[0:00] that you've noticed and taken in around um the facility and being in los angeles here yeah man [0:06] first things first it's it's a blessing to be here and get to sit down and talk to you guys so thank [0:10] you for having me but man walking in the building first thing is like you just notice just the rich [0:15] tradition and the people that have been here before you and you just got to give it's like a [0:19] moment of like happiness you know as a kid you always dreamed of walking across that stage and [0:24] and accomplishing everything you wanted to and so man it just felt good to to walk in the gym and [0:29] look at all the people that came before me and now i'm in their shoes so hi cameron now benjamin [0:37] lawyer with us in the california news group um what was your communication process with the [0:43] lakers before the draft and were they on your radar come drafting yeah no um i i've talked to a couple [0:49] of the guys gotten a lot of love on social media from from la and the people in this community and [0:53] so man it's been very welcoming very warm and very accepting so i'm excited excited to get to work [0:59] first off congratulations kobe price california post kind of long in this question how much [1:07] communication have you been able to have with jj since since being drafted i guess has he been [1:12] able to get to any expectations that he has of you going to summer league or just joining the team [1:17] uh yeah no uh first things first i did talk to him great guy had a great conversation um man i think [1:22] he's just he's excited to get to work just as i am and and get to coach me i'm excited to play for [1:27] him so have i had conversations with him yes he was the first conversation i had that day so [1:31] uh for those who are familiar with your game or like a little bit or just don't know it like [1:42] how would you explain your game on both sides of the ball um i'd probably say explosive um dominant [1:48] i'd like to say i like to dunk the ball athletic plays and uh block a lot of shots and so okay mark [1:58] with you with forms congratulations what do you think it will do for your game to be able to play with [2:02] guys like luca lebron yeah man first things first is learn i mean that's that's a heck of a [2:08] a organization to walk into especially the level of guys that i'm getting to play with and just be [2:14] around every day so just be a sponge as much as possible and just soak up all the information that [2:19] they give and man just learn that's you don't get to wake up and be teammates with them every single [2:24] day so just accept it and learn every single day take it step by step hey cam melissa roland [2:30] with the california post welcome um speaking of learning what are your biggest points of emphasis [2:35] in terms of where you want to learn where you want to grow this summer heading into your first [2:38] season with the lakers yeah um first things first got to put on some weight that's that's [2:42] going to be emphasis being a weight room as much as possible it's gonna be like my second home uh [2:47] and then of course just i mean having great vets in front of you just to look up to and learn from [2:51] and follow in their footsteps and take little things away from them and implement it into your life [2:56] um overall i think it's it's gonna be exciting i know i keep saying it's repetitive but man y'all [3:02] don't understand how how much of a joy it is and and a blessing to be here in this situation so [3:06] just learn and following their footsteps um i'm going to the lakers i'm going to the lakers i think [3:27] it was more it was more of an exciting thing it was it felt surreal it didn't it didn't feel real for the [3:33] first couple minutes that i when i found out but um it was just trying to get my head wrapped around [3:37] this man i'm about to walk across the stage and be an nba player i mean i've dreamed of this my whole [3:42] life especially since i was a kid and so it took a second still trying to get my head wrapped around [3:48] it but just man nothing nothing but excitement and happiness and man just i feel like more motivation to [3:55] work so your dad played in the nba i remember his career in the 90s but what from him um did you get [4:11] as far as like you know getting to this point being um a basketball player and when did you develop your [4:19] own sense of a relationship with what you love the game yeah uh one thing one well first things first i [4:26] can i can accredit him is he kind of let me fall in love with the game of basketball myself and then [4:31] once i finally fell in love with it and found my my why on why i wanted to play basketball then i feel [4:37] like i could go to him with more conversation connection or questions and it made our bond [4:43] stronger um he was a good outlet for me because he's been where i wanted to go and he's been down [4:47] the road i wanted to go and so man he's just been a heck of a person to stand next to and especially in [4:52] tough times that sometimes i don't know where to go man i can lean on him and ask him and so he's [4:57] been he's been a lot of help for me edwin garcia first off welcome to los angeles seeing your film [5:05] you're an elite off ball cutter uh how do you envision being able to do that at this level and [5:10] how do you feel you'll fit in with great passers like reeves