At least four killed in school shooting in southern Turkiye, dozens wounded

[0:00] we begin with breaking news coming straight out of turkia because there's been a shooting in a [0:06] secondary school in the southern province of kahraman maras at least four people have been [0:11] reportedly killed let's now go to sinem kosuyoglu who joins us live on the phone from istanbul [0:17] sinem this just happened or come through at least in the last few minutes tell us what's happening [0:22] there exactly sarah the incident happened at 10 30 a 1 30 p.m locals according to turkey at time and [0:32] according to what the kahraman maras the city governor said this is a 13 year old student [0:39] who entered the school with five guns five pistols ones that he probably he's presumed to have [0:50] received through his retired police officer father the boy entered the school building and entered [0:56] two classrooms and started random firing and four killed one of them was a teacher and 20 people [1:04] wounded we don't know the situation of the wounded people whether they are severe or not but this is [1:11] a second incident in two days yesterday a similar incident happened in shanlu urfa severek district [1:17] in south eastern turkey again around a teenage uh he just went inside the school and started random [1:26] shooting with a long uh with a with a shotgun and uh he at the end he killed himself uh currently there's [1:35] a social media information and reactions ongoing about the incident because today teachers were in [1:43] some places teachers were having strikes because this is a security issue uh the families who have [1:49] students going to school they are terrified they are terrified about the security and safety of their [1:54] children the teachers uh they are afraid and everybody is concerned right now people are discussing [2:03] whether the schools are safe or not but this is an interesting series of two incidents because in [2:09] turkey a school shootings is something like a one in a million incidents we can say it's nearly never [2:16] happened uh that's why having two incidents one after the other two consecutive days is an interesting [2:24] uh coincidence and people are now on social media discussing the impact of social media on uh teenagers [2:33] right uh about their psychologies and the interior of ministry had some studies on that recently they [2:40] were trying to get some restrictions on social media for teenage users uh but what we know so far as i [2:47] mentioned a 13 year old student enters inside the school building starts firing he has five pistols and [2:55] uh seven uh seven magazines uh which the uh security officers uh presume that he might have a receipt from his retired uh police officer father's uh inventory uh four uh killed and 20 wounded one of the uh killed is a school teacher [3:12] right and sinem presumably i know you said that this is uh very unusual to have a school shooting let alone two over two consecutive days but uh presumably this will raise many questions [3:25] questions in terms of perhaps gun laws in turkey and children having access to that definitely the gun laws [3:34] are very strict in turkey by the way you can no one can go to a shop buy a gun uh or own it but [3:42] of course uh there are extraordinary situations for instance this teenage boy has a retired police officer father [3:51] and in turkish culture and in turkish culture people like guns but uh it's not something it the gun ownership [3:59] is not a topic uh like it is in the united states uh but within the last couple of years uh with the rise of uh [4:09] moths across turkey especially in big cities like istanbul uh having access to some of those [4:16] uh guns has been uh has been uh has been a problem has been a matter of debate uh but we cannot say that [4:25] turkey has um weak laws when it comes to guns it has it has strong laws so uh definitely these will be [4:35] uh discussed over and over some new measures will be in place uh but more than gun ownership uh like it is [4:43] in the united states i believe we will be seeing more discussions about the impact of social media [4:50] on the teenage psychology and their behaviors uh probably this is going to be the hottest topic for [4:57] turkey uh in the next couple of days or weeks especially after these incidents and of course perhaps [5:04] a discussion on how schools can mitigate that thanks very much sinem kosyoglu reporting on some breaking news [5:09] out of turkey where there's been a school shooting at a secondary school at least four people [5:14] have been reportedly killed and 10 20 rather others are wounded so far
