[0:00] just a warning before we get started this episode contains graphic descriptions of violence and [0:06] strong language almost two months after sarah disappeared detective weisbrot got an unexpected [0:18] call from belmar police they had someone who said he thinks he knows what happened [0:24] to sarah we need to talk to this person immediately a former classmate of sarah's [0:31] anthony curry came forward out of the blue saying he possibly had information about sarah's [0:37] disappearance they only questioned me about what i knew i was just trying to get it off my chip [0:43] like get it out and like get it in you know when he went to the police about liam in 2017 [0:50] anthony was an aspiring filmmaker he had a square jawline bushy straight eyebrows and long curly [0:57] brown hair he was living in brooklyn but had grown up in neptune city not far from the jersey shore [1:04] he graduated in the same high school class as sarah and liam anthony said he and sarah weren't [1:10] friends but he and liam were close they played music together talked about movies all the time [1:19] i practically lived at his house for like a little bit of time stayed there all the time [1:23] ate dinner with the family anthony told officers that about a week before sarah went missing [1:30] he had a conversation with liam a conversation that he thought they needed to know [1:36] about anthony said he stopped by liam's house at around 11 o'clock on the night of thanksgiving [1:46] to hang out and play video games he said liam told him he'd been drinking throughout the day [1:52] so by the time anthony came over he said liam was a little drunk anthony told police it was [1:58] just the two of them liam's roommate preston taylor wasn't home anthony said they sat on [2:04] bar stools in liam's kitchen cracked open a couple beers and started talking anthony said it wasn't a [2:11] It wasn't unusual for Liam to pitch him movie ideas. [2:15] I make movies. [2:16] I'm a filmmaker. [2:17] He used to tell me ideas all the time about, you know, films I should make and all that [2:22] stuff. [2:24] And he, like, told me about this idea he had to, like, kill this girl. [2:31] That girl was Sarah Stern. [2:34] According to Anthony, Liam told him Sarah found a huge amount of cash, about $50,000. [2:41] So Liam said he was going to her house to help Sarah count the money. [2:46] Anthony noticed how amped up Liam was getting as he kept talking. [2:49] He was, like, hyped. [2:50] He was an energetic kid. [2:51] He would, like, he was, like, watching, like, his performance, like, he would, like, explain [2:57] it in a way that was, like, energetic. [3:00] Then Liam told Anthony how the movie ends. [3:06] Detective Weisbrot again. [3:08] Liam had informed him that he was going to rob her of her money, kill her, and throw [3:13] her remains over the line. [3:14] Belmar Bridge. [3:16] It was a bombshell allegation. [3:19] Anthony was telling investigators that Liam talked about killing Sarah. [3:24] Liam, Sarah's childhood friend, who'd been searching for Sarah and cooperated with police, [3:31] who'd given police an alibi for the time Sarah was killed. [3:35] Before Anthony could fully process what he just heard, he told police Liam laughed and [3:41] said, wouldn't this be a great idea for a movie? [3:47] So Anthony shrugged it all off. [3:49] Besides, he thought Liam was drunk, and that this was just another one of Liam's horror [3:53] movie pitches. [3:54] I was like, yeah, he's a little nuts, but I don't know, I just thought it was a movie. [3:59] Like, he would tell me ideas all the time and that stuff. [4:02] The moment came and went. [4:04] Anthony said the pair moved on to playing Xbox, and Anthony crashed at Liam's place [4:09] that night. [4:10] A week passed, and Anthony never gave Liam's movie pitch a second thought, until he saw [4:16] a bunch of posts pop up on his social media feed. [4:20] They all said, Sarah Stern, missing, car last seen on the Route 35 bridge, whereabouts [4:30] unknown. [4:31] Anthony's mind started to race. [4:35] He told police he was shocked and somewhat in denial. [4:39] There was no way his friend could have actually killed someone. [4:43] Liam was drunk. [4:44] They were just messing around. [4:46] His funny, lighthearted friend wasn't capable of something so evil, right? [4:55] According to investigators, Anthony realized this crazy movie idea might have been