[0:00] mr president i know you're only five days in has it changed you i don't want to change too much
[0:09] i've had a wonderful life and wonderful success i want to make this a great success for the american
[0:16] people and for the people that put me in this position so i don't want to change too much
[0:22] i can be the most presidential person ever other than possibly the great abe lincoln all right
[0:29] but i can be the most presidential person but i may not be able to do the job nearly as well if i do
[0:35] that your predecessor used to talk often about finishing the day to get to his family upstairs
[0:40] the stairwell's right over here to have dinner with them and i know that the first lady melania
[0:46] has a big job back in new york taking care of yes yes does it make it a lonely place for you at the
[0:51] end of the day no because i end up working longer and that's okay i mean i'm working long hours i
[0:58] mean the country has a lot of problems he says a lot of problems and president trump tonight on
[1:04] the controversial moves he's made already mr president i want to start we're five days in
[1:09] and your campaign promises i know today you plan on signing the order to build the wall correct
[1:14] are you going to direct u.s funds to pay for this wall will american taxpayers pay for the wall
[1:19] ultimately it'll come out of what's happening with mexico we're going to be starting those
[1:24] negotiations relatively soon and we will be in a form reimbursed by mexico which i will pay us back
[1:31] yeah absolutely 100 so the american taxpayer will pay for the wallet first all it is is we'll be
[1:37] reimbursed at a later date from whatever transaction we make from mexico now i could wait a year and i
[1:43] could hold off the wall but i want to build the wall we have to build the wall we have to stop drugs
[1:47] from pouring in we have to stop people from just pouring into our country we have no idea where they're
[1:52] from and i campaigned on the wall and it's very important but that wall will cost us nothing but
[1:57] you talked uh often about mexico paying for the wall and you again say they'll pay us back mexico's
[2:02] president said in recent days that mexico absolutely will not pay adding that it goes against our dignity
[2:07] as a country and our dignity as mexicans he says well i think he has to say that he has to say that
[2:15] but i'm just telling you there will be a payment it will be in a form perhaps a complicated form
[2:21] and you have to understand what i'm doing is good for the united states it's also going to be good
[2:25] for mexico what are you going to say to some of your supporters who might say wait a minute i thought
[2:29] mexico was going to pay for this right at the start well let's say very simply that they are going to
[2:35] pay for it i never said they're going to pay from the start i said mexico will pay for the wall when does
[2:39] construction begin as soon as we can as soon as we can physically do it we're uh within months i would
[2:46] say in months yeah i would say in months certainly planning is starting immediately i want to ask about
[2:50] undocumented immigrants who are here in this country right now they're protected as so-called
[2:54] dreamers the children who were brought here as you know by their parents should they be worried
[2:59] that they could be deported and is there anything you can say to assure them right now that they'll
[3:04] be allowed to stay they shouldn't be very worried they are here illegally they shouldn't be very worried
[3:09] i do have a big heart we're going to take care of everybody we're going to have a very strong border
[3:14] we're going to have a very solid border where you have great people that are here that have done a good
[3:18] job they should be far less worried we'll be coming out with policy on that over the next period of
[3:23] four weeks so mr president will they be allowed to stay i'm going to tell you over the next four weeks
[3:28] i want to ask you about something you said this week right here at the white house you brought in
[3:32] congressional leaders to the white house you spoke at length about the presidential election with them
[3:37] telling them that you lost the popular vote because of millions of illegal votes three to five million
[3:42] illegal votes that would be the biggest electoral fraud in american history where is the evidence
[3:49] of that so let me tell you first of all it was so misrepresented that was supposed to be a
[3:53] confidential meeting and you weren't supposed to go out and talk to the press as soon as you
[3:57] were but the democrats viewed it not as a confidential but you have tweeted about the millions
[4:01] let me assure you and i do and i'm very thanks before and i mean it but just say it was supposed to
[4:06] be a confidential meeting they turned it into a not a company number two the conversation lasted for
[4:11] about a minute they made it somebody said it was like 25 percent of the it wasn't was hardly even
