[0:00] jay uh tony jones from uh the athletic um my question is you know what's this summer been like [0:09] uh for you to you know just kind of handle mentally emotionally in terms of you know just [0:15] dealing with upheaval for the first time in your career and you know what's it like now that you [0:21] kind of have some finality with your situation and and that you can move forward um thank you [0:27] what's your name again tony oh first and foremost thank you for having me everybody thank you to [0:33] francis jay community is very important to me so i'm excited to be able to do here my first intro [0:39] to philadelphia um thank you to the organization and um i appreciate everybody that's in the room [0:44] i'm excited to be here and i'm looking forward to the journey um to answer your question uh [0:50] it's been a lot of emotions you know what i mean it's been a a process to be honest i'm still [0:56] processing to some degree just you know one the excitement of coming to a new city new place new [1:03] expectations new energy then also leaving somewhere that you you've been for a very very long time [1:08] like i've been in boston for 10 years i'm 29 years old so i was there a third of my life you know i met [1:16] some some people some lifelong friends and people i'll still be connected to but you know and anything [1:21] that you you know starting something new it's a it's an end of something else so um it's just it's just [1:27] a process just like everybody else has to deal with certain things it's no different but [1:31] um yeah it's just been public so that's the only difference hey jalen back here in the middle hi [1:39] gina mysell from the philadelphia inquire great to see you um you're obviously coming off a career [1:44] season and now you're joining a roster with a lot of expectations now going into this year as you've [1:50] gotten to know some of your new teammates and sort of gone through that sort of processing thing um just [1:56] what do you feel like this team most needs from you both on the court and off the court especially with [2:02] the championship experience that you bring uh i'm not sure completely yet i think we'll figure out [2:08] as uh time goes on as we start to spend time with each other get on the court um and have [2:14] conversations etc but i'm excited to just be myself you know i think that's one thing that i can promise [2:20] the city and the organization um and the coaching staff that i'm gonna come in every single day and be [2:25] myself put my best foot forward um lead with my integrity lead with my my mentality and lead with [2:32] my capacity and my will to win so we'll figure out the x's and those and the ins and outs but winning [2:39] is the is the agenda so that's the first thing that's on my mind hi jalen over here over here adam [2:47] aronson from philly voice you've played against this team more than any other in your career i'm curious [2:52] you sort of alluded to it the process of not just turning the page on your 10 years in boston but [2:58] sort of processing that this team that has been a rival of yours for so long is now where you're [3:03] going to be just what has that sort of been like and how have you sort of processed that aspect of [3:07] it as someone who's competed against this team for so long yeah as someone who's competed against [3:12] philadelphia for a large amount of time one thing i can say is the fan base here is incredible [3:18] like they really get behind the guys it's one of the harder playing arenas to be in you know with [3:23] the intensity level with the engagement so with the the fan um they just you know you could tell [3:31] that they love the the city and the team here so that's the first thing that you notice and then [3:35] other than that the talent level it's always been talented players have come through philadelphia [3:40] um since you know i've been in the league and this team now is no different so um being able to to [3:46] watch some of these guys from afar maxi and b um etc and then developing their careers and even having [3:52] a relationship with them even before i got here you know it's nothing but respect you know some of the [3:57] best players in the league have been in philadelphia and now we're just all coming together so i'm looking [4:02] forward to the journey jalen right here to your right pat gallon from cbs um what has your communication [4:12] been so far with members of the organization joel tyrese um have they i'm sure they've reached out [4:20] to you but uh you know what has that level of communication been and um who reached out first [4:25] who was the first one to get in touch with you after the trade damn who was the first one i i'm not [4:31] even sure when i when i when i first got traded i just threw my phone across the room but uh who was [4:39] first it might have been max i think max he reached out to me first you know he reached out and was like i [4:44] know it's a lot of stuff going on right now um but you know we excited to have you and stuff like [4:49] that maxi and vj was probably around the same time um but uh i would say that what was the other [4:56] question you asked oh yeah we we talk damn near every day almost we got like group chats multiple now [5:06] and we like you know we all trying to figure this thing out lebron is he's active in the group chat so [5:11] uh we just trying to all get on the same page i think everybody you know knows how you know [5:18] incredible the opportunity that we have but we also got to put in the work so you know my focus [5:23] is on is on that putting in the work earning the respect from the city from the coaching staff [5:27] everything like it take time you know so i understand how that process of winning works you [5:33] know you