some [5:01] kind of plan when he got a chilling Snapchat message from Liam. [5:06] Liam asked him, did you talk to the police? [5:14] From ABC Audio and 2020, I'm Juju Chang, and this is Bridge of Lies. [5:23] Anthony told police that Liam messaged him on Snapchat in January 2017, almost two months, [5:36] two months after Sarah disappeared, asking if cops had talked to him. [5:42] Anthony told him no. [5:43] Liam replied by saying, quote, word. [5:46] They talk to almost everybody I know. [5:49] If they haven't already, they won't. [5:52] The exchange alarmed Anthony enough that he decided to get a record of it. [5:57] On Snapchat, when you open a message, it disappears when you close it. [6:01] And if you screenshot the conversation, the other person would know. [6:06] So Anthony said he took a picture of Liam's message. [6:07] With his digital camera. [6:11] Authorities said Anthony told them the constant messages from Liam didn't stop. [6:15] The two usually talked or texted. [6:18] But Liam kept reaching out over Snapchat. [6:20] He wanted to get together with Anthony in person. [6:24] And he was persistent. [6:25] Anthony said he just kept telling Liam that he was busy or working. [6:36] But the truth is, investigators said Anthony was terrified. [6:41] He couldn't sleep. [6:42] Or eat. [6:43] He kept thinking, if Liam really did hurt Sarah, who's to say Liam wouldn't come after [6:49] him? [6:58] There hadn't been any new movement on Sarah's case in weeks. [7:02] And police were desperate for any new leads. [7:05] But when Anthony came forward with this story, well over a month after she went missing, [7:10] investigators admitted that it sounded too much. [7:11] It sounded too much. [7:12] It sounded too crazy to be true. [7:15] Someone's saying that he told me he was going to kill her before he killed her. [7:20] And we're looking at it investigatively and knowing that she's missing. [7:24] It's obviously something that it sounds a little far-fetched. [7:29] That's Chris Decker. [7:30] He's an assistant prosecutor for Monmouth County who got assigned to Sarah's case. [7:35] As wild as Anthony's story sounded, could it be true? [7:42] Investigators noted how specific and detailed Anthony's story was. [7:45] Like how he said Liam told him Sarah found the money in an orange envelope and had a [7:52] safe at a bank in Bradley Beach. [7:55] But it was Anthony's demeanor that really convinced Detective Weisbrot that his allegations [8:01] might be the real deal. [8:05] He was scared. [8:06] He was scared. [8:07] And Liam was aggressively trying to communicate with him more, wanting to see him. [8:11] And that bothered Anthony. [8:15] Investigators decided to take a chance on Anthony's story. [8:16] And they did. [8:17] Because it was basically his word against Liam's. [8:21] They needed to prove that Anthony was telling the truth. [8:24] So they asked him if he was willing to go undercover. [8:29] You can't hide the truth on a wire. [8:31] You know, if he's saying Liam told me these things, and then he gets into a car wearing [8:36] a wire recording device with him, and he brings it up, it's going to be completely clear whether [8:41] or not the kid's telling the truth. [8:44] With Anthony's help, police were hoping to record Liam implicitly. [8:48] Now, it seems like a close call. [8:50] They knew the problem was that they would not be able to protect him. [8:55] I think it was a good way to get people to identify whether or not the kid was telling [8:58] the truth. [8:59] But it was a very effective way of putting that to the side. [9:01] Suspicion, and this could be very dangerous to him. [9:03] If he was going to tell the truth, then he couldn't have it 100 percent. [9:08] He would not be able to tell if the kid's name is Anthony. [9:11] But it would be a good way to help him find out whether or not the kid is him. [9:18] But an unboxing for you. [9:19] All right. [9:20] and asked him to call Liam on a recorded line. [9:24] Anthony was going to try to get Liam to talk about Sarah's murder. [9:29] This is Detective David Sidorakis of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office [9:33] Narcotics Strike Force Electronic Surveillance Unit. [9:35] Purpose of this recording device is to electronically record a conversation [9:38] between Anthony Curry and Liam McIntasney. [9:41] For voice identification purposes, Anthony Curry, would you please state