Trump White House press conference: Iran war updates, government shutdown & TSA airport waits

[0:01] Good afternoon, everybody. Good to see all of you. Thanks for coming today, as always. [0:07] We're going to start with some scheduling announcements. This evening, President Trump [0:11] will deliver remarks at Union Station for a political dinner. Tomorrow morning, the President [0:16] will host the second Cabinet meeting of the year and the 11th Cabinet meeting of his second term. [0:22] And later tomorrow afternoon, the President will host a Greek Independence Day celebration [0:27] in the East Room. On Friday, the President will celebrate National Agriculture Day, alongside [0:33] nearly 1,000 farmers who are coming in from across the country for the first event of the season on [0:39] the South Lawn, so pray for good weather, to highlight the President's successful policies [0:43] in support of America's farmers, including efforts to lower input costs, open new trade markets, [0:50] bolster the farm safety net, double the death tax exemption, end taxes on rural property loan [0:56] interest, and create a better future for farmers. On Friday, the President will celebrate National [0:57] Agriculture Day alongside nearly 1,000 farmers who are coming in from across the country for the [0:57] first event of the year and the 11th Cabinet meeting of the year. Also, I'm pleased to announce that [1:01] President Trump's meeting and long-awaited meeting with President Xi in China will now take place in [1:07] Beijing on May 14th and 15th. First Lady Melania and President Trump will also host President Xi [1:14] and Madam Peng for a reciprocal visit in Washington, D.C., at a later date to be announced this year. [1:21] Turning to the ongoing military operations in Iran, the United States military continues to decimate [1:27] the terrorist Iranian regime's offensive and defensive capabilities. Just over three weeks in, [1:33] it's abundantly clear that Operation Epic Fury has been a resounding military triumph. More than 9,000 [1:41] enemy targets have been struck to date. Compared to the start of the operation, [1:45] Iran's ballistic missile attacks and drone attacks are down by roughly 90 percent. The [1:51] United States is also annihilating the Iranian regime's navy. We have destroyed more than 140 [1:57] of their naval vessels, including almost 50 mine layers. This is the largest elimination of a navy [2:04] over a three-week period since World War II. Again, let me reiterate, this is the largest [2:10] elimination of a navy on the face of the planet in a three-week period since World War II. We are [2:16] systematically dismantling Iran's defense industrial base, which will prevent future threats to the [2:21] region. Our military also remains laser-focused on eliminating the regime's threat to the free [2:27] flow of energy through the Strait of Hormuz. Over the weekend, we dropped several 5,000-pound bombs [2:34] on an underground facility used to store equipment, including anti-ship cruise missiles and mobile [2:39] missile launchers positioned along the coastline of the Strait. Our military efforts grow more [2:44] successful with each passing day, steadily degrading Iran's ability to terrorize merchant [2:49] ships. For all of these reasons, we are very close to meeting the core objectives of Operation Epic [2:56] Fury and this military mission. Thank you. [2:57] Ms. The mission continues unabated. From the outset, President Trump and the Department [3:01] of War estimated it would take approximately four to six weeks to achieve this critical mission. [3:06] Twenty-five days in, the greatest military the world has ever known is ahead of schedule [3:12] and performing exceptionally. Day by day, the Iranian regime is being crippled [3:17] and their ability to threaten the United States and our allies is being significantly weakened. [3:22] Their ambitions of building a nuclear weapon have also been crushed to an even greater degree, [3:27] than they were in Operation Midnight Hammer in June 2025. [3:32] That's why you're beginning to see the regime look for an exit ramp. [3:35] They recognize they are being crushed. [3:38] Their ability to attack American and ally forces, [3:40] as well as their ability to defend their own territory, [3:43] is dwindling literally hour by hour. [3:46] Following President Trump's powerful threat on Saturday evening, [3:49] it was made clear to the United States that Iran wanted to talk. [3:53] President Trump is willing to listen. [3:55] As President Trump announced on Monday, [3:57] the United States has been engaged over the last three days [4:00] in productive conversations, [4:02] which led the President to temporarily instruct the Department of War [4:05] to postpone planned strikes against Iranian power plants [4:08] and energy infrastructure only. [4:11] The remaining elements of the Iranian regime [4:13] have another opportunity to cooperate with President Trump, [4:17] permanently abandon their nuclear ambitions, [4:19] and cease actively threatening America and our