got to build from the foundation and build up you can't skip steps so we're not skipping [5:39] those steps we start early john uh in the back here to your left adam himelsbach with boston globe [5:47] uh you mentioned on your live stream that there was kind of communication from the celtics during [5:52] the process but then something changed and you felt like there was kind of a lack of respect shown [5:56] what what bothered you about how this all transpired uh the whole process but to be honest i don't even [6:04] my mind is so focused on what's in front of me i'm all i'm to be honest i'm moving on you know um [6:10] maybe one day you share the details of kind of how everything transpired and all the moving parts [6:16] that took place in this obviously it's a lot of speculation um i feel no need to chime in on it [6:21] because i'm focused on what's in front of me just aside from um that aspect of it how do you look back [6:27] on your time as a celtic i look back you know i look back at the city of boston and i'm grateful you [6:33] know i've been able to develop as a man as a human being there spent a lot of time in the community a lot of [6:39] time at university studying learning uh figuring out how to approach you know how i wanted to go [6:44] about my philanthropy figure out how to i wanted to approach how to carry myself you know a lot [6:49] of my most important years my most developmental years as a young man i spent in boston i got there [6:54] at 19. you know so i didn't go i didn't do a four-year degree because i left early so i spent time [7:01] you know i got my degree in boston in a sense i spent time there so the relationships are still there [7:06] the connection is still there you know i'm looking forward to continuing my foundation work and as [7:11] well as expanding it um to here to philadelphia but you know i i'm very grateful for my experience [7:18] my tenure in boston 10 years is a perfect cycle perfect number for you know completion so now we [7:25] won a championship um and i have nothing but respect for the city of boston but but now [7:32] it's time to move forward a little bit jalen uh amy fadul mbc sports philadelphia right here [7:39] um a lot was made at the time of you being left off that olympic roster and you even spoke to how [7:45] that kind of fueled you do you feel a similar sentiment after the trade especially maybe when [7:50] you're going to face the celtics this year i said it one more time you're going to face them a couple [7:57] times uh yeah i'm just saying just one day at a time that's all i got uh jalen to your to your left [8:11] in the back over here david murphy with the philadelphia inquire um you're coming into a [8:17] situation where uh obviously joelle's been here for a long time um tyrese is pretty well established [8:24] then you've got you know kind of the king coming over um the dynamics in terms of leadership uh you know [8:31] teammates is that something that will need to be figured out uh you know the question of kind of [8:37] whose team is it yeah i mean to be honest it doesn't have to be anybody's team it just needs to be [8:43] based in respect and work and that's kind of like my approach i want to earn everybody respect and trust [8:48] which take time you know what i mean obviously um it's it's a lot of guys with talent it's egos [8:55] but to win you got to be able to sacrifice you got to be able to you know have trust and [9:00] communication so i want to come in transparent i want to come in with my agenda on the table [9:04] look this is what i'm here to do this is what i want to do i want to win and we kind of can figure [9:09] out how to you know respectfully move around each other um but it takes it takes a level of time to [9:16] develop and earn respect from each other but my approach has always been my work ethic so like being [9:21] the first to the gym being in a film room you know i'm looking forward to learning from lebron [9:26] i'm looking forward to learning from all them get all those guys but you know even lebron just [9:30] everything that he's endured during his career on and off the floor like one of my favorite things [9:35] to do is learn you know i can't wait to just soak up as much information as i can and apply it to myself [9:42] and how would you characterize your your relationship with joel up until now and and what's the [9:47] communication been like uh with you um joel has been good you know me and joel have been friends [9:52] throughout the years have mutual respect you know i know he loves soccer i love soccer so we we talk [9:58] about that a lot and stuff like that um he reached out to when i um got traded he reached out the same [10:05] day you know i talked to him on the phone um so i'm looking forward i'm looking forward to you know [10:10] earning everybody's trust and respect um and grinding and impacting winning that's what i i've done my [10:17] whole career i plan on doing the same thing here jalen right here back right over uh paul hudrick [10:25] liberty ballers welcome to philly uh just you were a guy who was a high draft pick you but you came [10:30] into a contending team in a very competitive situation vj edgecombe is dealing with kind of [10:35] the same thing i guess what allowed you to kind of have success in that environment and what can you [10:40] maybe pass along to him to help him as he kind of navigates that yeah i think vj is in a similar [10:45] situation than maybe that i was a couple years ago when we had like some of those rosters that [10:50] were really uh like stacked with like a decent amount of talent and i looked at it like a learning [10:57] opportunity you know what i mean some of those moments that i learned from back then with the [11:02] players that i played with kyrie