, I don't think you really understand it [5:02] until you sit down and think about everything. [5:05] He was manipulating me from the beginning. [5:10] He knew my heart. [5:11] He knew how much I cared about people, [5:13] and he used it against me. [5:16] I obviously blame myself for falling into that. [5:21] But at the end of the day, [5:23] I mean, he was very good at manipulating. [5:25] Quickly, the relationship turned even more complicated. [5:28] In May of 2022, [5:29] she says she found out she was pregnant by more. [5:32] Yeah, this is something I didn't think [5:35] I'd have to talk about, to be honest, [5:37] to, like, the whole world. [5:40] So it's something I've never really wanted to talk about. [5:44] Are you willing to talk about it? [5:48] Mm-hmm. Yep. [5:51] Multiple doctors and experts told me [5:55] that it wouldn't be right or healthy [6:02] for me to keep the baby. [6:06] And so how did Sharon respond? [6:09] He said, you have to do what's right for your body. [6:16] Shiver says she decided to terminate the pregnancy. [6:20] She says she has Pampa disease, [6:22] a muscle disorder that would make [6:23] carrying a pregnancy higher risk. [6:26] Shiver says she eventually ended the affair. [6:28] Though she initially denied the relationship, [6:31] she claims she later reported it to the university. [6:34] The university says it conducted its own investigation. [6:37] They said, you know, [6:38] we're really sorry about everything that you went through. [6:41] We're here to protect you [6:42] and to help you through all of this. [6:46] On December 10th, Moore was abruptly fired. [6:49] Shiver says less than an hour later, [6:51] he showed up at her apartment. [6:53] He does not knock like he said he did. [6:55] He barges in and he's standing like this close to me [6:59] and he's standing over me with his hood on [7:02] and he's crying and he said, you ruined my life. [7:06] Why would you do this to me? [7:10] And then I start backing up [7:12] and then that's when he opens the drawer next to me [7:16] and he grabs the knife. [7:18] So I start backing away. [7:19] And I start backing away [7:22] and he comes at me [7:24] and comes around and comes towards me [7:28] and he said, you ruined my life [7:29] as he's pointing the knives at me. [7:31] And I told him, [7:33] I'm going to call the cops, [7:34] Sharon, you're not supposed to be here. [7:36] He doesn't do anything about it. [7:37] He just continues to come at me. [7:39] Did you fear for your wife? [7:40] Oh my gosh, yes. [7:41] I mean, he's 6'4 [7:43] and he comes in with his hood up [7:46] looking down at me saying, [7:48] I ruined his life, crying. [7:50] She says Moore began to threaten his own life. [7:53] He said, I'm going to kill myself now [7:56] and you're going to watch. [7:58] And then he's in the doorway [8:00] and he like, like, [8:02] like pretends to stab his neck [8:05] and then he then takes them away [8:09] and then throws them on my counter [8:10] and then walks away. [8:12] And then I ran to the door [8:13] and locked it really fast. [8:16] Moore allegedly texted Shiver, [8:18] I hate you [8:18] and my blood is on your hand. [8:21] Around the same time, [8:22] his wife Kelly called 911, [8:24] concerned about his well-being. [8:26] Their kids are hurt in the background. [8:28] 911, where's your emergency? [8:30] I'm worried that my husband's [8:34] going to hurt himself [8:35] and I need, I need you, [8:37] can you guys track his phone? [8:38] Okay, why do you think [8:42] he's trying to hurt himself? [8:43] Because he said that to me. [8:45] Okay, what did he say specifically? [8:47] He said he's trying to, [8:48] he said he's trying to kill himself. [8:51] So what's going on today, man? [8:54] I just got fired. [8:55] I don't want to hurt myself. [8:57] I got beautiful family, kids. [9:00] Police detained Moore, [9:02] the arrest captured in police footage [9:04] obtained by ABC News. [9:05] I'm sorry, anybody. [9:07] Hang on. [9:08] She's trapped in my life, man. [9:11] Hang on. [9:11] I got mad and then I yelled, [9:14] but I did not, [9:15] I did not touch her [9:16] in any way, shape, or form. [9:18] Sharon was brought in [9:19] for a psych evaluation, emotional. [9:21] But like, [9:23] that's all you have to get [9:24] through this for, right? [9:26] Like, that's all you have [9:28] is in a situation, [9:29] so whatever help you need, [9:31] get the help. [9:36] It was on this day [9:37] the world learned of the scandal, [9:39] but Shiver says [9:40] some in university leadership [9:42] knew about it since the beginning. [9:44] Would you say that your relationship [9:45] was a well-kept secret [9:47] or an open secret? [9:48] Open secret. [9:49] You feel that they knew [9:50] about the relationship [9:50] with Sharon all along? [9:51] Yes. [9:52] They knew the things [9:54] that he was doing to me, [9:56] and no one did anything about it. [9:59] It's because they cared more [10:01] about winning football games, [10:03] not having another scandal, [10:04] and trying to protect the head coach. [10:08] And that's how it's always been. [10:10] In a statement, [10:12] the University of Michigan [10:13] says it acted promptly [10:14] to terminate Moore [10:15] as soon as it learned [10:16] about the relationship [10:17] and that it is committed [10:18] to ensuring a professional [10:20] and respectful workplace [10:21] for all members [10:22] of its community. [10:23] For the altercation with Shiver, [10:25] Moore was initially charged [10:26] with felony home invasion, [10:28] misdemeanor stalking, [10:29] and misdemeanor breaking [10:30] and entering. [10:31] But those charges were dropped [10:32] after Moore pleaded [10:33] no contest to misdemeanor charges [10:35] of trespassing [10:36] and malicious use [10:37] of a telecommunications device. [10:39] He was sentenced [10:40] to 18 months probation [10:41] and fined more than $1,000. [10:44] Frankly, Mr. Moore, [10:45] you had no right [10:47] to do what you did. [10:49] Moore's wife, Kelly, [10:50] seated in the courtroom [10:51] as the judge acknowledged her. [10:53] The person, quite frankly, [10:57] Mr. Moore, [10:58] that is saving you [10:59] from the full wrath of this court [11:01] is the one you betrayed. [11:08] Ellen Michaels, Moore's attorney, [11:10] told ABC News simply, [11:12] Sharon Moore has closed this chapter. [11:15] Shiver says she's sharing [11:16] her story now [11:17] in the hopes of helping other women. [11:19] I just want, you know, [11:23] other women [11:23] that are going through this [11:25] to know that [11:26] this doesn't need to happen. [11:27] It doesn't need to go this far.