allies. [4:22] But the President's preference is always peace. [4:25] There does not need to be any more death and destruction. [4:28] But if Iran fails to accept the reality of the current moment, [4:31] if they fail to understand that they have been defeated militarily [4:35] and will continue to be, [4:37] President Trump will ensure they are hit harder [4:39] than they have ever been hit before. [4:42] President Trump does not bluff, [4:43] and he is prepared to unleash hell. [4:46] Iran should not miscalculate again. [4:48] Their last miscalculation cost them their senior leadership, [4:51] their Navy, their Air Force, and their air defense system. [4:54] And if they fail to accept the reality of the current moment, [4:55] Iran should not miscalculate again. [4:55] Any violence beyond this point will be because [4:57] the Iranian regime refused to understand [4:59] they have already been defeated [5:01] and refused to come to a deal. [5:03] Here at home, we are now on day 40 [5:06] of the Democrats' shutdown [5:07] of the Department of Homeland Security. [5:09] Democrats in Congress are forcing American travelers [5:12] to wait in hours-long lines at airports across the country, [5:16] robbing TSA officers and other federal workers [5:19] of their hard-earned paychecks [5:20] that they use to feed their families, [5:22] and causing billions of dollars in damage to our economy. [5:25] A father of three recently told CBS News [5:28] that he felt he had no other choice [5:31] but to quit his job as a TSA officer [5:33] and find other work as the Democrats' shutdown of DHS continues. [5:37] This is the quote from the father, [5:39] and I encourage everyone to listen. [5:42] I think the hardest thing is seeing the struggle [5:44] that my wife was going through [5:45] and not trying to bring more stress to her, [5:48] the father of three said, but seeing her cry every night, [5:52] how am I going to feed my family? [5:54] How am I going to survive? [5:55] Thank you. [5:55] For the Democrats in Congress, [5:57] the cruelty of this shutdown is the point. [6:00] Nearly 500 TSA officers have quit [6:03] since the Democrat shutdown began. [6:05] President Trump, to alleviate this pressure, [6:08] made the decision to send some of our amazing ICE agents [6:11] to help alleviate that stress and address the long wait times. [6:14] And for all of the critics of this solution a few days ago [6:17] when it was proposed by the President, [6:19] it is yielding results. [6:20] Wait times have improved since ICE arrived, [6:23] and they are doing everything in their power [6:25] to help their families. [6:25] It is important to take a step back and remember [6:29] why is this even happening in the first place? [6:33] For nearly six weeks, Democrats in Congress [6:35] have kept DHS shut down because they care more [6:38] about illegal aliens than American citizens. [6:41] You have Democrat elected representatives [6:43] in states across the country who are willing to inflict [6:46] massive pain on their own constituents [6:49] to fight for illegal aliens [6:50] who broke our nation's laws to come here. [6:53] In recent days, we saw the deadly consequence, [6:55] of this deranged policy of Democrat open borders [6:58] and an illegal alien first agenda. [7:01] A beautiful 18-year-old girl, Sheridan Gorman, [7:04] she was shot and killed in Chicago last Thursday morning [7:07] while walking in a park with friends. [7:10] The suspect in custody for murdering her [7:12] is a Venezuelan illegal alien who was caught [7:15] and released at the border by the Biden administration [7:19] in May of 2023. [7:20] Why would the Biden administration catch [7:23] and release a Venezuelan illegal alien? [7:23] That's what I want to know. [7:24] Thank you. [7:24] Another illegal alien that is not happening [7:27] anymore under this president. [7:28] But there are still tens of thousands, [7:30] if not millions, of these illegal aliens [7:33] in our country who seek to do harm to innocent Americans [7:36] like this beautiful young woman, whose family will [7:38] now never be the same because of her death. [7:41] To make matters even worse, [7:43] this monster was also released from local custody [7:45] again after a shoplifting arrest [7:48] where? [7:48] In the sanctuary city of Chicago in June of 2023. [7:53] Again. [7:54] Another illegal alien. [7:54] So, that is no longer happening. [7:54] I were absolutely唰 [7:54] American citizen had her life stolen from her because Democrats embrace [7:59] reckless open border policies and reckless sanctuary city policies which [8:04] put criminals back into American communities. How many more Americans have [8:09] to die before the Democrats end this madness? President Trump's position is [8:14] very clear. He wants the federal government opened, he wants the Department [8:18] of Homeland Security funded, and he wants the Democrats shut down to end [8:21] immediately. The president will also continue to call on Democrat leaders in [8:26] sanctuary cities and states like JB Pritzker, where this young beautiful