your name? [9:45] Anthony Curry. [9:47] It's been almost a month since the two friends have talked on the phone. [9:51] Hey, how you doing? How you doing? [10:01] Anthony's voice is calm and controlled. [10:04] He even laughs at one of Liam's quips. [10:07] For a few minutes, it sounds like a normal conversation between friends. [10:11] But in reality, police are closely listening to every word. [10:16] And they have a plan. [10:18] The ruse is that Anthony needs money. [10:21] His camera broke and he doesn't have the money to replace it. [10:24] Anthony's in a real bind. [10:26] So he asks Liam for help. [10:28] I got a shoe. [10:30] On Thursday, I'm like, I have like no cash to pay for anything. [10:34] You know, so you can like spot me some cash from that girl's money, right? [10:40] Anthony says that girl. [10:43] The hope is that this will get Liam to talk about Sarah. [10:47] Liam pauses. [10:53] Liam doesn't want to talk about it on the phone. [11:00] But Anthony presses on. [11:02] How much? [11:03] Like, do you have like anything left from it or not? [11:07] Yeah. [11:08] Liam shuts Anthony down again. [11:18] He does. [11:20] He doesn't elaborate. [11:22] And this time, Anthony backs off. [11:25] For a second, the two envision what their future in Hollywood could look like. [11:29] Anthony jokes that Liam will be his Leonardo DiCaprio. [11:33] They say in two years, they'll make the move. [11:37] Liam breaks from the daydream to ask Anthony when he's free. [11:41] He wants to meet up. [11:42] So before the two hang up, they make tentative plans for later that week. [11:47] All right, boss. [11:47] I'll talk to you later. [11:48] All right. [11:49] Yeah. [11:49] Later. [11:51] The phone call. [11:52] Obviously. [11:53] There is no significant, you know, admission on that phone call. [11:59] Assistant prosecutor Chris Decker says they didn't get a confession, but it was a start. [12:05] Other than it's abundantly clear when they're talking about him borrowing some of that girl's money that Liam is absolutely not denying it. [12:16] All he continues to say is that I want to talk about it on the phone. [12:19] We got to meet in person. [12:20] According to investigators, shortly after the two got off the phone. [12:25] Liam messaged Anthony and detectives saw an opportunity to meet that night. [12:30] Anthony told him that he found someone in Neptune who could sell him a new camera, so he'll be in town that evening. [12:38] Once again, Liam said he can't loan Anthony the money. [12:42] He said, quote, My cash is low quality. [12:45] They wouldn't take it. [12:46] You understand how serious my situation is. [12:49] I can't say anything on my phone. [12:52] They settled on a time and place. [12:55] 11 p.m. [12:57] Bradley Beach, a Jersey Shore town just east of Neptune. [13:01] A face to face meeting between two friends and investigators are ready to record every word. [13:07] It's 1030 on the night of January 31st. [13:32] Law enforcement from multiple agencies are gathered, hoping tonight is the night they finally break the case wide open. [13:39] They've given Anthony a clear mission. [13:42] Get Liam to confess to Sarah's murder and don't get caught. [13:55] It's late. [13:56] And the streets are quiet as Anthony makes his way to the spot where he and Liam agreed to meet. [14:02] Detectives have bugged Anthony's car with recording devices, including a camera hidden behind the steering wheel. [14:10] On the recording, we see glimpses of Anthony's hand on the wheel, but it's clearly angled to focus on the person soon to occupy the empty passenger seat. [14:21] The camera quality isn't high definition and the dark cabin of the car doesn't help. [14:26] Anthony's windows are smudged or foggy in a way that makes the outside world a blur. [14:32] We only see glimpses of the homes and businesses he passes by, spotlit by the yellow street lights. [14:40] Anthony's feeling a bit tortured about the situation he's found himself in. [14:44] What made me decide to do it? [14:46] I don't know. [14:47] Went outside, smoked a cigarette, thought about it for a second, and I was like, all right, let's do it. [14:53] It sucks, you know, whether, you know, he's still your friend, whether he did something second. [14:57] You know, it's still just a tough situation. [14:58] It's tough. [14:59] It's just tough. [15:00] This operation depends on Anthony acting natural. [15:05] That