[0:04] This is what you need to know.
[0:06] Back to Earth, the Artemis II crew successfully splashes down.
[0:10] And what comes next for the astronauts?
[0:13] Inflation is surging to a near two-year high, putting pressure on households.
[0:17] New concerns about artificial intelligence doomsday,
[0:20] the disturbing claims being made about a new AI model and what it could mean for global security.
[0:25] Making way for a smoother commute, the high-tech effort on the road to make potholes disappear.
[0:30] It's one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, and a piece of it could be yours.
[0:35] We have much more What You Need to Know.
[0:38] I'm Rachel Scott from ABC News. This is What You Need to Know.
[0:41] Let's get right to the big story.
[0:43] The Artemis II crew is back here on Earth.
[0:45] They made a successful splashdown off the coast of San Diego
[0:48] following its high-speed re-entry through the Earth's atmosphere.
[0:52] Recovery teams were quickly on scene to bring the crew back safely after the mission.
[0:56] Gio Benitez was watching it all.
[0:58] I'm thinking about this entire journey that they've been on,
[1:01] because they have been on this incredible journey, making history together,
[1:04] but also showing the world how humanity can come together.
[1:09] I mean, from the very beginning, when I spoke with Victor Glover,
[1:12] and I asked him, I said, you know, there's so much division in this world.
[1:15] What is it that you see when you look down on planet Earth?
[1:18] And he said, I saw one humanity.
[1:20] That's what I see. I see one humanity.
[1:22] So I think what's remarkable is they're going to have some time to actually reflect
[1:26] on everything they've just witnessed, everything they've been through together.
[1:30] I mean, imagine being in those tight quarters for 10 days.
[1:34] That's remarkable.
[1:35] They're going to be reflecting on what it is that they just went through.
[1:38] But I think most importantly, they're going to be hugging that family.
[1:41] Now to your money.
[1:42] A new report shows inflation accelerated last month to its highest rate in nearly two years.
[1:47] Elizabeth Schulze breaks it all down.
[1:49] Rachel, this new government report shows the prices you pay are going up for just about everything
[1:53] as the spike in oil translates to higher costs across the economy.
[1:57] Overall, consumer prices surged 3.3% in March compared to a year ago.
[2:02] That is now the fastest inflation rate in nearly two years.
[2:06] Key factor here, rising energy prices.
[2:09] So since the start of the Iran war, gas prices are now up 41%.
[2:14] Diesel is up 51%.
[2:16] And jet fuel up 70%, which is why we are seeing airfare soaring.
[2:21] This report does not yet show a big spike in food costs because of higher oil.
[2:26] We know that many grocers are paying fuel surcharges and they often pass those costs onto shoppers.
[2:31] So that could show up in the months ahead.
[2:34] The big picture here is that higher fuel is just the latest roadblock on the path to lower prices.
[2:41] While eggs are down 45% in the past year, staples like ground beef are up 11%, lettuce up 14%, coffee up 19% in part because of tariffs.
[2:53] Moody's Analytics says that inflation is already costing the typical household an extra $233 per month compared to last year.
[3:02] And they say oil at this level for one year will add on another $1,400 in gas and diesel costs.
[3:09] The potential threat of a powerful new AI model has prompted an urgent meeting at the very top of the U.S. government.
[3:15] Anthropic did not release its Mythos AI model to the public because it says hackers could use it to detect security vulnerabilities in operating systems and web browsers and then launch cyber attacks.
[3:26] Treasury Secretary Scott Besson and Fed Chair Jerome Powell met with the heads of Wall Street banks this week to warn them about the risks.
[3:33] According to Bloomberg, the CEOs of Citigroup Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs were all present.
[3:40] The Treasury Department and the Fed have not yet commented.
[3:44] The husband arrested after the disappearance of a Michigan woman in the Bahamas says he is heartbroken.
[3:49] That's according to his lawyer.
[3:51] 59-year-old Brian Hooker told police his wife Lynette fell off their small boat in bad weather and got swept away.
[3:57] A friend who Brian texted after the incident is now raising questions about Brian's story, saying Brian and Lynette were experienced sailors.