girl [8:31] was murdered, to cooperate with ICE and stop releasing illegal alien criminals [8:35] into American neighborhoods. It is for the safety of every American citizen, [8:40] including all of the people in this room. [8:50] First, [8:51] if the war in Iran continues past this current round of peace talks and with [8:55] thousands of troops on their way to the Middle East, is there a point, either a [8:59] number of ground troops or a number of days, at which the president will [9:02] consider seeking authorization from Congress? [9:04] Well, as you know right now, that formal authorization from Congress is not [9:08] necessary because we're currently in major combat operations in Iran. The [9:13] Department of War and the president, as I said, estimated about a four to six week [9:17] timeline for the full completion of these military combat operations. We're [9:21] on day 25 today. And as a courtesy, nevertheless, the administration did notify Congress, the [9:27] Gang of Eight, ahead of the launch of the operation 25 days ago. And we've also had [9:33] our top national security officials go to Capitol Hill to brief lawmakers, again, out [9:37] of courtesy and out of respect for them. So at this moment, it's unnecessary. But of course, [9:42] the president and this administration will always abide by the law. [9:44] Gabe, do you want to have a follow-up? [9:46] Yes. [9:47] Sure. Go ahead. [9:48] Second question. In my reporting, I speak a lot to young voters, many of whom voted for President Trump. [9:49] And I think it's important to note that President Trump is not the only one who has voted for President Trump. [9:52] And I think it's important to note that President Trump is not the only one who has voted for President Trump for the first time in 2024, hoping to have no more wars and to have lower prices. Now, with the war taking place and with gas prices going up, here's what President Trump's message would be to those voters who kind of swung into his coalition in 2024, but maybe don't feel the administration's going as they had expected. [10:07] President Trump is doing this for you. He's doing this for young people so that we are [10:10] no longer threatened by a rogue terrorist regime in the Middle East that seeks to kill the brave [10:16] men and women who serve in our country in the Middle East, many of them young people [10:20] themselves. [10:21] Many of them young men and women who serve this country honorably in uniform and have [10:24] been threatened, killed, and maimed by the rogue Iranian terrorist regime for 47 years. [10:30] President Trump finally had the courage to step up and do what's right by our national [10:33] security, our homeland security. [10:36] As for the temporary short-term fluctuation in gas prices, the President has said once [10:41] these combat operations are over, this administration is going to continue to unleash American energy [10:47] dominance. [10:48] We're continuing to do that every day, and we're going to see prices at the pump drop [10:51] and go back down, just as we have over the past year because of this President. [10:55] And don't think for one second that if the Democrats had their way, gas prices would [11:00] be as they were under the previous administration, the Biden administration, record highs. [11:05] This President is keeping them as low as he can during this short-term combat operation, [11:10] and they're going to go right back down when this is over. [11:12] Thank you. [11:21] Just within the last couple of hours, there has been a reaction from the White House [11:24] to this plan to end the war. [11:26] What's the White House's response to that? [11:28] And have these talks hit a dead end? [11:30] They have not. [11:31] Talks continue. [11:32] They are productive, as the President said on Monday, and they continue to be. [11:36] However, I saw a 15-point plan that was floated in the media. [11:40] I would caution reporters in this room from reporting about speculative points or speculative [11:46] plans from anonymous sources. [11:48] The White House never confirmed that full plan. [11:50] I read were not entirely factual. [11:52] So I am not going to negotiate on behalf of the President [11:55] here at the podium. [11:56] What I will tell you is these talks are ongoing. [11:58] We're not going to get into the nitty-gritty details [12:01] that have been exchanged between the United States [12:04] and Iran at this time. [12:05] The Press Well, yesterday, the President mentioned [12:06] a very big present that the Iranians had given the U.S. [12:10] He wouldn't go into detail, but was it that ship [12:12] that was carrying two million barrels of oil [12:14] that made it through the state of Hormuz? [12:20] Today, Iraq's government reportedly is planning [12:23] to lodge a protest with the U.S., [12:25] according to The Wall Street Journal. [12:27] There was an attack in Iraq that hit a military clinic, [12:31] killing seven soldiers, reportedly. [12:33] What's the U.S.'s response to that? [12:35] Was the U.S. responsible for that