[4:17] discussed i said it and i said it strongly because what's going on with voter fraud is horrible that's
[4:24] number one number two i would have won the popular vote if i was campaigning for the popular vote i would
[4:30] have gone to california where i didn't go at all i would have gone to new york where i didn't campaign at
[4:34] all i would have gone to a couple of places that i didn't go to and i would have won that much easier
[4:40] than winning the electoral hall at college but as you know the electoral college is all that matters
[4:44] it doesn't make any difference with that being said if you look at voter registration you look at the
[4:50] dead people that are registered to vote who vote you look at people that are registered in two states
[4:56] you look at all of these different things that are happening with registration you take a look at those
[5:01] registration for you're going to find and we're going to do an investigation on it three to five
[5:06] million illegal votes we're going to find out but it could very well be that much you have people that
[5:10] are registered who are dead who are illegals who are in two states you have people registered in two
[5:17] states they're registered in in new york and in new jersey they vote twice there are millions of votes
[5:23] in my opinion now i'm going to do an investigation you're now david you're now you're now president of
[5:29] the united states when you say of course and i want the voting process to be legitimate but what
[5:33] i'm asking what i'm asking when you say in your opinion millions of illegal votes that is something
[5:40] that is extremely fundamental to our functioning democracy a fair and free election sure you say
[5:45] you're going to launch an investigation that's done what you have presented so far has been debunked
[5:51] it's been called false i can't look at the pew report i called the author of the pew report last
[5:55] night and he told me that they found no evidence really then why did he write the report he said
[6:00] no evidence of what is wrong then why did he write the report according to pure report then he's
[6:04] then he's groveling again you know i always talk about the reporters that grovel when they want to
[6:08] write something that you want to hear but not necessarily millions of people want to hear or have to
[6:14] hear so you've launched an investigation we're going to launch an investigation to find out
[6:19] and then the next time and and i will say this of those votes cast none of them come to me none of
[6:25] them come to me they would all be for the other side none of them come to me but when you look at
[6:31] the people that are registered dead illegal and two states and some cases maybe three states we have a
[6:38] lot to look into house speaker paul ryan has said i have seen no evidence i have made this very very clear
[6:44] senator lindsey graham saying it's the most inappropriate thing for a president
[6:48] to say without proof he seems obsessed with the idea that he could not have possibly lost the popular
[6:53] vote without cheating and fraud i want to ask you about something bigger here does it matter more
[6:59] now there's nothing bigger there's nothing bigger but it is important because let me just tell you
[7:03] you know what's important millions of people agree with me when i say that if you would have looked
[7:08] on one of the other networks and all of the people that were calling in they're saying we agree with
[7:12] mr trump we agree they're very smart people let me just ask you you did win you're the president
[7:17] you're sitting across from me right now that's true do you think that your words matter more yes
[7:22] very much do you think that that talking about millions of illegal votes is dangerous to this
[7:27] country you're not presenting not at all because many people feel the same way that i do and you
[7:32] don't think it undermines your credibility if there's no not at all because they would they didn't
[7:35] come to me believe me those were hillary votes mr president i just have one more question
[7:39] on this and it's it's it's bigger picture you you took some heat uh after your visit to the cia
[7:44] in front of that hallowed wall 117 stars of those lost at the cia you talked about other things
[7:51] but you also talked about crowd size at the inauguration about the size of your rallies about covers
[7:58] on time magazine and i just want to ask you when does all of that matter just a little less when do
[8:03] you let it roll off your back now that you're the president so i'm glad you asked so i went to
[8:07] the cia my first stop i have great respect for the people and intelligence and cia i'm not i don't
[8:12] have a lot of respect for in particular one of the leaders but that's okay but i have a lot of respect
[8:17] for the people in the cia that speech was a home run that speech if you look at fox okay i'll mention
[8:25] in your network read see what fox said they said it was one of the great speeches they showed the people