means detectives, for their part, don't want to overcomplicate an already stressful situation. [15:12] Anthony is just catching up with a friend, only with an added objective. [15:18] They did say, you know, you got to act sort of like Donnie Brasco. [15:22] You got to ask him questions. [15:23] Ever the film buff, Anthony takes the inspiration seriously, channeling the 90s film starring Johnny Depp as an undercover cop. [15:32] He turns the radio on and tunes it to a rock station. [15:41] Rockin' Me by Steve Miller Band comes on. [15:54] Anthony sings along. [15:56] He says he sings when he's nervous. [15:59] The lyrics are strangely befitting for the moment. [16:03] Don't get suspicious. [16:06] Now, don't be suspicious. [16:08] You know you are a friend of mine. [16:10] You know what was weird about that song, too? [16:11] Me and him used to play that song in a band together, and that was on the radio when I was driving there. [16:19] It's weird. [16:20] It's bizarre. [16:21] There's a lot riding on this operation, including Anthony's safety. [16:27] Detectives are hiding in a vehicle just around the corner from the meeting spot. [16:31] We were listening live through electronic equipment, and we did that to maintain the integrity of the recording, and also Paramount was safety. [16:40] Anthony's safety was of great concern to us at that time. [16:45] They'll be close, but not that close. [16:48] If things escalated or even turned violent. [16:51] It's possible there isn't much they can do. [16:55] In other words, Anthony is on his own. [16:58] Classic rock show. [17:11] Back in the car, Anthony is almost at the meeting spot. [17:14] It's a place where he and Liam would often hang out in their cars and talk. [17:19] A quiet street with a nice view of the ocean. [17:23] Assistant prosecutor Chris Decker. [17:25] It was a place where the two of them, I guess, had hung out before on Ocean Avenue in Bradley Beach. [17:30] You know, parked, they're pulling head on facing the ocean. [17:33] There's no one around. [17:34] It's almost 11 o'clock at night. [17:36] I mean, it's pretty desolate in the middle of the winter. [17:40] Anthony finds a spot, parks, and turns the radio down. [17:44] And, you know, that's ultimately where Liam enters Anthony Curry's car. [17:51] How you doing? [17:56] How you doing? [17:57] You want a cigarette? [17:58] Nah, I'm good. I quit that . [17:59] I was smoking. [18:01] What were you doing? [18:02] Liam makes himself comfortable in the passenger seat and closes the door. [18:06] He's got a thick workman's jacket on, zipped to the top. [18:09] It's a cold winter's jacket. [18:10] It's a cold winter's night. [18:12] He seems happy to see Anthony. [18:14] It's a familiar scene for the old friends. [18:18] But for Anthony, nothing is the same. [18:21] Liam feels like a stranger. [18:24] But Anthony is a different person, too. [18:26] He's now a double agent, working with the police. [18:30] It's a high-stakes gamble. [18:32] Anthony knows this hangout might put his friend behind bars. [18:36] Not to mention the danger Anthony could be putting himself in, [18:39] sitting alone in a car, [18:41] with a suspected killer. [18:43] But he thinks it's the right thing to do, [18:47] for Sarah and her family. [18:49] Their greeting is normal enough, [18:57] until it's not. [18:59] Dude, you can't blame me for doing this, right? [19:04] I gotta fill you up real quick. [19:06] Alright? [19:08] You good? [19:10] No disrespect. [19:11] I'll show you. [19:12] No disrespect, okay? [19:13] Nothing. [19:15] As soon as he got in the car, he patted him down for a wire. [19:18] Highly alarming. [19:20] Why is he patting him down for a wire? [19:23] Yeah, I got the FBI on my ass, dude. [19:26] What, are they questioning you? [19:27] Oh yeah, a lot. [19:28] About what? [19:30] About killing Sarah. [19:31] Less than a minute into sitting in Anthony's car, [19:36] Liam's getting straight to Sarah's death. [19:40] He goes on, saying he's been laying low. [19:43] Police have been interrogating him. [19:45] But Liam says everything is going exactly as expected. [19:50] But I had planned Sarah's situation for me to be interrogated by cops. [19:57] Like, that was the whole part of my plan, to make me look not guilty. [20:02] He planned to be questioned by the police after Sarah's disappearance. [20:08] He wanted them to. [20:10] And he was confident in the story he had to tell