and luka dodgy who can kind of feed you [5:15] the ball in those scenarios yeah and lebron james uh i think i mean anytime i can i can just make their [5:21] job easy and cut i'm gonna do that you know i think that's makes their job easy and you know i [5:26] think chemistry that we build over time will it'll only get stronger and hope i can make their job [5:32] just a little easy they just throw it by the basket and i go dunk it for them so my guardian um you [5:40] mentioned that your dad gave you an opportunity to find your why with basketball and kind of discover [5:45] that for yourself what what is your why what did that end up being yeah uh man i think deep down i've [5:52] always wanted to be better than him you know i think it's it's always i've always been like [5:57] behind and so i just want to i want to show that man he's put a lot of work into me and becoming a [6:03] better man and so i feel like the only way i can accredit him and show that i'm thankful for him is by [6:09] putting it to work and using it every single day and so yeah man he's he's he's he's good player man [6:15] he's a heck of a player and so it's it's some big footsteps i gotta follow in a long journey and so [6:19] honestly he's just it's good motivation and in my why i think is it's it's just to be better and [6:26] show people that i'm better than a lot of the people that that are put in front of me i feel [6:30] like that's that's kind of like my chip on my shoulder like the feet or the fire under my feet [6:34] and so that's that's my why okay did you work out here in la in the pre-draft process at all uh no but i [6:41] met with him did you did you meet it with him out here at the combine no but i did meet with him i met [6:46] with him throughout the whole process yes the how do you think it's going to be bending like your [6:53] skills um as you enter the league like obviously you were a primary offensive option you were able [6:58] to do that like have you started to kind of figure out like these are the things that i can do um to [7:05] kind of get on the court right away um yeah first things first is play defense i feel like i gotta show [7:11] that i'm the best defender here and and that's what i'm here to do i feel like yeah i was a primary ball [7:16] handler at baylor but that has not always been my role in high school i was the off ball player i [7:21] mean i had the best point guard in the country elliot cadeau and so he set the table for me he made it [7:25] very easy for me and i feel like now stepping into organization with with people with the same type of [7:30] mindset and abilities it man it only makes my job easier i just gotta cut and dunk the ball for him [7:35] and running transition and so but first things first is is establishing a defensive consistency and showing [7:40] that i can be dominant or or or a plus on the defensive end someone that they would like to guard the [7:46] best player and daniel starkan from lakers nation um i know you played with dalton connect at tennessee [7:54] for a year what's that relationship like and have you spoken with him since you got drafted or asked [7:58] him for advice or anything like that yeah no i feel like i've been in communication with him since my [8:03] freshman year i mean i walked on the campus he was he was a little bit older than me it was just someone i [8:07] i tried to try to copy especially in college i was 17. he was a little bit older he had a better work [8:12] ethic he knew what it took to be successful and so as much as i could take away from him at that [8:17] time i did and yeah man our connection is still strong he's that still my guy so cameron um i'm [8:24] kind of curious about your your road to to being drafted with the lakers i mean you played different [8:28] roles you were a whole bench guy at tennessee and then you have to be a scout team guy at baylor before [8:33] you can play this this last year so what have you learned mentally playing these different roles for a team [8:39] and um now now being uh an nba guy coming up soon yeah i'd probably say the emphasis on opportunity [8:47] um i feel like anytime you get on the court is is your time to show who you are as a player and even [8:51] if that's for 30 seconds or 30 minutes you know just take advantage of be dominant and show what you're [8:57] capable of and yeah i think i'll be able to do that early just showing defensively i'm i'm athletic [9:03] everybody's athletic but i can use my tools to help you know obviously you mentioned your shot [9:13] blocking you know and you also kind of catch logs you know the way a big man kind of does um just um [9:19] how do you feel like those kind of skills you know your your mob threat your your shot blocking can [9:25] kind of translate to this to the next level yeah um like i said earlier everybody's athletic now and [9:30] everybody's long and athletic in the nba so it's just about learning when my time and opportunity is to [9:35] to use those abilities and and of course like i said just learning every single day because i mean [9:40] typical freshman when you walk in or a rookie same thing like when you go into campus the vet looks [9:45] at him like oh i'm gonna get him with shot fakes and do a bunch of stuff so just trying to learn [9:49] why i can be a smarter defender more more impactful that's it thanks cam we're gonna take a couple of [9:56] photos here