[8:30] applauding and screaming and and they were all cia there was nobody somebody was asking sean uh well
[8:36] were they trump people that were we don't have trump people they were cia people that location was given to
[8:41] me mike pence went up before me paid great homage to the wall i then went up paid great homage to the
[8:47] wall i then spoke to the crowd i got a standing ovation you would give the same speech if you went
[8:53] back absolutely people loved it they loved it they gave me a standing ovation for a long period of time
[8:58] they never even sat down most of them during the speech there was love in the room you and other
[9:04] networks covered it very inaccurately i hate to say this to you and you probably won't put it on but
[9:09] turn on fox and see how it was covered and see how people respond to that speech that speech was a
[9:15] good speech and you and a couple of other networks tried to downplay that speech and it was very very
[9:22] unfortunate that you did i am curious about the first full day here at the white house choosing
[9:27] to send the press secretary out into the briefing room summoning reporters to talk about the inaugural
[9:32] crowd size does that send a message to the american people that that's that's more important than some
[9:38] of the very pressing issues part of my whole victory was that the men and women of this country
[9:45] who have been forgotten will never be forgotten again part of that is when they try and demean me
[9:52] unfairly because we had a massive crowd of people we we had a crowd i looked over that sea of people
[9:59] and i said to myself wow and i've seen crowds before big big crowds that was some crowd when i looked
[10:10] at the numbers that happened to come in from all of the various sources we had the biggest audience in
[10:17] the history of inaugural speeches i said the men and women that i was talking to who came out and voted will
[10:25] never be forgotten again therefore i won't allow you or other people like you to demean that crowd and to
[10:33] demean the people that came to washington dc from far away places because they like me but more
[10:41] importantly like what i'm saying when we come back what the president revealed to us about torture and
[10:47] waterboarding you're now the president do you want waterboarding what president trump is now saying
[10:52] tonight already generating headlines and our walk to the white house what it was like being handed the
[10:58] nuclear codes and his new office so we're in the oval office this is the oval office what he shows us
[11:05] and the letter president obama left for president trump when we come back up in this week chicago last
[11:12] night you tweeted about the murder rate in chicago saying if chicago doesn't fix the horrible carnage
[11:17] going on i will send in the feds you will send in the feds what do you mean by carnage you know in my
[11:24] speech i got tremendous from certain people the word carnage it is carnage it's horrible carnage this
[11:30] is afghanistan is not like what's happening in chicago people are being shot left and right
[11:38] thousands of people over a period over a short period of time this year which has just started is worse
[11:45] than last year which was a catastrophe they're not doing the job now if they want help i would love to
[11:53] help them i will send in what we have to send in maybe they're not going to have to be so politically
[11:58] correct maybe they're being overly political correct maybe there's something going on but
[12:03] you can't have those killings going on in chicago chicago is like a war zone chicago is worse than some
[12:09] of the people that you report in some of the places that you report about every night so i will send
[12:14] the middle east you mentioned federal assistance there's federal assistance and then there's sending
[12:18] in the feds i'm just curious will you take action on your own i want them to fix the problem you can't
[12:26] have thousands of people being shot in a city in a country that i happen to be present of maybe it's
[12:34] okay if somebody else is president i want them to fix the problem they have a problem that's very easily
[12:40] fixable they're gonna have to get tougher and stronger and smarter but they got to fix the problem
[12:47] i don't want to have thousands of people shot in a city where essentially i'm the president i love
[12:54] chicago i know chicago and chicago is a great city can be a great city it can't be a great city if people
[13:03] are shot walking down the street for a loaf of bread can't be a great city and if they are unable to fix it
[13:09] that's when you will so far they have been unable it's been going on for years
[13:14] and i wasn't president what's going on so all i'm saying is to the mayor who came up to my office
[13:21] recently i say you have to smarten up and you have to toughen up because you can't let that happen
[13:28] that's a war zone this is a warning i want them to straighten out the problem it's a big problem let me