irving gordon hayward kimber walker um etc um some of that stuff [11:09] i've benefited from later in my career because i took the time to learn and talk to and and watch they [11:15] work out and see their mentality and their approach take things that they do well and add it to my [11:20] game and just keep an open mind so you know i'm gonna be in vj's all year to just like learn and grow [11:27] you know he's 21 he just turned 21 just you know so he he's got a bright future you know this could be [11:33] a great opportunity for him to learn from a bunch of guys and then also his talent level you know he's [11:39] going he's going to carve out space for himself just because it's talent level alone so i'm excited for [11:44] vj and i'm a fan he killed us in that in that series it was a lot of the other guys we knew [11:50] about but he was a difference maker um a lot of times we played him in those series so um i'm a i'm [11:56] a fan from afar for sure bobby manning sealing us media over here um jalen how would you describe [12:06] characterize your relationship with jason over the last year jason tatum and is that a partnership you [12:12] both wanted to continue before the trade um you know we won a championship together so anybody that [12:19] you win a championship you would think like that's what you know a brotherhood or a lifelong legacy [12:25] would entail um obviously there's ups and downs in any type of relationship for sure but on my end [12:33] it's nothing but respect you know besides when he plays the sixers you know i hope he does well you [12:39] know but other than that you know everything for me is just based in respect have you guys been able [12:45] to talk uh not really hey uh jalen in the middle a little bit to your right um jalen uh kai carlin [12:58] sixers wire i just wanted to really follow up on the vj question i guess how much of it do you take [13:03] upon yourself to maybe be like a mentor to the younger guys like like a vj or or a lebaron adam justin [13:09] these younger guys and do you take that upon yourself at all to kind of be like a veteran mentor [13:13] type of player for them i mean yes and no i mean i just you know coming with the mentality to um [13:21] you know coming with the mentality to impact winning and lead by example you know i'm not [13:26] designated myself as nothing you got to earn that with time and trust and people grab it gravitate [13:32] naturally or they don't but you know my focus is on winning my focus is on you know leading by [13:37] example and you just go from there hi jalen how are you welcome to philly i'm breland from fox 29 [13:46] uh i just wanted to ask you you touched on it a little bit about why we are here but i wanted [13:50] to ask you about the setting for this press conference it's very different from what we're [13:54] used to as media members why was it important for you to be out in the community and really just start [14:00] your career here in philadelphia amongst the people um thank you that's a great question um for me like [14:09] and and people who know my family and i we are rooted in the community um that's base that's our that's [14:16] where we hang our hat is being able to affect other people's lives um i think we're very blessed i think [14:22] we've been able to be able to help our own family and be able to um you know kind of change the course [14:30] of what our our generation or our family name could possibly do but we look forward to being able to [14:35] impact others and being able to to touch families and households that we may never get to see um so being [14:42] here at francis jay is is you know as i'm still getting to learn this community you know i just [14:47] wanted to make it important that this was a important pillar in my in my um in my life and the [14:55] community and the foundation and as i'm getting started on a journey and embarking the journey here [14:59] in philadelphia you know you know the the introduction the first impression is everything so [15:05] i just wanted to let people know in philadelphia that this is something that is important to me [15:10] and my first introduction to the city through my press conference today i think is just an example [15:15] of that so i'm happy to be here and thank you to um to the community for allowing me to to be here and [15:20] hold my space here but i'm looking forward to learning the community meeting some people like-minded [15:26] individuals and um doing some work so you know that's what we're about uh dan hi dan gelson with the [15:43] associated press jalen with so many traditional um high volume scorers on this team i mean you have [15:50] scoring champions you were fourth in the league last year do you feel you're going to have to [15:55] change your approach to how you are going to score is there enough you know the common question is [16:01] there enough ball to go around for four guys who are used to scoring so much is there anything you [16:05] feel like you'll have to do to adapt to uh so many teammates who can score my focus is winning so i mean [16:13] obviously you know other people's focus may be scoring and other my focus is going into every every [16:20] practice every meeting every shoot around every film session is like how do we win night in and [16:25] night out so sometimes that may change sometimes it may look different um but whatever it takes you [16:32] know at no point at this point in my career nothing else is really moves me like i don't really i don't [16:37] care about the outside success i never did um you know what i mean i don't care about the mvp awards or [16:43] the finals mvp none of that stuff really moves me it's nice but the only thing that's gonna move me is [16:48] doing something collectively so a championship