attack? [12:37] Ms. I'll have to check in with the Pentagon on that, [12:39] and we'll get you an answer. [12:41] The Press Thank you, Caroline. [13:15] And today, Philadelphia District Attorney [13:17] Larry Krasner reiterated threats [13:19] to potentially arrest ICE agents [13:22] that were sent in to assist [13:24] with these historically long TSA lines. [13:26] He said, quote, [13:27] the President cannot pardon you. [13:29] Does the President see in Krasner's comments? [13:30] Does he have any response? [13:31] Ms. The President cannot pardon you for what? [13:33] He's talking to the ICE agents [13:35] who are handing out water bottles [13:36] and are helping people move through lines at airports. [13:39] It's a disgraceful comment. [13:40] The men and women of ICE are great people. [13:43] I would encourage this lawmaker whose name I don't know [13:46] and don't care to know to actually sit down and speak with, [13:49] the ICE agents who are on the ground [13:50] doing this important work, [13:52] not just in our nation's airports, [13:54] but again, to remove violent, dangerous, [13:56] illegal alien criminals from our country [13:59] to protect this individual and all of us in this room [14:02] and Americans across the country from murderers, [14:05] pedophiles and rapists who have been allowed into our country [14:08] by Democrat politicians. [15:11] The Press On the negotiations with Iran, [15:13] are there still face-to-face talks planned, [15:16] perhaps in Pakistan? [15:18] And who do you think [15:19] would probably be going? [15:28] Nothing should be deemed official [15:30] until it is announced formally by the White House. [15:32] I would not get ahead of our skis [15:34] on reporting about any talks this week [15:36] and until you hear directly from us. [15:45] Are you expecting that Israel and all the other allies [15:47] will follow whatever agreement is made? [15:57] And in various examples, [16:01] the 12 Day War between Iran and Israel, [16:03] the cease-fire between Israel and Gaza, [16:05] the President has shown a very unique skill [16:08] at getting our allies to get onboard [16:10] with what's in the best interest of the United States, [16:12] but also the world in cases of foreign policy like this. [16:33] And with respect to oil, as you know, [16:35] the administration has taken a number of actions [16:37] to stabilize the markets. [16:38] We directed the U.S. DFC [16:41] to offer reasonably priced political risk insurance [16:44] for takers through the Strait. [16:45] We issued that temporary waiver to allow countries [16:48] to purchase sanctioned Russian oil [16:50] to alleviate global pressures. [16:52] We're working with the IEA to coordinate the release [16:54] of another 400 million barrels. [16:56] We issued that 60-day Jones Day Act waiver. [17:00] And then just today, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, [17:03] if you missed it, in consultation [17:04] with the Department of Energy, [17:06] announced a temporary emergency fuel waiver [17:09] to allow nationwide sales of E15 gasoline [17:12] blended with 15 percent ethanol [17:14] to remove all federal impediments to selling E10 gasoline [17:18] across the country. [17:19] The emergency fuel waiver will temporarily waive [17:21] the summer low volatility requirements [17:23] and blending limitations for gasoline [17:25] to provide additional flexibility [17:27] to the fuel marketplace. [17:28] So as far as tankers through the Strait, [17:30] something we're tracking very closely. [17:31] But obviously, the administration is coming up [17:33] with creative new solutions by the day [17:35] to keep the price of oil stable, [17:37] something the President wants to see. [17:38] And I know Secretary Besant, Secretary Wright, [17:40] Secretary Burgum, EPA Administrator Zeldin [17:43] are all working together closely to find ways to do that. [17:46] The Press The President gave that five-day timeline [17:48] for pause in operations. [17:50] Would a tanker going through the Strait of Hormuz [17:53] be one of the conditions that he would extend that? [17:56] Ms. That's only something the President [17:57] of the United States can answer. [17:58] I won't get ahead of him. [17:59] The Press How about on TSA? [17:59] Can I ask you about the TSA lines? [18:00] Ms. Sure. [18:01] The Press Are the TSA lines that we've all seen [18:03] the video of that from various airports, [18:05] is that going to be what ends the stalemate in Congress [18:08] to get DHS funded? [18:09] Ms. Well, look, it's the Democrats [18:11] who have led to this stalemate over the past six weeks. [18:14] The President and the Republicans' position [18:15] has been very clear. Fund the Department of Home, [18:18] Land, and Security. [18:19] And we've attempted, in good faith, numerous times, [18:22] both the President himself and lawmakers [18:24] on the Republican side on Capitol Hill, [18:26] to go to the Democrats with reasonable offers, [18:29] with real solutions. [18:30] They'll ask for something. [18:31] We'll give them that concession. [18:33] And