[13:34] ask you about a new report that you were poised to lift a ban on so-called cia black sites uh prisons
[13:40] around the world that have been used in the past is that true well i'll be talking about that in about
[13:44] two hours are you gonna lift the ban you're gonna see in about two hours tonight we are still waiting
[13:49] for word from the trump white house on any decision involving those so-called black sites the last
[13:55] president president obama said the u.s does not torture will you say that well i have a general
[14:00] who i have great respect for general matters who said i was a little surprised who said he's
[14:06] not a believer in torture uh as you know uh mr pompeo was just approved affirmed by the senate uh
[14:16] he's a fantastic guy he's going to be the head of the cia and you'll have somebody fabulous as opposed
[14:23] to the character that just got out who didn't was not fabulous at all and he will i think do a great job
[14:32] and he is uh you know i haven't gone into great detail uh but i i will tell you i have spoken to
[14:39] others in intelligence and they are big believers in as an example waterboarding you did tell me
[14:48] they say it does work it does work mr president personally mr president you told me during one of
[14:53] the debates that you would bring back waterboarding and a hell of a lot worse i would do what i would
[14:58] do i want to keep our country safe i want to keep our country safe what does that mean when they're
[15:02] shooting when they're chopping off the heads of our people and other people when they're chopping
[15:06] off the heads of people because they happen to be a christian in the middle east when isis is doing
[15:10] things that nobody has ever heard of since medieval times would i feel strongly about waterboarding
[15:17] as far as i'm concerned we have to fight fire with fire now with that being said i'm going with general
[15:23] matters i'm going with my secretary because i think pompeo is going to be phenomenal i'm going to go with
[15:29] what they say but i have spoken as recently as 24 hours ago with people at the highest level of
[15:38] intelligence and i asked them the question does it work does torture work and the answer was yes
[15:46] absolutely you're now the president do you want waterboarding i don't want people to chop off the
[15:51] citizens or anybody's heads in the middle east okay because they're christian or muslim or anything else
[15:58] i don't want look you are old enough to have seen a time that was much different you never saw heads
[16:05] chopped off until a few years ago now they chop them off and they put them on camera and they send them
[16:10] all over the world so we have that and we're not allowed to do anything we're not playing on an even
[16:17] field i will say this i will rely on pompeo and mattis and my group and if they don't want to do that's
[16:25] fine if they do want to do then i will work toward that end i want to do everything within the bounds
[16:31] of what you're allowed to do legally but do i feel it works absolutely i feel it works so you'd be okay
[16:37] when i want to keep no i want to no i will rely on general manners and i'm going to rely on those two
[16:44] people and others and if they don't want to do it it's 100 okay with me do i think it works absolutely
[16:51] we head outside to the colonnade where we discussed what happened shortly after president
[16:56] trump took the oath of office this is the famous walk you've seen so many presidents so many amazing
[17:03] let me ask you right after the oath of office they give you the nuclear codes the biscuit sobering moment
[17:10] when they explain what it represents and the kind of destruction that you're talking about
[17:15] it is a very sobering moment yes it's very very uh very scary in a sense does it keep you up at night
[17:23] no but it's confidence that i'll do the right thing and the right job but it's a very very scary
[17:30] thing every president does get asked though what keeps them awake what's unsettling what has been
[17:39] most unsettling for you now that you're five days in well i think i see a tremendous amount of waste
[17:45] i see a tremendous amount of job opportunities that have been let go for many years and i'm not just
[17:50] talking about president obama i'm talking about for many many years and i was a big big fan of ronald
[17:58] reagan but i was never a big fan on trade with respect to ronald reagan um so i just think we've
[18:04] had years and years of allowing our jobs to be dissipated in this country and there's no reason
[18:11] for it so the economy keeps you up more than terrorism and and homeland security i do it all the
[18:18] same well very important yep terrorism is to me number one because we have to keep people safe most
[18:23] importantly we have to keep people safe but the economy is certainly i mean we have to bring the jobs back i
[18:29] talk the forgotten men and women they're not forgotten anymore because they came out and voted
