'Horrific, shocking' 911 call played in Lindsay Clancy murder trial

[0:00] all right uh court is on a break right now grace um i would imagine i can't can you just talk about [0:07] the feeling inside the courtroom this morning nate it was one of the most shocking shocking [0:17] um recordings i have ever heard um what you heard was patrick clancy's 9-1-1 call [0:26] once he discovers lindsey outside in the backyard lying face up and he sees wounds on her neck [0:35] and he is on the phone with 9-1-1 and at this point he does not realize what has happened to the [0:42] children and so once the 911 once the emergency people the first responders arrive at the house [0:50] he asks them to stay with lindsey while he goes to check on the children so you hear in real time [0:57] just what he is seeing uh as he goes to look for the children because he asks uh lindsey and she's [1:04] still conscious at this point even though she's severely injured uh he asks her where are the [1:09] children and she says in the basement so he goes to check on the children and he had called down to [1:15] the basement and heard nothing uh when he entered the when he first entered the house which is why [1:19] he went upstairs and then found lindsey um downstairs in the basement so you can hear the footsteps going [1:28] down into the basement and then the screaming starts because he can see what's happened to his daughter [1:34] what's happened to his son the the youngest one callan and all you hear is unmitigated horror [1:43] and shock and as he's discovering this he's still on the phone with 9-1-1 and screaming screaming in horror [1:53] in disbelief in disbelief in shock and i can just imagine that he's trying to process this [2:00] as he's on the phone with 9-1-1 and he's screaming to try to get help i guess because the the first [2:07] responders are arriving but no one has a clue as to what's happened to the children until he's [2:13] downstairs and he sees them lying clearly not breathing not responsive and he's desperately [2:21] trying to untie the exercise bands around their necks and he had described them in testimony as um and [2:30] the jurors got to see the exercise bands and he describes how they were tied like when you're tying [2:37] your shoelace but you hadn't gotten to the bow so there was a there wasn't a knot but there was [2:44] certainly um enough of um of a of a uh i guess a a knot to to stretch both sides to strangle them to [2:53] death so um it it was it was just it was just awful i mean there's no other words for it it was shocking [2:59] and um very upsetting and um and of course lindsey reacted for the for you know she had been [3:08] emotional at different times but this time she was clearly distraught and clearly overwrought [3:15] with grief and um an emotion at what she was hearing i'm not sure she had heard the 9-1-1 call before [3:22] today um but surely she heard you know she heard today and was very very upset by it was patrick in [3:31] the courtroom when it was played no no he was excused from the stand and the judge announced that he would [3:38] be excused until later and then they and then what once he was excused from the stand the jurors uh sorry [3:46] the the prosecution displayed the children's clothing and each band there were different bands [3:52] for each child and each band that was used to uh choke the children oh my gosh so he testified [4:02] he testified this morning and then his testimony concluded he left they showed the clothing they [4:08] showed the bands and then they played the call correct yeah and um you said lindsey [4:15] she lost it as the call was being played yes yes she became very distraught you could hear [4:24] whimpering and then just loud sobbing and then as she you know the sobbing was more pronounced towards [4:31] the end of the call and uh she had you know the judge called to recess because she was it was just such [4:38] a very disturbing call it was you know you're hearing him react to seeing his children dead [4:48] and strangled to death in real time and it's just it's just such a disturbing call that um i can understand [4:57] why he did not want that transmitted or broadcast because even at the end of the call you were just [5:03] haunted by his screaming because it was just it was just repeatedly through the call as though with [5:11] each discovery he would he he would launch into this these pained screams and um they were repeated [5:21] throughout the call during the discovery of each child and trying to get the attention of the of the [5:28] first responders and he's still on the phone and they're wondering what the hell is happening because [5:34] you hear you hear the the the uh operators say what's he screaming about and because they don't you [5:41] know they have no idea they're not seeing what he's seeing they just hear didn't he at one point [5:46] say she killed the kids yes yes he yells out she killed the kids because he when he comes down the [5:55] stairs he sees cora first and he sees callan the baby next to her and then he has to he has to look [6:03] for dawson who is inside his office right the the office is is not in the general play area so he discovers [6:11] those two first and then has to go into the office to find dawson his uh second child the jurors were [6:21] told beforehand by the judge to contain their emotions to to keep it together and be focused [6:27] on that the law requires them of that were they able to do that for the most part i think they were [6:35] it you know it was hard not to see um not to sense you know the horror and they the it was just a very [6:44] somber somber time in the courtroom and you know i still hear his screams kind of ringing in my ears and so [6:52] um it it's really hard to put that aside but they will have to when they consider the rest of the [6:57] evidence which i think was um a bit of a relief actually when the judge called for a break you know [7:04] it allowed lindsay to collect herself because when she returned to the courtroom she was composed [7:09] she was wearing her glasses and she was sitting up as she normally um is just kind of sitting up [7:15] straight looking straight ahead and the jurors seemed to be more composed and if any of them had shown [7:21] any kind of reaction i only have a you know a sort of a side view so i don't see all of them [7:28] but i think it was a chance the break was a chance for anyone who was experiencing [7:33] um the you know the horror of it all that they had a chance to compose themselves and and just kind [7:39] of reset all right grace any other observations from court uh it was it was just a very difficult [7:49] time it was clearly when patrick left the stand just before he he he left the stand he was describing [7:57] uh having to talk to lindsay how she responded and having to relive that experience was clearly still [8:06] very very raw for him because his face was flushed he left the courtroom you know with tears in his eyes [8:14] and and his his his body language just expressed trauma and and it was a very very obviously a very [8:22] difficult time for him and for the family you know lindsay's family who was in the courtroom lindsay's parents [8:28] and um and you you just sense you sensed the the the just the devastation did they did they look at [8:39] each other look patrick and lindsay did you notice any i know the other day you said that they there was [8:44] basically no that lindsay looked down was it the same today she looked down but this time her head was in [8:52] her hands and at one point it was the same for patrick who who had his who held his head in his [9:00] hands just as lindsay was i just overcome with with sadness and and and just the the shock i think [9:09] it's still very raw i mean it's been three years since this happened but it's i think it's you know [9:14] having to relive this you know has to be extremely difficult grace is posting updates on what's
