Carney Holds Press Conference JUST TO TRIGGER Trump

[0:00] The federal government is looking to invest about $10 billion, more than $10 billion to help expand the port, grow our exports away from the United States by more than 50%, create over 17,000 jobs. [0:16] Donald Trump's tariff strategy rests on a simple assumption. Canada has no real alternatives. Squeeze hard enough, threaten enough industries, and eventually Canada will have no choice but to accept whatever terms Trump demands. [0:31] Mark Carney is now systematically destroying that assumption. Standing at the port of Vancouver, the single most important gateway for Canadian trade with the world, the Prime Minister is advancing a multi-billion dollar expansion designed to do one thing above all else. [0:53] Reduce Canada's vulnerability to American economic pressure, grow non-U.S. exports by more than 50%, create tens of thousands of jobs, build the physical capacity to pivot toward Asia and other markets at scale. [1:10] This is not a symbolic announcement. This is strategic infrastructure being deployed as economic statecraft. [1:18] While Trump uses tariffs as a blunt instrument, Carney is responding with long-term capacity, diversification, and leverage. [1:28] The message is unmistakable. Canada is no longer simply absorbing pressure. It is building the means to withstand it, and eventually to move beyond it. [1:41] Amazing. Okay. Well, good morning, everyone. It's a pleasure to be here at Canada's largest port. [1:49] More than a billion dollars of goods move through this port every single day, and in fact, when you look at the capacity of Port of Vancouver, it's bigger than the capacity of the next five biggest ports in Canada combined. [2:04] But within the next decade, it's not going to be enough. And it's certainly not going to be enough if we're going to grow this economy, become stronger, more independent, more diversified, trade more with Asia and other parts of the world, which is what our intention is to do. [2:21] So, uh, we're looking, um, through the major projects office at expanding this port, but one of the things, if you expand the port, you have, everything's connected. [2:31] So, uh, expanding the port requires, uh, increasing the capacity and the efficiency of our rail system. [2:38] Uh, it also means working to, uh, enhance some of our exports of energy and others. [2:45] And we have tremendous opportunities in order to do that. [2:49] Just look at the ambition. [2:51] Expanding the largest port in the country so it can handle a dramatic increase in non-U.S. trade. [2:58] Growing exports away from the United States by more than 50%, creating over 17,000 construction jobs and another 17,000 long-term jobs. [3:11] This is what real diversification looks like. Not just speeches, but concrete capacity. [3:18] But in order to seize those opportunities, and let's just put it in perspective, uh, the federal government is looking to invest about $10 billion, more than $10 billion, [3:29] to help expand the port, uh, grow our exports away from the United States by more than 50%. [3:36] Uh, create over 17,000 jobs, 18,000 jobs in the construction of that, another 17,000 jobs, uh, full-time, uh, in the operation of that additional capacity. [3:48] And that's not counting all the businesses and the knock-on effects. [3:51] In fact, I was at a canola farm, uh, yesterday, uh, just north of Venice Vale in, in Alberta, uh, where they will get the benefit of this expanded capacity as we expand agriculture exports as well as, uh, products and others. [4:05] Okay. So, that's the opportunity. [4:08] But everything is connected. And in order to seize the opportunity, we need to do several things at the same time. [4:14] And that's our intention. Uh, and that's why we're working with the Musqueam Nation. Uh, we're working with Tawasun First Nation. [4:23] We're working with the Squamish First Nation, the Seletooth First Nation. Uh, this is, uh, uh, unceded, uh, territory, uh, and traditional lands. [4:33] Uh, there are treaty rights, uh, from, uh, the First Nations. And we need to work in a way that is building inclusively, uh, with Indigenous partners, [4:42] sharing in the economic benefits, ensuring that the incredible natural resources we have, heritage, patrimony, uh, is not just preserved, but enhanced. [4:55] Um, so the federal government has been investing hundreds of millions of dollars, uh, to protect our whales, including the south, uh, uh, southern resident, uh, killer whales just off there. [5:06] Uh, hundreds of millions of dollars coming to, uh, with a part of the Pacific, uh, salmon strategy. [5:12] Um, three and a half billion dollars for our broader ocean protection strategy. Uh, but as important is working directly, uh, with First Nations, uh, who managing, uh, these, uh, these habitats, uh, respecting their traditional rights, uh, and creating economic opportunity for them. [5:35] So that means housing, uh, that means fully participating in the expansions here. [5:40] It also means, um, uh, developing new ways of the partnerships, uh, between us. [5:48] And I'd like to, uh, I'd like to thank, uh, Chief, uh, Laura Cassidy of the Tawasun First Nation, uh, for being here. [5:56] We can see, uh, her home. [5:57] We can see, uh, her home. [5:58] We can see Tawasun, uh, if you look over your shoulders, uh, just there. [6:01] Uh, and I'd also, uh, like to thank, uh, Chief Wayne Sparrow of the Musqueam, uh, for being here. [6:06] And, of course, uh, full respect, uh, to, uh, the other leaders of the other First Nations that we've been meeting with in discussions of how to move this, uh, forward, uh, together. [6:15] It is a tremendous opportunity, uh, to build Canada strong, uh, to build Canada sustainable, to make our country more independent, more resilient, [6:24] and to do it in the right way, to do it inclusively, to do it in solidarity, uh, with those workers, uh, over there, uh, creating good union jobs. [6:32] Uh, tens of thousands of good union jobs, not just here, but across the country. [6:37] And Carney is clear that this cannot be done in isolation. [6:40] Expanding the port means expanding rail. [6:43] It means moving more energy and agricultural products. [6:48] It means doing it in full partnership with First Nations whose traditional lands are involved. [6:54] Housing, economic participation, environmental protection, and good union jobs are all part of the same strategy. [7:03] This is nation-building under pressure. [7:07] While Donald Trump uses tariffs as a weapon, [7:10] Mark Carney is responding with infrastructure, partnerships, and long-term strategy. [7:16] The expansion of the Port of Vancouver is more than a construction project. [7:21] It is a declaration that Canada will not remain overly dependent on any single market, especially one that has become unreliable. [7:31] Ten billion dollars. [7:34] Tens of thousands of jobs. [7:36] A clear path to Asia and beyond. [7:39] This is how a country builds strength when faced with economic intimidation. [7:44] Not by folding, by expanding its options.