[18:34] a lot of people you folks didn't know they existed in a true sense everyone's saying where did they all
[18:40] come from was pretty amazing wasn't it when we come back what the president says about plans for
[18:46] sweeping executive action suspending immigration from certain countries this is the muscle band and here
[18:52] at home we ask the president about the millions of americans who are concerned they could lose their
[18:57] health care if obamacare is repealed can you assure those americans watching this right now that they
[19:07] will not lose their health insurance or end up with anything less and the march the more than a
[19:12] million protesters women men children across this country we ask what the president would say to them
[19:18] tonight mr president i want to ask you about refugees you're about to sign a sweeping executive
[19:26] action to suspend immigration this country right are we talking about is this the muscle band we're talking
[19:32] about no it's not the muslim band but it's countries that have tremendous terror and it's countries that
[19:38] people are going to come in and cause us tremendous problems our country has enough problems without
[19:45] allowing people to come in who in many cases or in some cases are looking to do tremendous destruction
[19:52] you look at what's happening i have a whole list you'll be very thrilled you're looking at people
[19:57] that come in in many cases in some cases with evil intentions i don't want that they're isis they're
[20:05] coming under false pretense i don't want that i'm going to be the president of a safe country we have
[20:12] enough problems now i'll absolutely do safe zones in syria for the people i think that europe has made a
[20:18] tremendous mistake by allowing these millions of people to go into germany and various other countries
[20:24] and all you have to do is take a look it's it's a disaster what's happening over there i don't
[20:29] want that to happen here now with that being said uh president obama and hillary clinton have a
[20:35] and carrie have allowed tens of thousands of people into our country the fbi is now investigating more
[20:44] people than ever before having to do with terror they and it's from the group of people that came in so
[20:50] look look our country has a lot of problems believe me i know what the problems are even better than
[20:58] you do they're deep problems they're serious problems we don't need more let me ask you about
[21:05] some of the countries that won't be on the list afghanistan pakistan saudi arabia you're going to see
[21:11] you're going to see we're going to have extreme vetting in all cases and i mean extreme and we're not
[21:17] letting people in if we think there's even a little chance of some problem are you because are you
[21:22] are we are excluding certain countries but for other countries we're going to have extreme vetting
[21:27] it's going to be very hard to come in right now it's very easy to come in it's going to be very very
[21:31] hard i don't want terror in this country you look at what happened in san bernardino you look at what
[21:36] happened all over you look at what happened in the world trade center okay i mean take that as an example
[21:40] are you at all concerned are you at all concerned it's going to cause more anger among muslims around the
[21:45] world there's plenty of anger right now how can you have more you don't think it'll exacerbate
[21:50] the problem david i mean i know you're a sophisticated guy the world is a mess the world is as angry as
[21:59] it gets well you think this is going to cause a little more anger the world is an angry place
[22:06] all of this has happened we went into iraq we shouldn't have gone into iraq we shouldn't have gotten
[22:13] out the way we got out the world is a total mess the world is a mess david you brought
[22:20] up iraq and something you said that could affect american troops in recent days you said we should
[22:25] have kept the oil but okay maybe we'll have another chance what do you mean by that well we should
[22:30] have kept the oil when we got out and you know it's very interesting had we taken the oil you wouldn't
[22:33] have isis because they fuel themselves with the oil that's where they got the money so you believe we
[22:39] can go in and take the oil we should have taken the oil you wouldn't have isis if we took the oil you've
[22:44] heard the critics who say that would break all international law taking the oil but i want to get to the
[22:48] the words that you believe that wait wait can you believe that who are the critics that say that
[22:52] fools let me i don't call them critics i call them fools let me talk about we should have kept excuse
[22:56] me we should have taken the oil and if we took the oil you wouldn't have isis and we would have
[23:03] had wealth we have spent right now six trillion dollars in the middle east and our country is
[23:10] falling apart what got my attention mr president was when you said maybe we'll have another chance
