Speaker

I'm going to pick up again for Roy Rogers. We really did lose a very special man last week. Roy passed away just days after his 90th birthday. He was a kind, gentle man who cared deeply about people in this community, and he cared about good government. Roy was a visionary. He was a true renaissance man. I had the good fortune to meet Roy shortly after I moved into Weston in 1991. And he had been a central figure in the design of Weston. And he had a passion for nature and parks, and it's visible in Weston's open spaces and many, many parks. He also was instrumental in establishing the Parks Foundation of Broward, where he was chair emeritus, and it was really one of his lasting legacies. He was a civic leader and an environmental champion. And I remember his passion for good government. He was a member of the Florida Ethics Commission on Ethics and served as its chairman. He was the founding chairman in 2000, the first year I ran for office, so I got to kind of know him well through that as well. One of the things that I remember most about him, I called him when the bill had passed and we were putting this Children's Services Council on the ballot 25 years ago. And I went to Roy, I called him, and I said, you know, I'd love you to be involved in this campaign. You know so many people. You can help us so much, and I know you care about kids. And he jumped at the chance. He had a breakfast down at the Sour Club, and most of those people that he invited to the breakfast became part of the steering committee to help with the passage of the Children's Services Council, which, as many of you know, has now brought $2.5 billion worth of services to children in this community. So I see that as a big legacy of his, too. Butterfly World was mentioned as well. He was also hopeful, cheerful. He loved to compliment people, which is unusual, I think, when they had done something good for our community. In addition to all he did for Broward, he had just a tremendous love for his family. They came first. His wife preceded him in death, Mandy. But he has a large and loving family. He's survived by his four children, Roy Jr., Brett, Karen, and John, and their spouses, and 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Our thoughts and prayers go out to this very special man. May his memory be a blessing. Thank you.
