Israel accuses Hezbollah of trying to sabotage ceasefire — BBC News

struck [0:10] positions used by hezbollah militants to launch rockets across the border israel has accused [0:16] hezbollah of trying to sabotage a ceasefire that's been extended for three weeks since march the [0:21] lebanese health authority says more than 2 000 people have been killed in israeli strikes [0:26] and according to the un more than a million have had to leave their homes our middle east [0:31] correspondent hugo bashega reports from southern lebanon she fled her village in fear to beirut [0:42] thinking she would be safe but an israeli airstrike there killed her earlier this month zahra was 26 [0:53] her body was only brought back home and buried two days ago ali her brother came to play verses of the [1:01] quran for her very sad the hardest thing in life is losing someone from your family that's the [1:11] hardest thing there is now a ceasefire but just moments ago we could hear a drone flying overhead [1:19] the war never ends with israel there was a ceasefire agreement but listen you can hear the drones and if [1:26] you stay long enough you can still hear airstrikes there's not really a ceasefire lebanon has been [1:34] devastated by the war and seems unable to stop it israel has continued with its airstrikes saying it is [1:42] targeting hezbollah which for decades has fired rockets into israel and now hezbollah is attacking [1:49] again this village is 10 minutes from what the israeli military calls the yellow line and it isn't safe for [2:00] us to get any closer but that is the part of lebanon that is now occupied by israeli troops and we still [2:09] don't know when or if they're going to pull out homes and hopes lying ruins here nazar takes us to her [2:20] house damaged in the last war and damaged again by this one we don't have nerves anymore i can't take it [2:31] anymore what should we do where should we go we don't want war anymore that's enough we are exhausted [2:48] the ceasefire has been extended but lasting peace is in beirut for us uh and uh you know the idf and hezbollah accuse [3:13] each other of of ceasefire breaches what what more do we know about the israeli strikes yesterday well [3:22] they said that they are targeting hezbollah they've uh hate the area around vintage bail and other areas [3:28] killing at least six people the idf say that they are hezbollah but we've got no confirmation yet [3:35] about who they are the government say six people were killed and this is the second [3:39] uh day where uh you know people are killed during this 10 day ceasefire before it is [3:45] extended on wednesday as well the israelis have killed five people including a prominent journalist [3:52] uh who uh whose death that sparked really anger across the country israel maintains the same line [4:00] that they have the right to prove protect uh israel protects northern border and they need to attack [4:08] hezbollah um operatives or hezbollah structures so that to maintain this uh um safety for their own [4:16] nation hezbollah on its own say they are retaliating to israeli attacks and that's all this whole [4:22] narrative is threatening uh the ceasefire uh despite you know uh the u.s being behind these negotiations and [4:31] the u.s president announcing this extension of three months three weeks uh including announcing that there [4:37] might be a meeting between the lebanese president and the israeli prime minister paving the way for a [4:44] more lasting um ceasefire and a lasting solution between the two countries yes on that i mean what [4:51] are the chances of the those two leaders sitting down anytime soon you know i think we've only heard [4:59] it from uh the u.s president dollars from that you know benjamin netanyahu and joseph on the lebanese [5:06] president are going to meet during the course of the coming three weeks which is the period uh allocated [5:11] for extending the ceasefire there hasn't been any comment from either side whether this is going to [5:17] happen or not but i think that's going to be really um if it happens it's a big breakthrough i mean the [5:23] fact the sheer fact of these direct negotiations happening between the two sides uh you know it only [5:29] happened in 1993 to also find a solution for uh you know the two worrying side uh lebanon has in its own [5:38] law that it is a criminal to deal with israel so to have a peace uh signed with israel knowing that none [5:48] of the um you know countries in the region have had this kind of deal is still really a big shot to look [5:55] ahead but just to secure a lasting ceasefire for the government to have the uh the israelis pulling [6:02] out from the south to have the people the civilians have been displaced to be able to go back to their [6:07] towns and villages despite most of them being flattened with israeli bombardment that's a breakthrough [6:14] and an achievement for the lebanese government and the lebanese people that is still not no con no [6:20] confirmation is going to be achieved so i think you know things are going to take step by step until [6:28] you know you reach an understanding of how the relationship is going to be between the two sides [6:35] and that's only if hezbollah committed to the ceasefire and stopped firing rockets into [6:42] northern israel lena sinjab thank you very much indeed