[23:15] well don't let it get your attention too much because we'll see what happens i mean we're going
[23:20] to see what happens you know i told you and i told everybody else that wants to talk when it comes to
[23:24] the military i don't want to discuss things i want to let i want to let the action take place before the
[23:32] talk takes place i watched in mosul when a number of months ago generals and politicians would get up and
[23:40] say we're going into mosul in four months then they'd say we're going in three months two months
[23:45] one months we're going in next week okay and i kept saying to myself gee why do they have to keep
[23:52] talking about going in all right so now they go in and it is tough because they've given the enemy all
[23:58] this time to prepare i don't want to do a lot of talking on the military i want to talk after it's
[24:04] finished not before it starts when we come back the millions of americans who want to know what the
[24:10] replacement will be for obamacare i'm just asking about the people who are nervous and watching you for
[24:15] reassurance here's what i can assure you and later the moment in the oval office president trump
[24:20] revealing the conversation with president obama as they got into the motorcade sharing that ride
[24:26] to the capitol what was that car ride like to the capitol when we come back continues let me ask you
[24:34] mr president about another promise involving obamacare to repeal it and you told the washington
[24:38] post that your plan to replace obamacare will include insurance for everybody that sounds an awful
[24:45] lot like universal coverage going to be what my plan is is that i want to take care of everybody
[24:51] i'm not going to leave the lower 20 percent that can't afford insurance just so you understand people
[24:58] talk about obamacare and i told the republicans this the best thing we can do is nothing for two years let
[25:03] it explode and then we'll go in and we'll do a new plan and and the democrats will vote for it believe me
[25:09] because this year you'll have 150 percent increases last year in arizona 116 percent increase minnesota
[25:15] 60 some odd percent increase and i told them except for one problem i want to get it fixed the best thing
[25:21] i could do as the leader of this country but as wanting to get something approved with support of
[25:29] the democrats if i didn't do anything for two years they'd be begging me to do something but i don't
[25:34] want to do that so just so you understand obamacare is a disaster it's too expensive it's horrible
[25:42] health care it doesn't cover what you have to cover it's a disaster i said to the republican folks and
[25:48] they're terrific folks mitch and paul ryan i said look if you go fast and i'm okay in doing it because
[25:55] it's the right thing to do we want to get good coverage at much less cost i said if you go fast
[26:00] we then own obamacare they're going to put it on us and obamacare is a disaster waiting to explode
[26:07] if you sit back and let it explode it's going to be much easier that's the thing to do but the right
[26:13] thing to do is to get something done now i want to make sure that nobody's dying on the streets when
[26:19] i'm president you've seen the estimate that 18 million americans could lose their health insurance
[26:24] if obamacare is repealed and there is no replacement can you assure those americans watching
[26:30] this right now that they will not lose their health insurance or end up with anything less so
[26:35] nobody ever deducts all the people that have already lost their health insurance that liked it
[26:39] you had millions of people that liked their health insurance and their health care and their doctor
[26:45] and where they went you had millions of people that now aren't insured anymore i'm just asking
[26:50] about the people who are nervous and watching you for reassurance here's what i can assure you
[26:55] we are going to have a better plan much better health care much better service treatment a plan
[27:02] where you can have access to the doctor that you want and the plan that you want we're going to have
[27:07] a much better health care plan at much less money we're going to have an explosion and to do it right
[27:16] sit back let it explode and let the democrats come begging us to help them because it's on them
[27:22] but i don't want to do that i want to give great health care at a much lower cost so no one who has
[27:28] this health insurance through obamacare will lose it or end up with anything when you say no one i think
[27:34] no one ideally in the real world you're talking about millions of people will no one and then you
[27:38] know knowing abc you'll have this one person on television saying how they were hurt okay we want no
[27:47] one we want the answer to be no one but i will say millions of people will be happy right now you
[27:53] have millions and millions and millions of people that are unhappy and as we walk through the white
