[0:05] This is what you need to know now.
[0:09] Planes shooting from a Delta plane engine as terrified passengers watch from inside the aircraft.
[0:16] The price of gas now hitting $4 a gallon in the U.S., a cost of the war with Iran,
[0:22] as oil infrastructure across the region is hit, including a massive tanker near Dubai.
[0:28] The U.S. Army now reviewing Apache attack helicopters doing a flyby at singer Kid Rock's home.
[0:34] I wasn't expecting any of that, but I thought it was really neat.
[0:36] And a beloved hospital drama, Grey's Anatomy, makes some history.
[0:41] Seriously?
[0:42] We have much more What You Need to Know now.
[0:45] I'm Maggie Rooley from ABC News.
[0:47] It's Tuesday, March 31st.
[0:49] This is What You Need to Know.
[0:50] We'll show you the important Supreme Court decisions that could be announced today
[0:54] and Celine Dion's new comeback announcement.
[0:57] But first, the big story.
[0:59] The war in Iran now triggering another spike in prices at the pump.
[1:03] Gas prices in the U.S. just hit $4 a gallon.
[1:06] It's the highest national average in over three years
[1:09] and the largest monthly increase on record.
[1:12] It's due to the regional turmoil involving the dangerous conditions in the Strait of Hormuz.
[1:17] Kuwait says one of their oil tankers was struck by an Iranian drone off the coast of Dubai.
[1:22] It was reportedly carrying two million barrels of crude oil.
[1:26] Iran's also launching new missiles overnight at Israel.
[1:29] Just a day after this strike on an oil refinery in Haifa,
[1:33] the explosion, followed by a thick black column,
[1:36] has caused the U.S. to see a surge of smoke.
[1:38] President Trump threatening widespread destruction of Iran's energy resources,
[1:41] saying the U.S. will attack Iranian power and water treatment plants
[1:45] unless it opens the Strait of Hormuz soon.
[1:47] But he also says the U.S. is, quote,
[1:49] in serious discussions with a new and more reasonable regime
[1:53] to end our military operations in Iran.
[1:56] They're agreeing with us on the plan.
[1:59] I mean, we asked for 15 things, and for the most part,
[2:02] we're going to be asking for a couple of other things.
[2:05] But Iran insists there are no plans.
[2:07] No direct talks, saying Trump's plan includes, quote,
[2:10] requests that are excessive, unrealistic, and illogical.
[2:13] Rachel pressing the White House on the contradiction.
[2:17] I know the president insists that negotiations are underway.
[2:20] As you just mentioned, he's also said that Iran has agreed to most of the 15 points.
[2:24] We just heard from Iran again.
[2:26] They're saying no negotiations are taking place.
[2:28] They're calling the proposal excessive, unrealistic.
[2:31] How do you explain that discrepancy between the two?
[2:33] I think the American people are smart enough not to take the word of a terrorist regime
[2:38] that has chanted death to America for 47 years.
[2:41] The FBI now says that the man who rammed his truck into a Michigan synagogue earlier this month
[2:46] was inspired by Hezbollah.
[2:48] They say he sent a video to his sister minutes before the attack,
[2:51] acknowledging he was targeting Jews, saying he wanted to, quote,
[2:55] kill as many of them as I possibly can.
[2:58] 150 children were inside the synagogue at the time of the attack.
[3:02] The suspect had family members who were killed in an Israeli strike in Lebanon.
[3:06] Israel said the attacker was,
[3:08] quote,
[3:09] the brother of a Hezbollah commander.
[3:11] National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard also told the Senate committee
[3:14] that the man did have family ties to the terrorist group.
[3:17] The attacker exchanged gunfire with a security guard before fatally shooting himself.
[3:22] Now to a frightening moment on a Delta flight from Sao Paulo headed to Atlanta.
[3:27] Flames erupting from an engine forcing the plane to turn back to the airport for an emergency landing.
[3:33] Trevor Ault has the details.
[3:35] Well, Maggie, this was an extremely frightening scene
[3:37] when the plane hit a window on this Delta flight taking off from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
[3:41] And they had just taken off, only gotten about 4,000 feet up very early on in the flight
[3:46] when they saw those sparks that were shooting out of the left engine.
[3:49] And actually what we know is that some of that debris fell back down near the runway,
[3:53] started some brush fires.
[3:54] But what we're told from experts,
[3:56] this is actually parts of the engine breaking off into the engine itself and burning up.
[4:00] That is designed to work that way when they have this kind of issue,
[4:03] and that allows the plane to continue to then turn around.
[4:06] And that's what the pilots did.
[4:07] They immediately stopped their ascent and switched to an emergency landing.
[4:11] They were in the air for about 10 minutes until they landed safely.
[4:14] Now Delta is apologizing to all of their passengers.
[4:17] They say that the safety of the passengers and the crew, all 286 of them on board, is their top priority.
[4:23] What we've heard from Delta is that this was not caused by a bird strike.
[4:27] They are investigating the cause of this incident as are Brazilian authorities.
[4:31] And in the U.S., long lines that were seen at airports around the country are diminishing.
[4:36] After TSA officers have received their first paychecks in more than a month.
[4:40] But the partial government shutdown continues,
[4:42] with key workers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Coast Guard still not getting paid.
[4:48] This after House Republicans rejected a deal passed by the Senate to fund most of homeland security except for ICE.
[4:55] A high school north of San Antonio is closed today after authorities say a student shot a teacher before fatally shooting himself.
[5:02] The teacher is hospitalized, but there have been no updates on their condition.
[5:06] Police say they are investigating for a possible motive.
[5:09] The school was placed on lockdown as parents rushed to the scene to reunite with their children.
[5:14] Musician Kid Rock is speaking out after posting videos of military helicopters hovering near his Tennessee home on Saturday.
[5:21] Kid Rock, a staunch MAGA supporter of President Trump, is seen standing next to a replica of the Statue of Liberty,
[5:27] clapping and saluting the crew of the Apache attack helicopter before it flies away.
[5:32] They stopped for, I don't know, seconds? A minute?
[5:38] Maybe they were here three, four minutes, you know, just saying what's up, went on.
[5:42] I see them when they fly the schnooks and they go to Nissan Stadium for the football games.
[5:47] They come right over, and if I'm here, I usually make a point, come out and like, you know, give them a what's up.
[5:52] The Army says the helicopters were in the Nashville area for a training exercise, and they are reviewing the incident.
[5:58] The Apaches are a part of the 101st Airborne Division based 60 miles north in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
[6:04] In a statement, the 101st says,
[6:06] Aviators must adhere to strict safety standards, professionalism, and established flight regulations.
[6:11] Appropriate action will be taken if any violations are found.
[6:15] We have much more What You Need to Know.
[6:17] Now to take three, the stories you'll be talking about today.
[6:31] Number three, a 52-year-old Asian elephant escaped her enclosure at a New Mexico zoo.
[6:37] The 8,000-pound elephant, named Alice, made it out through a gate and a bamboo fence.
[6:42] She then had a nice little brief stroll around the zoo, luckily, before it opened to visitors.
[6:46] Zookeepers used recall methods to guide her back, and her enclosure has been repaired and reinforced.
[6:53] Number two, some big news for Grey's Anatomy fans.