then they say, oh, wait, that's not enough, actually. [18:35] So I think that's why I said earlier, [18:37] the cruelty is the point. [18:38] They want this chaos. [18:39] They want to distract, I think, [18:40] from the success of our military overseas right now, [18:43] totally obliterating the Iranian regime. [18:46] And it's very unfortunate, [18:48] because the only people that are suffering from this [18:51] are the American people. [18:52] And I hear that Democrats [18:53] might be flying out of town tomorrow. [18:55] How convenient and lovely of them [18:57] that they get to go to the airport [18:59] and that they'll get to go home to their families [19:01] when you have families, TSA workers, who are suffering. [19:04] You have people across the country who are missing flights [19:06] for funerals and for work commitments [19:08] because of Democrat politicians on Capitol Hill. [19:11] Mary, in the back. [19:29] And he wants to see that legislation on his desk [19:32] as soon as Republicans and Democrats can move to pass it. [19:36] But are there any lawmakers in Congress [19:38] that the President is frustrated with on this matter [19:40] and feels could be doing a better job? [19:43] Ms. I think the President wants to see everybody [19:44] on Capitol Hill move faster all the time. [19:47] That he wants everyone in this country [19:48] in this town to work at Trump's speed [19:49] like we do here at the White House. [19:51] Oh, go to Karen. [20:02] And is the President concerned that right now [20:04] there are more than a million people [20:05] who've been displaced and potentially could be [20:07] for a significant amount of time? [20:09] Ms. That's not something I'm in a position [20:10] to comment on for the first question. [20:12] To the second question, of course, [20:13] that's something that would concern the President. [20:15] I think that's why he's again quickly moving to eliminate, [20:18] I think, the President's decision to move to the White House. [20:27] And I know that the President wants to see this, again, [20:29] move as quickly as possible over week [20:30] as we can over the course of the next couple of weeks here. [20:38] If these negotiations are not successful, [20:41] is the only option to reopen the Strait boots on the ground, [20:46] given that all of our allies have essentially said [20:47] that they are unable [20:48] or unwilling to help? [20:55] It's also a decision that would have to be made [20:57] by the Commander-in-Chief, [20:58] and I'm not going to get ahead of him. Vance, what has changed that has made him [21:04] more of an active participant [21:05] in these negotiations with Iran? [21:08] Ms. I don't think anything has changed. [21:09] The Vice President has always been a key member, [21:13] the President's right-hand man, [21:14] and a key member of the President's [21:15] national security team. [21:17] He's been part of these discussions. [21:18] Throughout this entire course of the administration, [21:22] with respect, again, to the 12-day war [21:25] that the President and his national security team [21:27] negotiated a solution to, [21:29] with respect to the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza [21:32] and the release of the hostages, [21:34] which there was a lot of criticism [21:35] that couldn't get done, and it did. [21:37] The Vice President has been by the President's side [21:39] every step of the way, and any reporting otherwise [21:41] is just completely false. [21:43] I see him in the room. [21:44] Again, the President seeks his counsel on all matters, [21:47] both foreign and domestic. [21:48] Who exactly the U.S. is negotiating with in Iran [21:53] and why the U.S. [21:54] and this administration trusts that person? [25:42] The only people in this country who don't support them [25:44] are politicians on Capitol Hill, [25:46] and you all should ask them why they don't [25:48] want voter ID, why they don't want proof of citizenship [25:50] to vote in our nation's elections. [25:52] Again, these are common-sense proposals [25:54] that are wildly popular, [25:56] and the President is willing to use any means necessary [25:58] to get this legislation passed and onto his desk. [26:00] The Press And then on the DHS shutdown, [26:03] do you expect deportations to decrease [26:05] while ICE is in the airports? [26:07] And what are the tradeoffs of having ICE [26:09] in the airports right now? [26:10] Ms. Well, to address this, [26:11] obviously, short-term problem and the chaos [26:14] that has been sowed by these Democrats on Capitol Hill, [26:18] I think it's important to address the lines [26:19] and to get Americans traveling [26:20] and get them to where they need to be. [26:22] So, the President, I think this was a creative solution, [26:25] again, that was criticized. [26:26] But we have seen wait times decrease, [26:29] not as much as we'd like. [26:30] Hopefully, they will continue to, [26:31] but at major airports over the course of the last few days, [26:34] as ICE has been facilitating with travelers in these airports.