[27:58] house we asked the president about the voices just outside in washington dc and across the country
[28:04] the more than a million women men and children who marched the day after the inauguration let me just
[28:10] ask you while we're standing outside could you hear the voices from the women's march here in
[28:16] washington we know there were more than a million people who turned out and you are their president
[28:21] now too that's true could you hear them from the white house i couldn't hear them but uh the crowds
[28:25] were large but you're gonna have a large crowd on friday too which is mostly pro-life people you're
[28:30] gonna have a lot of people coming on friday and i will say this and i didn't realize this but i was told
[28:36] you will have a very large crowd of people i don't know as large or larger some people say it's
[28:40] going to be larger pro-life people and they say the press doesn't cover them i don't want to compare
[28:47] crowd sizes no you shouldn't but let me just say what they do say is that the press doesn't cover
[28:52] them we saw the marches around the country and you are their president now do you sense the
[28:56] responsibility to reach out now and to unite them and and for for those women men children who marched
[29:04] who are watching this what would you say to them well i do but i have to also say we just had an election
[29:10] a few weeks ago and they voted in many cases in some cases they didn't vote i imagine and we did have an
[29:18] election with that being said absolutely have responsibility to everybody including people
[29:24] that didn't vote for donald trump totally this is the oval office when we come back president trump
[29:31] takes us into the oval office what moves you the most about this room the president on what he's
[29:35] changed already here and the letter left by president obama and the phone call after reading it when we
[29:42] come back david muir continues so we're in the oval office this is the oval office this is truly one of
[29:52] the great spaces and i bring people in from general motors and from ford and the biggest people and i
[29:59] bring in the labor leaders and people that are in the labor movement and they walk into this room and
[30:05] they just want to take it in they could stand here for an hour just taking it in what moves you the most
[30:11] about this room just the history of it the importance of it what's happened here i actually put some
[30:16] pictures up that i thought would be great some of the paintings that i thought would be really
[30:23] appropriate george washington alexander hamilton thomas jefferson abraham lincoln andrew jackson who
[30:31] a lot of people they compare the campaign of trump with the campaign of you have to go back to 1828
[30:38] but that seems to be a comparison for you know certain obvious reasons but we're standing on some
[30:44] of these up we're standing on ronald reagan's rug this was ronald reagan's and you have a choice you
[30:50] know when you come in they have eight or nine carpets they have different furniture the desk is uh the
[30:57] resolute desk yes that's a resolute desk and this is actually very nice this is actually a couple of
[31:03] things that are interesting this was given to me by one of the combatants that i fought to get
[31:10] here and adams versus jefferson and this book they say this was the most vicious campaign ever for
[31:18] for president until this who gave this to you somebody a combatant and this was the the letter
[31:25] given to me by president obama we saw that image of him the final morning that he was here putting
[31:31] the letter on the desk which was i won't show it to you read it to you but a a just a uh a beautiful
[31:39] letter is there a line you can share that that struck you most there were numerous lines so well
[31:46] written so thoughtful so thoughtful and in the draw you know put in the draw which is a custom but i doubt
[31:55] too many of them were written in this manner he really in fact i called him and thanked him for
[32:02] the thought that was put into that letter i have to say i have looked at a lot of those presidential
[32:06] letters that they have left for the next president right that one looks a lot longer than the ones that
[32:11] i've seen it was long it was complex it was thoughtful it took time to do it and i appreciated
[32:20] it and i called him and thanked him was there something he said in that letter that surprised
[32:25] you well i think nothing that surprised me but it was stated beautifully but that i'm representing a lot
[32:32] of people i'm carrying on a very important tradition just do great job he wants me to do a great job
[32:42] he said something that was very interesting to me he said you know if i thought your healthcare plan was
[32:47] going to be better than his plan obamacare i would support it and i believe he would i believe he
[32:56] would what was that car ride like to the capital when you got into the car the president who was
[33:01] about to leave and you were about to the amazing thing to me and he may say differently is that we