law enforcement. [20:14] Unprompted, Liam goes back to that December night he was last with Sarah. [20:19] And without hesitation, Liam tells Anthony what investigators have been hoping to hear. [20:27] Dude. [20:30] So, I'm hanging out with her. [20:34] She has, we went to the bank, she took some money out, not all of her money. [20:38] We're counting it out, and then she goes to walk out the front door. [20:45] I choke her out, drag her. [20:49] My biggest problem was the dog. [20:51] And her dog laid there and watched as I killed her. [20:54] Didn't do anything. [20:57] Her dog. [20:58] Remember, Buddy was Sarah's foxtound, her best friend. [21:03] When police first visited the house after she went missing, [21:06] Buddy was locked in a cage. [21:08] It struck her friends as one of the first signs something wasn't right. [21:12] Sarah never locked him up. [21:14] More details come pouring out of Liam. [21:17] I pretty much hung her, like, I picked her up and had her just, like, dangling off the ground. [21:26] And she just pissed herself and said my name, and then that was it. [21:32] On the camera footage, you can see Liam bringing his arm up, [21:41] showing Anthony how he wrapped his arm around Sarah's neck. [21:45] He says it took him half an hour to kill her. [21:49] I thought I was going to be able to choke her out and have her out in, like, a couple minutes. [21:55] I choked her out, and then she was just laying there having a seizure or something. [22:00] So then I just, I got a shirt and I just shoved it down her throat so she wouldn't throw up or anything [22:07] and held my finger over her nose and set a timer. [22:12] That's the only time I had my phone. [22:14] And it took me, like, a half an hour after I hit start. [22:18] Only time. [22:19] This is the thing about, like, heists. [22:25] There's so much you can't account for. [22:27] You don't know. [22:29] Yeah. [22:30] You don't know until it happens. [22:32] And then the next month was just me getting interrogated by cops over and over and over again. [22:40] Anthony plays it cool as Liam goes on describing his heist, as he calls it. [22:47] Anthony chimes in with an occasional, right or yeah, like a good friend does while listening to a story. [22:54] But Anthony doesn't need to coax Liam. [22:58] The story comes rushing out. [23:00] Listening to Liam, he sounds eager, like he's finally able to talk to someone about what he did and how he got away with it. [23:09] Detectives nearby cannot believe what they're hearing. [23:13] This Liam that they're hearing in the car was not the quiet and concerned friend they spoke to back at the station. [23:20] I have never heard somebody talk about Liam. [23:27] Murdering someone like Liam McIntosh he did. [23:30] I have never heard someone provide such disturbing and cold, chilling and horrific details that he had provided as to what he did to Sarah Stern. [23:42] Then Liam starts to talk about how he got rid of Sarah's body. [23:48] And this is when police get another surprise. [23:52] The worst part is we threw off the bridge and the body never showed up. [24:00] We. [24:03] Liam says we threw Sarah off the bridge, meaning he didn't do it alone. [24:10] Investigators have been down the street listening to Liam tell Anthony how he killed Sarah Stern. [24:25] But he says he didn't do it alone. [24:28] Another one of Sarah's friends helped him. [24:32] Remember when Liam told officers he lost his phone the day Sarah disappeared? [24:37] Liam told Anthony he lost it at Sarah's house. [24:40] I lost it and I couldn't find it. [24:43] So that. [24:44] Why did you take your phone? [24:45] You should have left it in your fucking pocket. [24:47] Dude. [24:48] What were you doing? [24:50] Strangling someone. [24:51] So he called on a friend to help him find his phone and hide Sarah's body. [24:58] But I choke her out, drag her into the back, put her in a bathroom, and then I had to go straight to work. [25:06] So Preston came over, took the body, put it in the bushes. [25:10] Liam says Preston, as in Preston Taylor, his roommate and another friend of Sarah's. [25:17] He knew about Liam's plan and agreed to help move Sarah's body. [25:24] Detective Weisbrot. [25:25] Liam had provided Anthony with very specific information that Preston had assisted him in throwing Sarah over the bridge. [25:33] And then I get off work that night. [25:37] Preston and I go over to her