'Canada Won't Be Dependent on U.S. Markets' Carney’s Minister Delivers Blunt Message to Trump

[0:00] we've been ready for every single scenario we've been working at this some industries have been [0:05] affected by the trade war for the past year and have shown great resiliency and we've been working [0:12] with business leaders unions employees themselves and so we have a mandate from the canadian public [0:22] to build canada to build canada strong to make sure that we can create jobs notwithstanding [0:28] what's going south of the border and that is exactly why we're here today we're announcing 500 [0:35] new jobs and we know we can grow this economy and we can diversify our markets around the world to [0:41] make sure that we reduce our dependency on the u.s market so in english now of course i can say that [0:50] so um of course we've been working on the revision of the usmca for some time prime minister [1:00] has been uh engaging with president trump and minister leblanc has been also engaging with [1:05] the representative jameson greer and of course our ambassador in washington and janice charrette [1:14] who's our negotiator in chief has been actively engaging with the u.s administration on this [1:21] we know that there are millions of jobs a link to this important trade deal in the u.s and so our goal [1:29] is obviously to be able to engage with community leaders business leaders and also politicians [1:38] south of the border as we want to make sure that we're able to create allies because we know that [1:44] there are many within the american society that believe in having a stable and reliable trade [1:50] relationship with canada my job in the context of this negotiation is really to be in charge of the [1:57] the consequences of the trade war against our workers particularly those affected by the tariffs [2:03] maybe in the steel sector in the aluminum sector or the auto and uh product of uh well basically [2:10] forestry sector softwood lumber sector um and uh we've been at it for more than a year and we've been [2:18] able to protect thousands of jobs and we've been also able to create jobs notwithstanding what's going [2:23] on and so it it shows the strength of our workers the strength also of our business leaders but also [2:29] the resiliency of our economy and we'll continue to fight this trade war um now um i'll be going to the [2:37] u.s as some of my colleagues as well and i'll be able to say where i go when i go there meanwhile the [2:44] goal is to make sure that uh we all engage with different business leaders um politicians on both sides of [2:51] the aisle on in in well they don't say both sides of the aisle but basically republicans or our democrats [2:58] uh and also with many community leaders um maybe at the federal level or at the state level [3:03] merci um après votre voyage we'll be waiting for any uh official uh conversation [4:16] coming out from the white house but i think fundamentally i think what canadians need to know [4:20] is that we've been ready for every