[33:09] i think have sort of a great relationship and yet it was a vicious campaign and vicious things were said
[33:16] by him and by me about each other i mean he said that you know i would never represent the republican
[33:23] party then i won then i will never win and and i said vicious things about him it was a very you know
[33:29] you talk about jefferson and adams this was rough and hillary had a great asset on our side him and
[33:36] michelle who's a phenomenal person but hillary had these two people that were really campaigning big
[33:46] leak in fact i was going out in campaign you know really complaining about i was saying not really
[33:51] fair but to have that kind of vitriol to have that kind of stuff going on and then we're riding
[34:01] in a car together pennsylvania avenue and i'm saying to myself i actually said to him this is a little
[34:08] weird isn't it huh but we really we didn't discuss the negative we only discussed the future and the
[34:14] positive and we really get along well now again he may say differently but i don't think he would we
[34:22] really got along well mr president you bring up hillary clinton you had her stand up at statuary
[34:27] hall yeah and said some very kind things about her she fought hard she fought hard do you think
[34:32] america is done hearing about investigations into hillary clinton i just don't know i mean i i hope so
[34:38] and from my standpoint we want to move on to the future so i hope so i don't know what the status of
[34:44] that is i know it's a lot of very serious stuff but i certainly hope so we have seen the amount of
[34:49] action at this desk already this week right the dow hit 20 000 today right i'm very proud of that
[34:54] very proud of that the business community and the labor community you saw that with the labor leaders
[35:00] that came out one of them said was the single greatest meeting i've ever had with anybody it's
[35:04] the highlight of my life and the dow on top of it just hit 20 000 first time in history i'm very proud
[35:12] of that now we have to go up up up we don't want it to say there that's the challenge mr president
[35:18] that's going to be the challenge but it's gone up a lot since i won don't forget when i won people
[35:25] thought oh maybe it will go down but the business world doesn't think that the business world knows
[35:30] me they don't think that and it was a steady climb and now we just hit a record and a number that's
[35:37] never been hit before so i was very honored by the president then takes us through the west wing
[35:43] to show us the photos they already have on the walls these are some of the pictures that were
[35:48] taken this is the swearing in and the first dance with melania here's a picture of the event here's
[35:56] a picture of the crowd now the audience was the biggest ever but this crowd was massive look how
[36:03] far back it goes this crowd was massive and i would actually take that camera and take your time if you
[36:09] want to know the truth i do want to ask you mr president about this photo right here i saw this moment
[36:13] on inauguration day i saw you put your hand on president obama's back there right as he boarded
[36:19] executive one no longer marine one what did you say to him i saw you smiling there is a warmth look
[36:25] if you see that picture there is a warmth there but that was an incredibly beautiful moment and i've
[36:35] seen it over the years i've seen the good and the bad but the scene of that great machine turning on
[36:40] and lifting off it was really something special he points to an image of his daughter ivanka and his
[36:47] son-in-law jared kushner now a senior advisor to the president is there any chance ivanka might
[36:52] have an office right here in the white house well right now she is just getting settled moved to
[36:57] washington her husband jared very very smart good guy we know he'll have a role he has an office he
[37:02] does and he has an office we'll have to see what happens uh she is a special person she's smart and
[37:09] she's got every quality you can possibly have i don't rule out anything no there's certainly a
[37:14] possibility and jared has been here and he's doing a great job and just before we leave the president
[37:20] tells us he wants to show us just one more image one thing this shows is how far over they go here
[37:26] look look how far this is this goes all the way down here all the way down nobody sees that you don't
[37:32] see that in the pictures but when you look at this tremendous sea of love i call it a sea of love
[37:39] it's really something special that all these people traveled here from all parts of the country maybe the
[37:44] world but all parts of the country hard for them to get here many of these people were the forgotten
[37:50] men and women many of them and they loved what i had to say but more importantly they're going to
[37:56] love the result mr president thank you very much thank you david thank you