[4:05] Lynette's daughter says the couple's marriage was troubled.
[4:08] Now a police report details an alleged domestic incident in 2015 where Lynette was taken into custody.
[4:14] No charges were filed against her.
[4:16] Brian's lawyer is urging people not to jump to any conclusions.
[4:20] A decades-long serial murder case on New York's Long Island came to an end this week.
[4:25] Rex Heuermann, a suburban dad and New York City architect, had maintained his innocence for a year since his arrest,
[4:31] but he suddenly changed his plea to guilty.
[4:34] Aaron Katursky was in the courtroom.
[4:36] In court, Heuermann repeatedly uttered the word guilty.
[4:39] A slight smirk seemed to be on his face.
[4:41] He's never going to leave prison and he must cooperate with the FBI
[4:45] so investigators can study the mind of a monstrous serial killer.
[4:49] And here's what to watch.
[4:51] Much Impact by Nightline investigates the infamous trailside killer in Northern California.
[4:56] The episode explores how the attacks unfolded and whether there could be more victims.
[5:01] Terror on the Trails is streaming now on Disney+.
[5:04] And we have much more of what you need to know.
[5:17] Now to take three of the stories that you'll be talking about this weekend.
[5:20] At number three, Pope Leo showing off his sporty side,
[5:23] welcoming the Harlem Globetrotters to St. Peter's Square.
[5:26] The Chicago-born pontiff even got a quick lesson on how to spin a basketball on his finger.
[5:32] The Harlem Globetrotters are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year.
[5:37] At number two, Vice President J.D. Vance was in Hungary to lend his support to Prime Minister Victor Orban.
[5:43] On stage at a rally, Vance tried to get Donald Trump on the phone, but it didn't go quite as planned.
[5:49] Let's hope he actually answers.
[5:51] This is going to be very embarrassing.
[5:55] All right, try it one more time.
[6:03] So it turns out President Trump has not set up his voicemail yet.
[6:15] Vance tried again, and the president did, in fact, pick up.
[6:19] At number one, some high-tech help to get rid of potholes.
[6:22] Waymo and Waze are teaming up.
[6:24] The RoboTaxi Company and the navigation app are collecting data about potholes from their cars
[6:29] and offering it to cities so they can repair the roads faster.
[6:33] It's happening in Austin, Atlanta, L.A., Phoenix, and San Francisco, with more cities expected to come.
[6:38] Now to some quick hits, other stories that we are following this weekend.
[6:42] Hawaii doctor Gerhard Koenig has been convicted for an attack on his wife during a hike last year.
[6:48] The jury finding the 47-year-old guilty of attempted manslaughter based on extreme mental or emotional disturbance.
[6:54] After court, the jury foreman explained what led to the decision not to convict Koenig for attempted murder.
[7:00] Mostly the timeline of the incident kind of was a big factor, and then the location of the incident
[7:08] and the reason that they were in that location.
[7:11] We just decided that it wasn't really plausible to attempted murder.
[7:17] Koenig could face up to 20 years in prison, but experts say he's likely to receive 5 to 10 years.
[7:23] He will be sentenced in August.
[7:24] And in Southern California, an arson investigation is underway after a massive fire erupted at a Kimberly-Clark warehouse.
[7:32] That's the consumer giant that produces Kleenex tissues and Huggies diapers.
[7:36] Police arrested a 29-year-old man charging him with felony arson charges.
[7:41] Authorities say he's an employee of a third-party distributor for Kimberly-Clark,
[7:45] adding they're investigating this video posted on a Facebook account.
[7:48] All you had to do was pay us enough to live.
[7:51] There goes your inventory.
[7:51] The roof collapsed into the 1.2 million square foot distribution center with 20 employees inside at the time.
[7:58] No one was injured.
[8:01] And one more thing before you go, a true piece of history going up for sale.
[8:05] When the Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 World Fair, it included a spiral staircase letting visitors climb to the top.
[8:13] It was removed in 1983.
[8:16] Next month, a piece of that staircase will be auctioned.
[8:19] They expect the price to reach over $175,000.
[8:24] And that's what you need to know.