house, take her safe, bring that over to my house before we do anything. [25:44] Then we take her body out of the bushes and drag it over to her back fence. [25:50] And I crawl, get into her car, and I back up. [25:56] There's a security camera across the street. [25:59] So I had to act like her. [26:02] So I backed out exactly like she did and drove off. [26:05] Did you put her in the trunk? [26:06] No, I put her in the passenger seat of her own car. [26:10] From there, as the tape records, Liam tells Anthony the pair drove to the Belmar Bridge in separate cars. [26:18] Liam drove Sarah's silver Oldsmobile. [26:21] Preston drove his own car. [26:23] Liam describes how he positioned Sarah's body to sit up in the passenger seat to look like she was sleeping. [26:31] They used walkie-talkies to communicate. [26:34] Liam even takes one out of his pocket to show Anthony. [26:37] He says the plan was to throw Sarah off the bridge, then jump over the divider where Preston was waiting on the other side and drive off. [26:46] But when they got there, Liam underestimated how much a body could weigh. [26:51] I see like headlights coming. [26:54] I try to get her over, and I can't. [26:56] my leg up. [26:57] So now I'm limping, my leg's up, and there's three cars coming up. [27:01] So I grab her body. [27:03] Dude, I had superhuman strength. [27:05] And I threw it in the car. [27:07] And three cars go by. [27:10] And I'm losing my . [27:11] Because I easily could have been a cop. [27:13] So Liam says Preston drove to his side of the bridge to help. [27:18] And together, they threw Sarah's body off the bridge. [27:26] On the recording, Liam goes on to say, [27:28] he spent six months planning Sarah's murder. [27:31] He mapped out the security cameras in her neighborhood. [27:34] He'd watch how she pulled in and out of her driveway. [27:37] He planned how he would dispose of her body. [27:40] And how he was going to make the police believe they were better friends than they were. [27:45] But what he didn't count on was walking away with so much less money than what he was expecting. [27:52] The worst part of it is, I thought I was walking out 50 grand, 100 grand in my pocket. [27:58] She had one safe. [28:00] And she took money out. [28:02] And she only had 10 grand. [28:04] And this money, I don't know if it was burnt or something. [28:09] It's old money. [28:12] Terrible quality. [28:14] I don't even know if I can put any of it in the bank. [28:17] Not only was it not as much money as he'd hoped, he thought it was basically unusable. [28:24] In the video, you can see Liam lean back in his seat and stare out the windshield. [28:31] He's just told Anthony his biggest secret. [28:34] That he killed his childhood friend for money. [28:39] I don't feel any different that I don't think about it. [28:46] You always think you're going to try these new things and you're going to change. [28:52] It just doesn't do anything. [28:53] It's weird. [28:55] Anthony says it's like a movie. [29:02] It's your life. You might as well make it one. [29:05] What, are you going to live some boring ass life? [29:08] He asks Anthony to keep everything he just told him a secret. [29:16] Liam thinks Anthony and Preston are the only people who know the truth. [29:20] Little does he know, there's a team of investigators listening in. [29:24] Preston doesn't know that you know. [29:27] And if he knows that you know, I don't want him, you know, I don't want there to be a chance. [29:32] I'm not no rat, bro. [29:33] Yeah. [29:34] You don't have to question me. [29:36] I'm in Brooklyn. The cops haven't questioned me. [29:38] I know you're not a rat, but we got to play it safe. [29:42] At this point, there's nothing more to say. [29:46] Anthony got investigators what they needed. [29:49] He's ready to go home and put this all behind him. [29:52] It was good seeing you, bro. [29:55] Yeah. [30:38] He barely asked any questions. [30:40] He didn't have to push or pry. [30:42] It was just a conversation between two good friends. [30:47] I didn't really have to do much work. [30:48] Like, he wanted to tell me, you know? [30:51] I think he wanted to get it off his chest. [30:53] For some reason, he trusted me, and he thought I... [30:59] With Liam gone, the car is suddenly quiet. [31:04] The camera is again recording just an empty passenger seat. [31:08] Anthony grips the steering wheel. [31:22] He put the radio back on.