so that's what i'm looking forward to um trying [16:53] to start that journey and building tours but you know all the other stuff that comes along with it [16:58] is just a distraction to me like whatever it takes on a night-to-night basis it's like whatever it takes [17:03] hey jalen straight ahead uh mike sealski from the philadelphia inquire this is a franchise that hasn't [17:10] won a championship since 1983 it can be a pretty pressured market and you obviously played in a pretty [17:16] pressured market in boston how do you handle that do you let it in do you shut it out are you aware [17:21] of it you know obviously you you're kind of part of the media too in in the discussion about yourself [17:27] and whatever team you might be on how do you handle that kind of external pressure that comes with [17:32] playing with a team expected to win a championship that's a good question i think at different points [17:37] in my career how i've handled pressure would probably look different at this point now i probably [17:41] ignore a lot of it you know or just like kind of let it just be water under the bridge you know [17:47] my relationship with the media hasn't always been the best you know that's part of the reason why [17:51] i started streaming and stuff like that but um for me how i handle pressure you know i played in boston [17:58] for the last 10 years and like you know the pressure is is high there it's title town they expect [18:03] to win every single year and they're always looking for someone to blame so some of those years it [18:08] was me and you know um so i've i've been through that you know i mean so all i all i come with is [18:15] my work ethic my mentality you know impact on winning and that's just my approach like i come i come with [18:23] nothing else matter just how do we win games uh jalen um tony jones from the athletic again um just if you [18:34] can put yourself in a bird's eyes view because i know you're a player and you're close to this [18:38] um you know can you describe you know philadelphia's off season uh to you in terms of [18:44] you know just the collective and getting you and you know being able to get lebron but also [18:49] you know dean wade and anthony simons just you know everything that you know the front office was [18:55] able to accomplish and you know what were your thoughts on that you know just kind of on the [19:00] collective uh i think they did a great job i think they did a great job uh you know like obviously [19:10] on paper we're excellent i think so we have a lot of talent you know compared to other teams in the [19:15] league but i've been around a long time long enough to know that just what you have on paper don't [19:20] really mean nothing you know doesn't really it can if you put the work in but it also if you allow [19:27] distractions if you allow the media to get into your locker room if you allow certain things and [19:31] the personalities don't work it can be a detriment so i'm i'm i'm aware that you know it could go either [19:37] way it just takes the amount of work and the transparency and the leadership can really guide [19:43] this thing or not so for me i'm just focused on that how can i you know lead with my heart [19:49] lead with my work my mentality you know obviously on paper we look great but like let's all slow down [19:55] and take real work every single day in order to make something like this happen so um for me to work [20:01] has started already um so i'm looking forward to it i'm not i'm not a stranger to work my relationship [20:07] with work is is is is great so i'm looking forward to doing whatever it is i need to do whoever i need [20:13] to talk to to make sure that we get on the same page and that everybody's focused on the same thing [20:18] um because that we do that then we'll be then we'll be where we want to be jaylen gary wash from boston [20:29] globe how difficult have the past six weeks been you were obviously open for i mean the honest trade [20:37] potentially didn't go through then you were kind of dangled out there for a while then people started [20:41] kind of dissecting your game dissecting your personality your impact in the locker room how did [20:47] you deal with that and how difficult was that now are you motivated to change what people think of you [20:53] uh yeah how difficult what's the honest i don't how do i answer that gary i don't know i feel like [21:01] i've dealt with that for a while internally externally you know i mean i just choose to not focus on i [21:08] choose to focus on what i focus on obviously it got to a threshold this offseason that was a little bit [21:14] higher than it's been in the past right where i think people attack my character someone even went [21:20] as far as that i had a disease you know um so it's been a it's been a crazy transition um to be honest [21:27] but none of it is completely surprising you know even though like some of these things were said [21:32] externally you know internally um and through organization and stuff like that there's been [21:39] conversations that you know so to be honest how surprised was i i wasn't that surprised it's just been a [21:45] crazy process and transition and then obviously getting traded to the sixers like somebody that [21:51] you competed against for the last 10 years you know someone that you've just been a rival that [21:57] that was a process too so um it's been a lot of stuff and then having to move your family and move [22:03] places and it's just been it has been a lot but you know people deal with it every day you know people [22:09] have to change relocate you know players you know ain't no i'm not complaining up here i mean i appreciate you [22:15] asking the question but it is what it is so like let's get to it
